In this episode we explore the origins and significance of Yule, Solstice, their connection to Christmas, and a discussion on New Year's resolutions vs. astrological goal setting. It's informative, silly, slightly unhinged, with support for your wellness and personal revolution this holiday season. Yule & Solstice:Celtic holiday celebrating the winter solstice (shortest day of the year). Pagan origins, influenced by Norse festival of Jol. Festival of Light: symbolizes the rebirth of the sun. Celebrated around December 21st in the Northern Hemisphere. Traditional celebrations: Lighting bonfires and candles Decorating with evergreens (holly, ivy, mistletoe) Feasting, dancing, singing Burning a Yule log Symbolism: Evergreen: Rebirth and renewal Holly: Hope Mistletoe: Fertility Tree: Life Christian influence: Many Yule traditions were appropriated by Christianity, making conversion “easier.” New Year's Resolutions: Began in the early 19th century (possibly late 17th century). High abandonment rate: 80% of resolutions fail (U.S. News & World Report) 91% fail by the second week of February (Lifestyle Medical Centers) Only 8% are kept throughout the year. Focus on willpower vs. "why power" (underlying motivation). Astrological Goal Setting: Aligning goals with the natural cycles of the zodiac and meteorological seasons. Emphasizes energetic support and flow. Dr. Dionna Williams is an Autistic and first-generation academic and martial artist. Dionna received their MSc and PhD from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and completed her postdoctoral training at Johns Hopkins University. Dionna has received many prestigious academic fellowships and awards for her research accomplishments and commitment to diversifying academic medicine. She is currently an Associate Professor of Pharmacology and Chemical Biology at Emory University where their research interests center on the intersection of HIV and substance use, focusing on identifying immunologic and pharmacologic means to increase the neurologic health of people living with HIV. While Dionna amassed academic and professional accomplishments they struggled with what she once considered to be a collection of seemingly unrelated quirks and social discomfort. While Dionna was always aware of these differences, they became less of a hindrance to interacting with people as she learned to suppress the things that made her most different from others. However, these strategies eventually became less effective and at the most stressful time of their life Dionna began therapy. It was through this experience that they received an autism diagnosis at the age of 35, which has been life changing. Since this realization one and a half years ago, Dionna realized all the ways in which she lived an inauthentic life and they are now committed to living a life of their own accord, unmasked, and open about the joys and challenges faced as a neurodivergent scientist from a low-income background raising the most amazing 3-year old.  3 ways you can support the podcast and the work we do... In this episode of DB|BD Ellen McGirt and Jessica Helfand talk with two extraordinary women from two seemingly different corners of the design world: Dionna Dorsey and Olivia Peebles. We say “seemingly” because, while they occupy different design disciplines, they approach their work in similar ways. They are both multidisciplinary designers with the hearts and souls of artists whose visuals bring to life what they and their collaborators know to be true about the world.First up, we hear from Dionna Dorsey, who is running three design businesses at the same time! She has her own design firm called Dionna Dorsey Design, where she designs imagery and apparel for powerhouse organizations like Planned Parenthood. She is also the founder of District of Clothing, which is probably best known for those ubiquitous “Trust Black Women” t-shirts. She is also the CEO of Creative Ladder, an organization she co-founded with Ryan Reynolds and David Griner in 2022, that makes creative careers accessible to people from historically marginalized communities.Dionna shares why her values take front and center in her work, how she is making design careers accessible to everyone, and why eating cereal and watching Arthur is one of her favorite creative rituals.Next up, Ellen and Jessica talk with Production Designer Olivia Peebles. Olivia has worked as a set decorator on some of the biggest films of the past few years, including Killers of the Flower Moon and Oppenheimer. Her first film as lead production designer, Exhibiting Forgiveness, premiered at Sundance this year. Exhibiting Forgiveness is written and directed by iconic American painter Titus Kaphar.Olivia discusses how she, as a white woman, brings to life worlds and stories that are not her own. She also shares how her training as a painter meshes with her career as a production designer and the opportunities and limitations A.I. poses to artists. On this season of DB|BD, co-hosts Jessica Helfand and Ellen McGirt are observing equity by highlighting the “redesigners” — people who are addressing urgent problems by challenging big assumptions about how the world can and should work — and who it should work for. This season of DB|BD is powered by Deloitte. Visit our site for more on this episode and to view a transcript.Titus Kaphar's Ted TalkClimate Central's Urban Heat Hot Spots StudyFollow The Design of Business | The Business of Design on Spotify, Apple Podcasts or your favorite podcast app. Episodes are produced by Design Observer's editorial team. Maybe you've seen the Twin Flames Universe documentary? Maybe you've heard the ‘twin flame' terminology before? Maybe this is your first time ever hearing those words. Over the years I've heard the term a few times, but never really understood what it was all about so I wanted to learn. I sat down with Dionna Chambers to dive into what the whole ‘twin flame' journey is all about. She made some really good points and I'm grateful for the conversation. Dionna is a coach that helps founders and entrepreneurs incorporate a more spiritual side to their business and she herself has been on the journey for four years. She went all in on sharing with us her experience, perspective, and takeaways. I honor her vulnerability here. The idea of ‘Twin Flames' was popularized in the 1970's through Elizabeth Prophet's book ‘Twin Flames and Soulmates.' Some believe the concept originated in the Ancient Egyptian ‘Book of the Dead,' while others say the Vedic text ‘Shiva Purana' contribute to the idea. My big takeaway is that with religion waning in the western world many have turned to the notion of ‘twin flames' as opposed to soulmates due to it's more agnostic inclination. Tune in and learn the difference between the two as well as numerous other ways to think about this idea. As always, take what resonates and leave what doesn't. Happy Listening._______________________________________________If you like what you heard today then you can do me a huge favor! Share this episode with a friend or leave a review. In this bonus episode I am joined by two of my Magical Mentoring clients to share their experiences with and through the containers I hold. There's no way to explain what happens inside the containers of Magical Mentoring - because it is both practical and magical...it's intuitive and has quite a bit of flow to it and there is structure, but it also unfolds in its own expression during the process. The only way to truly KNOW what it's like is to embark on it. But, I know, it's an unknown…so that can be scary or weird so people don't take the risk…which means they miss out on the rewards. Many listeners have expressed this in the past, so I thought we'd take a step towards sharing better. So although this episode isn't a reality based session (though spoiler alert…I'm considering that for future episodes) this is straight from the mentees mouths and experiences. This episode is a safe way to better understand, and to perhaps see if it's a fit for you, at some point on your path. Fall Magical Mentoring is opening for enrollment the week after this episode is published. I'm scheduling exploration calls August 25th through September 3rd, 2023. So if this episode piques your interest, head to the link in the show notes to schedule your 30-min exploration call with me to begin Mentoring this September through December 2023. If you're listening to this after these dates, don't worry, Magical Mentoring happens twice a year. Hang tight till Spring. And even if you're not interested in mentoring this conversation is incredible intersectional feminist joy, exploration, support, and process. There is a spark here for everyone. My guests on this episode have been working with me for years now since the birth of this program 5 years ago. They know the hang-ups and they know the blessings. They're truth tellers and discerning women. They are both stunning coaches, podcasters, and healers in their own rite. Highlights in this episode: How Magical Mentoring work What it feels like to be lost and repeating toxic patterns What it feels like when you are lost and wanting to reincorporate spirituality into your life What it feels like when you're on the other side of shadow work How to step into better decision making and abundance How to shift from shaky ground to stable foundations Manifesting from wounded spaces a.k.a trauma manifesting What it's like to be coached in a truly non-patriarchal space Delving deep into self care to micro-dose your magic How coaching through Tarot readings work Ready to explore Group Magical Mentoring NOW? Read full details and schedule your complimentary 30-min call with Tandy here. Who is Keli Lyn Jewel? With a background in all the best things people love to hate (the arts, sex work, queer culture, intersectional feminism, alternative health, direct sales, spirituality…), Keli Lyn Jewel combines cognitive, somatic, and esoteric approaches to her work as a life coach. She helps her clients excavate the internal narratives to see what's been handed to them through socialization and what's truly theirs, so they can reclaim their agency in life. Dismantling internalized bullshit can be daunting. Doing it alone? Forget it. When the call is coming from inside the house, we often can't even see it on our own. But within an accessible, supportive community, and coach for cognitive and somatic processing, to help excavate those narratives so you can hold them up to the light? That's some fucking magic. Dionna Dorsey Calloway, co-Founder & CEO of The Creative Ladder, shared the story behind her title with us on February 1, 2023.The Creative Ladder, a non-profit connecting, inspiring and elevating a new generation of creative industry leaders, was launched by Ryan Reynolds, Dionna Dorsey Calloway, and David Griner. The founders created the nonprofit in response to a few glaring problems regarding equal and diverse representation in the creative industry. Dionna is also the founder of DISTRICT of CLOTHING, a lifestyle brand encouraging progression, inspiring action, and supporting self-love. With apparel and accessory items for the sideline rejectors who awake with passion for progress and desire to make their dreams reality, District of Clothing is worn by the change-makers making change happen. Dionna's love for design began as a young child with a coloring book and has since grown into an entrepreneurial passion. She uses culture, empathy, simplicity, and inspiring design to support clients in their brand development. Her compassionate nature allows her to empathize with her clients–as well as their audiences–and the result has been her unique ability to create, develop, and nurture ‘the' message to best align the purpose and passion for brands. Dionna attended Villanova University in Villanova, Pennsylvania and Istituto Marangoni in Milan, Italy, and currently resides in Washington, DC.SUE SAYS"Dionna's interest from the very beginning was based around design. With the influence and support from a tribe of women including her entrepreneurial grandmothers and an aunt who saw her gift for creativity, Dionna was able to develop self-esteem that allowed her to pursue her own calling while always staying true to her inner voice."Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/women-to-watch-r/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

This prevents company leadership from making necessary changes, and prevents people from feeling fulfilled, recognized, and included at work. At AllVoices, we want to change that by providing a completely safe, anonymous way for people to report issues directly to company leaders. This allows company leadership real transparency into what's happening in their companies—and the motivation to address issues quickly. Dionna is a Conscious Coach that supports moms, helping them to create sustainable balance in all areas of life without the shame and guilt that comes with this important role! After becoming a mother and investing in self-development, therapy, leadership trainings and more, Dionna saw a huge gap in the industry. Moms were being left out and really lacking the support systematically, socially, and emotionally to manage this role.Likewise, becoming a single mom in the midst of a pandemic presented new challenges that came with being an entrepreneur and Dionna knew her purpose was not only in supporting moms but in their ability to make it on their own!Dionna works deliberately, compassionately and swiftly so you walk way as the next version of who you get to be in this lifetime! Here are some of the topics we talked about: How she found the courage to stretch herself beyond her comfort zone to make space for the good things she knew were coming. How she confronted head-on a few things she suspected were holding her back:AlcoholSelf-Doubt Why going ALL-IN isn't harder than baby steps. How our brains tell us we aren't good enough when we are actually SHINING!
