Presented by Black Humboldt and The Eureka Chapter of The NAACP, our Juneteenth celebration is an all day, community wide, event celebrating freedom, diversity and community. The event features local Black & Brown, venders, workshop facilitators, music, performances and informational Knowledge for Power sessions. Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States, celebrating that day in history, June 19th 1865. This holiday is very important and empowering for the Black communities all over the united states, but especially for Humboldt County, as this community makes up a very small percentage of the population and is often oppressed as a result. Black history is a part of The United States' history and is important to celebrate as we create safe spaces and inclusion for the Black community in Humboldt County.

Join the Hub has they talk visual arts, representation and Egypt with Sabina Gallier mastermind of PIzza Moon Prints! *** Hello, my name is Sabina! I'm a Black artist and a transplant to Humboldt County as of 2011. By day I run a local radio station but by every other free moment I have, I like to create. I work mostly in digital art but I am also working on illustrations. These two areas differ greatly in style, method and meaning but I learned a while ago that exploring different types of expression is good for an artist, regardless of what my 5th grade art teacher had to say. My illustrations come from a place of wanting more Black representation in art. I loved comics and magazines when I was younger and as a child you notice when you don't see folks like you. There weren't more than two black characters in a comic panel at a time if any throughout an entire storyline. It was frustrating and disheartening. I'm currently trying to strengthen my hand at drawing and materializing the characters I desperately wanted to see as a child. Every day brings a new lesson and that's the most exciting part. My fully digital art deals more with objects and comes from a place of self-preservation. I always created and drew worlds and landscapes as a method of escaping and coping with childhood trauma. My digital art takes on the form of new planets, floating giants in the sky or creatures for me to discover in the colours and noise. I used to be nervous about sharing a lot of my work because I've attached it to my vulnerability and growth, the things that are sensitive to share with others. However, in creating a seperate space for it in the digital world, I've received a lot of support from Humboldt and beyond. It's funny to call it a brand as I've yet to launch a store (*cough* online store coming soon shameless plug *cough*) but my "brand" aka my world is called Pizza Moon Prints. Inspired by a brief moment in my childhood where the idea of the moon being made of cheese was whack if it didn't have toppings. I need my toppings, I need my variety. I need to see something different each day. If, like me, you have a mind that just won't sit still, art can be a lifesaver. Art has been my lifesaver and whatever your medium may be, be it paint, music, words, glass etc. create a world that brings you joy, comfort and even a little discomfort. It's worth it. Aurora talks the art of weaving w/ The BH Hub! "Atlanta native and Northern California resident, Joanna Harris (Aurora), began weaving macrame jewelry in 2009 while backpacking across Central and South America. Her fiber art is greatly influenced by her time spent in the Amazons of Colombia and Ecuador, particularly along the banks of the Amazon river, and this force can be felt in the fluidity and earthiness of her artwork. There was no one individual who taught her this elaborate art of fiber art, and her work is a reflection of all the beautiful souls that she has met, and who have shared with her their gifts along the way. In the winter of 2019, Aurora expanded her repertoire and began making macrame home decor. The following Summer in 2020, she gave birth to her son, Raiden Phoenix, and simultaneously the macrame brand “String and Hearts” was also born. Her craft is a labor of love, intention, and devotion to harnessing chi. Her mission is to cultivate beauty and a sense of peace through all the avenues of creative expression. Aurora enjoys dancing, cooking, working from home, traveling, live music, deep conversations, and nurturing people physically, spiritually, and mentally in her spare time. “I’ve come to share my gifts with the world, to inspire people, and to be a source of light to those who would seek it. My art is a reflection of the ineffable beauty which I constantly see and feel around me, and I am blessed to be a medium through which all this energy can flow.” - Aurora Amina. The Hub meets up with Reggae & Dancehall singer & Rapper Lacy Redhead! Lacy Redhead is a reggae and dance hall singer-songwriter, writing her first song at the age of 8, performing it in the living room for her family. Even as a young child, Lacy was listening to the greats, like Marvin Gaye, Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, and Aretha Franklin. As she grew older, Lacy became more determined than ever to find her way in the music industry. In 2013, Lacy attended an event called "Reggae On The River" where she caught her first break. Lacy was invited on stage and with her powerful voice and soul, she captivated the hearts of over 3000 people. Amongst them were Jubal Sherman, owner of the SHC record label, and producers Galen Davis and Justin Miller. With an album opportunity on the table, Lacy released her first record with SHC, titled "Soul Cherry." The quality of her debut album led to Lacy landing on the roster for "Reggae On The River 2014," and opening up for Tarrus Riley. Lacy is driven towards the future, always writing and doing what she can to forward her career and her spirituality. Motherhood and the pure joy of music are what drive her, wanting to bring positive vibes, laughter, and good times by sharing her story with the world. •Founder of The Black Sisterhood Link theblacksisterhoodlink@yahoo.com •I love nature, I’m vegan I’m obsessed with natural hair.
