The comment highlights broader skepticism and questions surrounding the partnership.Honda has a solid hybrid lineup but struggles with EV development after parting ways with GM. Meanwhile, Nissan faces financial instability and a declining EV market share despite its history as an early leader with the Leaf.Nissan's robust manufacturing network and supply chain might align with Honda's hybrid expertise. Shake Shack's food speaks for itself, but marketing can help reinforce the qualities that make it special like brisket in the burgers and shakes made with custard, CEO Rob Lynch tells Bloomberg Intelligence. In this episode of the Choppin' It Up podcast, Lynch sits down with BI's senior restaurant and foodservice analyst Michael Halen to discuss how changes to the company's marketing program -- including plans to highlight its premium ingredients, create a strategic calendar for limited-time offers and increase spending -- can boost customer frequency. He also comments on kitchen and operational improvements and his vision for Shake Shack's loyalty program. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Many of the recent hires for restaurant CEO positions share a common listing on their resumes: Somewhere along the way, they logged time at Yum Brands, parent of Taco Bell, Pizza Hut, KFC and The Habit. For reasons that go beyond the sheer size of the franchisor, it's become a major prep school of sorts for a new generation of chain chiefs, from Brian Niccol at Starbucks to Rob Lynch at Shake Shack. The situation calls to mind a time when it seemed almost like a requirement for casual-dining CEOs to have worked under Norman Brinker at the parent of Steak and Ale or Chili's (now led by a Yum alumnus, Kevin Hochman). The graduates of those real-world training centers eventually found themselves in demand to lead chains in every sector of the business, from family dining (Mike Jenkins at Bakers Square and Village Inn) to eatertainment (Dick Frank at Chuck E. Cheese). This week's episode of Restaurant Rewind looks at the unique role those companies played in shaping the industry's leadership ranks, as well as why Yum is filling a similar role today. Papa Johns International, Inc. has been in the midst of a long development runway for several years now, as the Louisville, Ky.-based pizza chain catches up and tries to surpass its pre-2020 store portfolio levels. This year, Papa Johns reached the same number of stores it had before the pandemic, so now the company is at ground zero on its journey toward one day becoming the third-largest pizza chain in the U.S., Patrick Coelho, senior vice president of development for Papa Johns, said. Although last year, store openings were fairly modest, with only 15 net new stores opened in 2022, according to the NRN 2023 Top 500 in partnership with Datassential, Papa Johns has signed multiple large development deals over the past couple of years, and in 2022, CEO Rob Lynch said that the company has plans to open 2,000 stores by 2025. The plan is to utilize new store designs, as well as nontraditional locations, to get the company back on track to the same pace of growth it has in the ‘90s.

The tech stock darlings of the pandemic have finally hit a pullback. For the first time in five years, the Dow is outperforming the Nasdaq. The Fed's signals for rate hikes on the horizon has prompted a reversal for high-growth cloud stocks, which could spell trouble for portfolios of tech bulls like Cathie Wood. Omicron is weighing on the markets and a group of former advisers to President Biden, who urge, “We need to do better.” Former FDA Commissioner Dr. Scott Gottlieb discusses test and vaccine distribution in the U.S., variants popping up all over the world, and the realistic longevity of this new normal. Supply chain issues are also hitting the pizza world; Papa John's CEO Rob Lynch says, despite staffing, inflation, and supply chain issues, he's kept his teams tossing pies every day of the pandemic. This week, Stephanie Dueñas and Russell Shoemaker tread through the fascinating history behind the sculpture work “Silver Bedhead” from 1946 by Alexander “Sandy'“ Calder, mobile master, commissioned by Peggy Guggenheim, a woman whose art addiction influenced Modern Art History of the last century. They go back to the beginning of Peggy and Sandy’s lives when each experienced serendipitous moments that changed the trajectory of their lives, their paths running parallel to one another until art brought them together resulting in the one-of-a-kind work discussed in today’s episode. Topics include secret bookstores, a hefty inheritance, a miniature circus, baguette bopping, and Stephanie’s encounter with a too mobile mobile. In this week’s episode, Stephanie Dueñas and Russell Shoemaker immerse themselves in the sensory watercolor world of the prolific artist and writer Charles Burchfield: from his early psychedelic Golden phase, through his Regionalist period, and finally, the works he made toward the end of his life after revisiting those Golden Phase paintings. They explore what exactly drove the vibrant works that bookended his career spanning several decades. You can find all the images we discuss on our website at https://www.artslicepod.com/ or our instagram page at https://www.instagram.com/artslicepod/ Charles was just a small town boy, born and raised in Ohio. He was known as a lunch pale artist, clocking in Monday through Friday and spending time with his family and dogs on nights and weekends. While his paintings sold enough to support his family, even during the Great Depression, something was unresolved in his artistic career . . . something that had been unresolved before he became the beloved Regionalist. Toward the end of his career, his splice-of-life watercolors transcended into multi-sensory and psychedelic landscapes vibrating with the songs of crickets and the buzzing of telephone wires. Stephanie and Russell find out that the answer to "Was this Mr. Rodger’s - type figure popping LSD in the woods? Or was he so deeply connected to the nature all around him?" There's a lot of positive spin being put on the news that Papa John's International Inc. is opening a new global headquarters in Atlanta, instead of Louisville. And hey look, we realize the chamber of commerce and the mayor's office can't publicly scorn the company for this decision. They have to be diplomatic and congratulate Papa John's on their success and potential growth. But we don't have to be diplomatic. We're just going to come right out and say that this is the latest (and largest) company to decide that there's greener pastures out there than Louisville if you're looking to grow globally. It's a troubling trend we talk about on this week's Access Louisville podcast. Apellis Pharmaceuticals is another recent departure as our list of public companies continues to shrink in recent years.
