Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., the Secretary of Health and Human Services, has been undermining public trust in vaccines and overseeing crippling cuts to research across American science. And yet his “make America healthy again” highlights themes more familiar in liberal circles: toxins in the environment, biodiversity, healthy eating. Kennedy has put junk food at the center of the political conversation, speaking about ultra-processed foods and their established links to chronic disease—despite President Donald Trump's well-known reverence for fast food of all kinds. Marion Nestle, a leading nutrition researcher and the author of “Food Politics,” has written in depth on how money and politics affect our diet and our health, and about the ways that American science research has been hampered by limited funding. She tells the physician and contributing writer Dhruv Khullar, who's been reporting on the American diet, that “it would be wonderful if R.F.K., Jr., could make the food supply healthier. I just think that in order to do that, he's going to have to take on the food industry, and I don't think Trump has a history of taking on corporations of any kind. . . . I'll believe it when I see it.” Kraftwerk—the pioneering electronic music group that débuted more than half a century ago —has been touring the U.S., with stops planned in Europe this year. The staff writer Kelefa Sanneh calls them one of the most influential bands of all time, playing a formative role in hip-hop, techno, EDM, and much of popular music as we know it. Sanneh picks tracks from Kraftswerk's repertoire and demonstrates how those sounds trickle out through music history, from Afrika Bambaataa to Coldplay.

In this episode Tim and Jeremy continue the story of Frankie Knuckles first year at the controls of the seminal Chicago nightclub, the Warehouse. We hear an investigation of Frankie's early musical aesthetic, how it would lend itself to the development of the House sound some years later, and whether stability or dynamism are better for a pumping dance floor. Elsewhere in the episode we hear about how Robert Williams came to know Frankie and Larry Levan, the experiences the two young club kids had at the Continental Baths, the understated role of social workers in the story of dance history, and what the PMC have to do with Afrika Bambaataa. Plus - stolen donuts, LSD in the fish tank, and Jeremy's dreams of lamé… Produced by Matt Huxley. Due to licensing issues, we can only play short clips of the music discussed.
Investigative jounalist Leila Wills rejoins the show to talk about the very topical subject of the arrest of Sean Combs, aka P Diddy/ Puff Daddy. Just as with the Jimmy Savile revelations, this is far from an isolated incident, and is emblematic of the overall degradation and debauchery present throughout the "hip-hop" scene. And this, in turn, is no different to the state of moral repugnancy throughout every aspect of Organised Society.Along the way we also connect some dots involving Afrika Bambaataa, the "founding father of hip-hop culture," prominent UK hip-hop DJ Tim Westwood, singer R Kelly and rapper Drake, all of whom have been embroiled in their own personal accusations. *My new Substack page featuring advance content from my next book, ‘Musical Truth Sound Bites', is here. Send us a Text Message.Do you want to know why courage and self-examination are crucial in the fight for justice? In this episode of the Darrell McClain Show, we transport you back to a stirring 2006 sermon by Dr. Cornel West at Howard University. Dr. West passionately discusses his unwavering commitment to faith and the transformative power of love and justice. He celebrates the integrity and social contributions of figures like Reverend Dr. Bernard L. Richardson and Tavis Smiley, urging us all to embody Christian values by standing against injustice and unfairness. Dr. West's call for courage and self-reflection challenges us to better understand ourselves to truly contribute to the broader narrative of freedom and dignity.Reflect on profound legacies with us as we touch on the intersections of death, legacy, and social movements. From the tragic loss of Tupac Shakur to the impactful yet politically overshadowed funeral of Coretta Scott King, we explore historical resilience and the creative expressions of Black communities through spirituals and hip-hop. Highlighting the fight against systemic oppression and celebrating voices like Afrika Bambaataa, KRS-One, and Lauryn Hill, this episode critiques racial biases within the criminal justice system and underscores the importance of maintaining dignity and spiritual integrity amidst adversity. Can the teachings of Jesus guide us in modern social justice work? Dr. West's sermon at Howard University suggests they can. By examining the essence of service, love, and sacrifice, we discuss how even those with troubled pasts can transform through love and redemption. With a focus on political courage and accountability, we recount heartfelt dialogues on the challenges of confronting right-wing televangelists and the necessity of maintaining integrity. Drawing from the legacy of leaders like Nelson Mandela and Dr Martin Luther King Jr., Dr. West's message at Howard is a powerful call to arms, urging us to engage with the world's struggles through transformative love, hope, and justice. Tune in for an episode that not only honors the legacy of historical figures but also challenges you to leave a positive mark on the world. Support the Show.

In Episode #179 of The XS Noize Podcast, host Mark Millar speaks to legendary DJ/Producer Arthur Baker, credited as a leader, pioneer, and trailblazer in electronic music. Masterminding breakthrough experimentation with tape edits and sampling. He left Boston for New York at the start of the 1980s. Initially DJing and producing disco and soul, he was drafted in by Tommy Boy Records to produce for hip-hop crew Afrika Bambaataa and the Soul Sonic Force. Planet Rock, the seminal single — with vocals by MC G.L.O.B.E. — that came out of those sessions, unwittingly kick-starting a revolution: electro. Baker would go on to become an award-winning DJ and music and film producer, producing and mixing such artists as Bob Dylan, Hall & Oates, Al Green, Bruce Springsteen, The Rolling Stones, Tina Turner, Diana Ross, Cyndi Lauper, New Order, The Pet Shop Boys, Fleetwood Mac and Hurts. Fast-forward 40 years of hip-hop and electro street culture and Arthur is now a bona fide legendary music figure. Now he has teamed up with UK house rhythm master Steve Mac for the Sex Machine EP. In this interview, Arthur discusses the early days of hip hop, The Sun City album, the Sex Machine EP, remixing huge hit records and lots more. Previous XS Noize Podcast guests have been Crowded House, Elbow, Cast, Kula Shaker, Shed Seven, Future Islands, Peter Frampton, John Lydon, Nick Heyward, Steven Wilson, Matt Goss, Billy Nomates, Tom Meighan, Toyah Wilcox, Midge Ure, Travis, New Order, The Killers, Tito Jackson, Simple Minds, Divine Comedy, Shaun Ryder, Gary Numan, Sleaford Mods, The Brand New Heavies, Villagers. Editor's note: Today's special episode comes to us from our friends at The Conduit, who operate under the Crewest Studio network of podcasts alongside NOT REAL ART. In the ‘90s, rock was rock, hip-hop was hip-hop, and never the twain did meet. Then, at the turn of the century, a 73-minute, genre-bending bomb exploded onto the music scene, shattering notions about the limits of creativity and collaboration. Uneasy Listening, Vol. I, a joint record from like-minded DJs P and Z-Trip, broke genre conventions by mixing rock ‘n' roll mainstays like Rush and Pat Benatar with dance and hip-hop cuts from Madonna, Redman, and The Pharcyde.Welcome to The Conduit, a podcast featuring candid conversations with professional musicians who give listeners the unvarnished truth about being an artist in the music industry. In today's episode, L.A.-based DJ, producer, and musician Dan Ubick (aka Constantine “Connie” Price) sits down with Zach Sciacca (better known as DJ Z-Trip) to discuss the musician's pioneering work as a key player in the mash-ups movement.“It wasn't like I set out to become a DJ,” says Z-Trip, whose Uneasy Listening arrived on the scene in 2001, just as samples, remixes, and mashups were gaining credibility as a valid form of self-expression. “It was very much about me having this music and wanting to share it,” he continues. “Once I realized that I could put it together and I could expose people to the things that I liked, the DJ thing came into play.” Widely known as both the godfather of mashups and “America's Best DJ,” an award he received in 2009 from the DJ Times, Z-Trip is also renowned for his technical abilities and production skills. Over the years, he's collaborated with innovative artists like Nas, Beck, Public Enemy, and DJ Shadow, remixing songs from artists as varied as Bob Marley and the Butthole Surfers. In his interview, Z-Trip shares the brightest pearls of wisdom he's pocketed along the way: “One thing I learned through the arc of my whole career is take chances,” he says. “Be risky, try to push boundaries. Don't always play it safe. There's a time to play it safe, there's a time to lock in.”Z-Trip also touches on his favorite genre-bending tracks (see Afrika Bambaataa's “Planet Rock”), why creative consistency trumps big milestones, and how to find like-minded artists traveling a similar career path. His advice to aspiring DJs? “Every gig, go into it like it's your first [and last],” he says, adding, “put your heart and fucking soul into it because you never know who's watching.” Key Points From This Episode:How the contrasting worlds of New York and Arizona influenced Zach's taste in music. The diverse collection of 12-inch singles that led him to become a DJ.Why ‘Rock the Bells' by LL Cool J epitomizes Zach's genre-bending style.Zach's belief in pushing boundaries rather than chasing money or trends. The unique sense of discovery that attracted him to hip-hop.Talent over appearance: the freaks, geeks, and outcasts that were also drawn to the genre.Insight into Zach's process of producing his own music; which started with pause tapes. The story of the ‘Rockstar' track on Return of the DJ that caught the attention of...
Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
As the accusations against Puff Daddy/ P Diddy continue to ramp up, implicatting many others from the rap and hip-hop world, I rejoin Lou Collins to provide some background on the origins of hip-hop culture, and how it has been systematically degraded and toxified. Along the way we also discuss Tim Westwood, Afrika Bambaataa, R Kelly, Aaliyah, Jay-Z, Damon Dash, Biggie, Tupac and many others. Please listen even if you're not a fan of hip-hop, as the revelations regarding Diddy are representative of the satanic and paedophilic state of entertainment and popular culture generally. It seems as if everything is starting to unravel.*If you have found value in this information, please consider supporting my work with a donation if you are able, in order that it can continue. You can do so at Buy Me A Coffee here:https://www.buymeacoffee.com/markdevlinOr, to make a direct donation via www.paypal.com, find me under the e-mail address markdevlinuk@gmail.com there. To order signed copies of any of the books, or to obtain a copy of the MD Archives. please e-mail:markdevlin2022@protonmail.comTo order Root Wellness natural health/ immune boosting products as featured in a previous Good Vibrations episode:https://www.therootbrands.com/markdevlin

The Bronx in the 1970s was a perfect storm of things going wrong in New York City: poor urban planning, white flight, budget cuts to municipal and social services, and discriminatory practices coverged into a pressure cooker -- and the outcome was fiery and devastating. But we can't talk about the Bronx burning without ending on the phoenix that emerged from the rubble: the birth of hip-hop.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
