Movie of the Year: 1971DuelWhy Duel Still Defines Steven SpielbergIn this episode of Movie of the Year, Ryan, Greg, and Mike hit the highway with Duel, the 1971 television movie that announced the arrival of Steven Spielberg as a filmmaker to watch. Long before Jaws turned Spielberg into a household name, Duel showcased his instinctive command of suspense, visual storytelling, and cinematic geography.Though made for television, Duel feels relentlessly cinematic. The Taste Buds explore how Steven Spielberg transformed a simple premise—a man pursued by a truck—into a nerve-shredding examination of fear, pride, and survival, and why Duel remains one of the most influential thrillers of the 1970s.Steven Spielberg's Duel: The Blueprint for a Legendary CareerViewed today, Duel plays like a rough draft of Steven Spielberg's entire career. Even at this early stage, Spielberg demonstrates the techniques that would come to define his work:crystal-clear visual storytellingtension built through movement rather than dialogueempathy for ordinary protagonistsaction staged with escalating precisionRyan, Greg, and Mike break down how Duel anticipates Spielberg's later films, from Jaws to War of the Worlds, in which everyday people confront overwhelming, often mechanical forces. Duel is not just Spielberg's breakthrough—it's his mission statement.Duel, Masculinity, and the Fragile American MaleAt the center of the film is Dennis Weaver's David Mann, a character whose name underscores the film's obsession with masculinity. Spielberg presents masculinity not as strength, but as something brittle—constantly tested by humiliation, fear, and wounded pride. The Taste Buds analyze how Steven Spielberg uses the relentless chase to strip Mann of social niceties and self-image. Each confrontation with the truck becomes a confrontation with his own identity, forcing Mann to decide whether masculinity means dominance, endurance, or simply surviving long enough to escape. This uneasy portrait of masculinity would echo throughout Spielberg's career, particularly in his depictions of anxious men pushed to emotional and physical extremes.America as a Hostile Landscape in DuelFew films capture the anxiety lurking beneath the promise of America's open spaces as effectively as Duel. Spielberg transforms highways, diners, and gas stations into zones of menace, where authority is absent and help never arrives.Ryan, Greg, and Mike discuss how Steven Spielberg's vision of America in Duel reflects a growing cultural unease: freedom becomes isolation, mobility becomes vulnerability, and technology becomes an anonymous threat. The truck itself is never humanized—it's industrial, faceless, and unstoppable, embodying a uniquely American nightmare.Guest Spotlight: Eric Vespe (Formerly Quint) from The SpielThis episode features special guest Eric Vespe, a veteran film journalist and podcaster with decades of experience covering cinema and genre filmmaking. Eric is formally known to many longtime film fans as Quint, the byline he used during his...

A nameless truck, an everyday salesman, and 90 minutes of pure escalation: this episode is all about Steven Spielberg's debut feature, Duel (1971).We talk through how a simple setup – Dennis Weaver's mild-mannered David Mann driving to a routine meeting – turns into a relentless nightmare when he's targeted by a grimy tanker truck that seems less like a vehicle and more like a stalking predator. From suburban driveways to dusty California highways, we track every swerve, near–miss, and increasingly desperate decision as a casual overtake turns into a life-or-death duel on the road.Along the way we get into:Road rage and paranoia – why Mann feels like a “cuck vs truck” case study, and how the film weaponises every tiny driving irritation into something sinister. The truck as a character – the battered Peterbilt, its collection of license plates, its “face” in the grill and headlights, and the choice never to fully show the driver.Minimal cast, maximum tension – how Spielberg keeps it gripping with basically one man, one truck, a diner, a school bus and a handful of side characters.Set-pieces that still work – the diner sequence and “which guy is it?”, the stalled school bus, the railway crossing shove, the Snake-O-Rama phone box attack, and that final hillside showdown.Spielberg's emerging style – low-mounted cameras to fake speed, clever blocking, the way he maps the whole journey out on paper, and the stunts he only had one chance to get right.Production trivia – its origins as a TV movie, the brutal shooting schedule, why the truck doesn't explode, and how its death roar later turns up in other Spielberg classics. If you like tight, stripped-back thrillers, if you've ever shouted at another driver, or if you're curious to hear three dads pick apart early Spielberg craft as much as they laugh about it, this is a good place to jump into the podcast. You can now text us anonymously to leave feedback, suggest future content or simply hurl abuse at us. Today I'm delighted to be joined in conversation by Dr David Mann founder of HaikuBox a unique smart device that allows you to listen to and monitor the bird calls in your garden 24/7.Birdwatching offers a connection to the natural world that is accessible to all of us regardless of our backgrounds or our locations. Birding in urban areas is equally as rewarding as it is in more rural settings. I believe people protect what they love and understand and the HaikuBox is a wonderful tool to help us build a deeper relationship with the birds and acoustic landscape that surrounds us but is easily overlooked. Beyond being incredibly fun to learn who is sharing your home with you, the HaikuBox also gathers data that conservationists are able to use to both understand and conserve our avian friends. From the impacts of solar eclipses and wild fires to migration patterns the data you help collect is invaluable to learning more about our birds. David also shares some other fascinating uses for bioacoustics monitoring from Elephants in Africa and the signature whistles of Florida's Bottlenose dolphins that can identify individuals to the Indigenous communities in northwestern Canada employing HaikuBox technology to ensure Beluga Whales aren't trapped when winter ice blocks the waterways. David reminds us how easy it can be to make a difference in this world, by learning to appreciate and then simple encourage and nurture the native wild plants and wildlife that share our homes, we can make an incredible impact.Learn more about DavidHaikubox's founder, David Mann, grew up in Syracuse, NY and spent a lot of time outdoors, no matter the weather. David was fascinated by birds and watched them at home and at nearby Sapsucker Woods on the Cornell University campus. David went on to study biology at Cornell and earned a PhD in biological oceanography from MIT and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, where his research focused on animal bioacoustics. Haikubox was hatched when David and a colleague at the K. Lisa Yang Center for Conservation Bioacoustics at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology realized they shared a common interest and the technical skills to develop an automatic birdsong identification tool. HaikuBox:Haikubox brings consumers real-time bird alerts, birdsong recordings and loads of information about their backyard birds. Using its proprietary neural net trained on thousands of bird recordings, Haikubox listens 24/7 for every bird song and chirp and shares what it learns via the Haikubox Listen website and mobile app. Includes phone and smartwatch bird alerts, the ability to favorite, download and share birdsong recordings, and learning to identify hidden species by their vocalizations. Guitarist Dee Brown created a jazzy album of R&B instrumentals on which he adopted the persona of a fictious character called “Mister Smooth,” who is confident, focused, and anchored in equanimity. Writing eight new songs, most of them with his GRAMMY® nominated producer and longtime collaborator Valdez Brantley (Usher, Mary J. Blige, Keith Sweat, Lil Wayne), Brown's sixth album will be released by Innervision Records on March 28. The melody-rich title track will be issued as a single the same day. Stepping into the “Mister Smooth” character like a method actor while writing and recording the album wasn't much of a stretch for Brown, who is a devout man of faith. The confidence and maturity that he exudes on the recording and is on full display via his guitar work and the compositions he crafted for the set are bolden and empowering. It's a determined mindset purposed with overcoming challenges and adversity while remaining in control - even when the world feels chaotic. “Mister Smooth embodies a person who is consistently on top of things and maintains control in any situation. Even when faced with uncertainty, he excels at ‘faking it until he makes it,' elevating the experience for everyone involved. I created an album that captures the essence of what it means to be a Mister Smooth. This concept isn't just a reflection of who I am or aspire to be; it represents a powerful attribute that enhances any situation. The name itself resonates with many, making it relatable and appealing. This is perfectly aligned with the type of music we produce and the kind of person with whom we all aspire to be,” said Brown who released multiple singles from the project while he was working on the collection over the last couple of years. After opening the album with “Mister Smooth,” the Detroit- born and based artist offers a taste of his hometown on “Wes 8Mile,” which he wrote with multi-time Billboard No. 1 chart-topper Blake Aaron who produced the song that was issued as a single. Mike Parlett's saxophone perfectly complements Brown's cool toned electric jazz guitar riffs that invoke jazz guitar legend Wes Montgomery. “Eight Mile is one of the main streets running through Detroit, and I grew up on the west side of Detroit. The name ‘Wes 8Mile' comes from my guitar hero Wes Montgomery's unique style of playing, which often involved using octaves. An octave is a note that is eight diatonic notes away from the first note, and he would play these two notes together. My goal was to create an up-tempo groove that incorporated both octaves and single note playing, along with a half-step modulation. I also wanted to incorporate an ensemble, which is why I invited saxophonist Mike Parlett to play on the track with Carnell Harrell (keyboards), Mel Brown (bass), and Tony Moore (drums),” explains Brown. Another collaboration with Aaron resulted in “The Thing Is…” which adds horn player and arranger David Mann, keyboardist Tateng Katindig, and Aaron's rhythm guitar to the ensemble. It was the second single from the album and hit all the major charts. “Many times, when a conversation is going and someone wants to make a valid point, they will say, 'The thing is...' That is what this song is all about, making a musical valid point that will grab your attention and immediately be noticed," stated Brown. Brown and Brantley interpret Sister Sledge's rousing anthem “We Are Family,” which includes an imaginative jazz breakdown midway through the disco dancefloor filler. “My wife suggested that we remake ‘We Are Family' and I imSupport the showMusic Artist interview

We love our automobiles here in America. We love driving cars and fixing up cars… but not every experience on the open road is a good one. This week I'm recommending four road trip films that turn out to be bad trips. Duel (1971)David Mann is just trying to make his way through a lone desert highway when he begins being tormented by an 18-wheeler for no apparent reason. Despite Mann's attempts to outrun, outmaneuver, and outsmart his pursuer, he is unable to get away. If Duel sounds a little like Jaws but with cars, that's no coincidence as Duel was the directorial debut of Steven Spielberg. Non-stop tension from beginning to the exciting climax.Motorama (1991)Ten-year-old Gus hits the road after stealing his parents' Mustang with hopes of winning Motorama. Collect all eight winning cards for a chance of winning $500 million dollars! Unfortunately for Gus, things aren't easy in this hellish nightmare wasteland. By the time Gus makes it to the Motorama headquarters he's lost an eye and his hair has turned gray… and things are about to get worse.Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry (1974)Driver Larry and his mechanic Deke plan to fund their new racing team by robbing a local supermarket and laying low until the heat blows over — an escape plan that falls apart when Larry's former one-night stand Mary is hiding in the getaway car. The film turns into a long police chase and getting there is half the fun! Starring Peter Fonda and Vic Morrow.Palmer's Pick-up (1999)Palmer and Pearl, owners of a cargo shipping company, are hired to transport a large crate from California to Florida. The crate must be delivered to the Devil's Triangle prior to the stroke of midnight on Y2K, else something bad will happen. What the two don't know is if they do make it on time, something much worse may happen. Starring Robert Carradine, Morton Downey, Jr., a dozen unexpected cameos, and one of the highest death counts in any movie I've ever seen. What an ending! This is a public episode. “My wife suggested that we remake ‘We Are Family' and I immediately thought of Nile Rodgers, the incredible guitarist from the legendary group Chic. I've always admired his rhythm guitar work,” Brown admitted. Brown sees his Mister Smooth character as someone who would be charming, which inspired the song titled “Charming.” “This track was developed after I decided we needed to record a slower song. I wanted to incorporate 808 electric drums, Moog synth/bass, and a variety of synthesized sounds reminiscent of the 1990s with a strong emphasis on guitar,” said Brown. “Finesse” was the first track recorded for the album, yet the song had to go through a process of evolution. Brown explains, “I noticed a problem with the song's chorus. I decided to try an alternative melody, and it seems to work perfectly. So, when you hear the track, if you listen to the lead melody on the big body guitar, that's the new melody and if you listen in the background, there's another melody that is played with my Stratocaster-style guitar that is more like a picking style playing the original melody. They work together perfectly.” The album's first single was “You Already Know,” which was released as a deep cut during the recording process to keep Brown on radio playlists. His gregarious guitar is slick and proficient as it deftly maneuvers to the fore of a midtempo electric groove. The vibrant “Charismatic” gets a boost from Merlon Devine's soprano sax. Brown explains, “Initially, Valdez (Brantley) played the flute sound on the track on his keyboard, but I felt we needed a live flute player. Unfortunately, all the flautists we knew were unavailable. I suggested using a soprano saxophone instead and called my good friend, Merlon Devine. We decided to keep the keyboard flute sound after all, but it's Merlon's beautiful soprano sax that really stands out on this track.” We experience a completely different side of Brown on “4th Dimension,” on which he indulges his rock god guitar alter ego. “I was kind of a rock ‘n' roller influenced by great bands from the '80s and '90s. I've always loved legendary guitarists like Jeff Beck, Carlos Santana, Jimi Hendrix, and Jimmy Page, and I wanted to create a rocky, funky groove. We started exploring a direction that I don't usually take. Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/ladydiva-live-radio--2579466/support.

David Mann, PhD invented the Haikubox with his colleagues at Loggerhead Instruments in order to learn more about animal behavior. The way they do this is by collecting bioacoustics, or the sounds produced by living organisms. This information has given researchers a better understanding of the species in an area, and their movements within the ecosystem.Epic Gardening Shop Homepage: https://growepic.co/4dzHfwSBotanical Interests Shop Homepage: https://growepic.co/4dKxFasBook Collection Page: https://growepic.co/3Z0DtZfEG Homesteading Book: https://growepic.co/4cA3SAcLearn More: 25 Top Plants to Attract Birds to Your YardConnect With David Mann, PhD:David Mann, PhD earned his doctorate from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution by studying domino damselfish sounds at a Pacific atoll, and he was a faculty member at the University of South Florida.
