We're wrapping up this season of Valley Voices Summer Shorts with a story from Michael “Buster” McMahon complete with examples of his karaoke prowess and a mob boss with a carnation in his lapel. Enjoy!
Viel Erfolg beim Lernen!

From her 1969 debut album First Take (featuring Open Studio artist Ron Carter on bass) to her iconic collaborations with Donny Hathaway – we dissect why what Flack didn't play was just as important as what she did. We'll explore how this classical piano prodigy, who entered Howard at 15 and didn't write her own songs, became the Quiet Storm Queen that influenced every soul, R&B, and jazz singer since. You'll hear why her understated yet commanding vocals and that classic 70s kick drum made “Killing Me Softly” a hit, grooving duets like “You've Got A Friend,” and deep cuts that redefined ballads. Join us to uncover the genius of Roberta Flack.

We have lost another music icon—Roberta Cleopatra Flack passed away this week at the age of 88. Born in North Carolina, Flack's musical genius was evident early on. At just 15, she earned a full scholarship to Howard University, making her the youngest freshman in the school's history. Though she started as a classical pianist and teacher, her talent led her to jazz and pop, performing in Washington, D.C. clubs in the late 1960s. Les McCann discovered her at Mr. Henry's restaurant, leading to her record deal with Atlantic Records. From there, Flack delivered some of the most timeless and soulful music of our generation. Her hits like “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face,” “Killing Me Softly with His Song,” and “Feel Like Makin' Love” topped the Billboard Hot 100, and she became the first artist to win back-to-back Grammys for Record of the Year. Though Clint Eastwood's use of her song in Play Misty for Me catapulted her into mainstream fame, her collaborations with Donny Hathaway and others defined the soundtrack of our lives. After being diagnosed with ALS, Flack retired from performing but remained active in philanthropy, supporting music education and animal rescues. Reports say she passed at home, though her manager stated she suffered cardiac arrest on her way to the hospital in Manhattan. Roberta Flack leaves behind a legacy of groundbreaking music and timeless artistry. May she rest in peace and power. For more on her life and legacy, follow @TanyaHollywood and visit @aurnonline.

Only a few rare songs ever turn into pop classics. But this one turned into a classic twice. “Killing Me Softly” not only made Rolling Stone's list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time with the 1973 Roberta Flack hit at Number 273, but also with the 1996 Fugees hit which comes in at Number 359. It's the only song on the list that appears in two different versions. On this week's episode, hosts Rob Sheffield and Brittany Spanos discuss the long-running story of “Killing Me Softly,” and how both these different versions just keep growing in stature over the years. They're joined by their brilliant Rolling Stone colleague David Browne, breaking down how a Seventies pop ballad became a Nineties hip-hop smash, and why both versions remain universally beloved.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Greeny shares a story with Jay Williams to illustrate why the NBA needs to ensure that teams honor their in-season tournament title. Robert Saleh is leaving the door open for Aaron Rodgers' return and Greeny thinks this is asinine. Bears players seem to indicate that they want Justin Fields back in Chicago next season, and Greeny and the hashtag crew discuss if the risk would outweigh the reward on that decision. We wrap up the show with stage manager Brandon explaining why he knows what song was playing when he was conceived (Killing Me Softly). Plus, the look. Learn more about your ad choices. It's not uncommon for a song to be written for one artist, only to become widely known after being recorded by another. It's less common for a song to have yet another rebirth decades later. That's just what happened with "Killing Me Softly with His Song." Originally inspired by Lori Lieberman's profound experience at a 1971 Don McLean concert, Norman Gimbel and Charles Fox's song underwent two dramatic reinventions, first by soul titan Roberta Flack in 1973, and then by Lauryn Hill and her band Fugees in 1996. In this episode, Kirk dives into all three versions, looking to better understand how each singer put her own spin on what was already a classically strong song.Written by: Music by Charles Fox, lyrics by Norman Gimbel with uncredited contributions by Lori LiebermanRecorded by: Lori Lieberman (1972), Roberta Flack (1973), Lauryn Hill & Fugees (1996)Albums: Lori Lieberman (1972), Killing Me Softly with His Song (1973), The Score (1996), A Thousand Dreams (1995), Truly (2022)ALSO REFERENCED/DISCUSSED:"She sang ‘Killing Me Softly' before Roberta Flack.
