Hello my big music lover fans! We are on our second criminally underrated Black group and this one is a personal favorite of mine.Today we are discussing the legacy of Love Unlimited, a vocal trio curated by the Maestro of Love, Mr. Barry White and consisted of sisters Glodean White and Linda James and their cousin, Diane Taylor. Their lyrics invoke a lot of conversation regarding the female audience about their desires, thoughts, and feelings when it comes to love. Listen as Kevaun talks about their history, their influence in music and fashion and so much more!Ladies, here are your flowers.

Joining hosts Philionaire, Claude Kelly and Chuck Harmony of Louis York, and Tamone Bacon, Kym pulls back the curtain on a Cleveland-to-Hollywood journey built on fearless hustle, hard-won mentorship, and a refusal to ever let the business turn her cold. The conversation winds through her earliest brushes with stardom, starting with the 1994 Pringles commercial that she famously lip-synced, the trailblazing Oh Drama! talk show that quietly set the template for every female-led panel that followed, and an iconic Parkers run alongside Mo'Nique that lit a fire under her own work ethic. Kym opens up about the wild-child energy that powered her onto a Soul Train taping on Gerald Levert's dime, into the 227 studio audience without a ticket, and into a fateful encounter with Marla Gibbs that turned a green Cleveland girl into a working actress overnight. The story of Marla pulling her into a closet on set to protect her during her power struggle with Jackie Harry is one for the books, and Kym tells every drop of it.From there, it's pure tea. Kym revisits the Next Friday slap from DC Curry that left her bruised and bleeding because no one told her she could speak up, the dominatrix scene she didn't realize was being filmed in full, the Curb Your Enthusiasm improv prep sessions with Katt Williams, Buddy Lewis, and Dave Kirchner, and the lifelong sisterhood with Sherri Shepherd that powers their NAACP Image Award winning podcast Two Funny Mamas. She shouts out the upcoming Two Funny Mamas live show at Detroit's Soundboard on Mother's Day weekend, drops gems on the late great Gerald Levert, and reflects on why the older she gets, the more profoundly grateful she is for the mentors who didn't have to put her on but did.Kym also sits in for a lively celebrity Kim showdown (pitting Lil Kim, Kim Kardashian, Kim Burrell, and Kim Fields head-to-head), helps the crew crown the legendary Marla Gibbs with this week's Esther Rolle Award of Black Excellence (The ERBE), and leaves us with what might be the unofficial Kym Whitley life motto: "You don't learn unless you ask." The plane is in the hangar. The crew is de-boarding. But the seats are still not fully in the complete upright positions. That only means that we have some more BONUS TRAX to discuss following the latest episode of SURFACE NOISE! First, would you feel comfortable selling a G+ record (or worse) online for all to see? Maybe at a record show, where you can talk through the purchase to another vinyl enthusiast, perhaps even to a friend of sorts. But to sell to (often times) a stranger....different story. Or no? To close these extra meanderings, we opine about what happened to dance programs of the youngs - from American Bandstand, to Soul Train, to Club MTV or The Grind - these shows no longer exist; does that mean young people no longer dance? Or socialize in this fashion? What about the legendary music that debuted during those programs? Another lost avenue for a band or artist to get their footing in a burgeoning career? Today on another encore episode of the Rarified Heir Podcast, we are speaking to childhood friend from youth baseball, JD Lobue Jr. as our guest today. Back in the 1970s, host Josh Mills and JD played on the Little League Dodgers team at Studio City National Little League and became fast friends in elementary school. And while he'd known about his father, JD Lobue Sn., was a television director, it really wasn't something they talked about on the baseball diamond. Cut to, oh several years later, while reading issue #59 of the ultimate rock 'n roll magazine, Ugly Things, which bills itself as Wild Sounds from Past Dimensions, that an in-depth article on the 60s Mississippi garage band The Gordian Knot caught his eye. Turns out, JD Lobue Sr. was a band member of saif Knot and after making their way west to Hollywood in the last 1960s, the band got their big break. Signing to Verve Records and recording their only album, the band befriended Nancy Sinatra, Aside from their lone LP, The Gordian Knot also became THE band to have play your swanky Hollywood party. Or in some cases, join Nancy on USO tours in Asia during the Vietnam War. All of this later lead to stints for Lobue Sr., in television after the band broke up. Starting with black dance party juggernaut, Soul Train with host and creator Don Cornelius, JD became an in demand television director. We get into all of this as well as beloved television shows like Soap, Newhart, It's A Living, Dharma & Greg and Two and a Half Men with Jr. which were just a few of his credits. We discuss life growing up in Hollywood with JD as well as a rather unique love of a sport that flew under the radar – not pun intended - in ultimate frisbee which the younger JD excelled at. We can thank garage rock from a superior music magazine Ugly Things for this episode. All it took was a Google search to bring us this episode of the Rarified Heir Podcast. Take a listen.
The Next Frequency: Where the Soul Meets the Infinite They often say that music is the mirror of the human soul. For DJ Scientifik, this album was born from a bold challenge: what if technology could help us feel even deeper emotions? Imagine a craftsman who, to carve his most personal masterpiece, decides to use a tool from the future. The Next Frequency isn't just an album "made by a machine." It is a passionate dialogue between a producer's instinct and the infinite possibilities of Artificial Intelligence. For DJ Scientifik, AI acted as an extension of his own mind—an invisible collaborator that allowed him to reach for unprecedented sound textures and harmonies that the human ear might never have dared to explore alone. Every synthesizer layer and every log drum vibration was sculpted with surgical precision to touch the most organic parts of our being. This project is proof that technology does not replace the heart; it gives it wings. It is the story of an artist using science to magnify art, creating a bridge between code and pure emotion. When you listen to this album, you won't hear algorithms. You will hear the vision of a man who utilized every tool of his era to offer you a journey toward the next musical frontier. Let yourself be carried away by the symbiosis. Discover The Next Frequency.

Les, Kurt, and Jason didn't forget about you because they took their fish oil pills, and they're here to talk about Hallmark's I'll be Seeing You! But first, Les talks about his epic birthday bash featuring celebrity appearances! Plus, Kurt recaps the Michael movie and Jason and Les are disappointed about the lack of Rebbie, Janet, and Randy (plus can we get a little justice for Tito?). And, Kurt has some Blac Chyna news you may have heard in an earlier episode. Then it's time to open up your tree poppers to take in I'll Be Seeing You starring Hallmark staple Tyler Hynes (can he get it? Vote on Threads @lifetimeofhallmarkpodcast) and two-time Tony award winner Christine Ebersol. This movie features a lot a lot of people getting into strangers' vans, but it's all part of the high-pressure super cutthroat world of patent law. Send a textHello, passionate cruisers! This is Paul and this week on The Joy of Cruising Podcast; I am delighted to welcome back Jason Venner. In a section called Specialty Cruising: Fun and Quirky, I wrote about Jason in my book Cruising Interrupted in a chapter titled, Cruise Entertainment Producer, Director, Creator, MC Extraordinaire! And Jason joined me for a podcast of that same name, way back on Episode 26.I am really happy to have Jason back. I finally got to meet him in person, first last year on the Soul Train Cruise 2025 and then again just a few weeks ago on Soul Train Cruise 2026. Jason is really good at what he does, and I thought I would have him back to get some insight specific to the Soul Train Cruise, and hear Jason contrast it with theme cruises of other genres he has hosted. Jason got his start in cruising in 2002 as a DJ with Holland America Line (HAL), a high-end cruise line owned by Carnival Corporation. At HAL, Jason progressed through the ranks from a DJ to over 10 years as a Cruise Director, to Corporate Trainer, to three years as Producer and Host of the joint ABC/BBC HAL production, Dancing with the Stars: At Sea. Since 2015, Jason has been self-employed as a Producer, Director, and Host of full-ship music charter cruises, primarily in partnership with StarVista LIVE, a leading theme cruise operator. For StarVista LIVE, Jason hosts Malt Shop Memories Cruise; Soul Train Cruise; The Country Music Cruise; Flower Power Cruise; Ultimate Disco Cruise, and more. Over the years Jason has introduced and interviewed hundreds of star performers. “It's crazy to be on a first-name basis with the legends of the music industry.”Do you have a dream car? Send a textHello, passionate cruisers! This is Paul, and this is Cheryl, and this week on The Joy of Cruising Podcast we are pleasedto present our reflections of the Soul Train Cruise 2026 we just experienced the first week of February. It was a welcome respite from a very busy last few months as I think most of you are aware we went through the process of relocating from North Carolina to Virgina. We want to preface by recalling a podcast episode we did several months ago about our top ten all-time cruises. There were two aspects of that episode that are particularly relevant to this episode about our reflections of the Soul Train Cruise on Holland America Lines Eurodam. The first relevant aspect of the all-time top list is that it was dominated by theme cruises. Any regular listener of The Joy of Cruising Podcast knows how much we're endeared to theme cruises. And readers of my first cruise book, The Joy of Cruising know I devoted an entire section of the Amazon best seller to theme cruising. The second aspect of that top ten all-time cruise list that is relevant, is that Soul Train Cruise 2025 was #4 on that list! Well listeners, I'm here to tell you Soul Train Cruise 2025 is now #5 as it has been surpassed by Soul Train 2026! Let me first give you some background. Soul Train Cruise is produced by Star Vista Live, a company that puts on a series of theme cruises each featuring differing genres including country, rock, disco, 60's music, even New Orleans inspired music. This was the 15th sailing of the Soul Train Cruise. Up until 2025, the cruise ran once per year—always sold out—in February. Beginning last year, Star Vista Live added a second sailing in the Fall. The line-up of performers for each of the Soul Train Cruises reads like a who's who to people who were fans of a certain genre of music which was popularized in homes by the groundbreaking television show Soul Train, which ran from 1971 to 2006 and was created and hosted until 1993 by the legendary Don Cornelius. Most of the acts featured on the Soul Train Cruise appeared on the television (of course many original members of the various acts have moved on or stopped performing.) So, it is no surprise that the headline acts are supplemented by more contemporary performers including stand-up comedians whose music or comedy is geared toward the demographic that makes up the bulk of the Soul Train Cruise passengers.Do you have a dream car? Welcome back to When Words Fail, Music Speaks, the show where we explore how melody, rhythm, and lyric can lift us out of the darkest moments. I'm your host, James Cox, a lifelong believer in music's healing power, and today I'm thrilled to sit down with an artist whose honesty, faith, and genre‑blending spirit make every track feel like a conversation with the soul.Meet Kenneith Perrin – a true “music mutt” who began his journey at eight, first behind a drum kit and later as a vocalist in his dad's church. From early days mimicking Soul‑Train performances to head‑lining clubs, festivals, and worship services, Kenneith's story is a testament to staying curious, staying authentic, and never letting anyone box you in.In this episode we'll:Trace his musical roots – how a bassist‑dad, a church debut, and an early love for disco, funk, R&B, and later new‑wave and rock shaped his sound.Dive deep into his 2020 pandemic anthem “Erased by Mercy.” Kenneith explains the song's raw confession of repentance, the grace he found in surrender, and why it still resounds for listeners battling doubt.Talk tour life – preview his upcoming 2026 Melodic Heart & Soul tour, from the Garden Grove Fest to Fire Forge Brewery in Greenville, SC, and how he blends intimate worship with high‑energy club gigs.Unpack his musical DNA – from MC Hammer, Sister Sledge, and Missing Persons to modern gospel, country, metal, and even guilty‑pleasure pop (Backstreet Boys, Beach Boys). He shares the moments when fans—whether in a church pew or at a Whiskey A Go‑Go—have told him his songs saved them.Reflect on faith & purpose – how his Christian walk informs every lyric, and the simple yet powerful message he hopes every listener walks away with: “You're never alone; there's always a song that can lift you up.”Whether you're a struggling artist, a music lover searching for hope, or just curious about the crossroads of faith and creative expression, this conversation offers both inspiration and practical insight. Grab your coffee (or a Bones‑flavored brew), press play, and let Kenneith's story remind you why, when words fail, music always finds a way to speak.

The Afro is one of the most iconic hairstyles of the last century. And one of its main ingredients was a hair product – Afro Sheen. But Afro Sheen did so much more than make Black afros shine. It was the money behind the television show Soul Train, it helped fuel the civil rights movement – all because of an entrepreneur named George Johnson. For decades, Joan and George Johnson owned and ran Johnson Products Company, a Black hair care company out of Chicago. Their intimate understanding of what Black people wanted and needed – for their hair and for their lives – helped grow the Black middle class and became an engine for Black culture and power. They helped turn the Black haircare industry into what is now a multi-billion-dollar industry. But although they helped create this industry, they no longer have a part in it. Today on the show – the story of the rise and fall of Johnson Products. We're gonna tell you this story in three hairstyles. The conk, the afro… and the jheri curl. Episode 82 of She Said It First, titled “Cardi Said It’s Up Forever,” is a full-on comedy sermon where Jerrilyn Lake (aka Indeskribeabull) and Lynee’ Monae trade laughter and life lessons like verbal jabs at a roast. In What Irritated Me This Week, the ladies go in on “sit-down air” — yes, that mysterious funk cloud that follows certain people when they hit a chair. Between jokes about “thunderclap ghosts” and hygiene horror stories, the two deliver a PSA wrapped in pure foolishness: wash your whole body, not just the parts you can see. In Girl, What Happened, the duo dives into the messy world of celebrity beefs, starting with Ray J’s claim that Beyoncé disrespected Brandy — because apparently, family loyalty runs thicker than logic. They unpack everything from old Soul Train shade to Cardi B’s “we got beef forever” energy, ultimately deciding that some people confuse “beef” with “irrelevance.” The conversation somehow spirals (as only She Said It First can) into Netflix’s explosive Diddy documentary, where the ladies drag everyone from enablers to jurors smiling too hard for the camera. “Nothing surprises us anymore,” they say — not even the idea of Diddy renting eight getaway cars or possibly a submarine. By the end, things lighten up with talk of Thanksgiving food fatigue and overhyped family gatherings. From calling out folks who overshare about celebrity drama to roasting people who bring the same dry mac and cheese every year, Jerrilyn and Lynee’ prove once again that no topic is too sacred to clown. Whether it’s hygiene, holidays, or hip-hop scandals, Episode 82 reminds us that these two are equal parts hilarious and holy — dropping jokes so sharp they could carve the turkey. It is an honor and a privilege to welcome music producer and songwriter Toby Gad to the first Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast Holiday Special! Toby began his career in the late 1980s, when he and his brother Jens had three of their songs featured on controversial music duo Milli Vanilli's European debut and multi-platinum album, All or Nothing. Because of the songs' success, Milli Vanilli's producer Frank Farian produced the brothers' 1990 debut album, NRG. That same year, Toby met Jacqueline Nemorin, and a 10-year collaboration began with 1992's Creole Dance and continued with 1995's Mission of Love and the title song for Neverending Story III. Following success in Germany, Toby left for the United States. He opened Strawberrybee studio in Midtown Manhattan and co-wrote “Unspoken” with Madeline Stone and O. Hatch for Christian platinum artist Jaci Velasquez. The song stayed on the Christian Billboard Top 20 Singles chart for half a year. In 2003, Toby produced and co-wrote “A Toast to Men” for Willa Ford, and two years later, developed, produced, and co-wrote Kaci Brown's Interscope Records debut, Instigator. He also produced and co-wrote songs for Ricky Martin and the Veronicas. In 2008, his career shifted into high gear after Fergie released a song they co-wrote, “Big Girls Don't Cry.” The song went 4x platinum and peaked at the number one position on the US Billboard Hot 100. He also co-wrote and co-produced Beyoncé's “If I Were A Boy,” which went 2x platinum and peaked at number three on the US Billboard Hot 100. He continued to write massive hits for Calum Scott (“No Matter What”), Demi Lovato (“Skyscraper”), Jessie J (“Who You Are”), Josh Groban (“River”), Leona Lewis (“Fire Under My Feet'), and Madonna (“Bitch, I'm Madonna” and “Living for Love”). One of his massive hits was John Legend's “All of Me,” which earned RIAA's 13x Diamond (Highest Certified RIAA Single in History) and won Grammy, Soul Train, and NAACP Awards. Recently, Toby Gad released his first holiday studio album, Piano Diaries Christmas. The album features original songs co-written with an all-star group of recording artists. Anthony Gargiula, Gavin James, Huntley, Joelle James, Jordin Sparks, Loren Allred, Marisha Wallace, Sam Ryder, and Victoria Justice are some of the talented vocalists who are featured on the record. When he is not in the recording studio, Toby is also the host of the Songs You Know Podcast. In each episode, Toby and his guests uncover the tales, creative processes, and moments of magic that brought iconic songs you know and love to life. Previous guests include Billy Steinberg, Jessie J, Josh Groban, Justin Tranter, Lindy Robbins, Loren Allred, and Marisha Wallace. On the 2025 holiday special, Toby Gad talked about his songwriting sessions with Beyonce and Demi Lovato, writing “All of Me” with John Legend, the moment he swore at the Queen of Pop, and previewed Piano Diaries Christmas. In this episode of the Underground Lounge, Lou and Spank sit down with comedy legend Alex Thomas for a conversation that feels like a masterclass in culture, comedy, and survival. Alex takes the guys back to his childhood in South Central Los Angeles, where he was bused 40 minutes each day to become the first Black student at an elite Beverly Hills private school, an experience that shaped both his identity and his sense of humor. He talks about being raised by two supportive parents who kept him too busy for the streets, the reality of growing up surrounded by violence, and how staying active in sports, music, and after-school programs helped him avoid the fate of so many childhood friends. The conversation shifts into his early dance career, including how he became a breakout talent on Soul Train, his relationship with Rosie Perez, and the pivotal moment when the Wayans family encouraged him to try stand-up.Alex breaks down the unbelievable week where he bombed a major dance audition, got rained on with $60,000 in cash by Damon Wayans, booked his first-ever Hollywood audition, and accidentally landed one of the most iconic McDonald's commercials of the '90s.The episode goes even deeper when Alex talks about eventually writing for The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, how Will Smith discovered him on stage at the Laugh Factory, and what it was like to be the only non-Philly member of a creative team that turned into a brotherhood.Throughout the conversation, the guys touch on parenthood, the differences between public and private school, keeping kids safe in today's world, and what it means to break generational cycles. Packed with laughs, real-life gems, hip-hop history, comedy stories, and authentic Underground Lounge energy, this episode is a must-watch for anyone who loves a good origin story rooted in hustle, culture, and heart.

First up, BET has officially suspended both the Soul Train Music Awards and the BET Hip‑Hop Awards. Executives are citing the need to reimagine their place amid today’s changing media landscape. This doesn’t necessarily mean they’re gone forever, but the shift signals a new chapter for Black music television. On the political front, President Trump is ramping up pressure on Washington, D.C., threatening to deploy federal law enforcement—including the National Guard—and potentially strip the city of its home rule following an assault on a staffer. In legal drama, Diddy’s lawyers have raised alarm over what they call inhumane conditions at Brooklyn's Metropolitan Detention Center.
