There are those musical careers that follow predictable paths – and then there's Ivan Julian's. The child of a Navy officer, he found himself in far flung corners, including Guantanamo Bay. After spending his early teenage years as the front man of a Led Zeppelin cover band, he found himself in London, as a touring guitarist for The Foundations, eventually leaving the group behind to take up residence in Macedonia. It was his time in New York that ultimately put him on the map, however, as a founding member of Richard Hell and the Voidoids. Subsequent years found him collaborating with a broad range of musicians from Afrika Bambaataa to Matthew Sweet. These days, Julian lives in New York, running Brooklyn's SuperGiraffeSound recording studio. He's also gone on to release solo albums, including his newest, Swing Your Lanterns. Hosted on Acast. Ivan Julian has been one of music's most celebrated players and most in-demand collaborators for more than four decades. Indeed, Ivan Julian has spent his life soaking up a wealth of experiences, musical and otherwise. The son of a Navy officer, he grew up in such exotic locales as Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, nurturing a sensitive, creative streak that quickly manifested itself musically. At the age of 13, while living in Washington, D.C., he became the singer in a Led Zeppelin cover band; the following year, he began playing guitar. Having already studied bassoon and saxophone, Julian spent his high school years studying music theory as a part-time student in a college program. At 19, his wanderlust led him to London, where he joined U.K. R&B hitmakers The Foundations, (Build Me Up Buttercup) with whom he toured throughout Great Britain and Europe. It was during one of these tours that he decided to stay on in Macedonia to absorb and study the musical scales and rhythms that would have a major influence on his playing. Then Julian returned to the U.S. and settled in New York, just in time to become part of the emerging punk rock movement. A founding member of the seminal Richard Hell and the Voidoids, he was now playing alongside trend-setting punk poet Hell, fabled guitarist Robert Quine and drummer Marc Bell (a.k.a. Marky Ramone). Julian's instrumental and songwriting contributions to the band's classic album Blank Generation established him as one of the scene's most acclaimed and influential axemen. After the Voidoids disbanded, Julian stepped out to form the Outsets as a vehicle for his own vocal and songwriting efforts. Combining rock, funk and African rhythms, the Outsets became a beloved fixture on New York's burgeoning club scene, winning considerable critical acclaim for such releases as the debut single “I'm Searchin' for You”/”Fever,” a self-titled EP produced by Garland Jeffreys and the posthumously released The Punk/Funk Voodoo Collection. Teaming up with Bush Tetras singer Cynthia Sley Julian's next band, the Lovelies, won substantial attention with the release of the Mad Orphan LP. Also, during this time he regrouped with former bandmate Richard Hell to do an extensive tour of Japan. By this point, Julian's abilities as a collaborator had become sought after by a wide array of acts. He plays on “The Call Up” and “Ivan Meets GI Joe” with The Clash (on their Sandinista album), collaborated with Afrika Bambaataa and Bernie Worrell of Parliament/Funkadelic. He also joined England's Shriekback for two tours of North America and Europe. Julian spent much of the 1990s touring and recording with Matthew Sweet. In recent years, Ivan has concentrated mainly on studio work, producing and/or recording artist such as Sean Lennon and producing three albums by The Fleshtones. He's also developed his recording studio, SuperGiraffeSound into one of New York's hottest new recording facilities, working with numerous local, national and international bands. His solo LP, The Naked Flame was named one of the best records of the year by several trade magazines in Europe and the states including Trouser Press. Soon after came The Fauntleroys EP, Below the Pink Pony, a collaboration with Alejandro Escovedo, Nick Tremulis and Linda Pittman. His newest album ‘Swing Your Lanterns' is available on PRAVDA Records. The songs encompass his experiences of the past five years and more; Some of which, we have all lived through. Every time you think the controllers of the “music” industry have debased and toxified “entertainment” as far as is possible, the sick, diseased demons sitting atop these industries find new ways to take things even lower. Guesting this episode is Rhys Dawney, proprietor of the Schism podcast. Fortunately, Rhys can bear to wade through the so-called “hip-hop” culture of the 2000s to identify and comment on the insane satanic agendas being aimed at Gen Z. Along the way we discuss such subjects as: What the hell's happening with Kanye West? Just WHY has Drake been the biggest thing in “hip-hop” for the past 15 years? “Hip-hop”s Gay mafia; the pushing of Transgenderism, Transhumanism and A.I. through “music”; Travis Scott's demonic performance at Astroworld; Mind-controlled artists and their dissociative “alters”; why nobody cares about the Tim Westwood or Afrika Bambaataa allegations. Ultimately though, we end on a high note, observing that many from “Gen Z” are seeing through the bullshit that's been foisted on them. When the mind-control no longer works, neither do the agendas. Rob GEE on the Virtual Sessions presented by The DJ Sessions 1/12/23 About Rob GEE - Rob GEE is famous all across The Universe as "the hardest DJ to ever play the Limelight in NYC." In the club's early 90's heyday, the versatile GEE kept delirious audiences going through spinning at Limelight's "Future Shock" dance/techno nights and performing with his live band as well as spinning at the club's "Rock And Roll Church" metal/ rock/ industrial nights. The crowds kept coming back to Limelight, just like they did in Australia, Japan, Italy, Spain, Scotland, Austria, Hungary and Belgium to name a few. GEE is a recurring headliner at Sensation,Thunderdome, Mysteryland, and Love Parade, where GEE played before one million people. His diverse appeal keeps him performing weekly at all types of musical events and concerts. GEE has shared the stage with everyone from Hatebreed and Biohazard to Crystal Method, Busta Rhymes, Kurtis Blow, and Afrika Bambaataa. His GEEness has also has spun at many Slipknot and Korn after parties with his good friend, DJ Starscream a.k.a. #0 of Slipknot. GEE's history of DJing and live performances shows his dedication of bringing the fusion of organic and electronic music to a wide variety of listeners. GEE's love of hip-hop, hardcore, techno, metal and every other genre for that matter set him apart from the rest. While other DJs make tracks and spin records, GEE is an Artist who writes original songs. His indecisiveness as to whether or not he wanted to breakdance and spin hip-hop or jump in the mosh pit and play in a metal band was one of the reasons he began to cultivate his own style of both. Rob GEE is the only artist of his kind to collaborate and create with members of respected rock, metal, hardcore and hip-hop acts such as Slipknot, Hatebreed, Biohazard, Wu-Tang Clan, Cypress Hill, and System Of A Down (just to name a few) creating a unification of Rock, Electronic, & Metal as well any other style GEE chooses to use. The GEEsult is Rob GEE gabber music. Rob GEE says, "There are no boundaries in music" . GEE is writing history launching gabber into the scene of the galaxy...... "The Gabber Guru," as GEE is known for his constant motivation of #PositivianVibes gained worldwide fame after the release of "Ecstasy You Got What I Need". The song went Gold and was the #1 video on The Box for 13 straight weeks. At the same time, "Ecstasy" rose to #9 on the pop charts and earned him Best Artist, Best Producer and Best Song of the year at The Thunder Awards in Holland. The GEE Man has recently enjoyed more worldwide success along with band mates Neophyte and Tieum with their collective efforts "Coming At You Strong", "Anxiety", & "Rage With Pride" under the name "Riot Squad". Rob GEE is still pushing solo success globally with his most recent hit "Right Now". GEE, always with his open mind, has enjoyed recent Hardstyle & Rawstyle bangers teaming up with heavy hitters like The Prophet and Adaro. While in the same breath has been rocking the mainstream airwaves collaborating with hardcore giants Noize Suppressor, Mad Dog, & Furyan. Look out later this year, nu metal will meet hardcore in the studio ring when Rob GEE teams up with none other than Shavo Odadjian of System Of A Down. Rob GEE won't be stopped!!!!!! The sound is 100% Rob GEE, which means eclectic, unexpected and completely unique. City scenes is our weekly Thursday feature in which we dive head first into the music scene of a particular city. We're going through the alphabet from A-Z. Last week for C we looked at Chicago and this we're driving 4 and half hours down the road into Michigan and we're looking at Detroit. Detroit is a city of 4,5 million people in the midwestern state of Michigan, USA. It's a city with a huge industrial history and a massive musical legacy. Known as the motor city due to the High concentration of car factories in the city that attracted thousands of people searching for work in the great migration that we heard about last week. Detroit is famous for the sounds of Mo-town, Rock Music, Hip Hop and Techno and today we're going to be taking a glimpse at all of these sounds. Before any of these genres or scenes existed, Detroit had a huge history of Gospel, Jazz and Blues music, and no doubt that all those sounds informed what came later in the city, but the sound that immortalized Detroit as a legendary musical city is the sound of Motown. Motown records is one of the most significant record labels in the history of American R&B and soul music. It takes it's name from Detroit's nickname of the motor city and it was founded in the 1950s by a motor factory worker called Berry Gordy. Motown went on to become home to some of the biggest names in Soul Music such as Marvin Gaye, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder, Diana Ross & The Supremes, The Four Tops, Martha Reeves & the Vandellas and The Jackson 5. Detroit also has a huge legacy of rock music and one band from Detroit that are often cited as being one of the most important rock bands in history, named after their home town, is the Motor City 5 or MC5, a band who spent years playing relentlessly in every venue around Detroit before they ended up getting a record Deal. They were known for their pro-civil rights and anti-establishment politics and heavy rock sound that went on to inspire bands like the Sex Pistols and the clash to create what went on to become punk music. The genre that Detroit is perhaps most exclusively credited with being the birthplace of is Detroit Techno. By the mid 1980s, the car industry that had seen Detroit thriving in the 1960s had already been in Decline for some time. The deindustrialization of the city, with factories closing down led to a phenomenon called “white flight” with the city's white middle class leaving Detroit and taking a lot of the city's wealth with them. The Population dropped to around 800,000 people and the city was full of abandoned houses, factories and warehouses. This harsh environment however served as the inspiration for what became one of the biggest subcultures in history. Drawing on the bleak visions of a deprived city that surrounded them and inspired by a particularly legendary radio DJ called the electrifying mojo who would play early European electronic music by the likes of Kraftwerk and Giorgio Moroder as well as the funk sound of bands like parliament and the B52s, and the newly emerging electro hip hop sounds of the likes of Afrika Bambaataa, young producers like juan Atkins, Kevin Saunderson, Eddie Folkes and Derrick May transformed the mechanic, industrial and machine driven history of their city into music that was made with machines like drum machines and synthesizers based on repetition and groove. This was the sound of Techno. An early precursor to the sound of techno that bridged the gap between the sounds that the electrifying mojo was playing on the radio and what became techno was the music of a duo called Cybotron. Detroit Techno went on to be developed and refined to it's rhythmic essence by legendary producers like Jeff Mills and Underground Resistance. In this City Scene we heard Motown, rock and techno but Detroit is the birthplace of so many other famous artists and sounds including Madonna, Eminem, Sufjan Stevens, Aaliyah, J Dilla. Carl Craig, Drexciya, Moodyman and many more.
Many mokuhanga printmakers today touch on different mediums when they create their work. It could be sculpture, bookbinding, or installation. There is no limit as to what can be accomplished with mokuhanga. On this episode of The Unfinished Print I speak with mokuhanga printmaker and artist Katie Baldwin. Based in Alabama where she is an Assistant Professor at the University of Alabama, Huntsville. Katie has travelled the world, from Poland to Taiwan. Casson (1898–1992) was invited to join in 1926, Edwin Holdgate (1892–1977) became a member in 1930, and LeMoine FitzGerald (1890–1956) joined in 1932. While Tom Thomspon (1877–1917), and Emily Carr (1871–1945) were not "official" members it is generally accepted that they were a part of the group without being "officially" a part of the group because of the group relationship with the artists. More info can be found, here. Collaborative Mokuhanga Groups of the past - usually associated with the sōsaku hanga movement of the early 20th century, these collaborative mokuhanga groups shared and disseminated their work amongst themselves, teaching techniques and methods, strengthening the creative print movement in Japan. Some famous print groups were The First Thursday Society as founded by Onchi Kōshirō (1891-1955), and the Yoyogi Group founded by Un'ichi Hiratsuka (1895-1997). Printmaking during this time was predominantly male, so we see Japan and that time period through the eyes of men. There were female printmakers, such as Keiko Minami (1911-2007), although she lived abroad and not in Japan. I was joined for this episode by That Petrol Emotion guitarist Raymond Gorman to take us back to Derry in the mid 80's through the lens of his DJ stints at the Left Bank Disco. We talk about the local scene, living in Derry in the mid 80's, being a DJ with a manifesto, Almost blowing yourself up on a lighting rig, starting a band, moving to that London, and in a break from normal MSG norms, stuff about the guests actual band. Ewan does tell a few boring anecdotes, and here's a bonus drinking game for you, every time he mentions that he is from Wolverhampton - SHOT. Few DJs have had as big an impact on music and culture as Zach Sciacca, nor do they work as hard. Whether in the studio, behind the decks, or behind the scenes, he is always pushing the boundaries and honing his craft. Better known as DJ Z-Trip, Zach is a genre-bending Los Angeles musician, the recipient of the 2009 America's Best DJ Award, and a pioneer of the mashup movement. As a producer, he has worked with incredible artists across genres, including the likes of LL Cool J, Public Enemy, Kasabian, and Dan the Automator. His love for all styles of music and how they can work together is groundbreaking and inspiring, and his innate funkiness and technical ability have led him to compose scores for video games like EA Skate, create mashups for Activision's DJ Hero, and score music for films such as Infamy, La Bare, and Bob Marley: Legend Remixed. In today's conversation, Zach shares some major pearls of wisdom about the importance of pushing the boundaries whenever you have the chance and investing your energy in constant evolution, not what sells or attracts the most followers. We also touch on how the pandemic helped him reconnect with his ‘why' and why he believes that true success is about the aggregate, not the benchmarks. Zach has a work ethic to be admired, as well as a deep love for music, an approachable demeanor, and a relentlessly positive attitude, and listeners will benefit greatly from hearing his story today. We hope you'll join us! Key Points From This Episode: How the contrasting worlds of New York and Arizona influenced Zach's taste in music. The story of how his collection of 12-inch singles led Zach to become a DJ. Some favorite examples of tracks that blend genres, like Afrika Bambaataa's ‘Planet Rock'. The boundary-pushing sampling and discovery that drew Zach to hip hop. Insight into Zach's process of producing his own music, which started with pause tapes. The ‘Rockstar' track on Return of the DJ that caught the attention of Zach's peers. Why he believes that the mashup requires a certain level of open-mindedness. The value of working with those on the same trajectory as you, rather than more established artists, and building the right team. Key lessons from Zach's career: be risky, push boundaries, and don't always play it safe! The work ethic and commitment to improvement that Zach demonstrates every day. What the pandemic taught him about reconnecting with his ‘why'. How live streaming and virtual raves influenced his practice and his mindset. Zach shares his belief in staying true to himself and allowing the universe to provide. Why he believes that success is about the aggregate, not about hitting benchmarks. His advice for DJs: play every gig like it's your first and your last! He cautions musicians against getting caught up in the numbers, likes, and followers.
Martin Bisi has owned BC Studios since 1980 when he started it with Brian Eno and Bill Laswell and has been witness to it's growth from gritty avante-garde hub of the No-Wave scene in which he was foundational, working with Lydia Lunch, Swans, Foetus and Sonic Youth into a largely gentrified but still arts-centric village. He's a pioneer for his work with early hip hop artists like Afrika Bambaataa and his solo work is as ambitious and free as his no-rules production style with a large catalog under his wings. His newest work is with the band NEONNOONE and is on par with his finest releases. An inspiring and unquenchable talent.

In this episode, Part 2 of “Crate Boys,” we hear the conclusion of the story of Afrika Bambaataa, a founding father of hip-hop who stands accused by several men of molesting them when they were teenagers. Bambaataa remains a shadowy figure while more allegations surface, Ron “Bee-Stinger” Savage receives more threats, Dave is threatened by a top Zulu Nation official, and a Zulu Nation soldier is mysteriously murdered shortly after speaking out about the scandal. Despite the mounting evidence, the case is nearly closed forever, until a last-minute court filing by a new victim gives hope to those seeking justice.
In this episode, Part 1 of “Crate Boys,” Dave and Casey tell the story of how one of hip-hop's founding fathers, Afrika Bambaataa, built a rap empire that changed the world and gave him god-like status, which alleged victims say he wielded to groom young boys for sex – all with the protection of his powerful legion of followers in the Zulu Nation. The story of Bambaataa, drawn from Dave's groundbreaking work on the case for VICE, is littered with corruption, sexual abuse, exploitation, violence and even murder. This episode contains graphic and vulgar language that may be disturbing.
