The Crew gathered in the tunnel again this week... and immediately launched into an important discussion about BJ's memberships. The warehouse club, allegedly.Once everyone finished behaving like mature adults, the Crew turned its attention to the future AlumniFi Field and debated what its stands should be called. The nominations include legitimate club legends, the Butchers' Bleachers, the Shakira Stand, the Sex Eagle Stand and several other ideas unlikely to survive their first meeting with the sponsorship department. There is also soccer to discuss—unfortunately. The Crew revisits Detroit City FC's baffling loss to Las Vegas Lights, a match in which Le Rouge created enough chances to win comfortably and converted precisely none of them. Then comes the 2–2 draw in Miami, Tommy Silva's dramatic late equalizer and Chisom Egbuchunam's stoppage-time penalty, which traveled toward the goalkeeper with all the urgency of AlumniFi Field's original construction timeline. With DCFC heading to Oklahoma, Jam provides the definitive Tunnel Talk guide to Tulsa: visit the Woody Guthrie and Bob Dylan museums, admire the Art Deco architecture, find some pasta, drink heavily and try not to end up at another strange house party. The Crew also considers the oppressive heat, Tulsa's short rest and Jam's impeccable record of attending DCFC matches there without ever seeing Detroit win.Plus, live FC Tulsa updates that will be several days old by the time anyone hears them, Ben Morris joining the 100-appearance club, gout, sprained ankles, political shout-outs and another carefully researched episode number pulled directly from thin air. It's Tunnel Talk: serious soccer analysis for people smart enough to listen to a more serious podcast—but unwilling to do so.

Episode 664 - From Slowest at School to Comrades: Sally Pymer's Running Journey

The FitMIND FitBODY Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 3, 2026 88:56

Today on the ZenRUN Podcast, I'm chatting with the wonderful Sally Pymer - runner, Ironman athlete, Comrades finisher, former fitness instructor, counsellor, speaker, farmer's wife and strong believer in the power of a smile.   Sally grew up in regional Victoria in a family where learning, sport and community were all important.   As a young girl, she dreamed of playing AFL. Unfortunately, girls weren't allowed to join the local team, and the football boots she desperately wanted for her ninth birthday didn't arrive until her 40th.   Better late than never!   Running at school was a very different story.   Sally always tried hard, but struggled to keep up and was regularly placed in the slowest running heat. What nobody knew at the time was that Sally had chronic lung disease. It wasn't discovered until she was 19, after a chest infection landed her in hospital.   Rather than allowing the diagnosis to stop her, Sally learned to focus on what her body could do.   She might not be the person you choose for a 100-metre sprint, but give her a long-distance event and she can keep going and going.   Sally's running journey began when she entered a team triathlon through work. She was amazed that one of her teammates could run seven kilometres and decided she wanted to complete an entire triathlon herself.   She ran five kilometres once before her first event, finished third in her age group and immediately decided to do another one.   Naturally, things escalated.   After running around 15 kilometres, a friend suggested Sally should train for a marathon. Ten weeks later, she completed the 2001 Adelaide Marathon.   She went back the following year, took around 30 minutes off her time and eventually moved into Ironman events, ultramarathons and international races.   Sally has completed multiple Ironman events, competed at Half Ironman World Championships, run the Surf Coast Century and finished both the uphill and downhill versions of South Africa's famous Comrades Marathon.   She also confirms that the downhill Comrades hurts more - especially when you discover you need to climb stairs to leave the stadium!   But Sally's story isn't simply about doing more and going further.   She speaks honestly about exercise addiction, burnout and the way running can sometimes shift from something healthy into a form of escape.   Through her work as an alcohol and other drug counsellor, Sally began noticing similarities between substance dependence and her own relationship with exercise.   Running released the feel-good chemicals, filled every spare moment and became part of her identity. Eventually, she found herself constantly training, eating, working or sleeping, with very little space left for anything else.   COVID forced Sally to slow down after several Ironman events were cancelled only weeks before race day. For the first time, she discovered what it felt like to sleep in occasionally and not be exhausted all the time.   Then, in January this year, a serious bike accident forced another major pause.   Sally hit a pothole, lost consciousness, broke both little fingers and fractured her back. She couldn't run for three months and has also been navigating the lingering effects of concussion.   Her running currently looks very different.   She runs five to seven kilometres around once a week, walks regularly, strength trains and rides her mountain bike. Instead of fighting her body, she is learning to accept that this is a season of recovery.   We talk about running identity, injury, exercise withdrawal, comparison, smiling at strangers and why we are so much more than the things we do.   Sally also shares some beautiful reminders for runners:   Focus on what your body can do, rather than what it can't. Running doesn't need to be fast to count. Stop comparing your pace or distance with other runners. Pay attention to whether running is supporting your life or helping you avoid it. When injury stops you running, find other enjoyable ways to move. Accept that your running will change through different seasons of life. Take in the sounds, smells and sights around you instead of always filling your ears. Smile while you run - it may lift your mood and brighten somebody else's day too. Remember that you are much more than your job, sport or achievements.   Sally's story is an honest reminder that success isn't always about running further or faster.   Sometimes success is listening, slowing down and allowing running to become something that supports your life again.   And, of course, Sally answers Nancy Williams' Pass the Baton question:   “What is the weirdest place that you've had to go to the toilet while you're racing?”   Her answer involves 18,000 Comrades runners, an unofficial toilet and a car wash.   You'll need to listen to hear exactly what happened!   Sally also leaves a lovely Pass the Baton question for my next guest - but you'll need to listen to the episode to find out what she asks. SHE THREW AWAY EVERY FINANCIAL MODEL SHE HAD BUILT IN EIGHT YEARS ON WALL STREET. Whitney Johnson graduated from college with a music degree, arrived in New York newly married and broke, and took the only job she could get: secretary to a retail stockbroker. She watched the brokers around her open accounts and thought, I want to do that. So she took business courses at night. A boss took a chance on her and moved her into investment banking. Then, while she was pregnant and on the strength of good performance reviews, she was pushed into equity research, a move she did not want and that felt like a step down. It became the making of her career. She spent nearly eight years as an equity analyst and was Institutional Investor-ranked every single year. Then she read Clayton Christensen's The Innovator's Dilemma and realized disruption theory did not just explain the Latin American telecom stocks she covered. It explained her. She left Wall Street without keeping a single one of her models, cold-emailed Christensen one of her research reports, and eventually co-founded the Disruptive Innovation Fund with him. Today she is the CEO and co-founder of Disruption Advisors, ranked by Thinkers50 among the top ten management thinkers in the world, and the author of four bestselling books with a fifth on the way. In this conversation with host Laurie McGraw, Whitney breaks down the S Curve of Learning: why the launch point feels terrible even though your growth is mathematically at its fastest, what the sweet spot actually feels like, and why mastery is the most dangerous place to linger. IN THIS EPISODE - From music major to secretary to Institutional Investor-ranked equity analyst - The maternity-leave moment that turned an unwanted job into a career-maker - Reading The Innovator's Dilemma and realizing it applied to people, not just products - Leaving Wall Street and burning the bridges on purpose - How she reached out to Clayton Christensen, and what came of it - The S Curve of Learning explained: launch point, sweet spot, mastery - Why growth feels slowest at the exact moment it is fastest - Dopamine, inaccurate predictive models, and why beginners feel like imposters - Dr. Dan Siegel's "name it to tame it" and how to talk yourself through the discomfort - Why mastery is where careers quietly stall - "If I don't disrupt myself, the market will do it for me" - The research on women needing 100% of qualifications versus men needing 70% - Being judged on track record while men are judged on potential - Getting her hand slapped asking for compensation, and what she'd do differently - Sally Helgesen's How Women Rise and Sheryl Sandberg on naming the discomfort before the conversation - Whether Whitney still disrupts herself, and what that looks like now - AI as external disruption, and why self-regulation and calm are the real response - Pulling the stake out of the ground: self-limiting beliefs women carry - Her closing advice on connection, intuition, and discernment as superpowers Hosted by Laurie McGraw. New Zealanders are waiting almost twice as other countries to get modern medicines. US pharmaceutical research shows New Zealand's processes for registering, approving and funding modern medicines are the slowest out of 20 OECD countries. Medicine NZ chief executive Graeme Jarvis says other countries have similar wealth ratings and size - so we can't blame being poor and small. "You want to give patients the access now, because if they wait too long, they become the ambulance at the bottom of the cliff and the rest of the health system, which is over-worked as it is, is having to deal with the patients in the interim." You've been telling yourself that moving faster will get you there sooner. It won't. In this episode, Jason breaks down the pattern of perpetual motion — the nonstop action, the scattered energy, the addiction to doing — and makes the case that rushing is actually the slowest path forward. Not as a concept. As something he lived, and finally broke through. He shares what happened in December when he stopped. The identity crisis that followed. The fears that surfaced when the motion stopped. And then — what his results looked like a month later. This one is about presence. About the shortcut you keep running past. About the subtle voice inside you that only speaks when you get quiet enough to hear it. If you've been in nonstop motion and wondering why you're not further along — this episode is for you.

n this episode of Business Brain, we dig into a truth many entrepreneurs miss: selling starts long before the transaction. We explore how personality is one of the most powerful sales tools we have—whether we're selling beer at a baseball game, handmade goods at a craft fair, or podcast ads. Humor, scarcity, and helpful tips all trigger the law of reciprocity, building trust and momentum before the ask even happens. When we lean into authentic connection, selling stops feeling pushy and starts feeling natural—another step toward building our Charmed Life. We also break down the danger of operating at the slowest common denominator inside a business. Just like a band can only move as fast as its least prepared member, companies stall when systems, partners, or team members lag behind. We talk through how to recognize these friction points and raise the standard so the entire organization can move faster, smarter, and more profitably. 00:00:00 Business Brain – The Entrepreneurs' Podcast #734 for Wednesday Casual FridAI, March 11, 2026 00:01:04 March 11th: World Plumbing Day 00:02:37 Always be learning about selling! Their model: Come up with an idea, achieve five or 10 million dollars in revenue themselves, then hand it off to a CEO who can take it to the next stage. They've used this playbook to build Moxie, a Series C company that helps nurses open their own medical spas, now with 600-plus customers and a 200-person team globally. Their second company, Meadow Memorials, is a contemporary funeral home with no physical real estate. It has become the largest provider of funeral services in California. Both businesses launched right around the arrival of ChatGPT—and neither was built with AI in mind. So how are they thinking about AI inside companies where the core work isn't going to change? Jeannie Zandi and I talk about what happens when awakening is no longer conceptual and has to become lived. We talk about how people give power away to teachers. We talk about the spiritual marketplace and how it can scramble your radar. We talk about deconstruction as something physical. We talk about fear leaving the body and the courage of not knowing and trusting in what is emerging now. What you will get from listening A deeper sense of calm and groundedness More trust in your body's yes and no Permission to stop pushing for answers Language for the strange body experiences that can happen during integration Reassurance that you are not crazy and not alone A clear felt example of slowing down to the pace of the heart We talk about Reclaiming self trust after giving power away Why "when in doubt, hang out" is real courage How the body purges fear and conditioned trauma Why some "spiritual" things feel off and your resonator knows Being drafted into service rather than chasing a role "Slow down for the slowest one" - the real you trying to come in Solstice invitations Jeannie Zandi Free guided meditation: Solstice Threshold December 21, 8am-9am MT Register here: https://mothership.jeanniezandi.org/c/public-events/mothership-meditation-12-21-25 Enjoy this soothing guided meditation to mark the passing of the longest night of the year. In this episode of Two Strike Noise, Jeff and Mark dig into one of the strangest success stories of the 1970s: Ross “Scuz” Grimsley, the pitcher who looked like he threw 100 mph and won by barely breaking 50. Before the deep dive, the show warms up with some classic Two Strike Noise chaos — including a bizarre Mariners stat involving pitchers named Erik, Andre Agassi's son pitching in international baseball, a Japanese pitcher debuting a J-pop–inspired glove, and a listener trivia question that quietly ruins everyone's confidence. The main event is Grimsley's improbable career arc. A first-round pick with the Reds, he wins early, gets traded anyway, and becomes the ultimate anti-establishment figure in a league obsessed with clean hair and harder fastballs. With long, greasy hair, turquoise contact lenses, witch-provided lucky stones, and a pitch mix built entirely on deception, Grimsley carved out wins while driving traditionalists insane. The episode wraps up with a lively game of Wax Pack Heroes, where Jeff and Mark open 2002 Topps baseball cards, aiming to accumulate the highest WAR scores while reminiscing about the players featured. 00:00 Introduction and Opening Banter 01:01 Baseball Trivia: Mariners and Erics 03:20 Jaden Agassi and Highlight Sports 05:14 Unique Baseball Gloves and J-Pop 07:52 Listener Trivia Question 10:22 Ross Grimsley's Unconventional Career 28:36 Wax Pack Heroes: Baseball Card Game 55:58 Wrapping Up and Final Thoughts YouTube - www.youtube.com/@twostrikenoise Twitch - https://www.twitch.tv/twostrikenoise Bluesky - @twostrikenoise.bsky.social Facebook -https://www.facebook.com/TwoStrikeNoise/ Instagram - @twostrikenoise E-mail - twostrikenoise@gmail.com We pull ALOT of commons in Wax Pack Heroes.
