Estrangement, Healing, and Repair (Season 6 | Episode 241) with Joy Okoye This conversation focuses on estrangement, ambiguous grief, and repair in family relationships, especially between parents and adult children. Joy Lynn Okoye describes her current work as centered on writing, meditation, and the relationship between relational integrity and grief. Estrangement, Healing and Repair She explains that her experience with estrangement is personal and complex. She was estranged from her mother by choice when she was younger, and she is now navigating estrangement with one of her sons. She distinguishes between different forms of estrangement, including cases involving addiction or mental illness, and estrangement chosen by an adult child. A major theme is the difference between repair and healing. Okoye says repair is about addressing the relationship, while healing is the deeper internal work each person must do separately. She emphasizes that these are not the same, and that people often try to skip the healing work and move too quickly into fixing the relationship. 7:37 Repair Begins with Boundaries 13:20 Healing and Repair Lanes 20:34 Letters Before Reconnection 29:09 Knowing Your Estrangement 33:49 Retreat for the Ruptured 35:01 Father Loss and Pain 39:50 More Estrangement Episodes She also discusses the importance of boundaries and patience. In her view, people need to understand their own role in the conflict, let boundaries stand, and avoid pushing for immediate resolution. She says that adult children and parents may be in different places emotionally, and that one person cannot control the other person's readiness for repair. The discussion includes the impact of public language and social media on family conflict. Okoye says people often name and judge experiences too quickly, before they have fully processed them. She prefers a more private and modest approach to repair, rather than exposing every detail publicly. She describes concrete practices she uses with clients, including writing different kinds of letters to express anger, defense, and later acknowledgment. She also talks about spiritual and ritual practices, including conversations with a child's “higher self,” as ways to create space and support healing. The episode closes with details about her retreat, “What We Carry,” focused on maternal rupture, estrangement, addiction, and incarceration, and where listeners can find her online. Send us a textChinelo Okoye is a remarkable double-board-certified nurse practitioner specializing in both adult and pediatric care. Beyond her clinical expertise, she passionately advocates for the representation of nurses in the media. As the founder of Nurse on Purpose, she works to eliminate stereotypes and showcase the intelligence, professionalism, leadership skills, and dedication to patient care that nurses embody. I had a candid conversation with Chinelo about my complacency regarding the negative portrayal of nurses. I acknowledged the hypersexualized Halloween costumes and the disheartening narratives in shows like Nurse Jackie and One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, which depict nurses in such a negative light. Despite recognizing that these portrayals didn't reflect the true essence of nursing, I realized I had not actively challenged these misrepresentations—sadly, I didn't even get angry about it. What are the consequences if we choose to ignore the media's misconceptions about us? Chinelo emphasized that our ability to attract new nurses to the profession diminishes when potential candidates see these negative portrayals. Moreover, it impacts nurse retention. After all, why would a brilliant nurse remain in a field that is so inaccurately represented?Through her Nurse on Purpose podcast, Chinelo elevates the image of nursing by showcasing nurses as innovators, advocates, leaders, and entrepreneurs, demonstrating the diverse and impactful roles that real nurses play. As author Robert Byrne aptly stated, “The purpose of life is a life of purpose,” and Chinelo is undoubtedly embodying that purpose every day.In the five-minute snippet: She's in the dog house and she's not sad about it. “I wasn't looking to be in a business,” jokes Danai Gurira. “I really felt like I wanted to tell stories about things I haven't seen.” The Zimbabwean-American saw a way to use the craft of writing to inspire others, even though she initially thought she was going to be an academic. “The focus is always around African women,” she says. “I was born in the midwest but we moved back shortly after Zimbabwe gained independence. I guess I came to a place of outrage.” She received education from American and British influences. “The African was very rarely heard or seen, or put in an obscure light. It was a one-dimensional, damaging image.” “I wanted to tell stories that countered that. I've said this a billion times, but it's a burden on my heart and also an outrage that leads me to want to explore a story and give it a dimension, as best as I can.” In one such story, a play called Eclipsed, Gurira writes about five Liberian women and their tale of survival near the end of the Second Liberian Civil War. It was nominated for a Tony Award and was the first play with an all-black and female creative cast and team to premiere on Broadway. “Then there are times when I'm just fascinated by something and have to pursue the story. But the burden is that I feel these stories need to be heard and I don't understand why they're not.” As she was working to shatter these ideas about Africans, other creatives were pursuing the same idea. “Black Panther was a real gift in the way that it was doing what I wanted to do all along and trying to do myself as a playwright.” As an actress, Gurira is best known for playing Michonne on The Walking Dead and Okoye in the Black Panther franchise. “They were bringing forth characters that we had never seen before.” This meant hiring a cultural advisor for Black Panther and working to be as authentic as possible. “The stakes were very high for us to hold nothing back. Thankfully, there was an open forum for that.” Want more? Steal my first book, Ink by the Barrel - Secrets From Prolific Writers right now for free.
