Editor's note: Today's special episode comes to us from our friends at The Conduit, who operate under the Crewest Studio network of podcasts alongside NOT REAL ART. In the ‘90s, rock was rock, hip-hop was hip-hop, and never the twain did meet. Then, at the turn of the century, a 73-minute, genre-bending bomb exploded onto the music scene, shattering notions about the limits of creativity and collaboration. Uneasy Listening, Vol. I, a joint record from like-minded DJs P and Z-Trip, broke genre conventions by mixing rock ‘n' roll mainstays like Rush and Pat Benatar with dance and hip-hop cuts from Madonna, Redman, and The Pharcyde.Welcome to The Conduit, a podcast featuring candid conversations with professional musicians who give listeners the unvarnished truth about being an artist in the music industry. In today's episode, L.A.-based DJ, producer, and musician Dan Ubick (aka Constantine “Connie” Price) sits down with Zach Sciacca (better known as DJ Z-Trip) to discuss the musician's pioneering work as a key player in the mash-ups movement.“It wasn't like I set out to become a DJ,” says Z-Trip, whose Uneasy Listening arrived on the scene in 2001, just as samples, remixes, and mashups were gaining credibility as a valid form of self-expression. “It was very much about me having this music and wanting to share it,” he continues. “Once I realized that I could put it together and I could expose people to the things that I liked, the DJ thing came into play.” Widely known as both the godfather of mashups and “America's Best DJ,” an award he received in 2009 from the DJ Times, Z-Trip is also renowned for his technical abilities and production skills. Over the years, he's collaborated with innovative artists like Nas, Beck, Public Enemy, and DJ Shadow, remixing songs from artists as varied as Bob Marley and the Butthole Surfers. In his interview, Z-Trip shares the brightest pearls of wisdom he's pocketed along the way: “One thing I learned through the arc of my whole career is take chances,” he says. “Be risky, try to push boundaries. Don't always play it safe. There's a time to play it safe, there's a time to lock in.”Z-Trip also touches on his favorite genre-bending tracks (see Afrika Bambaataa's “Planet Rock”), why creative consistency trumps big milestones, and how to find like-minded artists traveling a similar career path. His advice to aspiring DJs? “Every gig, go into it like it's your first [and last],” he says, adding, “put your heart and fucking soul into it because you never know who's watching.” Key Points From This Episode:How the contrasting worlds of New York and Arizona influenced Zach's taste in music. The diverse collection of 12-inch singles that led him to become a DJ.Why ‘Rock the Bells' by LL Cool J epitomizes Zach's genre-bending style.Zach's belief in pushing boundaries rather than chasing money or trends. The unique sense of discovery that attracted him to hip-hop.Talent over appearance: the freaks, geeks, and outcasts that were also drawn to the genre.Insight into Zach's process of producing his own music; which started with pause tapes. The story of the ‘Rockstar' track on Return of the DJ that caught the attention of...

They say hindsight is 20/20 and for our guest today his future was deeply rooted in his love of music as a child. After attempting to pursue a more careful path in his career he decided that if others could DJ and make money doing it, so could he. That moment of listening to his intuition led him to a life of joy doing what he loves. My guest today is one of my amazing clients and friends David Krieger. He is an award-winning DJ and producer. His career began over 15 years ago working as a radio DJ in Philadelphia and MTV VJ in New York. After receiving a Broadcasting degree from Temple University, Krieger moved to Los Angeles, DJing scores of milestone celebrations and events annually, including holding residencies at The W, The Standard, The London, The Sunset Room in Hollywood, and a major career high - the HP Lounge of Coachella 2019. He is best known for being named “Best DJ in Los Angeles” of 2018, 2019, and 2020 by California Wedding Day Magazine. Krieger serves on the Board of Directors for the Wedding International Professionals Association (WIPA), and has won the WIPA “DJ of Excellence Award” twice. In 2021, Krieger expanded his business to be bicoastal and established a new home-base in Atlanta where he currently lives with his fiancée Mandy, his dog Butch, and cat Mr. Charles. In today's episode David talks about how following his intuition has led to creating amazing moments of success on stage and even the big move of his business and family across the country. David explains how his ADHD affects his business and how he approaches leaps in his career. He talks about the impact of instagram on his business and strategies that have contributed to his ongoing success doing what he loves - creating and playing music. Our biggest takeaway from this interview is that success is still inevitable if you listen to your intuition. If you have ever felt unsure if you are capable of big success and you're not the type to have a 10 year plan, then take a moment to get inspired.

Here are some tips for booking high-level events as a DJ:Build a strong brand: Develop a unique and memorable brand that reflects your style and personality as a DJ. This includes having a professional website, social media presence, and marketing materials such as business cards and press kits.Create a strong portfolio: Build a portfolio of your work, including mixtapes, live sets, and videos of your performances. This will give potential clients a clear idea of your skills and what you can bring to their event.Network and make connections: Attend industry events and parties, and connect with event planners, promoters, and other DJs. Build relationships with these professionals and stay in touch with them to be top of mind when they are looking for a DJ for their event.Offer unique services: Stand out from other DJs by offering unique services, such as live remixing, custom mashups, or specialty music genres. This will help you stand out from the competition and make you more attractive to high-level event planners.Be professional: Always be punctual, dress appropriately, and be respectful to everyone you work with. Treat every event as an opportunity to showcase your skills and professionalism, and you'll earn a reputation as a reliable and talented DJ.Market yourself to the right audience: Make sure to market yourself to the right audience for the types of events you want to book. This means targeting the right industries, geographic regions, and demographics.Be flexible and adaptable: Be open to working with event planners to customize your set to fit their event's needs. This means being willing to play different music genres, adjusting your volume and energy level to match the crowd, and working with other performers to create a cohesive and memorable event.Overall, the key to booking high-level events as a DJ is to create a strong brand, build a network of contacts, offer unique services, be professional, market yourself effectively, and be flexible and adaptable to different events.Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/we-create-the-vibes-podcast/exclusive-contentAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Trevor Nelson is a legendary broadcaster. He changed the world of radio and what was played, becoming a figurehead of R&B and black music. He has had a phenomenally successful career broadcasting for 35 years. The list of people he has interviewed is hard to rival - Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Beyonce, Janet Jackson, Lauryn Hill, Jay Z, Kanye, P Diddy, Muhammed Ali. It goes on. Trevor started on Kiss, when it was a pirate station, before joining Radio 1 in 1996 hosting the first ever national RNB show. At one point he had a show on three BBC networks (Radio 1, 1xtra and Radio 2), something only he has achieved. In the late 90s, Trevor presented The Lick on MTV and has won two MOBO awards for Best DJ. He has paved the way for others, all whilst being incredibly humble and unfazed by being a minority in the room. But who is the man behind the voice? What has changed him? Annie finds out. You can currently hear Trevor on BBC Radio 1xtra every Sunday at 11am and Radio 2, Monday to Thursday at 10:30pm. Warning: does reference suicidal thoughts. After some monumental "off pod" chaos and catching up on their weekly activities (dinner with Michael Musto, the Imperial Court, a soft-soft opening, etc.), Freddie & Jim are finally downstairs on the Red Eye NY stage, where they will be from now on! Our episode starts on site just as a Get Out Magazine photoshoot featuring GLAM nominees from last year concludes, but our intrepid hosts were able to grab a few folks from the shoot for some fun and fast conversations before everyone escaped: live singing sensation, "marinating" fashionista and multiple GLAM nominee Jasmine Rice LaBeija; avant-garde door diva & Queen of the Universe star Novaczar, also multi-GLAM nominated; last year's Best DJ winner, Madd Monday's drag DJ Boyish Charm; and Da Main Bitch who started it all, the GLAM Awards' creator and producer Cherry Jubilee! In the News: Drag Race Season 15 details are finally here, including NYC & NJ's cast members; Marti Cummings & Brita Filter attend the Presidential signing of the Respect for Marriage Act at the White House, but (predictably) face conservative backlash; and the actor former known as NYC drag queen Crystal Demure stars in Broadway's newly premiered Some Like It Hot musical. And what's on our new TOP TEN list of this week's nightlife events! Email the podcast at thotlight@redeyeny.com!

HISTORY Born in Canada, and growing up in such varied places as Tanzania (East Africa) and Vanuatu (The South Pacific), Cozmic Cat aka Paula Burrows absorbed International rhythms from a traveling family and became obsessed with music at an early age. She later moved to Philadelphia, USA and became immersed in the vibrant music scene there for over 9 years. Inspired by the artists and DJs she met in Philly and NYC, she began managing street teams and promoting for Sony Music, Giant Step Records, Om records and many more, all the while throwing her own events with DJs, percussionists and live musicians. Coz learned about House music, Jazz, Disco, Soul, Rare Groove and Funk from some of Philly's deepest crate diggers. This knowledge, passion and skill led to several award wins from various Philadelphia Press for Best DJ, Best DJ (Mixer), and Best DJ (Audience Choice and Editors Choice). Armed with a vintage Korg Triton Synth and a desire to release vinyl, she connected with two local Philly producers Lorne Peart and Jon Gil to release a series of vinyl e.p's under the name From Philly With Love which earned them a spot on Urb Magazine's Next 100. Her nightlife community involvement, production and event promotion efforts compounded and eventually led to a full time career in the music industry as a full time DJ, music producer and record label boss.
