A light breeze brushed through the pollinator gardens surrounding the Museum. Happy children and singing birds filled the Museum courtyard with sound. All this noise didn't bother me; I zoned into the pollinator garden. I was completing my weekly butterfly survey as a participant in the Wisconsin Statewide Community Science Project. Madison Book Beat host Gil Halsted sits down in the studio with Nick Vander Puy, journalist and author of the recent book “Water Protectors: The H.E.L.P Campaign to Save the Penokees” (Strong Dog Press, July 2022).It's a book that details the Harvest Educational Learning Project, or H.E.L.P. campaign, a coalition of tribal citizens, environmentalists and neighbors who occupied treaty-protected lands in the Penokee Hills, in Ashland and Iron Counties of Wisconsin's Northwoods. The Penokees, elevated ridges that contain some of the oldest rocks in Wisconsin, are the headwaters of the Bad River and eventually flow into Lake Superior. That campaign was successful at halting Gogebic Taconite – a multinational mineral corporation- from embarking on a plan for an open-pit mine. And it's one instructive example for grassroots activists and water protectors everywhere.Vander Puy will appear at an author event at Kismet Bookshop in Verona this Tuesday, March 21, at 5pm.

A thrift shop in Wisconsin's Northwoods is a stark contrast to the typical Black Friday scene. Bargain hunters in the Minocqua shop from far and wide find deals on clothing, cabin décor and everything in between. Journalist Jane Hampden brings us the story.
Host Bob St.Pierre is joined by Douglas Spale, a hardcore bird hunter and newest member of the Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever National Board of Directors. The guys talk about Douglas' Nebraska roots, his “Bird Dog in the City” blog series, and how our podcast episode with Erik Petersen changed his life's trajectory. Episode Highlights: • The guys kick off the conversation with Spale's impressions upon returning from his first ruffed grouse and woodcock hunt in Wisconsin's Northwoods, a stark contrast to the Great Plains where Spale is accustomed to bird hunting. • Spale shares the poignant stories of his adoption, the important role hunting plays in his connection to family, and the tremendous bond formed with his first young Lab pup upon returning to the city following his father's recovery from cancer. • Douglas also talks about the absence of Black role models in bird hunting throughout his childhood and how he's hoping to help fill that niche with Erik Petersen's son, Kasa.
The black bear is a living symbol of Wisconsin's Northwoods. Summer visitors thrill at seeing one, and hunters look forward to the opportunity to take part in a seasonal bear hunt. Black bears are important to the Northwoods, but in the not-so-distant past they were seen as more of a nuisance with hunters taking unlimited numbers.
In this month's installment of Field Notes, Scott Bowe of Kemp Station discusses bees in Wisconsin's Northwoods.
