This week Ang is joined by Vanessa White, an accredited relationship and divorce master coach who specialises in domestic abuse. Vanessa thought she was happily married. But, when she came to the realisation that she was in fact in an abusive relationship her life fundamentally changed. After finding the courage to leave the relationship and the strength to move on, Vanessa decided to become a relationship coach to help people that were experiencing what she herself had experienced. In this interview with Ang, Vanessa talks about types of abuse, how to spot it, how to safely leave a relationship and how life can go on once you are free. KEY TAKEAWAYS Vanessa, who herself has gone through a divorce, reflects on what she learned from the process, and details how learning to put yourself first can shape not only your future as an individual but as a partner in new relationships. The majority of people that are in abusive relationships don't know they're in abusive relationships. Through her own experience, Vanessa recounts how she finally realised her partner was abusive and the mental and emotional turmoil that resulted due to this revelation. Even after you leave your abusive partner the abuse can, and many times does, continue. Vanessa details the ways in which abusive behaviour can manifest post divorce, the warning signs to look out for and how to get the right help from the right people. If you have children then they too will suffer from the fallout of an abusive relationship. Vanessa, who has four children, discusses the approach she took to both protect her children and to make sure that their upbringing would be safe and healthy. BEST MOMENTS “Don't abandon your own needs. No strong, healthy relationship can be built on that foundation.” “Find somebody that wants to be with you for you.” “The tragedy of abuse is that the person that is supposed to be loving you the most is the one that is hurting you.” EPISODE LINKS www.vanessawhite.co.uk e-mail coaching@vanessawhite.co.uk www.linkedin.com/in/vanessawhite https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100094770073631 www.instagram.com/vanessawhitecoaching https://www.instagram.com/doireallyhatemen/ https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61558725612414 www.tiktok.com/@angallanburns www.linkedin.com/in/angallanburns e-mail ang@doireallyhatemen.com ABOUT THE PODCAST Do I Really Hate Men? Preaching for Easter Sunday, Dr. C. Vanessa White offers a reflection on the power of women's voices proclaiming the Good News then and now: "If women doubt their value, this telling and retelling of the resurrection story reaffirms the power of a women's voice - for it was Mary's voice that first testified to the Resurrection and whose story continues today...On this day, can we, like Mary, run and share the news of Jesus' presence in our world? In spite of our doubts and fears, do we have the strength, the fortitude, the faith to go out like Mary and the disciples and share the news that Jesus has risen? This Good News can change our hearts and change the world, if only we believe." Dr. C. Vanessa White is Associate Professor of Spirituality and Ministry as well as the Director of the Certificate in Black Theology and Ministry at Catholic Theological Union. She received her Doctor of Ministry and Master of Theological Studies degrees from Catholic Theological Union, with additional post-graduate work at Xavier University of Louisiana and Loyola University Chicago. I'm so excited to bring to you the first episode of the THIRD season of the podcast! I'm honored to be joined by Nat, the amazing co-host of Not Your Average Netizens and Soju Chronicles. As a long-time member of Team Sats, the Saturdays' fandom, she's helping us get to know each of the girls and walking us through their four full-length albums as well as their EP Headlines, which was also their American debut. Corrections/Clarifications: I didn't include the Sugababes in the British girl group ranking, but there was no shade intended. They're just a group that I haven't gotten into. Nat is 1st-generation Jamaican-Canadian, so she was able to offer some much-needed insight on the Sean Paul debacle. We think Vanessa is absolutely gorgeous! It's unfortunate that fatphobia and racism in the industry negatively affected her career and mental heath. Cheers to (and justice for) Vanessa White! after this past weekend's rather anticlimactic exhibition bout between Mike Tyson and Roy Jones Jr., I convened this show's production staff to attempt to determine which was the most memorable celebrity boxing encounter of all-time. ?As you would expect, there were nominations for Joey Buttafucco vs. the late Joanie “Chyna” Lauer, Manute Bol vs. William “Refrigerator” Perry, and most controversially, S-Club 7's Hannah Spearrit vs. The Saturdays' Vanessa White, but after several recounts, the (narrow) winner was the 1996 clash betwixt skateboarding's Simon Woodstock and Suicidal Tendencies' Mike Muir. Though the fight itself is not considered a wonderful advertisement for the sport, it was commemorated with the custom skateboard shown above, recently auctioned by Southeby's for $17milllion US??DThis week's show does not feature interviews with Woodstock or Mike Muir because I would like to respect their privacy. There is however, some music.

This time, we have food entrepreneur and pierogi queen Vanessa White back for a discussion about life during COVID-19, running a small business and what the post COVID world might look like. Vanessa is co-owner of Jaju Pierogi—now sold in stores all over New England. I think there’s no better way to view the business world than through the eyes of a small business or startup owner. We learn what life has been like the past six months. And we get a glimpse into the effort it takes for a small business to get shelf space. The life of a small business person is full of stress, so Vanessa shares some of the stresses she sees every day and how she deals with them. The post-COVID world will be here soon and Vanessa has some thoughts on that as well. Vanessa used to work for me, and it has been great seeing her build her business from scratch. Overall, a very appetizing discussion about food and more.

Dr. C. Vanessa White is Associate Professor of Spirituality and Ministry as well as the Director of the Certificates in Pastoral Studies and Black Theology and Ministry at Catholic Theological Union. If I asked you to define what it means to practice self-care and self-love what would you say? The key to all “practices” is you decide what they mean for you. For example, my definition of self-care could be wildly different from yours and neither of us would be wrong. When I sat down with Vanessa White, known as Olanikee Osi, the CEO and Founder of Goddess Detox Inc., and SelfishBabe, I asked her to define self-care, self-love and what it means to be selfish. I also asked her why she thought so many women struggle with the idea of being selfish and asked her what we could do to change that. Listen in as Olanikee and I dive into the topic of selfishness and discover new ways you can embrace “being selfish” to enhance your self-care, self-love and overall health and wellness. This episode is brought to you by the Selfish Babe app, the place women can turn to to learn how to selfishly and authentically love themselves as well as a place to turn to for self-love resources. DOWNLOAD NOW: Apple App Store CLICK HERE Google Play Store CLICK HERE About Olanikee (Ola-Nee-Kay) Olanikee is the CEO and Founder of both Goddess Detox Inc. and SelfishBabe – two brands dedicated to self-love. She’s a self-love manifestor who helps women around the world, including herself, develop ways to love themselves by being more selfish and authentic in their lives. She also believes if you truly want something you can get it – you just have to make it happen. How Do You Define Selfish? As women, many of us struggle too much with the idea of being selfish. But one of the things I believe most is that nothing has meaning except for the meaning we assign it. For example, when people think about the word selfish, they often think of it in terms of lacking consideration for others. This is what you’d find in the dictionary. But I always encourage people to go deeper, and when I thought about what it meant to be selfish, I saw concern for one’s own personal profit or pleasure. “Being selfish is about being honest with yourself and truly loving yourself. Self-love is selfish.” – Olanikee Osi Olanikee believes too many women struggle with the idea of being selfish because society tells us as women that we need to be taking care of others in order to feel fulfilled. In other words, we’re taught to nurture other people like we would the baby dolls so many of us grew up caring for. Be Unapologetically Selfish Self-love is about more than going to the nail salon or spending an hour in the bath. It’s about your mindset, and it’s about understanding and committing to putting yourself first. For the SelfishBabe app, Olanikee knew she wanted to create something where women could feed their mind and change their mindsets. She wanted to motivate them and give them the push they needed to take action on their ideas. “Me choosing myself is going to be the best decision for both of us.” – Olanikee Osi Many of you know my story – how I lost everything in the recession and ended up sleeping on my brother’s couch. But what you don’t know is a couple of years later he needed to borrow money and I said no. My family couldn’t believe it, but I knew what I was being called to do and I knew if let him borrow all the money I’d saved, I wouldn’t be able to do the things I needed to do. In other words, had I not taken that moment to be selfish and to put myself first, then I would have let myself down. And people may not get it in the moment, but it’s not for them to get. It’s for us to start to stand up and be unapologetically selfish. This Ain’t Ya Mama’s Self Help The SelfishBabe app uses choice language, but what I always tell people is, “You can’t miss the message because you get caught up in the minutia.” For me, I love my Christian music, but I also love my Snoop Dogg – to me, the app is a bit like that. It’s a safe space for young women and it meets them where they are in life and in a way that feels good for them. Olanikee agrees and said she created the app the way she did because personal development doesn’t have to look any one way. She wanted it to feel like your friend was talking to you, and wanted it to be relatable, fun and something that would get you engaged. “The SelfishBabe app is the home-girl who’s going to boost you up and be real with you at the same time.” – Olanikee Osi SelfishBabes are learning to selfishly love themselves. They get daily affirmations sent to their phone and whether they say them out loud or not, they read them and that plays into the subconscious mind telling them they can do this. Are you ready to be more selfish? What’s one thing you would do right now for yourself? Share with us in the comments.
