Norbert from Wisconsin Rapids wanted the breakdown: What's the difference between a Cardinal Bishop, Cardinal Priest, and Cardinal Deacon? Patrick’s Explanation: 1. Cardinal Bishops: -These are the most senior cardinals. -They hold titular jurisdiction over ancient dioceses called the "suburbicarian sees" around Rome: places like Ostia and Porto. -They're not the real working bishops of those dioceses, more like honorary guardians. -Seniority here isn’t just about age; it’s about how long you’ve been a cardinal. 2. Cardinal Priests: Rome’s Titular Pastors -These cardinals are linked to one of Rome’s ancient churches. -It’s honorary, but each one is assigned a "titular church" to symbolize their bond with the diocese of Rome. 3. Cardinal Deacons: -Historically, these guys were the ones running the Church’s day-to-day in Rome. -After 10 years, a Cardinal Deacon can be "promoted" to Cardinal Priest. So… Are These Ranks Like Holy Orders? Nope! These don’t mean “holier” or “more sacramentally powerful.” This ranking is about honor and duty, not sacramental hierarchy. Bonus Wisdom: -The word "cardinal" comes from Latin cardo, meaning hinge. These are the “hinge men”: the inner circle who support the Pope and, when the time comes, elect the next one. As the Church preps for the conclave, Patrick reminds us: Stay close to Relevant Radio for all the upcoming news of the Conclave. Pray with us every evening at 7:00 PM CT for the Family Rosary Across America for the needs of the Church and for our leaders. You can hear the funeral coverage for Pope Francis Saturday morning at 2:50 AM CT and rebroadcasted at 12:00 PM CT later in the day on Relevant Radio.

Addie Teeter joins us on this cold winter morning, and she brings even more of a chill with her by talking about the Special Olympics "Polar Plunge" coming up over the next several weeks in Northeast Wisconsin. From Madison to Milwaukee, to Wisconsin Rapids to Whitewater, the Special Olympics likely has a plunge coming to a location near you! Special Olympics works to create a new world of inclusion and community through sports. Then Rob Demovsky from ESPN joins to talk about the atmosphere at Sunday's Packers/Eagles game. Apparently, there was a woman sitting in front of the press box, and she was screaming vulgarities at the broadcast crew and the Packer's staff. Rob had to "gently" remind her to have a seat and close her mouth. :) Maino and the Mayor is a part of the Civic Media radio network and airs Monday through Friday from 6-9 am on WGBW in Green Bay and on WISS in Appleton/Oshkosh. Sitting down for a hot meal with loved ones is a luxury that most of us have every day. But for Wisconsin's rural seniors who may be homebound, isolated, and unable to prepare their own food… the story is different. Ronda James is the nutrition program director at the Aging and Disability Resource Center in Central Wisconsin. They serve Langlade, Lincoln, Marathon, and Wood counties with the Meals on Wheels program. Just last year, their small team and 350+ volunteers delivered 145,000 meals to more than 1,300 residents. Unfortunately, James says their costs have gone up about 30 percent as the demand for the program also grows. She says Wisconsin's older population (60+) has skyrocketed in the past decade. Nearly a third of that entire population is rural. James says the Meals on Wheels program would not exist without volunteers. Delivery routes sometimes creep up to 60 miles in total. That's 30 miles from a "city center" such as Merrill, Antigo, or Wisconsin Rapids. Marathon County is the largest geographic county in Wisconsin, so it's hard to reach the farthest corners of the county with volunteers because it takes 80-100 miles in a day, James says. We also hear from volunteer Tony Omernik who says the work is worth it.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, is led into the wilderness where He fasts for forty days and is tempted by the devil. He resists each temptation using the Word of God. Afterward, Jesus returns to Galilee and begins His ministry, teaching in synagogues. In Nazareth, His hometown, He reads from Isaiah in the synagogue, proclaiming the fulfillment of the prophecy in Himself. Initially, the people marvel at His words, but their admiration turns to anger when He speaks of God's grace extending to Gentiles. They drive Him out of town, intending to throw Him off a cliff, but He miraculously passes through the crowd unharmed. The Rev. Matthew Lorfeld, pastor of St. John Lutheran Church in Wisconsin Rapids, WI, joins the Rev. Dr. Phil Booe to study Luke 4:1-30. The Gospel of Luke, filled with rich narratives and detailed accounts, offers an inspired and historical perspective on the life and teachings of Jesus. Emphasizing Jesus' concern for the poor, outcasts, and social justice, this Gospel narrates parables and miracles that underscore the theme of God's salvation for all people. Luke's account is unique in its inclusion of the birth of John the Baptist, the parable of the Good Samaritan, and the story of the Prodigal Son, culminating in a vivid portrayal of Jesus' death and resurrection, affirming the universal offer of redemption. This Gospel serves as an invitation to understand the depth of God's love and the breadth of His grace extended to humanity through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus.
There's a new face at the Wisconsin State Cranberry Growers Association headquarters in Wisconsin Rapids as Grant Holley has joined the association staff as the new Executive Director. With a rich background in agriculture, education, and science, Holley brings a unique blend of expertise and enthusiasm to the cranberry industry. Holley, formerly a professor at North Carolina State University, shared his journey to the cranberry realm, stating, “My transition from academia to the cranberry sector was driven by a passion for agriculture and a desire to work with the "absolute best people" in the industry.” Upon assuming his new role, Holley acknowledges the significant legacy left by his predecessor, Tom Lochner, who served the association for 35 years. "Tom was able to put us on the map...he set us up with a number of tools that's going to help us go for the next 5 and even 10 years," Holley noted, emphasizing his intention to build upon Lochner's foundation. “My background comes with strong agricultural roots, and I am proud to be working with such a keystone industry in Wisconsin,” said Holley. “Advocacy, research, and sustainability in a changing world will all be areas for focus. Grower families have been part of this organization for more than 135-years and we will all work very hard to ensure another century, or two, of prosperity and culture to the area.”See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Troy Oleson was born and raised in the Northwoods of Wisconsin – home to good old fashioned Midwestern winters. The snow-drifted ditches are deep and the trails through trees are tight, but the beauty is often something to behold. Originally from Wisconsin Rapids, Wis., Oleson is a third-generation Ski-Doo rider who cut his teeth like most riders in this area of the snowbelt – with his grandfather at the age of five. Someone who enjoys the people of the sport almost more than the ride, you'll always find a smile under his helmet and more than few miles clicked off his odometer.SHARE YOUR PHOTOS/VIDEO LINKS on a future episode - email along with a brief story/description mailto:fanphoto@mudbrats.com (HAVE A VIDEO? Ana and Eric light the fire on Wood County, a diverse county in the heart of Wisconsin offering cities like Marshfield, a major medical hub, and Wisconsin Rapids, known for its papermaking, water skiing, golf, and - more recently - competitive BMX racing, as well as beautiful, serene rural areas from farms to forest and plenty of open space for outdoor fun. They open the Cabin door for Matt McLean from Visit Marshfield and Meredith Kleker from the Wisconsin Rapids Convention & Visitors Bureau for an in-depth look at the county they both call home. One major note about Wood County is its penchant for cranberries. Not only do they produce a sizable share of Wisconsin's cranberry crop (which leads the nation and is tops among the world), Pittsville is home to the only Cranberry Program in a high school and a “Cranberry Road” Auto Tour offers people the opportunity for a colorful tour of the bogs and marshes. Pittsville is also the geographic center of the state, by the way, in case you were curious about why we say Wood County is in the heart of Wisconsin. Outdoor adventures abound in the county, from bountiful hunting areas to beautiful trails; designated areas like the Mead Wildlife Area offers opportunities for both. Powers Bluff near the center of the county is a literal standout, rising prominently among the landscape while offering winter recreation from tubing to snowboarding. Wood County is becoming more of a golf destination, from nearby Sand Valley to Lake Arrowhead. The Wisconsin River, which runs along the eastern side of the county and right through Wisconsin Rapids, is home to active water ski groups who put on popular shows in season. We dive into Wisconsin Rapids with Meredith, checking out the city's sports offerings from its Central Wisconsin BMX track to baseball games at Witter Field for Wisconsin Rapids Rafters action - and unique way they deliver beers to you! If hockey is more your sport, the Wisconsin Rapids River Kings have you covered in winter. The city's paper history is showcased in the Papermaking Museum, and one of the newer breweries in the state, Two Doors Down Brewing, is right downtown, not far from Hotel Mead, Wisconsin Rapids; own boutique hotel. Matt highlights Marsjhfield with us, including art galleries, museums, historic sites, the World's Largest Round Barn on the Central Wisconsin State Fairgrounds, and some excellent shopping up and down the city's main drag, Central Avenue. Blue Heron Brewpub is Marshfield's own brewery, and if you want to wander among some remarkable sculptures and metal art, the Jurustic Walk downtown will mesmerize. Marshfield also offers a fantastic (and free) zoo in Wildwood Park, which features an impressive display holding two Kodiak bears along with a wide variety of other animals. Wisconsin's reputation for cheese shines in Nasonville with their dairy and the very popular Dairy State Cheese Store in Rudolph, which also has the amazing Rudolph Grotto nearby and is the home of Dick Trickle and other popular race car drivers. We cover it all in this episode - make sure you cover all of Wood County to truly experience it! Wood County: https://www.woodcountywi.gov/Visit Marshfield: https://www.visitmarshfield.com/. Learn more here; https://bit.ly/3TSFYY4 Campfire Conversation:Eric and Ana – with Logan too – hit the water in this Campfire Conversation, highlighting some Wisconsin's “Must Visit” water recreation locations. Much of the conversation begins in the north, with the Apostle Islands and its bevy of options in Lake Superior. The Brule River, known as the “River of Presidents” for its history as a popular fishing and getaway spot for U.S. presidents in the early 20th century, also gets some love as its flows into Lake Superior not too far to the west. Hopping the subcontinental divide, the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway offers all of fun and natural beauty you could expect from a river. The Wild Rivers Conservancy is active along the river, and the waterfalls coupled with fishing, paddling, and hiking along the shore offer abundant options for an adventurous day. We also cover the Vets on the River Program, which is active on the St. Croix. Flowing into the St. Croix in western Wisconsin is the Apple River, which offers tubing, floating, and a variety of popular water recreation activities in the areas around Somerset, making it a big summer destination. Of course the Wisconsin River gets its due, whether you're fishing in the Eagle River area, water skiing with the best of them in Wisconsin Rapids, touring the sandstone and limestone bluffs around Wisconsin Dells, or kayaking the Lower Wisconsin Waterway. The Wolf River runs through much of the North Woods and offers unbelievably amazing fishing. Ana dives into the Madison “chain o' lakes” (literally too, in real life) as she and Eric discuss the many options of Lake Mendota, Monona, Wingra, Waubesa, and Kegonsa in the Capitol region. Other chains of lakes popular in Wisconsin also draw a wide variety of water recreation opportunities, including the chains around Eagle River, the Cisco chain on the Wisconsin-U.P. border west of Land O'Lakes, and the Waupaca Chain O'Lakes. In the south, Geneva Lake and its nearby companions – including Delavan Lake and Lake Como – draw plenty of crowds but still offer areas of serenity. Geneva Lake is one of the deepest spring-fed lakes in the state; Green Lake, in central Wisconsin, takes the title of the deepest. Its also hugely popular for boating, fishing, and water skiing. Up for whitewater rafting? Head to northeastern Wisconsin and check out the rapids on the Menomonee River! Comparisons to rivers in the Mountain West are frequently made to a section of the Menomonee between Niagara and Pembine, where the rapids and drops are truly an adventure. The Peshtigo River in Oconto and Marinette Counties also offers fantastic kayaking and canoeing; the whole area teems with waterfalls. For extra twists and turns, we recommend heading to the Driftless Region in southwestern Wisconsin and exploring the Kickapoo River, which is one of the crookedest rivers in the Midwest – if not the country. Some great options for rentals can be found in Ontario, near Wildcat Mountain State Park. We didn't forget the cities, either: explore charter fishing opportunities off the lakeshore in Kenosha, Racine, Milwaukee, Port Washington, Sheboygan, Manitowoc, Algoma, Kewaunee, Sturgeon Bay, Green Bay, Oconto, or Marinette on Lake Michigan, or from Ashland, Bayfield, or Superior on Lake Superior! And for paddling in urban areas, it's hard to beat the La Crosse area on the Black and Mississippi Rivers – especially Pools 7 and 8 – or kayaking amidst the bustling action and tall buildings in Milwaukee on the Milwaukee, Menomonee, or Kinnickinnic Rivers in the heart of the city. Let's just say your options are many – and we offer plenty to choose from on The Cabin today! Picking up a guitar before he ever hopped on a school bus, Chris Kroeze knew from a young age what he wanted to do when he grew up. Becoming so attached to it as a six year old, there's a picture in the family photo album of the little boy falling asleep with one tucked under his arm. Twenty five years later, not much has changed.Married and a father of two, Kroeze still lives in Barron, population 3,659, a small town in Northwestern Wisconsin. Having long been a household name across The Badger State and with a runner up finish on NBC's The Voice a few seasons ago, success hasn't changed Barron's favorite son one bit. Humble, soft spoken and easy to talk to, Chris has all the characteristics of the Mr. Nice Guy that holds the door for you at the neighborhood Kwik Trip but can rock the house at a moments notice. Once he takes the stage, two decades of picking a guitar quickly grab your attention along with a voice that doesn't come around too often.Writing songs that vividly capture life here in the Midwest and bring the listener into the story, you can quickly pick up his musical roots that range from classic country to southern rock. My wife and I watched Kroeze and his band in Wisconsin Rapids last Friday night as they entertained the nearly sold out crowd for close to two hours. With a mix of covers and original music, I saw a man that loved what he did for a living and did it well. Human, a song penned for his finale on The Voice, was my favorite of the evening and I look forward to hearing him play it again in April in an acoustic setting for our HHAUSA weekend outside of Madison. Thanks to longtime friend and HHA supporter Kurt Walbeck of Outdoor Bound TV, we got connected to Kroeze through Brew Pub Lotzza Mottza Pizza. Having travelled abroad many times to entertain the military, he was a natural fit for the crowd at our biggest event to date. I also have to thank Matt "Mottza Matt" Selvig and his team, for putting this show together. An avid outdoorsman, I look forward to getting to know Chris better on a personal level and collaborate more in the future to support our service men and women. Gifted with the God given talent to pick and sing, I appreciate his heart for the Veteran community and encourage anyone that appreciates good music and good people to take in a Chris Kroeze show the next time he's in your area. Here at HHAUSA, we like to support and promote the good guys, and Chris most definitely fits the bill. You can follow Chris on Facebook, Instagram, YouTube and check out his website at www.chriskroezemusic.comFor more information about HHAUSA and how you can support our mission, visit www.hhausa.orgTo purchases HHAUSA hats, shirts, challenge coins and tumblers, visit www.hhasports.com
The Rev. Matthew Lorfeld, pastor of St. John Lutheran Church in Wisconsin Rapids, WI, joins the Rev. Dr. Phil Booe to study Judges 1. The first chapter of Judges recounts the Israelites' initial conquest of the Promised Land after Joshua's death. They had one job: to eradicate the inhabitants of the promised land. However, because they failed to drive out all the Canaanites, the remaining inhabitants became a thorn in their side. This chapter sets the stage for the rest of the book, demonstrating the Israelites' fickle obedience and the consequences that follow. The Book of Judges tells the story of Israel's descent into chaos and idolatry, and the subsequent rise of a series of judges, or redeemers, who deliver them from their enemies. The judges are flawed heroes, but they are also instruments of God's deliverance. The book ends with the Israelites in a state of moral and spiritual decay, but it also offers hope for a better future.

It's no secret that we aren't believers in coincidence at HHAUSA and meeting this week's guest was anything but last summer in Appleton Wisconsin. In town for Mission 20, three close friends and previous guests on the podcast, Aaron Ritter, Al Quackenbush, Jeff Litteral and myself were out for dinner. Passing a Crumble Cookie earlier, it sounded like a great idea for dessert so the four of us piled into my truck and were soon wide eyed at the kiosk placing our order. The couple in front of us were waiting for their sugar filled delicacies when the husband turned around hearing our conversation. Much to my surprise, Jonathan McGlin was sporting a BowAdx hat. While I am a huge fan of the company and owner Chad Davis, I don't see much of their apparel in my travels so it was a pleasant surprise for us all. The grin on McGlin's face grew wider when he noticed me and Jeff sporting BowAdx gear as well. The six of us would adjourn to my tailgate in the parking lot, broke out the cookies and spent the next half hour talking hunting, faith, HHAUSA and how thankful we were for divine appointments and new friends.Jonathan had previously been on the Elk Shape Podcast, discussing his goal of going on his first elk hunt in 2024. Wanting to shed some weight and improve his physical conditioning and overall health, his podcast was familiar to both Aaron and Al...another "coincidence". McGlin would stop out that Saturday, tagging along for a few targets at our fundraiser and getting to know his new friends a bit better. Unable to stay for the entire day and shoot, he did join me and my group later in the summer in Wisconsin Rapids at Mission 23. Able to meet other members of the HHAUSA family including Veteran Brad Rothermel, it was safe to say that he was hooked. I have no doubt that we will be seeing more of him at our events in 2023.Growing up hunting with his father, Jonathan's relationship with his dad was tested in his early teens. Active in the Wisconsin National Guard, the elder McGlin was home on weekends but spent a lot of time across the state at Fort McCoy during the week, missing out on a few things as his boy became a man. But they could always count on spending opening weekend of deer season together, a tradition that Jonathan credits for his deep love for the outdoors. Having long ago mended fences, the two enjoy hunting together now and time has given Jonathan a much deeper appreciation for the sacrifices that his father made for his family and his country.A season ticket holder at Lambeau Field, McGlin texted me a few weeks ago about the Monday night Packers Rams game. He was interested in bringing a Veteran to the historic venue and through yet another divine appointment, we were able to connect Rothermel with Jonathan to experience his first trip to the Frozen Tundra. I had introduced the two when we shot together in Rapids and a great time was had by all, thanks to McGlin's generosity and God doing what only He can do.Both men of faith, passionate about the outdoors and helping others, Jonathan and I instantly hit it off and have stayed in touch frequently in the six months since our predestined meeting in July. There are so many little things that go on behind the scenes of what we do at HHAUSA that the public never sees or hears about and this story had to be shared. Friendships like these are a part of that and blessings that I didn't even consider when we started our organization. I am so thankful for men like Jonathan in my life and for his support for those who serve and have served our country. It's hard talk to my good friend and our podcast editor Logan Chartrand, especially as we draw closer to Christmas, without the conversation turning to Little Debbie. After taking care of that important piece of business, we also discuss the recent success that his son and father had in the woods during the Missouri gun opener. I love hearing those stories of hunters across multiple generations enjoying the outdoors together each fall. Here's to the Chartrands and countless other families like theirs that are keeping the sacred traditions of hunting alive.Chit chat aside, we dive into what you have all hopefully been waiting for: the unveiling of the 2023 HHAUSA 3D Shoot Schedule. Carefully thought out over the past six months (and with a considerable amount of prayer), we had to make some difficult decisions going into next year. That included saying goodbye to four great archery clubs in The Badger State. Rib Mountain Bowmen, Waushara Archers, Twin City Rod and Gun Club and Blackhawk Archers of Stevens Point will not be on the calendar for 2023. While we have made some great friends at those ranges and events over the years and appreciate all of their support, it was time for us to expand our footprint a bit.Dropping down from six to four shoots, we kick off the season in the Madison area with a two day 3D event at Blackhawk Archers in Verona April 29th and 30th. But that's not all. Joe Rhodes from The Kneistedt Foundation will be joining us to host a sporting clays shoot at the Oregon Sportsman's Club and Brian Austin and The Beastmode Archery Challenge will be putting on an endurance event at Tyrol Basin, both on Saturday the 29th. That evening, we will also be hosting a Meet and Greet at Tyrol with a few surprises for all in attendance. After a two month break, we head back to the Tomah Warrens Sportsman's Alliance for a two day shoot July 8th and 9th. In what is sure to be a fun weekend, the guys from Chase Nation and The Breaking Point will be on hand for some friendly competition with a twist. We look forward to making this our biggest and best event yet with TWSA in the heart of Cranberry Country.Four weeks later on August 5th and 6th we head to the Racine Instinctive Bowmen just south of Milwaukee. Don't be fooled by the name, these guys are serious about compounds and have an amazing range across nearly 200 acres. Partnering with Bowhunting.com and the Bowhunt or Die crew and can't wait to make this a regular stop on the tour. For those of you willing to fly in from around the country, this will be your best bet as the Milwaukee airport is a short drive with Chicago less than an hour away as well. The HHAUSA Banquet will return to Wisconsin Rapids on Friday, August 18th, hosted once again by Whitetails Unlimited. To make the weekend even more special and worth the trip, our fourth shoot of 2023 is just a 5 minute drive up the road at Antler Archers the 19th and 20th. Our hometown archery club, this shoot just keeps getting better each year. With a couple other things in the works for the weekend, you don't want to miss it.While the plan was to expand beyond state lines in 2023 with an event or two, that is still to be determined. We are still in talks to pull something together and if that happens, we will share it here first. Beyond excited about what the future holds for HHAUSA, we cannot thank you all enough for the continued support. Whether it's been attending a shoot, buying our HHAUSA apparel, making a donation to the cause or listening in each week, you are helping to make a difference in the lives of our Veterans, First Responders and Law Enforcement Officers. I may sound like a broken record but we are just getting started and I look forward to seeing you all soon on the range. Until then, Happy Thanksgiving and God bless! Dawn's mom, Lana Adams, was roped into recording with her while on a visit to Los Angeles from the small town of Wisconsin Rapids - in central Wisconsin. We learn that Lana is a little shy, but very smart, well-traveled - and wise in the ways of packing 'a roadie.' 00:09:13 - Dawn asks Lana why she chose The Radium Girls as her HILF and she gives her primary sources and plan for the episode:BOOK: The Radium Girls by Kate Moore MOVIE: The Radium Girls (2020 - Starring Joey King, Mixed Reviews...) 00:16:13 - To grasp the setting and time of this story, Dawn begins with the history of the Industrial Revolution which was introduced the factories in which such stories were even possible. 00:21:16 - A little about the history of the element, Radium, itself. It was discovered by Marie Curie and before she knew how dangerous it was (spoiler alert, it would kill her) she called it 'my beautiful Radium' because it glowed in the dark. As factories were working out how it could be used and more importantly marketed, WWI gave them a perfect use: watch faces for our guys in the trenches. 00:25:46 - The first signs that the women who worked as painters for the various Radium Corporations, was jaw and tooth pain. It was so extreme and debilitating that one woman died shortly after her entire jaw fell off. Miscarriages, still births and cancers were rampant and the women began to ask for answers from the factory heads... which when things got really scary. --BREAK--Listen to MAY IT DISPLEASE THE COURT hosted by Attorney, Mary Whiteside. 00:36:00 - Dawn checks in with Mom to see how she's feeling about her first-ever podcast experience and she's doing great, sober an' everything!00:38:33 - The Radium Girls' story inspired Dawn to go down some rabbit holes in history to discuss some of the other worst work-place malfeasance of the past and woof... buckle up. We start with The Breaker Boys whose case was brought to (literal) light by the intrepid photographer, Lewis Hine. 00:45:24 - Dawn asks Lana what was the worst job she's ever had. She confesses she's always been really lucky and has truly enjoyed her work... but she's never worked retail so...00:48:27 - Next is the story from 1897 in Pennslyvania: The Lattimer Massacre. Unarmed men, shot in the back by deputized posse. All but one of them were Slavic, German immigrants. Many of them had been scabs during a previous strike by the “English-speaking” miners but then joined forces as a large miner collective that was attacked brutally.00:51:45 - It's Dawn's turn to talk about her worst job ever and although it involves cold, and fear, and isolation - Lana loving reminds her that her jaw didn't fall off and it all has a bit more perspective. 00:55:00 - The very last workplace disaster the two discuss is included in this episode if only for the incredible scope of the destruction. In the Texas City Industrial Disaster - when (among other things) a freighter full of fertilizer explodes - over 600 people are left dead and over 1,000 injured. Holy shit, right? ---If you want to reach out to HILF, please do! We are on social media @HILFPODCAST or you can email us hilfpodcast@gmail.com.

Matt Renwick is an elementary principal in Mineral Point, Wisconsin. Previously he served as an assistant principal, athletic director, coach, and classroom teacher in Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin. Matt was recognized as a Friend of Literacy by the Wisconsin State Reading Association in 2020 and received the Kohl Leadership Award in 2021. His books include 5 Myths About Classroom Technology: How do we integrate digital tools to truly enhance learning? (ASCD, 2016), Digital Portfolios in the Classroom: Showcasing and Assessing Student Work (ASCD, 2017), and Leading Like a C.O.A.C.H.: 5 Strategies for Supporting Teaching and Learning (Corwin, 2022). You can find Matt on Twitter @ReadbyExample. -Matt has always enjoyed coaching children and athletics. He found his way into many roles in education and fostered a strong interest in literacy as well as engagement with readers and writers. -What have I learned around literacy and leadership? This is where this book was born, Leading Like a C.O.A.C.H.: 5 Strategies for Supporting Teaching and Learning. -Educational Improvement- Matt used to have more of a linear approach. Coming into administration, he thought he could present an idea, then teachers would adopt them, and schools would improve. He realized everyone is coming from a slightly different angle as to what is best practice. It is way more complex than this. He has learned he has to engage with every teacher and build deep trust. Therefore, knowing where each teacher is and being able to work from there is the best starting point for improvement. -Instructional walks are powerful. We need to be leading as a learner, in a more reciprocal and mutually beneficial relationship with faculty, which has better results with everyone's learning, including his own. -Leading like a C.O.A.C.H.- Matt likes to: Pay attention to myself and others. Be mindful of how he is feeling. Listen first and hear where they are coming from. Use paraphrasing. Shift from giving advice and needing to know everything to asking more questions, listening deeply, and being the listener first. Allow others to solve their problems when possible. C-Creating Confidence through Trust O-Organizing Around a Priority A- Affirming Promising Practices - noticing and naming strengths already present C- Communicating Feedback H- Help Teachers Become Leaders and Learners - Support self directness -Building confidence and trust is always at the forefront. When we are clear on what we are working on in order to press forward together more progression is made. -Make sure we honor the difficulties and loneliness of teaching. Be empathetic and also provide perspective. -Instructional Walks - Take a photo and put it in a brief email to follow up with that educator. It is his opportunity to build context. Write down what you see and hear as a narrative. Give that feedback from an affirming stance. - Collects the narrative and notes in a digital drive in order to show educators the wins they are having with their kids. He documents how he is in their corner, and also is able to build from moving forward. We need to recognize the good first, and then hear the feedback. We help them to create an artifact of what they do everyday and a case as to how they are effective. We share the wins they are getting with kids. Teachers also collect artifacts for themselves. -If you are recognized first you are much more receptive to feedback. -Get into classrooms and just start to document five or six words of what you noticed. Get to every classroom, then take the time to reflect on your own as an administrator, or with a coach around trends or patterns we are seeing. Then communicate these to staff. From there, we can design professional learning around those goals. This is where collective commitments can come into play and have tremendous power. -Leaders need to know literacy - Regie Routman -Pausing is the superpower. I have never gotten in trouble or made a mistake when I did not say something. It has always been when I said something and wished I could have taken it back. 56: All About the Victims On this weeks episode Mims finished going over the last of Jeffrey Dahmer's victims: David Thomas, Curtis Straughter, Errol Lindsey, Anthony Hughes, Konerak Sinthasomphone, Matt Turner, Jeremiah Weinberger, Oliver Lacy, and Joseph Bradehoft, may you rest in peace. Falon the continues on with Spooky October by covering the Pfister Hotel in Milwaukee and Hotel Mead in Wisconsin Rapids.
One of my greatest shortcomings is that I seldom take time to rest. Between being a business owner, running a nonprofit, having a weekly podcast, and trying to be a good husband, family man and friend, it doesn't leave me with a ton of free time. Having danced too close to the edge at least once or twice a year for the past decade, I have to consciously tell myself to slow down, usually with a reminder from my wife and a few close friends. If I don't, I start juggling too many things and run the risk of being less effective in all areas of my life. Since rediscovering my faith in 2016, God has shown me what true rest really looks like. While still a work in progress, I feel that I'm doing a better job of self care and as a result, operating in a more positive headspace on a regular basis.I decided in early September to take a few weeks off from the podcast to rest, reflect on the successes of the 2022 HHAUSA event season and begin working on next year. Missions 21 and 23 rounded out the shoot schedule and we hosted our first ever HHAUSA Banquet in partnership with our good friends at Whitetails Unlimited. The third film in the HHAUSA Film Series from Sam Ubl and Chase Nation debuted that evening, featuring my trip to Washington DC in July on the Old Glory Honor Flight. It also included the presentation of a $70,000 check to Never Forgotten Honor Flight out of Mosinee. The culmination of a three year goal to fund a full flight out of central Wisconsin, it was there where that I really developed my love for our Veterans and where many of the ideas for HHAUSA originated.Successes aside, it was also a bittersweet summer as we moved throughout Wisconsin. knowing that the time was coming to move on to other cities and regions that will allow us to grow the organization and impact more lives in the Veteran and First Responder communities. That said, we will not be returning to Waushara Archers in Wautoma, Rib Mountain Bowmen in Wausau, Twin City Rod & Gun Club in Neenah or Blackhawk Archers of Stevens Point in 2023. We want to thank these clubs for opening their doors and ranges to us over the last few years and taking us to the next level. They will continue to receive our support on the for profit side for their club functions and we strongly encourage you to check out their shoot schedules in 2023 and beyond. Tomah Warrens Sportsman's Alliance in Warrens and Antler Archers in Wisconsin Rapids will once again be hosting events for HHAUSA in 2023. We have two other cities confirmed and waiting on a third with the complete lineup for next year due out in late November.A quick weekend trip to Nashville for a 3D shoot on 9/11 also planted seeds in The Volunteer State for what will hopefully be a great fundraising opportunity for HHAUSA next summer. Thank you to my good friends Al Quackenbush, Chad Stillman, Josh Vegors and Ira Dean for one of the greatest evenings of my life and a powerful conversation that I will never forget.Last but not least, another three year journey came to an epic conclusion on the evening of September 28th. I was blessed to harvest "Houdini", a mature Wisconsin whitetail that I had been chasing on my home farm since first spotting him on trail cameras in 2018. Tipping the scales at 200 pounds and green scoring 169" and change, he's by far the largest buck I have put on the wall in 35 years as an outdoorsman and I could not be more thankful. Overall, 2022 was a great year and I cannot thank you, our listeners, enough for the continued support of all things HHAUSA. We have some exciting things in store for 2023 and beyond and I can't wait to share those with you in the weeks and months ahead. Until then, have a safe and blessed hunt, God bless our Veterans and First Responders and God bless America!

It was the crime that shocked 1950s America, Ed Gein was born in Wisconsin in 1906 and grew up on a farm desperately attached to his strict, religious mother. When she died, his isolation and terrifying obsessions led to stealing corpses from graves and making trophies and keepsakes out of their lifeless bodies. In 1957, he was arrested for murdering two women and was arrested and institutionalized for the rest of his life. However, many believe that his spirit never left the property where he committed his atrocities. To this day, there have been reports of strange noises and sightings of a dark figure lurking around the place. His gruesome work sensationalized the small town of Plainfield, Wisconsin to its core. For years afterwards, people spoke in hushed tones about the man who had turned his farmhouse into a slaughterhouse. The inspiration for Robert Bloch's popular novel and Alfred Hitchcock's masterpiece, Psycho, Gein's real story, his psychiatric diagnoses, and his impact on (as well as being a victim of) Twentieth Century Culture is much more fascinating than just his crimes. The vestiges of the Maribel Caves Hotel lie in ruin near the town of Cooperstown in Manitowoc County. Nicknamed “Hotel Hell”, it has been home to many legends. It allegedly burnt three time, all on the same date. It was the scene of a mass murder and suicide. It was owned by Al Capone during prohibition. It served as a hideout as well as a stop for his rum-running business, which included John Dillinger. And the most intriguing, the front fountain contained a portal to hell. A legion of demons escaped and unleashed hell on the nearby town. Fortunately, a white witch stepped in and banished the demons from whence they came and sealed the portal. Although the legends may only contain kernels of truth, its ominous stone façade and dilapidated state are sure to attract even more tall tales. Mike and Jeff take a deep dive into the hotel which was built in 1900 and reveal the true history of The Maribel Caves Hotel. http://badgerlandlegends.com/hotelhell/ (Check out Hotel Hell t-shirts here) Mike Huberty, hailing from the town of Big Bend, near Milwaukee, is the owner of American Ghost Walks, a haunted history tour company with locations in Maine, California, Illinois, Minnesota, Puerto Rico, Hawaii, and started in our very own Badger State of Wisconsin - with tours in Lake Geneva, Milwaukee, Madison, Waukesha, Bayfield, and the Wisconsin Dells. In 1991, on a slow news week at the end of December, an article was published in small weekly Walworth County paper called “The Week”. The article was titled, “Tracking down “The Beast of Bray Road””. The story by Linda Godfrey detailed the rumors of a creature that stalked Walworth County along with two eyewitness interviews.Nicknamed Wisconsin's Werewolf, The Walworth County Werewolf, the Wisconsin Dogman, the Beast of Bray Road has held the imagination of Elkhorn residents since the article was published. In recent years it's attracted the attention of cryptid enthusiasts, which have resulted in a horror movie, an excellent documentary, at least two metal bands, and countless paranormal TV appearances. From analyzing the influence of the Satanic Panic to introducing previously unreported sightings, Mike and Jeff present a new take on the phenomena. Do you know the legend of Haunchyville near Muskego, Wisconsin? Near the end of Mystic Drive is supposedly a barn where a farmer hung himself. Underneath the body were many child-sized footprints all around. In the barn was a sign, scrawled in his own blood saying "The Haunchies made me do it." Whether it is a group of vengeful circus dwarves or a debauched town of Wizard of Oz's munchkins, little people have been the object of paranormal fascination for thousands of years. From leprechauns to the Lollipop Guild, join Jeff and Mike (who's actually been there!) as they head into Haunchyville to learn the truth behind the legend. Today, Devil's Lake is known as Wisconsin's most visited state park, a designation it has held for over 100 years. But, the region has been inhabited by man for nearly 500 generations. With its rich history comes plenty of legends and lore. Mike and Jeff discuss the early inhabitants, tales of Thunderbirds and lake monsters, and the many ghost stories that line the shores of the small enigmatic lake. Did a group of Crowley-ian sex magicians cast a spell on Devil's Lake? Was something conjured that still resides there today? In 2020, Devil's Lake was thrust into the headlines when it became the subject of murder a murder investigation. Who was the perpetrator of this heinous act and were they ever brought to justice? One of the Dairy State's most notorious hauntings, The Ridgeway Phantom, terrorized the Old Military Ridge Road that ran from the Fox Valley in the Northeast to Prairie du Chien in the Southwest of the state. From the 1840s, residents of the Driftless area near Ridgeway have spoken about the phantom, who acts more like a troublemaker and trickster than a traditional ghost as he stalks the road. But how could the Ridgeway Phantom have been influenced by the traditions of the Welsh and Cornish lead miners who had been coming to the area by the tens of thousands? And how similar was it to a contemporary legend happening on their home island at the exact same time. Over a century later, reports of a strange creature starting happening in Mineral Point just a few miles away. How are the cases connected and are there any recent eye witness reports of the Ridgeway Phantom? And what if it's not the spirit of a deceased human, but something completely different? From shapeshifter to vampire, this is the definitive guide to Wisconsin's most famous ghost, The Ridgeway Phantom. It's been an up and down few years for Wisconsin Rapids native Vince Biegel. The NFL linebacker had a breakout season with the Miami Dolphins in 2019, then tore his Achilles before 2020 before injuring his calf in the 2021 training camp. This year, our Patrons traveled with us for part of our trip. They joined us from Placerville to Lake Tahoe where we enjoyed some food and drink at a local park. Our Patron Members support us financially, so we can continue to help as many bikes as we can worldwide. Of course, our Patron Members get benefits and exclusive access such as meetups like this. There was an awesome day ride prepared for the members. We all met up in the morning and we all went on a beautiful day ride together. We had plenty of time to visit and get to know each other on a more personal level. We ended the day at a private location where the Patron Members enjoyed a catered dinner by Law Abiding Biker Media!. We ate, drank, and visited and it was a great time.
