What are Louisville's biggest assets and how can we best leverage those? That was recently a topic of discussion on the Access Louisville podcast. We took the weekly LBF show live for a special episode — recorded in front of an audience and with three guests: Jennifer Barber, office member in charge, Louisville, Frost Brown ToddScott Catlett, chair, Impetus for a Better Louisville and former Yum Brands Inc. chief legal and franchise officerMike Mountjoy, founding partner and chairman emeritus of MCM CPAs and Advisors (now Cherry Bekaert)All three were members of LBF's Power 50 list of Louisville's most influential business people. They are all also at different stages of their careers, with Barber making her first appearance on that list, Catlett being a regular and Mountjoy being part of the inaugural Power 50 Hall of Fame. We talked about their careers for a bit at the top of the show, with each sharing their proudest accomplishments. After the career talk, we got to talking about what Louisville should look to accomplish as a city — and they all three had great takes: On building the economy"We talk about bringing big companies here — we don't need to bring the big companies here. We need to bring people here," said Mountjoy. He advocates 0% income tax as a means of doing that. "The businesses follow the people, not the other way around. There aren't enough engineers in Louisville. There need to be more. There's not enough technology people here." On getting involved"One thing about our community is it's small enough if you want to make a difference you can," said Catlett. "There are plenty of organizations where you can contribute and make a difference and it's gonna take that. We can't look to the leaders of the past. We need people to step up — of today's generation, of tomorrow's generation — to really be a force for good in the community." On the workforce"The talent pool is still very strong. Outside of the legal industry, I think the issue for Kentucky and for Louisville is less the talent pool and more workforce participation," said Barber, noting a troubling trend within that metric. "We've got to increase our workforce participation. We're going to have to tackle some things like housing issues and childcare issues to get more Kentuckians and more Louisvillians into that talent pool." There's a lot of positive spin being put on the news that Papa John's International Inc. is opening a new global headquarters in Atlanta, instead of Louisville. And hey look, we realize the chamber of commerce and the mayor's office can't publicly scorn the company for this decision. They have to be diplomatic and congratulate Papa John's on their success and potential growth. But we don't have to be diplomatic. We're just going to come right out and say that this is the latest (and largest) company to decide that there's greener pastures out there than Louisville if you're looking to grow globally. It's a troubling trend we talk about on this week's Access Louisville podcast. Apellis Pharmaceuticals is another recent departure as our list of public companies continues to shrink in recent years. We also saw Yum Brands Inc. move the top brass out of Louisville several years back.On the show, we chat about the transition at Papa John's that led to this decision, including the appointment of its CEO Rob Lynch. We also talk about the way this news was received by leaders in Louisville. Only a few, including founder John Schnatter called it disappointing.Access Louisville is a weekly podcast from Louisville Business First. The economy is reopening — now is that a good thing or not?We talk about it on this week's episode of the Access Louisville podcast. Reporters Marty Finley and Haley Cawthon are on the show this week. Finley has been closely following government restrictions and reopening plans in Kentucky and in Indiana. Cawthon has been keeping close tabs on our restaurant businesses, which have suffered a great deal during this crisis. We go over when and how government restrictions are being lifted in each state and what retailers and restaurants think about it.We also chat about how we feel personally about the restrictions being lifted. Will we be the first in line when restaurants finally open their doors? Later in the show, Cawthon tells us how big restaurant chain earnings are looking, specifically those at Yum Brands Inc., Texas Roadhouse Inc. and Papa Johns International Inc. And we give some shoutouts to restaurants that have been crushing the delivery and takeaway game in recent weeks. We also chat about our travel plans for the year. This might be the year that Digital Editor David Mann takes a short trip to Brown County Indiana for vacation. Better than taking a plane somewhere right?Access Louisville is a weekly podcast from Louisville Business First. If you like what you hear please consider subscribing on popular podcast services.
Yum Brands Inc. announced a major acquisition. The Louisville-based restaurant conglomerate is purchasing The Habit Restaurants Inc. (Nasdaq: HABT) for $375 million. The company’s existing brands include — KFC, Pizza Hut and Taco Bell. Does this really help the stock - with such a small brand in comparison to the other YUM powerhouses, this appears to be more of a management issue.
This week on the Access Louisville podcast we discuss the news that Apellis Pharmaceuticals is leaving town. This was a promising pharmaceuticals company that’s been growing here for the last decade or so. At the beginning of 2020 it moved its operations to Boston — another hit to Louisville’s public company scene. Reporter Chris Larson tells us about the move and the recent history of local public companies — at least, those traded on the New York Stock Exchange and the NASDAQ — disappearing in mergers or other moves. We also discuss a new flavor of Girl Scout cookies, which are made here in Louisville. And Reporter Haley Cawthon tells us about a recent acquisition for Yum Brands Inc.Access Louisville is a weekly podcast from Louisville Business First. Digital Editor David A. Mann and Design/Multimedia Editor Brooke Timmons also host the show this week.
