David Mann has never had a grand plan. What he has had is a willingness to follow the thread - to say yes to the next opportunity, trust the learning, and keep moving. From auctioneer to NSW Police Officer and court Prosecutor, to commercial lawyer, to 24 years leading billion-dollar consulting operations for Accenture across the UK, Asia Pacific and the Middle East, to CEO of Workplace Giving Australia, to now leading Tour de Cure as its CEO - David's story is one of the most compelling examples of career reinvention and non-linear leadership you will find. In this conversation, he takes us behind the decisions, the discipline, and the quiet conviction that has shaped a life built on purpose, stewardship and trusting the process. KEY HIGHLIGHTS 1. The police force was his first leadership school Before any boardroom, David Mann spent six years as an NSW Police Officer and court Prosecutor. He credits that time with teaching him the fundamentals of human behaviour - how to read a room, how to negotiate without igniting a situation, and how to understand that people do not all think the same way. He describes the best police as those who can defuse rather than escalate - a philosophy he carried directly into his leadership approach at Accenture and beyond. It is not a background most senior executives share. And it shows in how he leads. 2. He has never had a grand plan - and that was the strategy David said it plainly in this conversation: he has never had a grand plan. What drove every career decision instead was a simple filter - will this keep me learning and growing? He described his father's question that still shapes how he thinks: what is the point of working 48 weeks of the year in something you do not enjoy, just for four weeks of holiday? For anyone navigating their own non-linear career path, that question is a compass. Career reinvention, David says, is not a crisis. It is a choice. 3. Stewardship is the leadership principle he returns to again and again After 24 years at Accenture, David left deliberately - not because he had to, but because it had become routine. He recognised that a leader who has stopped being energised is a disservice to the people around them. He described stewardship as making other people successful and then getting out of their way. It is the leadership principle he applied to leaving Accenture, and the one he now applies every day at Tour de Cure. In a world that celebrates holding on, David makes a quiet case for knowing when to let go. 4. Tour de Cure - from bikes to a national cancer research force David joined the Tour de Cure board in 2014 as a volunteer, and became CEO in October 2024. When he arrived, Tour de Cure was built around one thing: riding. Bike tours were the centrepiece and the identity. Today, riding represents only about 10% of what the organisation does. Over 20,000 of its 25,000 annual participants now come through runs, walks, swims and gala events - a deliberate diversification David helped drive from the board before stepping into the CEO seat. Tour de Cure has funded over 1,300 research projects, contributed to more than 250 world-class medical breakthroughs, and currently sponsors approximately 130 PhD students. David is clear: researchers will find cures for cancer. The only thing that will stop them is lack of funding. 5. Kindness has been a thread through everything When asked where kindness had shown up across his career, David Mann did not reach for a corporate example. He talked about his parents, his friends, and the people around him who were never just in it for themselves. He describes kindness not as a soft leadership idea but as a practical force - and it is part of why he joined My Acts of Kindness alongside his work at Tour de Cure. For David, leading with kindness and leading seriously are not in tension. They are the same thing. David Mann did not set out to build an impressive career. He set out to keep learning, keep growing, and be around people who were doing the same. The titles and the scale came as a by-product of that orientation - not the other way around. What this conversation leaves you with is something quieter and more useful than career advice: the reminder that the path does not have to be linear to be right, that stewardship matters more than status, and that career reinvention is not something that happens to you. It is something you choose. Finding the right storytelling angle can be challenge for any trial lawyer, but for those advocating on the right-hand side of the v, it's often even more so. In representing clients jurors may not automatically find sympathetic, defense counsel must express empathy for harms the plaintiff has suffered without admitting to their liability and present technical data that is critical to their client's defense but wearisome for fact finders to follow. Good narrative technique can help, and in this episode, legal storytelling specialist David Mann shares the insights he's gain in over a decade of working with trial lawyers to develop winning case stories. They're also seeing the nuclear verdict problem. So juries are awarding tens of millions and even hundreds of millions of dollars in cases that just a few years ago that would have been unheard of. And now it's getting to be more and more regular. So that that's how high the stakes are for the defense.” David MannResourcesDavid Mann (bio)Turning Facts into a Story (May, November)Persuasive Presence (October)Building Trial Skills: New Orleans (program)The Secrets of Persuasive Legal Storytelling (podcast episode)Engaging the Jury in the First Two Minutes (free webcast)NYT 10-Minute Challenge (gift article)

Episode: Big Truth Podcast — with Cary Brobeck (Owner/Editor-in-Chief, Choppers Magazine + Founder/Organizer, Chopper Fest) Core promise: A behind-the-scenes look at how chopper culture actually gets preserved and pushed forward—through print, shows, relationships, and a lot of unglamorous work. Cary Brobeck breaks down the real day-to-day reality of running an iconic print magazine in an internet era while still working a full-time construction/QC job, plus what it took to take over Chopper Fest and scale it to 10,000+ attendees. The conversation hits chopper culture's punk/DIY roots, the market's price swings, the importance of showing up in the industry, and a major mission: preserving David Mann artwork and artifacts via the David Mann Legacy Foundation. Key topics & highlights · Chopper Fest: how Cary took over a 20-year legacy event (originally tied to David Mann) and doubled attendance year-over-year. · The grind nobody sees: why "owning a magazine" doesn't mean you're not still clocking in at a day job. · Why choppers (not just motorcycles): the punk/skate/custom-culture pipeline—loud, dangerous, DIY, and personal. · Market talk: vintage bike pricing swings (knuckles, pans, shovels), and why things feel like they're "breathing" again. · Publishing origin story: Dice → early projects → working with Easy Riders / Wrench → the path to Choppers Magazine. · Choppers Magazine name revival: how "Choppers Mag" (Ed Roth era) became available—and why Cary got the Roth family blessing first. · Preserving motorcycle art: the plan to collect and protect David Mann originals + artifacts so they don't disappear into attics, estates, and trash piles. · Harley sponsorship reality: how Cary views working with a corporation while staying rooted in the culture—plus why relationships matter. · What's next: more shows, possible "town takeovers," and future special issues (including an all-women riders edition idea). Today we get to sit down to talk bikes & life with Cary Brobeck, the owner & editor of Choppers Magazine. Cary preserves the history and culture of vintage motorcycles through events, media, and magazines and is one helluva dude!ABOUT CHOPPERS MAGAZINEWebsite - https://choppersmagazine.com/Cary's Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/brobeck/Choppers Mag Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/choppersmagazine/Back in 1967 car and motorcycle customizer and father of Rat Fink, Ed “Big Daddy” Roth invented the first true custom bike magazine genre with Choppers magazine. It offered up crazy wild choppers and even the first David Mann paintings. Hell, no less a kustom kulture icon than Robert Williams worked on the magazine. The original Choppers ran until 1970 and Roth closed the doors, which opened the door to three upstarts who started publishing Easyriders magazine in 1971.Fast forward to 2018 when former editor of WRENCH magazine Cary Brobeck decided the world needed Choppers to come back. He was right. After getting the approval from one of Ed Roth's sons, (Ed died on April Fool's Day, 2001) including much struggling and many sleepless nights, Cary brought Choppers magazine back to life and included all his friends from Easyriders after that venerable bike rag gave up the ghost.Nowadays, Choppers magazine still brings you the best custom creations imaginable and is staffed by Cary, former BIKER art director Steve “Beatnik” Werner and hangarounds including former In The Wind editor Kim Peterson, long time photographer and editor of Tattoo magazine Billy Tinney and a ton of other bikers, photographers, and artist.Choppers magazine is an important part of custom motorcycle history. Movie of the Year: 1971DuelWhy Duel Still Defines Steven SpielbergIn this episode of Movie of the Year, Ryan, Greg, and Mike hit the highway with Duel, the 1971 television movie that announced the arrival of Steven Spielberg as a filmmaker to watch. Long before Jaws turned Spielberg into a household name, Duel showcased his instinctive command of suspense, visual storytelling, and cinematic geography.Though made for television, Duel feels relentlessly cinematic. The Taste Buds explore how Steven Spielberg transformed a simple premise—a man pursued by a truck—into a nerve-shredding examination of fear, pride, and survival, and why Duel remains one of the most influential thrillers of the 1970s.Steven Spielberg's Duel: The Blueprint for a Legendary CareerViewed today, Duel plays like a rough draft of Steven Spielberg's entire career. Even at this early stage, Spielberg demonstrates the techniques that would come to define his work:crystal-clear visual storytellingtension built through movement rather than dialogueempathy for ordinary protagonistsaction staged with escalating precisionRyan, Greg, and Mike break down how Duel anticipates Spielberg's later films, from Jaws to War of the Worlds, in which everyday people confront overwhelming, often mechanical forces. Duel is not just Spielberg's breakthrough—it's his mission statement.Duel, Masculinity, and the Fragile American MaleAt the center of the film is Dennis Weaver's David Mann, a character whose name underscores the film's obsession with masculinity. Spielberg presents masculinity not as strength, but as something brittle—constantly tested by humiliation, fear, and wounded pride. The Taste Buds analyze how Steven Spielberg uses the relentless chase to strip Mann of social niceties and self-image. Each confrontation with the truck becomes a confrontation with his own identity, forcing Mann to decide whether masculinity means dominance, endurance, or simply surviving long enough to escape. This uneasy portrait of masculinity would echo throughout Spielberg's career, particularly in his depictions of anxious men pushed to emotional and physical extremes.America as a Hostile Landscape in DuelFew films capture the anxiety lurking beneath the promise of America's open spaces as effectively as Duel. Spielberg transforms highways, diners, and gas stations into zones of menace, where authority is absent and help never arrives.Ryan, Greg, and Mike discuss how Steven Spielberg's vision of America in Duel reflects a growing cultural unease: freedom becomes isolation, mobility becomes vulnerability, and technology becomes an anonymous threat. The truck itself is never humanized—it's industrial, faceless, and unstoppable, embodying a uniquely American nightmare.Guest Spotlight: Eric Vespe (Formerly Quint) from The SpielThis episode features special guest Eric Vespe, a veteran film journalist and podcaster with decades of experience covering cinema and genre filmmaking. Eric is formally known to many longtime film fans as Quint, the byline he used during his...

A nameless truck, an everyday salesman, and 90 minutes of pure escalation: this episode is all about Steven Spielberg's debut feature, Duel (1971).We talk through how a simple setup – Dennis Weaver's mild-mannered David Mann driving to a routine meeting – turns into a relentless nightmare when he's targeted by a grimy tanker truck that seems less like a vehicle and more like a stalking predator. From suburban driveways to dusty California highways, we track every swerve, near–miss, and increasingly desperate decision as a casual overtake turns into a life-or-death duel on the road.Along the way we get into:Road rage and paranoia – why Mann feels like a “cuck vs truck” case study, and how the film weaponises every tiny driving irritation into something sinister. The truck as a character – the battered Peterbilt, its collection of license plates, its “face” in the grill and headlights, and the choice never to fully show the driver.Minimal cast, maximum tension – how Spielberg keeps it gripping with basically one man, one truck, a diner, a school bus and a handful of side characters.Set-pieces that still work – the diner sequence and “which guy is it?”, the stalled school bus, the railway crossing shove, the Snake-O-Rama phone box attack, and that final hillside showdown.Spielberg's emerging style – low-mounted cameras to fake speed, clever blocking, the way he maps the whole journey out on paper, and the stunts he only had one chance to get right.Production trivia – its origins as a TV movie, the brutal shooting schedule, why the truck doesn't explode, and how its death roar later turns up in other Spielberg classics. If you like tight, stripped-back thrillers, if you've ever shouted at another driver, or if you're curious to hear three dads pick apart early Spielberg craft as much as they laugh about it, this is a good place to jump into the podcast. You can now text us anonymously to leave feedback, suggest future content or simply hurl abuse at us. Today I'm delighted to be joined in conversation by Dr David Mann founder of HaikuBox a unique smart device that allows you to listen to and monitor the bird calls in your garden 24/7.Birdwatching offers a connection to the natural world that is accessible to all of us regardless of our backgrounds or our locations. Birding in urban areas is equally as rewarding as it is in more rural settings. I believe people protect what they love and understand and the HaikuBox is a wonderful tool to help us build a deeper relationship with the birds and acoustic landscape that surrounds us but is easily overlooked. Beyond being incredibly fun to learn who is sharing your home with you, the HaikuBox also gathers data that conservationists are able to use to both understand and conserve our avian friends. From the impacts of solar eclipses and wild fires to migration patterns the data you help collect is invaluable to learning more about our birds. David also shares some other fascinating uses for bioacoustics monitoring from Elephants in Africa and the signature whistles of Florida's Bottlenose dolphins that can identify individuals to the Indigenous communities in northwestern Canada employing HaikuBox technology to ensure Beluga Whales aren't trapped when winter ice blocks the waterways. David reminds us how easy it can be to make a difference in this world, by learning to appreciate and then simple encourage and nurture the native wild plants and wildlife that share our homes, we can make an incredible impact.Learn more about DavidHaikubox's founder, David Mann, grew up in Syracuse, NY and spent a lot of time outdoors, no matter the weather. David was fascinated by birds and watched them at home and at nearby Sapsucker Woods on the Cornell University campus. David went on to study biology at Cornell and earned a PhD in biological oceanography from MIT and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, where his research focused on animal bioacoustics. Haikubox was hatched when David and a colleague at the K. Lisa Yang Center for Conservation Bioacoustics at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology realized they shared a common interest and the technical skills to develop an automatic birdsong identification tool. HaikuBox:Haikubox brings consumers real-time bird alerts, birdsong recordings and loads of information about their backyard birds. Using its proprietary neural net trained on thousands of bird recordings, Haikubox listens 24/7 for every bird song and chirp and shares what it learns via the Haikubox Listen website and mobile app. Includes phone and smartwatch bird alerts, the ability to favorite, download and share birdsong recordings, and learning to identify hidden species by their vocalizations. Every Haikubox owner becomes a community scientist within the Haikubox network, contributing invaluable data for scientific research.Website: www.haikubox.comInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/haikubox/BlueSky: https://bsky.app/profile/haikubox.bsky.socialSupport the showThank you for being part of this journey with me, please Subscribe so you don't miss our future episodes, leave a review & share with friends to help these messages ripple out across the world.
