So many of us struggle with perfectionism. Women in particular are socialized to believe that being perfect makes us worthy. If you're anything like me, you've spent years trying to be perfect in all the ways you could think of (academically, professionally, in friendships, in romantic relationships, etc.). After pursuing perfectionism for long enough we are left exhausted and disconnected from the things that used to bring joy into our life. I want to encourage you, one recovering perfectionist to another, that there is another way. That's exactly what my guest on this episode of the Unconditionally Worthy podcast and I are talking about. I'm joined by Dr. Rebecca Hubard a licensed clinical psychologist, Kemetic Yoga instructor, former student athlete, and recovering perfectionist.Listen in as Dr. Rebecca shares about her one self-worth journey, how she is releasing perfectionism and how both of us are avoiding the traps of pursuing perfection as new moms. IN THIS EPISODE, WE TALK ABOUT…The problem with perfectionism. How to slow down and lean into the messy middle of life. The miracle of being alive. Effie Baldwin is a U.S. Army veteran, Positive Discipline Educator, Associate Member of the U.S. Golf Teachers Federation and the founder of Believing in a Better World LLC. After earning her Kemetic Yoga Certification in Egypt, she became an instructor for Veterans Yoga Project then later a board member for the nonprofit. She's also an End-of-Life Doula and facilitates Emotional Emancipation Circles to promote healing caused by race-based discrimination within communities of African-descent.Prior to becoming her own boss, Effie spent almost 30 years working in high-level positions with the state and federal government in Senior Policy, Grants Administration, and Program Management—and despite this long list of accolades, she admits that her greatest accomplishment is raising two life-embracing adult children. In this conversation, Effie explains the similarities between Kemetic Yoga and golf as two activities that people can do “from cradle to grave,” and the virtues and ethics that are necessary for both: patience, honesty, mindfulness, focus, discipline—all with the result of self-regulation and self-responsibility. Effie came to yoga through, running, of all things. That is to say, she literally ran herself into the ground and yoga was prescribed by a nurse practitioner as a way to rebuild her immune system and ease her pattern of intensity throughout life. It changed the trajectory of her life, and for the last six years, she's added that to her repertoire of service-oriented work. She's a self-proclaimed optimistic realist, a way of viewing the world through practicality and positivity, giving people and situations the benefit of the doubt. She also recalls questioning the “rules of engagement” very early and crafting a life of learning, growing and independently investigating the truth—as she calls it—to decide what made sense for her own happiness, not what was projected onto her from society. We end by highlighting the importance of nurturing the children of our communities and pouring love and energy into youth, whether they are your own kids or not. The next generation need us to show up as positive, responsible and whole-hearted role models just as we need them to carry on the legacy of our families and improve the impact we have on this planet.Believing in a Better WorldSupport the showConnect with Feathered Pipe Ranch: FacebookInstagramSubscribe to our NewsletterCheck out 2023 Retreats

Welcome to Episode #78 of the Wild Yoga Tribe Podcast! My conversation with Heran Tadesse, a yoga teacher from Ethiopia, was so fascinating as we took a deep dive into African yoga and Kemetic yoga. I hope that this conversation made you curious about how yoga can help transform you into a vessel for peace, acceptance, and love. If you're looking to tune into a podcast episode that is all about yoga in Ethiopia, then this is the conversation for you. Support the podcast: https://www.patreon.com/wildyogatribe Tell me more about Heran Tadesse Heran Tadesse is a yoga teacher from Ethiopia who has been teaching yoga for 9 years in several studios in the capital city of Addis Ababa. She teaches prenatal/postnatal yoga, and is a mother herself. As a student, she started off with Hatha Yoga. She was trained in Kemetic Yoga in Egypt and Afrikan Yoga in Kenya. What to expect in the Yoga In Ethiopia episode of the Wild Yoga Tribe Podcast Heran was adopted from Ethiopia as a baby, and was raised in the Netherlands. She studied tropical forestry in University, and first came to yoga at that time in her life. She practiced and attended classes for 10 years before attending a yoga teacher training in Belgium. After receiving a job offer in Addis Ababa, she returned to Ethiopia. She works in the educational sector and teaches yoga in multiple studios. Heran then took us on a deep dive of what Kemetic Yoga, which has it's roots in ancient Egypt which pre-dates yoga in India, though it is no longer a living part of Egyptian culture. It's about reconnecting with the ancestors, and is modeled after the hieroglyphics. It's akin to Iyengar yoga, with strict, static poses. Afrikan yoga was founded by a man from Jamaica who is based out of Kenya. This style draws upon movements that people make, in the whole Nile Valley. This could be movements that fishermen make, or women who are grinding wheat. There are series of movements, with a lot more flow and, in fact, dance. There is a huge focus on relating to the elements. Heran also walked us through all the diversity and beauty of her country, and about the history of yoga in Ethiopia and where she sees yoga going into the future. As there are only 20 yoga teachers, approximately, in her country— and as she is the most experienced practitioner in her country, she is often stopped on the street and people shout “yoga!” At her. The whole city knows her as the yoga teacher. For the skimmers - What's in the yoga in Ethiopia episode? The institutions of Afrikan yoga and Kemetic yoga Kemetic yoga is based on hieroglyphics Afrikan yoga is based on the natural movements of people in the Nile Valley and the elements Gatekeeping and the inaccessibility of yoga Being a vessel for more peace, acceptance, and love The growing scene of yoga in Ethiopia Connect with Heran Tadesse https://www.facebook.com/heran.tadesse https://ethioyogaqueen.wordpress.com https://www.facebook.com/EthiopianYogaQueen https://www.instagram.com/HeransYoga Want more? It's been fascinating to see how many people all of sudden feel so connected to yoga when they never did before. I've had people tell me they saw flashes of Egypt, of their ancestors and just generally felt so in tune with the practice. Realizing and remembering our connection to wellness as part of our bloodline, lineage and legacy are inherently healing for us — this is one the missing links as we bridge the gap to knowledge of self and embody who we've always been. We hope you enjoyed this discussion and you can practice Kemetic Yoga with me on the online studio and at our virtual donation based classes.

In this episode: Isese - Ifa spiritual tradition from Nigeria Kemetic Yoga - Reclaiming Yoga from the hieroglyphs of Egypt Becoming the wife of a Babalawo - Iya Mother and the role of mothers in our lives Kiyaa Lawrence Faluade (Iya Ifafunmilola) is the General Manager of Yogaskills Atlanta. She was initiated to Ifa in 2018 and her life has changed dramatically every since. She met and married her husband, became the Iya, mother of an Ifa temple and began to understand why she was given such unique names. She hated her names as a child and now she has evolved to living into the meanings of all of her names. Iya Ifafunmilola Faluade talks candidly about this spirit-filled life path that has transported her to the realization of African roots, literally. She knows who she is not through saliva spit into a DNA test tube, but through divination and her connection to Ifa. About Her Business YogaSkills is a method of yoga practice created by Yirser Ra Hotep (Elvrid Lawrence) that emphasizes creating healthful and healing conditions in our body, mind and bio-electric energy systems as opposed to extreme gymnastic and contortionist postures that often cause injury, and result in useless competitive mindsets that plague the commercial Yoga industry today. The YogaSkills Method is based on Kemetic Yoga™, the modern version of an ancient system originating from Kemet - the original name of the land now called Egypt. Kemetic Yoga was developed from primary research conducted by Dr. Asar Hapi and Yirser Ra Hotep (Elvrid Lawrence) of Chicago during the 1970s. The YogaSkills Method is a healing and regenerative yoga system that is characterized by a series of geometrically progressive postures that creates alignment of the spinal column and corrects defects in the skeletal-muscular system in order to relieve stress, increase blood circulation, nutrients and oxygen supply to vital body systems. It also allows cerebrospinal fluid to flow more efficiently and abundantly throughout the entire body and enhances our internal life force energy. Through utilizing YogaSkills, practitioners develop specialized yoga skills that can be applied in many lifetime events. Dr Claudia Miranda ( Cardiologists) and a certified Kemetic Yoga teacher. Created a global online teaching (Soul Kura) in under two months. Claudia teaches Kemetic Yoga, which is from one of the oldest known civilisations ancient Egypt, properly called Kemet in Northeastern Africa. Kemetic Yoga was developed by studying, translating and interpreting the commonly called hieroglyphic texts of Kemet (ancient Egypt), and the images of Yoga postures that are clearly pictured on the walls of the Kemetic temples. Kemetic Yoga is both a philosophy and a practice based upon the Kemetic systems of self-development, that fueled the creation of the Kemetic civilization that spawned western science, philosophy and religion. Dr. Kimani Borland is a Naturopathic Doctor, qualified Vinyasa, and Kemetic Yoga teacher, and mother to two sons. She was born and raised in a Rasta family in Jamaica, graduated from Stanford University, and currently runs a practice in Jamaica, where she specializes in an Integrative approach to wellbeing, using herbs, nutrition, lifestyle & perspective shifts. I loved speaking and learning more from Dr. Kimani in this conversation. We have a lot in common and although it was our first time connecting, I felt like I'd found a long lost friend. She’s humble and honest and speaks candidly about the initiation of becoming a mum for the first time at 21 and her experiences of having two very different cesarean births. She reflects on the philosophies and foundations that set her in good stead along her path and the struggles as well as triumphs along the way. We talk about the reality for many women living in Jamaica and the Caribbean and what personally motivates her to keep going. I know her insights and assuring wisdom in this conversation will uplift you. Let me know what you think on instagram @soulmamacoach and visit www.soulmamajourney.com/podcast for full show notes.

What does it mean to be “healthy” and how does our civic life and that healthy life intersect? What role does the government play in your “healthy” life and how should it address healthcare disparities, healthcare coverage and drug prices? Our civics teacher and friendly neighborhood strategist L. Joy Williams brings Dr. L Toni Lewis to the front of the #SundayCivics class to answer these questions and have a discussion on how we move toward health equity. Our Guest Dr. Luella Toni Lewis pursued a career in social justice through medicine and earned her Bachelor’s Degree in sociology and a Medical Doctorate from Georgetown University. In 2004, Dr. Lewis became a family medicine resident and a member of the Committee of Interns and Residents (CIR/SEIU)–the largest physician’s union in the Service Employees International Union. Dr. Lewis became very active with CIR/SEIU, working with unions and allies to advocate for the community served by the failing system. She served the members of CIR/SEIU in many capacities from 2006-2010, including roles from delegate to National President. From 2010 to 2016, Dr. Lewis served as Chair of SEIU Healthcare, the 1.1 million healthcare worker division of SEIU, and was elected International Vice President of SEIU. Dr. Lewis has worked with SEIU in many areas — including ACA implementation and health system transformation, global health, youth engagement, racial justice, disaster response, and political strategy. Currently, she serves on various boards and leadership committees of health and social justice organizations, including as President of the Public Policy and Education Fund of New York, a member of the National Advisory Committee of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Culture of Health Leadership Program, and a member of Equity Advisory Group for the Institute for Healthcare Improvement. Dr. Lewis has a diverse set of tools to pull from for this mission. In addition to founding Liberation Health Strategies, which focuses on community, national, and global holistic strategies for health justice, she is a licensed Family Physician and Geriatrician and is internationally credentialed in Kemetic Yoga — an inclusive and afrocentric practice inspired by ancestral and ancient Egyptian culture–and Femme!–a multisensory fusion of dance, sensual motion, meditation and celebration for self-care, release, and empowerment. Dr. Lewis is originally from Mounds (pop. 800), a rural city in southern Illinois, and currently resides in the Bed-Stuy Neighborhood of Brooklyn, NY.
Darshania is a multifaceted gem who breaths new life into this world by way of her intuitive offerings as a Kemetic yoga practitioner, natural healer, hip hop artist and spiritual counselor. In this episode of Ancient Future Technologies we take a deeper look into the historical and modern application of Kemetic yoga and Natural Birthing and how these technologies can affect our lives and the lives of our children. We also talk about Darshania's passion for hip hop, music production, her new music project with Ras G and her retreats she will be hosting in 2020.
We return to the foundation in this episode as we dive deep into the qualities of a root chakra that is out of alignment and explore modalities to become more sensitive to the area and get into alignment. Your host explains the principle and mythology of Sekhmet, the Kemetic goddess associated with the root chakra. We discuss how to rise out of the mud and evolve into a beautiful lotus. We discuss how the attributes of fire and a lion devouring negative habits and thinking further support personal and spiritual evolution. Redirecting sexual energy into creative energy is explored as a way to utilize divine gifts. Herbs, essential oils, crystals particular to the root chakra are covered as well as Kemetic Yoga poses and sequences that further support alignment, blood circulation, vitality and virility. This is an uplifting and empowering conversation that reminds us that we are spiritual beings having a human/physical experience. The goal is to create the bridge from the root to the crown, the physical to the spiritual realms to be able to tap into abundance. We seal up the reasoning with a 10 minute LAM meditation. The Kemetic Principles of Auset and Maat are added to the conversation about the heart chakra. A comparison between being in alignment and out of alignment is offered. The 12 Petals of the Lotus are shared and tips on how to align oneself using affirmation, chant, herbs, essential oils and stones is discussed. Yoga poses specific to opening the heart and shoulders are suggested including Kemetic Yoga sequences to further support Opening to Love and aligning the heart chakra. According to acupuncturist and dispenser of love based medicine Noell Eanes, at one point we were all running around with three eyes. Evolution dealt us a sad blow, removing our third eye which allowed us to see emotions. Now Noell keeps her third eye open, her chakras tuned up and her Qi flowing with a number of techniques and the aid of a ring made of Shattucktite. Noell can even perform acupuncture without needles, known as Shakuju, and hangs out with witches. On paper this all might seem eccentric and weird, but the way Noell tells it, it all sounds perfectly, well, lovely. Blaze Edwards is a photographer, but that s the one thing nobody talks about in this conversation. Blaze has plenty else to talk about though, including the birth of Kemetic Yoga. Kemet is apparently the original name for Africa, and if you re wondering how Yoga, normally associated with India, came to be African, well Blaze can tell you. Since we last met her on Happy Hour, Kathryn Rose Wood has transformed from the front person in a band to a formidable singer songwriter and the city s go to person for other women singer songwriters as the host of an all woman singer songwriter night at the International House Hotel. Andrew Duhon was a woman in a past life some 500 years ago and today marks the beginning of his and Grant s journey into the world of warlocks. Photos at Wayfare by Sam Weil.
