I didn't see any discussions of her iconic discography, so I reached out to a fellow stan and a podcast legend to help me record this episode. They have a deep knowledge of pop culture and music, and I'm so glad they shared their perspective on the politics of her music career as well as fun facts about the samples and features of some of our favorite tracks. I was pleasantly surprised as I reviewed the latest songs from Kard, Hyoyeon and Yerin Baek, whose spring single album is actually perfect for this time of year. I've decided that have at least one public and one Patreon episode each month. For five dollars a month, you'll be able to access hidden episodes of Season 3 as well as the full episodes of Season 2. This will give me a chance to talk about a lot more topics. Speaking of which, for the upcoming Patreon I'll be reviewing the latest comebacks in 2022, including the album from one of the Girls Generation biases! Anyway, in this episode, I'm going to introduce a new segment and talk about some Kpop events that have grinded my gears. I'll also share part of my discussion with Nat that didn't make it on to last month's episode due to time, but I thought it fit with this month's theme of casual sexism in Kpop. Corrections/Clarifications: I didn't include the Sugababes in the British girl group ranking, but there was no shade intended. They're just a group that I haven't gotten into. Nat is 1st-generation Jamaican-Canadian, so she was able to offer some much-needed insight on the Sean Paul debacle. We think Vanessa is absolutely gorgeous! It's unfortunate that fatphobia and racism in the industry negatively affected her career and mental heath. Cheers to (and justice for) Vanessa White! Corrections/Clarifications If you haven't seen the M/V for Hyoyeon's Second, just watch her performance on Dingo's channel. The editors did the work, and Hyoyeon casually owned the choreography. I need to add that I love Hyolyn and Dasom's friendship. I love a good LeMak moment, and I looked forward to their collaboration (the Dazed magazine photos...I mean...). Hyolyn's "To Find a Reason" does not part of her Ramblings series. The songs from that series are Happiness and W.O.E. Are hats with bangs a new (or returning) fashion item in Kpop? I saw it in the M/V's for Weekend and Summer or Summer. Can we put that accessory back in Hell's closet where it belongs? While cosplaying as Malificent, Fei is sporting a ponytail, not a bun. Upon a re-listen (with some light chair twerking), I enjoyed CL's Spicy the most out of any comeback this year, but I had to rate it lower than Summer or Summer out of principle. Jiyeon has a diamond-studded side part with her black outfit, not her white one. My heart goes out to the families of those who were injured or lost their lives at the Astroworld concert. I pray that there will be healing for the individuals who have experienced irreversible devastation. This situation could have been prevented if there was greater consideration and attention to detail in the planning of the event, and I hope that public pressure will bring about the necessary safety measures to protect and prioritize human life. Culture Unfiltered discusses this event in more detail: https://www.tiktok.com/@cultureunfiltered/video/7027517731734015278?lang=en&is_copy_url=1&is_from_webapp=v1 Wait! There's more! Listen to the full episode on Patreon: patreon.com/blkgirltalkspop | All social media: linktr.ee/blkgirltalkspop Hey y'all! I'm back for another music haul - with a twist. This month I'll be reviewing Christian artists who are making music in several genres - including EDM, country, and KPOP! On my Patreon, I'll review recent albums by my childhood faves, Nicole C. Mullen and Nichole Nordeman. I hope you enjoy it! Let me know your thoughts on the music I shared and recommend some more Christian artists for me to shout out! Disclaimer(s): First, I want apologize for any audio issues in advance. Also, I don't know any of these people, so I'm not speaking on anyone's behalf. I just make comments based on the words and actions of others. I don't intend to cause harm or offense, but I apologize for any words which could have communicated a lack of empathy or intentional thoughtlessness. Please respectfully let me know what I could have said better or seen in a different light. I want to keep learning so I can create opportunities for conversation and change, and I hope that you will grow with me. Corrections/Clarifications: Nicole C. Mullen's song is called "Call on Jesus" NOT "When I Call on Jesus" *facepalm* (I won't change the name of the top tier though) I enjoyed Ninano's M/V a lot more during my most recent rewatch, but I'm still missing that something from Minzy, you know? Maybe my expectations of dancers in Kpop groups are too high? After recording and seeing the lyrics of Superwoman, I realized that the song might've leaned more towards "Spring" (Park Bom's than "Flower Shower." However, neither Minzy's vocal and stage performance didn't feel very emotional, to me. I didn't see or hear her journey from heartbreak to triumph. I didn't catch the lyrics for Brittney Spencer's Da** Right, You're Wrong at all. This song is a fun twist on the "Be Yourself" anthems we've seen before. Wait! There's more! Listen to the full episode on Patreon: patreon.com/blkgirltalkspop | All social media: linktr.ee/blkgirltalkspop Hey y'all! It's been a while, so I'm so grateful to you for coming back. This month will be another music haul! First, I'll bring back the segment Hear Me, Hear Me and introduce a new segment called Where Did the Black TV Shows Go. Then on my Patreon, I'll dive into my problems with One Tree Hill's Drama Queens podcast. After that, I'll discuss the music I've bought! I'll be reviewing the first albums from the Black pop artist Lu Kala (Kah-luh) and the jazz artist Christie Dashiell (Duh-sheel), a former member of the a capella group Afro-Blue. On my Patreon, I'll discuss Meghan Trainor's second album Thank You and GWSN's (Go-won Sun-yuh's), or Girls in the Park's, mini-album The Other Side of the Moon. Disclaimer(s): First, I want apologize for any audio issues in advance. Also, I don't know any of these people, so I'm not speaking on anyone's behalf. Please respectfully let me know what I could have said better or seen in a different light. I want to keep learning so I can create opportunities for conversation and change, and I hope that you will grow with me. Corrections Corner: I referred to Sondi as a 3b as a shorthand for having lighter skin, but Black people with lighter skin can have type 4 hair, so my apologies for any offense. Furthermore, Matthew accused Sondi of being IMmature. The current Run the World trailer is different from the trailer I saw during the summer (maybe there was backlash to suggesting that another light-skinned biracial woman would be the lead of a Black show...). The trailer below gives the FOUR stars of the show time to shine. Christie Dashiell effortlessly scatted in Afro Blue's cover of American Boy, NOT Killing me Softly. Christie Dashiell's album is HIT. No question about it! I'll be discussing Laboum, a girl group that's received some renewed interest from K-pop fans with their comeback Journey to Atlantis. In this episode, I'll discuss their reality show Laboum Project, review their mini-album Love Sign, and rant about some enemies of progress I don't like. Check out my Patreon for my review of their album Two of Us and more enemies of progress, which includes the behavior of a certain YouTuber in the beauty/commentary space. I want to keep learning so I can create opportunities for conversation and change, and I hope that you will grow with me. Corrections/Clarification Corner: Please note that the most recent episode, "Kelly, can you handle this?" is an audio podcast only. Laboum is signed to the joint venture Global H Media. Sungmin has been on hiatus from the Super Junior since 2015. Correction on what ZN said: According to the translation provided by Laboum Projec Subs, ZN is saying, "Become nice...become lighter" to her skin. I apologize for not using inclusive language in my colorism conversation. PEOPLE (not just those who identify as a man or woman), have been oppressed by colorism around the world. During Hello Baby, Sooyoung calls Yuri dirty because of her own internalized colorism. Yuri's dark skin is not to blame for Sooyoung's prejudice. I also want to add that Soori themselves may have lost opportunities because people discriminated against them due to colorism. I would love to see a darker idol with a cute concept flourish as well! Even in Western nations, colorism affects darker Black and brown people's ability to build generational wealth for their families, although the discrimination faced by marginalized communities may be less explicit. Corrections Corner: Destiny's Child reunited for the "Say Yes" cover at the Stellar Awards. China McClain is dark-skinned, not brown-skinned. China's Halloween song is called Calling all the Monsters. The middle McClain sister's name is Lauryn. Super Junior debuted with twelve members (in my opinion they now have fourteen FULL members with Henry and Zhou Mi). Corrections Corner: I listened to the episode of Bachelor Happy Hour (link below) where Rachel addresses Rachel and Ivan's conversation. I'd recommend it! Rachel's much more muted than what I suggested lol. It starts at 20:23, and Rachel makes a great point about the multiple cultures that Tayshia represents and how she could have expanded upon her experience. I thought it was interesting that Rachel mentioned that black and brown leads will be pressured to have these conversations. EVERY LEAD needs to have the range, and we should be expecting this from EVERYBODY, especially white people, who have benefited from not addressing these issues. Two episodes in one week?! I'm on a roll! I talk about some respectability queens before discussing my latest Kpop faves, Weki Meki. I'm giving a few POC Profiteers the side-eye, and I'm a little nervous about falling in love with these eight girls from Fantagio. Let me know what you think! This episode will the first in a series covering the Verzuz battle between the R&B legends Brandy and Monica. Between the age-old competition and the fresh awkward moments, Brandy and Monica give us great vocals, wonderful pearls of wisdom, and a great conversation about defining platonic relationships, especially the ones that are weirdly intimate but maybe really not? Jessi's first single is Nunu Nana, but her EP is Nuna. There is cultural appropriation in CL's The Baddest Female (2013) and Jessi's Nunu Nana (2020) that I didn't notice until a rewatch, so please view at your own discretion. Hey y'all! Welcome to the first episode of my relaunched podcast Black Girl Talks POP (formerly GUDcast). I can't wait to celebrate thirteen years of Soshi and dive into new music from Hyolyn, Jessi, and Hyoyeon. I haven't been so excited about Kpop in a while, and I'm excited to celebrate these second gen queens! If this is your first time stopping by my podcast, welcome!
