The Canes fell to the Islanders in double overtime as Matt Barzal's second goal of the game pushed the series to a Game 5 in Raleigh. Barzal's deflection of a Robert Bortuzzo shot from the blueline 84 seconds into the second overtime kept the series going. Seth Jarvis and Stefan Noesen bookended power play goals around Barzal's first goal of the series and a Jean-Gabriel Pageau power play goal as the teams were even at 2 after regulation. Frederik Andersen and Semyon Varlamov combined for 77 saves as both goaltenders were excellent. Game 5 is Tuesday at PNC Arena
Frederik Andersen's 29 saves highlighted the Hurricanes 3-2 win on Long Island. Andrei Svechnikov had two primary assists as the Hurricanes built an early lead and held on for the win. Carolina has a 3-0 lead in the best-of-seven series with Game 4 coming Saturday afternoon in New York. Brent Burns opened the scoring with his first goal in the last 20 games. His shot from the blue line deflected off the stick of NY defenseman Mike Reilly and got past Ilya Sorokin for a 1-0 lead in the first. About 6 minutes later, Svechnikov's pass found Dmitry Orlov who beat Sorokin for a 2-0 lead. Andrei would also set up Sebastian Aho's second goal of the series as the Canes made the score 3-1 in the middle of the second. But the story was Andersen who is now 3-0 in the postseason having allowed 6 goals on 77 shots (.922 SV%). Andrei's 4 points (4 assists) lead Carolina in scoring this postseason.
The Canes scored 5 unanswered goals, rallying from a 3-goal deficit, to beat the Islanders, 5-3. The Hurricanes lead their best-of-7 series 2 games to none heading to game 3 on Long Island on Thursday. Teuvo Teravainen's 2nd period power play goal got the Canes on the board and then Seth Jarvis, Sebastian Aho, Jordan Martinook and Jake Guentzel each tallied in a 4-goal, 3rd period onslaught. Jarvis' 1st of the playoffs made it 3-2 with about 9 1/2 minutes remaining. Aho's 1st of the playoffs came with Carolina's net empty and 2:15 left on the clock. Martinook then hounded the Islanders on the ensuing face off and scored into a gaping net 9 seconds later for the 4-3 lead. Guentzel's empty net goal sealed the win.
Frederik Andersen's 33 saves carried the Carolina Hurricanes to a 3-1 win as they grabbed the opening game of their best-of-7 Eastern Conference quarterfinal series with the New York Islanders. Evgeny Kuznetsov scored the opening goal within the first two minutes to give Carolina the 1-0 lead. His power play goal snapped a 14-game goal drought. He would add an assist on Stefan Noesen's 3rd period goal that put the Canes in front to stay. Noesen, too, ended a long goal drought having not scored in the last 20 games of the regular season. As it turns out, the last time Noesen scored was against Montreal on the night that Andersen made his return to the lineup on March 7. Coincidentally, that goal was also the eventual game-winner. Martin Necas added an empty net goal to close out the scoring. Game 2 is Monday night at PNC Arena
The Canes didn't have a lot to play for in their 6-3, season-ending loss to the Blue Jackets. They couldn't finish first and couldn't lose ground in the Eastern Conference standings, so they rested 8 starters, including half of their top 6 defenders. They also started Spencer Martin in goal, his first action since the end of February. In addition, the Canes played three rookies who just finished up their college seasons. Only real downside was the 2nd period injury to Jesper Fast who crashed into the boards and didn't return. Carolina opens up the playoffs this weekend against the New York Islanders at PNC Arena.
The Carolina Hurricanes picked up their third straight win, 4-1, over the Boston Bruins. The win pulled the Hurricanes within 3 points of the Rangers in the Metro as New York lost to the Islanders on Tuesday. The win also pulled Carolina even with the Bruins for the second best record in the East and since the Hurricanes own the tie breaker if they were to finish tied in points, the Canes would have home ice in an Eastern Conference Finals meeting with Boston. Andrei Svechnikov scored for the second straight game -- lacrosse style -- to open the scoring in the 2nd period. Teuvo Teravainen, Jake Guentzel and Seth Jarvis also scored for the Hurricanes, with Jarvis coming shorthanded and effecitvely ending the game. It was his 30th goal of the year. Pyotr Kochetkov made 22 saves in the win.
Andrei Svechnikov only missed one game, but the Hurricanes had been wihtout the real Andrei for the last several weeks. 17 seconds into their game with Columbus, Andrei scored past Malcom Subban and the Hurricanes were off and running in a 3-0 win. Sebastian Aho and Teuvo Teravainen also scored and Frederik Andersen made 23 saves for his 3rd shutout since returning to the lineup at the beginning of March.
Sebastian Aho and Martin Necas scored third period power play goals as the Canes rallied from a 2-goal first period deficit to beat the Caps, 4-2. Jake Guentzel scored twice, the first coming with 5:30 left in the second period to finally get one past Washington goaltender Darcy Kuemper. Then Guentzel capped the scoring into an empty net running his total to 5 goals since coming to the Hurricanes. Pyotr Kochetkov made 14 saves on the night.
The Bruins scored 3 times in the first 11 minutes and the Hurricanes never recovered. Brad Marchand, David Pasternak and Danton Heinin scored as the Canes were a defensive mess in their first game in 5 days. Jake Guentzel's 3rd goal with the Hurricanes, on the power play, made it 3-1 in the second period, but Carolina couldn't get any closer. The Canes will host the Capitals on Friday at PNC Arena.
Pyotr Kochetkov stopped all 26 shots in the Canes' 3-0 win in Montreal as Carolina went over the 100-point mark for the 3rd straight season. Their 101 points trail only the Rangers' 104 in the Eastern Conference. Jordan Staal snapped a scoreless tie in the 2nd period with a shorthanded goal, Carolina's 10th on the season. Staal's 9th goal of the season snapped a 15-game goal drought. Sebastian Aho scored a power play goal to make it 2-0, it was his 33rd goal of the season. Aho added an assist on a Seth Jarvis empty net goal, meaning that Sebastian now has a career high 85 points on the season with 7 games left to play. The goal was Jarvis' 29th. Jake Guentzel had 2 assists and has 16 points (2g, 14a) in 11 games with the Hurricanes.
Sebastian Aho and Seth Jarvis each had a goal and 2 assists as the Canes beat the Red Wings to clinch their 6th consecutive postseason bid. The Hurricanes scored all 4 of the their goals in the 2nd period. Aho got the first one. Then he fed Seth Jarvis for a power play goal 57 seconds later. Martin Necas and Brady Skjei also scored in the win. Freddie Andersen's second shutout of the season ran his streak to 7 wins with just 8 goals allowed since returning to the lineup.
Former Hurricanes goaltender Alex Nedeljkovic stopped 39 shots as the Canes fell to the Penguins in Pittsburgh, 4-1. Dimitri Orlov scored Carolina's only goal in the 2nd period when his drive from above the left face off circle was deflected by a Penguins forward and beat Nedeljkovic to tie the game at 1. The loss, coupled with the Rangers win over the Flyers at Madison Square Garden saw the Hurricanes slip to 3 points behind New York with just 9 games left to play. Carolina hosts Detroit on Thursday at PNC Arena.
Frederik Andersen's 31 saves led the Hurricanes to a 2-1 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs as the Canes swept the season series (3-0-0) from Toronto for the first time since 2014-2015. Brady Skjei scored 1:05 into the game and Sebastian Aho added his 31st goal of the season -- on the power play -- later in the first period and Andersen made it stand up. Carolina is within 1 point of the Rangers for the Metro lead with 10 games left in the season. Carolina will next play Tuesday night in Detroit.
Sebastian Aho's 8th career hat trick couldn't get a win in Washington as the Caps survive in shootout, 7-6. Aho's third of the game, with Carolina's net empty, sent the game into overtime. Seth Jarvis scored his 27th of the season on the power play. It was the sixth straight game with a goal for Jarvis. Jaccob Slavin and Brady Skjei each scored as well. Skjei doing so in his 600th career NHL game. Carolina's normally reliable penalty kill allowed three Washington power play goals.
Seth Jarvis ran his goal streak to 5 straight games with an overtime game-winner to give the Canes a 3-2 win over Philadelphia. Jarvis has 6 goals in the streak and 4 of them were game-winners. Frederik Andersen has won all five of his starts since returning to the lineup. He's allowed just 7 goals in those starts, with 1 shutout and a .947 save percentage. Jordan Martinook and Jalen Chatfield also scored for the Hurricanes who have now won 5 straight games. Carolina's magic number to clinch a playoff spot is 9. Any combination of 9 points earned by the Hurricanes or not earned by Washington will clinch a postseason spot for the 6th straight year. Carolina plays in Washington Friday night.
Seth Jarvis scored the game's first two goals, Jake Guentzel had a goal and two assists, and Pyotr Kochetkov stopped 29 shots as the Canes beat the Islanders 4-1. The win pulls Carolina within 2 points of the Rangers in the Metro. Brady Skjei had 2 assists. It was Necas 13th goal in 26 games since returning from injury.
Dmitry Orlov scored twice and assisted on two other goals as the Hurricanes bombed the Senators in Ottawa, 7-2. Orlov scored the game's first goal on a 1st-period breakaway, then added his 2nd goal of the game to blow open the game early in the 3rd to make it 5-2. Jordan Martinook and Seth Jarvis scored in the 2nd period, cutting a 3-0 Toronto lead to 3-2. Jarvis' goal was on the power play and came with 2.7 seconds left in the period. Then, Sebastian Aho scored twice in the final minute and a half including the game-tying goal with 7 seconds to play. Brent Burns drive from the left face off circle was redirected by Aho and we went to OT. Carolina's Penalty kill was 4 for 4. they scored twice on the power play. Andrei Svechnikov and Teuvo Teravainen each scored into an empty net and the Canes completed a season sweep of New Jersey. Pyotr Kochetkov made 23 saves in the win.
Frederick Andersen's first game in more than 4 months was a 4-1 win over Montreal. He made 24 saves, played almost 2 minutes without a stick and was named the game's 1st star after missing the last 50 games due to a blood clotting condition that could have ended his career. Brady Skjei helped his teammate celebrate with a pair of gorgeous goals and Carolina gained two points on the idle NY Rangers who were off Thursday night. Before the game, the team opted to hold Michael Bunting out of the lineup due to the fact that he was part of the trade that sent Jake Guentzel to Carolina. That trade is official.
The Hurricanes took a 3-0 lead into the 3rd period against Winnipeg Saturday afternoon, but one bad goal allowed by Pyotr Kochetkov was enough to rattle him and the group couldn't protect him enough in a 5-3 loss to the Jets. Martin Necas, Teuvo Teravainen and Sebastian Aho each scored in the second half of the second period to give the Canes a 3-0 lead heading to the 3rd, but Kyle Connor's quick shot from just inside the blue line caught Pyotr Kochetkov by surprise 96 seconds into the period and that was enough to unnerve the Canes rookie goalie. Four minutes later the game was tied and Carolina would fall, 5-3, as Winnipeg completes the season sweep.

Tony DeAngelo scored inside of 3 minutes to give the Canes the lead. It was his first goal since December 15th and just his 3rd of the season. Martin Necas scored on the power play with just over 5 minutes left in regulation. But, neither lead was safe for a Hurricanes team that was clearly mentally tired from a grueling week.

Pyotr Kochetkov made 14 saves, but couldn't prevent Jason Robertson and Wyatt Johnston from scoring as the Stars sweep the 2-game season series from the Canes. Kochetkov made two huge saves in overtime on Tyler Toffoli withj the second leading to Aho and Martin Necas combining on the game-winner.
Martin Necas had a natural hat trick in the first period, and then the weird stuff happened. Both goalies played. Teuvo Teravainen had four assists. And the penalty kill was a perfect 6 for 6 against one of the best power plays in the sport. Oh, and there was a goal without a goal. It was crazy.
The Hurricanes scored the first goal, but Vancouver scored the last. JT Miller's freebie, early in the second period held up for the 3-2 win.
