Home care is amazing! Older folks overwhelmingly fear loss of independence and institutionalization more than death.  Home Care can save the day for folks when they lose their ability to perform Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) independently.  Caregivers help with hygiene, nutrition, safety, cleanliness and so much more, all while allowing a person to stay in their home and the surroundings that they cherish.Adult Day Care is also Amazing: Another fear that outweighs death is the loss of family or friends. Day programs combat social isolation, provide nutrition, activity, movement, friends and a reason to get out of bed in the morning. When my mom started with adult day services, she told me "...and now I'm even going to camp."The first proposed titles of this podcast were "We are not enemies!" and "We are not competition."Powerhouse guest Liz Barnes, Vice President of Risk Management and Adult Day Services for Easterseals in the national capital area (Washington DC, Virginia, and Maryland) is a great proponent and advocate for all home and community based services. She has a wealth of knowledge and also a great energy and passion, and I especially loved two things about my interview with her:She answers everything from the perspective of the participantFor Liz, "taking care of people" isn't enough, she wants them to live their best lives.Coincidentally Liz is the Chair of the upcoming NADSA conference and comes bearing a Discount Code (Ankota20)It's not a coincidence that the timing of Liz's episode is just about one month before the National Adult Day Services Association (NADSA) conference. It will be held from September 18th - 20th in the supercool Buckhead neighborhood of Atlanta (Buckhead Marriott). When we recorded the episode, she mentioned that it was one day before the "early bird discount" was coming to an end. I had to share that sadly the episode wouldn't be reaching you until today, but Liz took care of you and arranged for the discount code Ankota20 that will get you 20% off conference admission.  You can register for the conference here. Please enjoy what Liz has to share.Liz also graciously shared that she loves helping Home and Community Based Service (HCBS) entrepreneurs and that you can reach her via email at ebarnes@eseal.org.Home Care Heroes and Day Service Stars is produced and sponsored by Ankota - If you provide services that enable older or disabled people to continue living at home , Ankota can provide you the software to successfully run your agency. All Home Care Matters and our host, Lance A. Slatton spent a day at the Frenchtown Adult Center in Monroe, Michigan.   Many family caregivers are unfamiliar with what an adult day center is and what resources are available to them through adult day centers. Many people hear the word ‘dementia' and wonder what it is, described as a set of symptoms that may include memory loss and difficulties with thinking, problem-solving, or language.   Often these issues are small to start with and can become severe enough to affect daily life. Dementia is often time associated with Alzheimer's disease, while this is true, Alzheimer's is the cause of dementia, just like a series of strokes can lead to dementia.    Discover how the Frenchtown Adult Day Service program supports the individual and his/her Caregiver.   Connect with the Frenchtown Adult Day Center in Monroe, Michigan: https://www.frenchtownsenior.com/adult-day-services-program.html   Connect with Lance A. Heather Brooks, CAPS, SRES, is an aging specialist and community educator focused on helping older adults age in the right place. She shares her ‘secret sauce' for aging well in community—including universal design, age friendly home modifications, respite care, age-tech, and access to crucial social determinants of health. About Heather Heather Brooks is the National Aging in Place Council (NAIPC) Housing Committee Chair and Founding Chapter Chair for NAIPC in SE Florida. She has spent nearly three decades in real estate, specializing in helping seniors "Modify or Move." She is Certified Aging In-Place Specialist (CAPS)Certified Aging-In-Place Specialist (CAPS) and Seniors Real Estate Specialist (SRES) and SFR® certifications National Association of Home Builders National Association of Home Builders. Heather is the founder of "How 2 Age Your Way" and "Step Up Housing", connecting communities and promoting affordable housing for seniors. She is actively involved in NAIPC and SE Florida's founding chapter chair. She has been featured on top podcasts like the NKBA Webinar Series, spoken at the International Builders Show and advocate for aging in place through education and neighborhood initiatives. Key Takeaways The nation's housing infrastructure is insufficient to support the aging population. The average home is 44 years old and less than 5% of our nation's housing units can accommodate individuals with mobility issues. Sixty percent of falls happen at home, and one in four adults report taking a fall. Key aging in place features include step free entries and access to a bedroom and full bathroom on the 1st floor. Important home modifications include installing grab bars, non-slip flooring surfaces, improved lighting, multi-level countertops and replacing doorknobs with lever handles. Universal design goes beyond ADA requirements to design environments that are accessible and usable by all ages and all abilities, whether you have a wheelchair or a stroller. Age-friendly communities are huge drivers of aging well. They encompass more than the home you live in. Social determinants of health like access to transportation, medical care and connections to family and friends are crucial for healthy longevity. There are 4,130 licensed adult day centers in the US servicing 237,000 people daily. The industry is experiencing huge growth as families recognize the importance of taking breaks from caregiving. Adult daycare combats caregiver burnout and is significantly less expensive than homecare.

Today's episode of Home Care Heroes is exciting because we've expanded to include day services (like Adult Day Care and Day Habilitation for individuals with Intellectual or developmental disabilities).  From now on we'll be calling the podcast Home Care Heroes and Day Service Stars.Christina Vlosich is the perfect guest and today's topic explores why home care and day services go together so well.  As a short preview, here are some of the reasons why so many home care agencies are adding day services:Client benefits: Day Service Participants benefit from the social aspect of having friends who they can meet with at day care plus the activities and nutrition. Benefits to your agency: In a Day Services setting, you generally only need one team member for each 4 to 5 participants so it's easier to staff and even though the reimbursement is lower, the staff cost is much lower too.Secret Benefits to your agency: Two of the biggest problems in home care are 1) Being able to visit with and staff new prospective clients fast enough, and 2) training caregivers who immediately drop out when they get placed in a senior's home. With a day center, you can give your home care trainees hands on experience to better prepare them for their jobs. Plus, you can slightly overstaff your day center such that when a new prospect calls on the phone you can send a team member to meet them right away.We also talk a lot about the critical topics of branding and differentiating your day center.Christina Vlosich is the principal of Adult Day Service Consulting (adsconsult.biz). The founder and CEO of Chelsea Place Senior Care and senior living podcaster on why he is bullish on adult day care as a cost-effective alternative to assisted living or home care, and the value of a good laugh. About Kris An entrepreneur with over 10 years of experience in senior care, Kris Chana's personal mission is to give older adults hope and a sense of purpose that helps them live their best life. Chelsea Place Senior Care (named after his wife, Chelsea) includes adult day care, private in-home care services, and assisted living. Kris is the host of “The CAREpreneur” podcast and the show, “Senior Care Uncensored” which take people behind the scenes of a growing senior care organization. Kris documents exciting adventures that include taking seniors parasailing, flying, air boating, motorcycling, riding in mustang convertible, and much more. A graduate from the University of Florida with a BS in Business Administration, Kris and his wife owned, operated, and lived in an assisted living facility for the first 3 ½ years of their marriage. Key Takeaways Offering senior living services on site and at home allows a continuum of carethat meets people where they are. Senior living must attract a younger generation of service workers to the industry. Employees can make a difference in people's lives. Chelsea's active day care leverages technology, for example, a 9' x 16' foot video wall that broadcasts interactive experiences and Obie, provides an active play platform.

Meet Roy Afflerbach, a huge advocate for Adult Day Services. Roy is the Public Policy Advisor for NADSA and formerly in the legislature in the state of Pennsylvania. Roy has always had an interest in politics. He started his career early when he was in high school, helping campaign for John F. Kennedy. He later continued his campaigning efforts for JFK's younger brother Bobby Kennedy. This is when Roy says he realized he could make a positive difference in people's lives through government. Roy learned about the key attributes of being a CAREpreneur through his work in politics - willpower, dedication, and willfulness. After serving over a decade in the Senate and House of Representatives (plus a short stent as mayor!) Roy opened his own consulting firm. Roy's consulting firm is a public policy advocacy organization that focuses on serving non-profit organizations. After some years and through the power of networking Roy found NADSA. After his own personal experiences with dementia care Roy knew this organization could benefit from his help. Flash forward a few years and Roy has been able to help NADSA make tremendous strides in gaining government legislation and assistance for adult daycare services across the nation. Roy continues to show the United States what it means to be a CAREpreneur and continues to advocate for the senior care industry for many years to come. Growing from a small 2,000 sq ft center to opening the largest adult day care center in South Florida! Meet my good friend, Yoni Gonzalez, the owner of Florida's largest family owned Adult Day Care Center. Yoni and I met at the 2018 NADSA Annual Conference and immediately we shared a similar passion for the future of adult day care. Yoni worked for a wound care company that provided services for residents living in nursing homes. After visiting many different nursing homes, he felt like there had to be a better way and that search led him to start his own adult day care center in South Florida. One of my favorite stories, Yoni shares, is the way he surprised his members when they moved from their small 2,000 sq ft space to their new 10,000 sq ft center!! You definitely don't want to miss this part of the story! Not only is Yoni passionate about the future of adult day care but he has played an extremely pivotal role at both the state and national level. Today, he serves on both the FADSA (Florida Adult Day Services Association) and NADSA (National Adult Day Services Association) board to help advance the future of adult day care services. Meet Bill Zagorski, who started his career in the microbiology field but then became CEO of American Senior Care Centers. Bill is also a board member for the National Adult Day Services Association (NADSA). Bill's family founded American Senior Care Centers in Tennessee in 1991. At first, Bill pursued a degree in microbiology from Connecticut. However, after growing tired of working in the microbiology field he decided to step up as the CEO and takeover the family business. After stepping in as the CEO in 2010 he continued to grow and expand the business. In 2014, he revived the Tennessee Adult Day Care Association which he continues to lead as the President. Once becoming more involved at a state level, he was invited to attend the National Adult Day Services Association (NADSA) Conference in 2017. The following year, he joined the research community of NADSA and by 2019, he had joined the NADSA board as the research committee chair. Bill sees the future of Adult Day Care being just as if not even more successful than some of the alternative care options such as home care or assisted living. Unfortunately, adult day care just hasn't been recognized enough for the incredible benefits it has to offer. Therefore, Bill plans to use his research and data analysis experience from the microbiology field to prove the value of adult day care to the rest of the world. #seniorcare #adultdaycare #adultdayservices _____________________________ TIMESTAMPS 0:00 - Intro / Guest: Bill Zagorski 0:43 - Starting in the Adult Day Care Industry 2:25 - Expanding Adult Day Care 3:30 - Joining NADSA & Collecting Data 6:56 - NADSA Board Experiences 8:30 - Future of Adult Day Care 10:18 - Public Education 11:00 - Outro --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/krischana/message
