Wisconsin state Assembly Rep. Steve Doyle in studio discussing whether the state might get that $2 billion in budget surplus back to taxpayers before the election. We also discussed a data center moratorium, his opponent in November, one governor candidate being $30,000 in credit card debt and an update on rebuilding the Tank Creek Bridge. Earlier in the day, a news release went out from Keith Purnell, who will be Doyle’s Republican opponent in the 94th Assembly District. We got Doyle’s early take on Purnell and whether there might be a debate. In regards to the Tank Creek Bridget that sits along the Great River State Trail, and was burned by an arsonist last year, Doyle discussed when construction might happen and a potential grant coming from the federal government to cover what might be a couple million in cost. Two stories about the governor’s race involved Francesca Hong over the past few days. One, that Capital One is suing her for $30,000 in credit card debt, presumably from her restaurant going out of business during COVID. The other was from a Democratic governor candidate forum where Hong was the only member to support a one-year moratorium on data centers. Doyle also updated us on the La Crosse County Board creating a data center committee, which he will be a part of, and whether he’s heard from anyone that’s pro data center. Lastly, sticking with that topic, we talked quickly about recent comments from the Dairyland Power CEO saying data centers are a “path to prosperity” in small communities.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Will Purnell is back on the podcast today, and a lot has happened since we last talked. If you don't know Will, he's a Seattle Prep alum who just wrapped up four years of collegiate running at Boston College. This fall, he's heading into his fifth and final year at Duke to close out his NCAA career. When we last caught up in spring 2024, Will was just starting to bounce back from a season-ending injury the previous fall. He managed to run 14:25 for 5K outdoors. Solid, but he knew there was more in the tank.Fast forward to now, and Will's been on an absolute tear.He and teammate Theodor Schucht became the first athletes in BC Track & Field history (men's or women's) to break 14 minutes in the 5,000m. Theodor ran 13:46.71 for the school record, and Will followed with 13:53.08, now #2 all-time. He also ran 28:48 for 10K at Raleigh Relays. Quietly, one of the best distance seasons in program history. But the numbers only tell part of the story. In this episode, Will and I dig into what it actually took to get there—mentally, physically, and emotionally. We talk about the setbacks that forced him to grow, how he rethought his approach to training, and what he learned about patience, consistency, and trusting the process. We also get into the nuts and bolts of modern training, like the double threshold system and altitude training, and how it's helped him get to the next level. If you're chasing your own breakthrough, coming back from injury, or just looking to train with more purpose, there's a lot to take away from this conversation.I promise that you will find value from this episode. If you're enjoying the show, consider hitting follow and leaving a five-star review on Apple Podcasts or Spotify! Inside nearly every fly fisher is a budding writer, eager to share their passion with the world. I've done podcasts on how to write better fly-fishing stories in the past, and figured it was time to talk to an editor and publisher about how you can get your masterpiece published. Ross Purnell [32:15], editor and publisher of Fly Fisherman magazine, was happy to share his advice on this subject—and no one in the fly-fishing world has more experience in this topic than Ross.   In the Fly Box this week, we have some great tips from listeners, some questions that I've answered before, and some fresh ones that I haven't, including: How do I deal with leaders that get knotted up when I am ready to use them? When you have fished a section of water, how long do you stay there, switching flies and techniques? Or do you move on? From a listener, a great fly and technique for catching yellow perch.  A listener relays his approach for minimalist equipment when fishing close to home. What is your opinion using balsa wood for fly tying? My casting with a dry fly is OK, but I struggle with dry dropper and streamer rigs.  What can I do? Do trout get "lost" after being landed in another part of a river? A listener adds some corrections to the proposed selling off of public lands. When fishing a double nymph rig, do you put the bigger fly above or below a smaller fly? How do I keep my dropper from slipping off my barbless dry fly?  I don't like using separate droppers on the leader. If I mess up and tie a dry fly with oversized hackle and wings, will it matter? How many flies of a given pattern will you tie? What is the minimum number? Is there an easy way to get beads on a size 18 hook?

Ross Purnell is the Editor of Fly Fisherman magazine, a position he has held since 2009. His journey into fly fishing began at age 16 when his mother gifted him a subscription to the magazine, inspiring a passion that would shape his career. In 1996, he joined Fly Fisherman under the mentorship of then-Editor John Randolph. Beyond his editorial role, Ross is an avid fly angler who has traveled the world with a fly rod in hand. He resides in Palmyra, Pennsylvania, and continues to contribute significantly to the fly fishing community. In this episode of Anchored, we discuss how he followed his passion right into his dream career, and we get the inside scoop behind the magazine. If you listen to this show, you know I'm here to discuss the culture, community, and craft of fly fishing. I'm not all that interested in talking about clothes. What you do on the water matters a whole lot more than what you wear. That said, I have been wearing a lot of Skwala apparel recently, and I'm thrilled to be working with them. I've worn just about everything out there, and Skwala makes the most thoughtful, innovative, and effective fly fishing gear I've ever experienced. And now Ella is starring and producing, ‘Sweetpea' on Sky and the streaming service, NOW in the UK and Starz in the USA!  ‘Sweetpea' is one of my favourite shows of the year and it follows Ella's character Rhiannon, a wallflower who is pushed over the edge and goes on a killing spree. She's been acting since she was a child (and is still absurdly young tbf) and bears the notable distinction of having played the younger versions of Keira Knightly, Margot Robbie and Angeline Jolie on-screen. October 1985: hair was big, riffs were bigger, and rock was veering toward an electrified blend of glam, grit, and decadence. Metalheads and rock fans everywhere were tuning in to MTV, where every week, a new video was promised to capture their attention. This era was when albums weren't just records; they were statements dripping with attitude and energy. Bands like Quiet Riot, Ratt, and Mötley Crüe were heating the charts, and fans were hungry for high-energy anthems to keep the adrenaline pumping. Into this scene dropped Midnite Dynamite, the third album from Maryland rockers KIX, an underdog act grinding it out in clubs with a mix of hard rock bravado and glam-metal flash. For KIX, this was a make-or-break moment, a chance to pull up from the underground and make their mark with a record that didn't just play to the rock crowd but demanded attention.Building to a Big BreakKIX had been around since the early 80s, putting out two albums and gaining a reputation for their high-energy performances and raw sound. They were a staple on the Maryland rock circuit, where fans recognized their signature mix of tight musicianship, outrageous on-stage antics, and the ability to turn a live show into a real experience. Despite the grind, KIX hadn't yet found a breakout record that would push them to national attention. That's where Midnite Dynamite comes in—this album was set to be a game-changer, and the band knew it had to deliver.Enter Bob Halligan Jr.: The Songwriter Who Got KixWhen it came time to make Midnite Dynamite, KIX partnered with songwriter Bob Halligan Jr., a musician with a gift for digging into a band's core and translating it into unforgettable tracks. Halligan's resume included writing credits with Judas Priest, so he knew a thing or two about blending melody with the heaviness that KIX needed to reach new fans. Initially, Halligan admitted he thought they'd meant KISS when he heard the name “KIX.” But once he met the band, the creative spark was instant, especially with bassist and primary songwriter Donnie Purnell. The Dynamic Duo: Halligan and PurnellDonnie Purnell was the force behind KIX's sound, with a drive to keep each song fresh and meaningful. Together, Purnell and Halligan struck a balance, crafting lyrics and riffs that stood out from the era's typical glam-rock fare. Halligan brought in elements that polished KIX's raw power without taking away the band's edge. With a focus on memorable choruses and punchy lyrics, their collaborative magic helped produce songs that would resonate long after the first listen. For Halligan and Purnell, Midnite Dynamite wasn't about writing cliché rock songs—it was about giving the audience something they hadn't heard before. Tracks like “Walking Away” became anthems for teens going through the highs and lows of young love, while “Sex” offered a tongue-in-cheek take on rock's fascination with romance. Instead of glamorizing indulgence, KIX's songs had humor and perspective that elevated them above the typical fare of the day.One of the things that makes Midnite Dynamite stand out is its dynamic range. The album plays with tempo and mood, jumping from high-energy riffs to introspective moments, keeping listeners on their toes. Lead singer Steve Whiteman's vocals add to this dynamic, often hitting octaves higher than the songs were initially written for, adding an electrifying edge to each track. Halligan also brought a production approach similar to Def Leppard, using digital drums to layer the sound and make the album feel slick without losing its rawness. The Legacy of Midnight Dynamite: An Underdog ClassicNearly 40 years after its release, Midnite Dynamite remains a cult classic, especially for fans who were there in the golden era of 80s rock. It's an album that captures everything we love about the era—huge riffs, clever lyrics, and a commitment to pushing the boundaries of rock without losing its soul. For KIX, this album marked a turning point and solidified their place in rock history. If you're feeling nostalgic or want to experience the thrill of 80s hard rock, give Midnite Dynamite a spin. Whether you're an old fan or discovering KIX for the first time, this record captures the rebellious, energetic spirit of an era that rocked music to its core.Songs in this Episode* Intro - Midnite Dynamite * 24:36 - Cold Shower * 34:44 - Here She Comes Again (Night Ranger) * 46:11 - Don't Close Your Eyes * 52:20 - Walkin Away * 1:09:11 - Scarlet Fever * Outro - Bang Bang (Balls of Fire)Make Your Metal Voice Heard! In our quest to explore the depths of 80s metal, we rely on you, our listeners. What do Isaiah and Instagram have in common? This week we're bringing you a conversation about a prophecy Isaiah gave about our times, on a subject that has hit home for many a woman over the last two months: the role of women in the Church. A large survey recently released showed a societal shift with regard to women leaving religion at significantly higher rates than men. Did Isaiah prophesy of this happening? We address the pains that women are feeling inside religion. We unpack the roadmap Isaiah laid out to help us change the system that is no longer serving our spirituality as women. Following this road map will fulfill an even greater prophecy; a gathering of women in their spiritual power that will bring joy to all humanity. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/inherimage/support

I've been lucky enough to welcome many Yellowjackets cast members to the show, including Christina Ricci and Jasmin Savoy Brown, but there's a certain someone who I was extremely disappointed to have missed out on while she was on the show — Ella Purnell. However, the time has finally come. Not only did I get the opportunity to talk a little Yellowjackets with Purnell, but we also got to celebrate yet another exceptional show of hers, Prime Video's Fallout.Purnell plays Lucy in the series adaptation of the hugely popular Bethesda game. She's a vault dweller living safe and sound in Vault 33. They've got food, water, and a kind community with a neighborly vibe. Above ground, however, it's the exact opposite. 219 years since nuclear bombs decimated the surface, everyone else is just trying to survive in an apocalyptic wasteland with little to no rules or morals. In an effort to find her father (Kyle MacLachlan), Lucy opts to do the unthinkable, leave the comfort of sheltered vault life behind to venture out into the ruthless outside world. In celebration of Fallout's big debut on Prime Video, Purnell joined me for a Ladies Night conversation to recap her journey in film and television thus far, and discuss how her career priorities have changed over the years. Brontez Purnell is a Renaissance man. He's a musician, a dancer, a filmmaker, and the author of a number of books. His latest is “Ten Bridges I've Burnt,” a departure from the traditional memoir form. It's written in verse, downplays major life events like testing positive for H.I.V.,  explicitly depicts sex in a frank and unromanticized way, and playfully embellishes the truth throughout. “Memoir is fiction—I don't care what anyone says,” Purnell tells The New Yorker Radio Hour's Jeffrey Masters. “You [or] I could both write down our lives as true as we know it. But the second our mom reads it, or one of our siblings reads it, or anybody else peripherally in the book, they can easily say, ‘What are you talking about? That never happened like that.' ” Purnell, who came of age in the underground punk scene in Oakland, California, during the early two-thousands, is no stranger to hard knocks, but that doesn't mean he needs to divulge everything. “If you write about your life, you have to protect the wicked; namely, yourself,” he says. “So there is this game of pulling and punching.”
