Giles Alderson sits and has a great natter with Jai Courtney about acting on the sea, why he takes parts, filming in Australia, what he looks for in a director and shooting Dangerous Animals. Then he talks to director Sean Bryne about genre filmmaking, action, stunts. How he made his debut The Loved Ones. Issues on set and overcoming obstacles as an indie filmmaker and the importance of prep and storyboarding. Jai Courtney's breakthrough came with the role of Varro in the Starz historical drama series "Spartacus: Blood and Sand" and he quickly followed that up with roles in Tom Cruise's "Jack Reacher" and Jack McClane Jr., in "A Good Day to Die Hard" with Bruce Willis. He played Eric Coulter in the "Divergent" film series (2014-2016) and portrayed Kyle Reese in "Terminator Genisys" (2015), and in Stuart Gatt's Catching Dust. One of his most recognizable roles came in 2016 when he joined the DC Extended Universe as Captain Boomerang in David Ayer's "Suicide Squad," a role he reprised with critical acclaim in James Gunn's "The Suicide Squad" (2021). Sean Byrne first gained international acclaim with his 2009 debut feature, "The Loved Ones." The darkly comedic horror film captivated audiences and critics alike, winning the People's Choice Award in the Midnight Madness category at the Toronto International Film Festival. He followed up with "The Devil's Candy" in 2015, a heavy metal-infused horror film. DANGEROUS ANIMALS is in CINEMAS on the 6th JUNE! Eli Craig smashed onto the slasher scene with his genre-defying comedy event Tucker & Dale VS Evil, and he's back with another slasher that upends expectations: Clown in a Cornfield.Clown in a Cornfield is based on the first entry in Adam Cesare's Frendo series which chucks a group of teens into the mayhem of a Midwestern American town where they find themselves picked off by a growing group of killer clowns. Eli Craig then takes that terror from the page and supplants it brilliantly with a satirical and savvy stance, making one of the most enjoyably subversive horror flicks of the year so far. It's also one of the most timely too, as it's a horror film about the flyover states of America, yet it's shot in Canada. That added layer of political devilishness is one of the things that I ask Eli about in the following interview. This chat is an open one from Eli, with the horror director talking about the journey of Tucker & Dale VS Evil from being an unseen flick to a cult classic which has fans demanding a sequel. Eli also talks about the journey of adapting Adam's books for the screen, before making a statement for horror film fans around the world, myself included: If you want more Clown in the Cornfield films, then go and see the first one in cinemas. And for Aussie audiences, you'll be able to do that very soon.Clown in a Cornfield makes its Australian premiere at Fantastic Film Festival Australia on 26 April at the Lido in Hawthorn and the Ritz Randwick. It then is unleashed nation wide on 8 May. This is a film you'll want to see with a screaming audience. We are a completely independent and ad free website that lives on the support of listeners and readers just like you. Gareth Evans - 'Havoc', 'The Raid' and 'Gangs of London' Director and writer on his process. Welcome back to The Filmmakers Podcast, where we delve deep into the world of cinema with the artists who bring unforgettable stories to the screen. This week, your host, Giles Alderson, is beyond excited to welcome a true master of action and suspense, the phenomenal director Gareth Evans! Gareth Evans isn't just a director; he's a cinematic force. He exploded onto the global stage with his groundbreaking martial arts epics: the bone-jarring and genre-redefining The Raid: Redemption, and its critically acclaimed, relentless sequel, The Raid 2. These films, with their breathtakingly brutal and intricately choreographed action sequences, have left an indelible mark on filmmaking worldwide, inspiring countless others. Beyond the Raid saga, Gareth also helmed the atmospheric and unsettling folk-horror Apostle for Netflix, showcasing his impressive range. Furthermore, his incredible work as a creator, writer, and director on the critically acclaimed and intensely visceral TV series Gangs of London has further solidified his reputation for crafting compelling narratives and delivering impactful action on any scale. Now, Gareth returns to the big screen with his highly anticipated action-thriller, Havoc, featuring the immense talent of Tom Hardy. Hardy, a powerhouse performer known for his captivating and intense roles in films like Mad Max: Fury Road, The Dark Knight Rises, Inception, and Peaky Blinders, takes center stage in this gripping story. Joining Hardy in the stellar cast of Havoc are the incredibly talented Forest Whitaker (Oscar winner for The Last King of Scotland), Timothy Olyphant (known for his roles in Justified and Deadwood), Justin Cornwell (Training Day TV series), and Luis Guzmán (Boogie Nights, Narcos). Join Dom Lenoir and Gareth for an in-depth conversation about the making of Havoc. They'll explore the collaborative process of working with a talent like Tom Hardy and the rest of the impressive cast, the evolution of Gareth's signature action choreography within a new narrative framework, the challenges and rewards of bringing such a high-stakes thriller to life, and his insights gained from his remarkable journey in film and television, including his groundbreaking work on Gangs of London.
