POPULARITY
Interview by Kris PetersThe Murdering roared back to life in June last year, releasing the track Finality and breaking an eight-year drought that saw the band release nothing since their 2016 EP From Hell. While many bands had come and gone over that period, if you were a fan of the heavier side of metal, then you still remembered The Murdering. After establishing a loyal, rabid fan base due largely to From Hell and the ferocity of their live shows, The Murdering fell off the proverbial radar for the best part of ten years. Not broken up. Not disbanded. Just simply not playing or actively recording. While to many of us they are all the same thing, not so for the members of The Murdering knew their day in the flames would come once more, if not when exactly, but the seeds of melancholy had been planted far too deep for there not to be a continuation of some sort.Finality reignited the hunger and set The Murdering on a collision path with a collection of songs based around the crimes and passion of a serial killer under the guise of Death Process, a five-part tale of death and decay to be released sometime this year.Having already released the devastatingly brutal Daemon Eater, The Murdering have decided to brush off the remaining cobwebs and set this year's Necrosonic Festival on August 23 at Brisbane's Mansfield Tavern as the day the music world once more bows down to the masters of death.HEAVY sat down with vocalist Joel for a chat about the re-emergence of The Murdering and their first live show in nine years at Necrosonic Festival."It's a killer lineup so far," he smiled. "Obviously, there's a second wave to come out for it as well, and I think people are going to be pretty psyched when they see who's on that second announcement."With a handful of bands playing at Necrosonic - including Beanflipper, DaysEnd and Brace - being metaphorically brought back from the dead, we ask Joel if The Murdering fall into the category of one of the undead after so long away from the scene."I wouldn't say we're back from the dead," he laughed. "It was more just a very long continuation of what we were doing before we stopped doing it, I guess. I haven't even really thought of it that way, to be honest with you (laughs). We're just happy to be on the bill. Like I say, we haven't played a live show in a very long time, and we've got some really good material coming out at the moment. We've not got any expectations on anything. It's just going to be a day to have a good time and just knock the dust off."In the full interview, Joel emphasized the importance of music loving promoters like Kent Bartley (organizer of Necrosonic) in fostering connections within the music community, highlighting the flow on benefits for heavy metal bands and music in this country. He expressed enthusiasm for the festival and shared insights about their upcoming EP, Death Process, which features a narrative centred on a fictional serial killer and aims to create a cohesive audio-visual experience. We spoke about The Murdering's recent collaboration with The Amenta, what fans can expect from their live show, future plans for the band and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

In wrapping up 2023 for the Scars and Guitars podcast, I take a closer look at the significant events and highlights defining the musical journey. Throughout the year, I attended a variety of live performances, including shows by Emperor, I Am Morbid, Incantation, Extreme, Living Colour, Hanabie, Archspire, Ingested, Triple Kill, Orpheus Omega, Halo Effect, and Misery, amongst many others. I discuss each show and summarise the performance and why it was noteworthy. The podcast featured engaging conversations with prominent figures across heavy metal and beyond. I had the pleasure of hosting many Cradle of fIlth alums: Paul Ryan, Chris Bell, Nigel Wingrove, Mike Exeter, James McIlroy, and, notably, Sarah Jezebel Deva. There were conversations with Scott Edgar from Misery, Phil Soussan, Jesper Strömblad, the Tardy brothers from Obituary, Jason Bonham, Jamie Stinson AKA Astennu, Blitz from Overkill, Mille Petrozza, David Ellefson, Marc from Metal Church, Scott from Carnifex, Dave Coutts and Mark Dunn, Eric from The Amenta, Dave Haley and many, many more. I discuss why each episode is essential. In terms of literature, my collection expanded with the addition of the Silverchair Book and Tana Douglas's roadie memoir. So I have something to say about these books. Regarding musical releases, several notable albums caught my attention. There's a summary of each, and I explain why the alums are worthy. Suffocation's "Hymns from the Apocrypha" highlighted Terrence Hobb's consistent musical prowess. Overkill's "Scorched" reaffirmed their enduring impact in the world of metal. "When Angels Kill" by Fifth Angel impressed with Ken Mary's drumming finesse. Incantation's "Unholy Deification" offered doom-tinged death metal at its best. Cadaver's "The Age of the Offended" featured a strong death metal statement with Ronni Le Tekrø. Sadus returned with "The Shadow Inside," showcasing Darren Travis's dedication. Wes Hauch's "Death is But a Door (EP)" demonstrated Wes Hauch's guitar virtuosity. Grand Cadaver's "Deities of Deathlike Sleep" delivered old-school Stockholm death metal. The Amenta's "Plague of Locus" showcased their take on classic covers. Werewolves and Faustian, featuring Matt Wilcock, offered creative and competent riff-heavy music. Additionally, I've compiled an eligibility list for future discussions, which includes Cyhra, Doro, Till the Dirt, Sylosis, Svalbard, Cryptopsy, Watain, Cavalera Brothers, Immortal, Alice Cooper, Cannibal Corpse, Shepherds Rein, Steven Wilson, AETERNUS, Aeons Abyss, Kataklysm, Ringworm, and Carnifex. In conclusion, 2023 was a year filled with remarkable music and insightful conversations about extreme music. I remain committed to providing a serious and thoughtful perspective on the genre, and I look forward to continuing this journey in the future. Thank you for being a part of the musical exploration! Have a great Christmas and even better 2024! Andrew McK.

There is no death in the Osirian religion, only decay and change, and periodic renewal; only evolution and transformation in the domain of matter and the transubstantiation into spirit. In the so-called death of Osiris it is rebirth, not death, exactly the same as in the changes of external nature. At the close of the...

Rough Draft of History: A Century of US Social Movements in the News (Princeton UP, 2022) offers a new view of U.S. social movement history across the twentieth century by examining how movement organizations were covered in major national newspapers. The book analyzes U.S. social movements--ranging from temperance to women's suffrage to the Tea Party and Occupy Wall Street--in a broad comparative fashion. Drawing on the full set of digitized newspapers from the twentieth-century (a task that as little as twenty years ago was considered impossible for researchers), the book offers both an institutional history of news--why the media covered what they covered, and to what effect--and also shows the influence of news coverage on a range of social movements, from the well-known to the obscure. Media coverage is a crucial component of movement visibility; news can draw the general public into battles over new issues but also shapes how movements are perceived. The authors show how a movement's structure--its organization, as well as the protest and non-protests activities it undertakes--influence its coverage, and consider too how macro-political conditions shape movement coverage. They reveal surprising gaps between contemporaneous coverage and current scholarly focus; for instance, the labor movement received the most journalistic attention of any movement of the twentieth century, but it is greatly understudied in comparison to how much it dominated the public sphere. Taking stock of news coverage across a century of movements thus illuminates movements that were influential in public discourse but have been neglected by scholars. Edwin Amenta is professor of sociology and political science at the University of California, Irvine. His books include When Movements Matter and Bold Relief (both Princeton).
