Christoph Grünberger ist Designer und Typograph, der sein Skillset in den Bereichen Corporate-, Interactive- und Spatial-Design anwendet. Hier geht es ihm stets darum, die Grenzen der gegebenen Design- und Interaction-Theorie auszureizen. Diese Erkenntnisse gewinnt und kondensiert er bislang in zahlreichen Fach- Publikationen welche bei namhaften Verlegern erschienen sind. Darunter „Analog Algorithm“ welches als zeitgemässe Interpretation zur Neuauflage von Karl Gerst- ners „Designing Programmes“ 2019 bei Lars Müller, Zürich erschienen ist und zuletzt auch als Lizenzausgaben in japanischer und chinesischer Edition. Mit dem Nachfolgetitel „The Age of Data“ nutzte er die Zeit des Lockdowns während der Corona-Pandemie um 40 internationale Medienkünstler zu interviewen und ein Kompendium herauszugeben, welches eine Momentaufnahme der Kunst zwischen Post-Digital- und AI-Zeitalter wiedergibt. Als prägend bezeichnet Grünberger die während seines Studiums der Kunst- geschichte/Pädagogik erlangten Einblicke in die zeitlichen Zusammenhänge des gestalterischen Ausdrucks durch Prof. Oswald Miedl, der ihm auch anrat, seine Interessen im Studium des Kommunikationsdesigns weiter zu verfolgen. Auf verschiedenen nationalen und internationalen Konferenzen, Panels und Work- shops versucht Grünberger diese Entwicklung der computergestützten Gestal- tung voranzutreiben. 2022 moderierte er ein Panel auf der OFFF in Barcelona mit Refik Anadol und Flo Ortkrass (RANDOM INTERNATIONAL) in dieser Kombination hielt er im selben Jahr ein Interview mit Ian Anderson (The Designers Republik™). Für 2024 sind Panels geplant für Mouvo (Prag), Charlottesville Designweek (USA) und OFFF Mexiko). Bevor er bei Jung von Matt im Dezember 2022 als Principal Creative Art anfing, war Grünberger über 20 Jahre als freiberuflicher Art-Director bei Designagen- turen wie KMS-Team, BLACKSPACE, Mutabor oder R/GA tätig. 2005-2009 war er Partner von Stefan Gandl bei NEUBAU™ in Berlin. Hier entstanden Werke wie NeubauModul und NeubauISM, seinerzeit von Wim Crouwel eröffnet. Seit November 2023 leitet er als Head of Artificial Crafts die hauseigene AI-Unit welche sich neben der Anwendung neuer Prozesse auch auf das Identifizieren dieser spezialisiert und mit diesem Service die gesamte Jung von Matt Gruppe zu empowern.

December 2013, Typeradio held a two day workshop in cooperation with Indra Kupferschmid and 10 students of the Hochschule der Bildenden Künste (HBK Saar) in Saarbrücken, Germany. Each student was assigned a typeface, designed by a Dutch designer, along with the assignment: ‘translate the typeface into a one minute sound piece’.
The resulting 10 sound pieces were the starting point of another workshop, in collaboration with Jan Willem Stas and the students of the Type]Media 2014 typography master coarse in The Hague, The Netherlands. Each T]M student was handed an (anonymously labelled) sound piece and their challenge was to ‘create a typeface concept inspired by the sound’. The results were quite surprising! 1) Original typeface: New Alphabet by Wim Crouwel 2) Sound piece by Jennifer Graf & Barbara Hinz 3) Chinese whispered typeface by Hugo Timothée Marucco Hugo based his type concept mostly on the structure of the sound which was composed of two distinct parts. Indeed, the first one is a fast loop of digital sounds evoking the old video game universe, like early Pong or Tetris. The second part is completely different. The rhythm is a lot slower and almost silent, we only hear some traditional Chinese instruments. This two layer-structure became the main concept of Hugo’s typeface; Digital and Zen. He wanted to mix these different feelings without losing the particularities of each part. “That is why I came up with this idea of drawing a monospaced font with two widths and weights. I only drew caps to keep the blocky aesthetic of a pixel games. It was important to visually express the atmosphere of the music. Mixing the two styles you get a really noisy or quiet feeling, the more you mix them the less legible it gets. This fourth interview in the series continues the discussion at the Design Museum, London, with a conversation between Deyan Sudjic (Museum Director) and Wim Crouwel. The interview took place at the museum during Wim Crouwel: A Graphic Odyssey, the first retrospective exhibition of his work in the UK. Regarded as one of the leading designers of the twentieth century, Crouwel embraced a new modernity to produce typographic designs that captured the essence of the emerging computer and space age of the early 1960s. Spanning over 60 years, Wim Crouwel: A Graphic Odyssey covers Crouwel's rigorous design approach and key moments in his career including his work for design practice Total Design, the identity for the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, as well as his iconic poster, print, typography and lesser known exhibition design.
