In Episode 347, the season finale of the Glass and Out Podcast, we revisit our conversation with the head coach of the Stanley Cup champion Carolina Hurricanes, Rod Brind'Amour. Back in 2019, Brind'Amour was just in his second season as head coach of Carolina and fresh off leading a young Canes team to its first playoff appearance in nine seasons. Fast forward to today, and he is now a Stanley Cup champion as both a player and a coach. This was one of our favourite episodes of all time, and we thought it was the perfect way to honour Brind'Amour and his incredible journey. A special thank you to everyone who tuned in this season. We can't wait to get back at it in September for Season 10! Listen as he shares why it's important to think like a player as a coach, how to get creative when delivering your message, and why coaches should avoid looking in the rearview mirror. Carolina Hurricanes head coach Rod Brind'Amour missed out on the Hockey Hall of Fame class of 2026. He's been eligible for over a decade now. How close is he to making the list? How does his coaching resume impact the decision? WRAL sports investigative reporter Brian Murphy and Louis Fernandez talk through the process and where things go from here.
Boomer and Rhett are joined by TSN's Jamie McLennan for a fascinating debate on whether Rod Brind'Amour belongs in the Hockey Hall of Fame based on what he has accomplished to this point in his career. After winning a Stanley Cup as a player and now leading the Carolina Hurricanes to a Stanley Cup as head coach, Rod the Bod has built one of the most unique résumés in modern hockey. The guys discuss whether his playing career alone was Hall of Fame worthy, how much his success behind the bench should factor into the conversation, and whether voters should be looking at the total body of work rather than separating his accomplishments as a player and coach. Noodles weighs in on where Brind'Amour ranks among the game's most respected hockey minds and whether he has already done enough to earn a place in the Hall. If the vote happened today, would Rod Brind'Amour be getting your vote? Send us Fan MailThe Carolina Hurricanes are about to throw a parade twenty years in the making. Layton and Ethan open with the scale of it — over 100,000 fans expected in downtown Raleigh this Saturday, a city that's been partying nonstop since the Cup came home, and a fanbase that somehow manages to unite NC State, UNC, Duke, and Wake Forest fans under one roof at Lenovo Center. But this isn't really a hockey episode. It's an episode about why the Canes' championship run matters to the Wolfpack too.It starts with a number. Rod Brind'Amour — now the first player-turned-coach to win a title with the same franchise since 1956 — wears 17 for Carolina. Philip Rivers wore 17 for NC State. Neither connection was planned, but as Layton puts it, numbers have a funny way of working themselves out. From there, the episode digs into Justin Gainey's full-circle moment — the same man who scored the first basket ever in what's now Lenovo Center back in the late 90s is the one who rang the ceremonial siren before Game 1 of the Canes' first-round series, and is now NC State's head coach in that very building. Then the story turns to Carter-Finley Stadium, where the Canes hosted a Stadium Series outdoor game against Washington in 2023 — complete with the NC State marching band, Mr. and Mrs. Wolf, and Wolf hands thrown up mid-celebration. Ethan calls it one of the best live sporting events he's ever attended. Just days later, the Frozen Finley college hockey game drew over 25,000 fans, completely overwhelming the merchandise table. The episode closes on the practical stuff that actually matters for NC State's future — the $300 million Lenovo Center renovation now accelerating because of the Cup run, the $1 billion of development planned around the arena, and why playing home games in a real professional arena has quietly been one of NC State basketball's best recruiting tools for years. And finally, the big debate: would an NC State men's basketball national championship draw a parade anywhere close to the size of what the Canes are getting this weekend? Ethan isn't so sure — but he'd love to find out.Tuffy Talk is NC State's home for sports talk, hot takes, and everything Wolfpack. New episodes every Monday at 8:30 PM ET on YouTube. Carolina closed out the Stanley Cup Final in convincing fashion, with Games 5 and 6 reinforcing that the Hurricanes were simply the deeper, fresher and better team. Jordan Staal became the oldest Conn Smythe Trophy winner in NHL history at 37, a fitting choice for a club defined more by leadership, detail and teamwork than star power. Eric Tulsky’s roster-building philosophy was on full display throughout the run, identifying specific roles and targeting players whose underlying numbers fit them perfectly. Goaltending was once again a major storyline, as Frederik Andersen battled through injury and Brandon Bussi stepped in brilliantly late in the series, though Staal’s decision to hand the Cup to Andersen first spoke volumes about his importance to the group. The post-game celebrations produced memorable moments for the Staal brothers and Seth Jarvis, while Rod Brind’Amour’s fingerprints were everywhere—from the culture built over eight years of organizational consistency to the symbolic 35-pound block players lift after training sessions. Watching Brind’Amour celebrate with the Cup felt like a reunion with an old friend, capping a championship that was years in the making.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
The Stanley Cup Final is over, and now all eyes turn to what could be a crucial offseason for the Ottawa Senators. In this episode, we first break down Carolina's championship run, discuss what's next for John Tortorella and Rod Brind'Amour, and look at Jordan Staal's impressive playoff performance as he ages like fine wine.We also dive into the Sens' offseason outlook, including the challenge of taking the next step when the prospect cupboard is so thin, and you're not a popular free agent destination. We discuss how the Senators should approach the NHL Draft, highlight two prospects we like who could be available at No. 32, and react to Ottawa's first move of the offseason: the signing of a Norwegian forward who helped beat Canada at the Worlds.
Three massive sports stories in one episode, and all of them happened within hours of each other. The New York Knicks are NBA Champions for the first time since 1973, and it is one of the best franchise turnaround stories in recent NBA history. I break down how they built this team, what made them so hard to beat, and why Jalen Brunson has cemented himself as one of the greatest Knicks of all time. Plus, what the Spurs need to learn from this loss heading into what should be a fascinating offseason. Then breaking news mid-recordin: John Tortorella is out in Las Vegas. The Golden Knights fire the coach who saved their season and took them to the Stanley Cup Final. I break down whether it is the right call, what it means for Vegas heading into the offseason, and who might be next behind the bench. And the Carolina Hurricanes are Stanley Cup Champions for the second time in franchise history. Rod Brind'Amour gets his ring. Freddie Anderson gets the cup first in one of the most emotional moments of the entire playoffs. And Vegas runs out of steam against a team that was simply better, fresher, and more cohesive when it counted most. I break down what made Carolina so dominant, going 16-3 in the playoffs, and what this means for the NHL going forward. In This Episode:Intro (0:00)NBA Finals Reaction (0:41)Torts Fired (9:40)Stanley Cup Final Reaction (15:19)Outro (26:56)

Two of the biggest games in sports are happening right now, and there is a lot to break down.Victor Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs walked into Madison Square Garden and delivered another mature veteran performance to pull within one game of the New York Knicks in the NBA Finals. The Spurs are doing something genuinely extraordinary, and I break down exactly what made Game 3 so impressive, and why the Knicks need a serious adjustment before Game 4 if they want to close this thing out at home. Then I turn to the Stanley Cup Final and the massive question hanging over Carolina heading into Game 4 in Las Vegas tonight. The goaltending decision feels like a no-brainer to me, and I make the case for why Rod Brind'Amour has to make the change. Plus, Mitch Marner has been brilliant for Vegas, and I push back on some of the narrative around him that I think has gotten a little out of hand. This is genuinely one of the best stretches of sports in recent memory. Two incredible Finals. Two massive games coming up. Let's break it all down.

Montreal looked completely overmatched in Game 4 as Carolina dominated 43-18 in shots and continued to suffocate the Canadiens with their structured, relentless style. At times, the Hurricanes exposed the inexperience of Montreal’s young core while showing the payoff of eight years of organizational consistency under Rod Brind’Amour. Despite four straight home losses and a noticeably quieter Bell Centre, the playoff run is still providing valuable experience for the Habs’ future. Meanwhile, Vegas stunned Colorado with a sweep, continuing an incredible run under John Tortorella while piling up goals and benefiting from the Avalanche battling injuries and inconsistent performances. Colorado still feels like a contender moving forward, though looming front-office uncertainty, limited cap space and foot-speed concerns may lead to bigger questions about the franchise’s direction in the near future. Mitch Marner’s playoff success after leaving Toronto for Vegas has also become a major storyline, with Leafs fans frustrated watching him thrive in a deeper lineup where he no longer has to carry the team every night.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Montreal dropped a tough OT decision to Carolina as Andrei Svechnikov scored the winner for a 2-1 series lead, with Lane Hutson publicly taking responsibility for a giveaway that led to the OT goal. Rod Brind’Amour’s team-first mentality continues to define the Hurricanes and Martin St. Louis now faces the challenge of keeping the Canadiens focused on tightening up defensively — particularly clearing the zone and protecting the middle of the ice — rather than dwelling on one play. Out West, Vegas has stunned Colorado with a 3-0 series lead as injuries to Nathan MacKinnon, quiet performances from several Avs stars and stronger goaltending from the Golden Knights have tilted the series heavily. Mark Stone’s impactful return in game 3 arguably overshadowed the hype around Cale Makar’s comeback. Coaching chatter continues as John Tortorella’s future remains uncertain despite a potential championship run, with Ryan Craig viewed as Vegas’ eventual successor. Meanwhile in Colorado there’s growing speculation about sweeping organizational changes if the Avalanche are eliminated as early as tonight.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Montreal stunned Carolina 6–2 in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Final, swarming the Hurricanes with four first-period goals and exposing signs of rust after Carolina’s 12-day layoff, as Rod Brind’Amour admitted his team wasn’t ready for the Canadiens’ pace, long stretch passes and relentless transition game. Cole Caufield’s quick response goal after Carolina scored 33 seconds in shifted momentum immediately, as the Canes aggressive play allowed Montreal to repeatedly generate breakaways. Carolina will need a bounce-back in Game 2, especially from Frederik Andersen and a Jacob Slavin, who struggled through a difficult night. Out West, Vegas opened with an upset win over Colorado thanks to a stellar performance from Carter Hart and the massive absence of injured Cale Makar, whose uncertain status now looms over the series. John Tortorella appears energized in his new role with Vegas after recognizing Philadelphia needed a different voice for its rebuild. Discussion then turns to the Maple Leafs’ coaching search, with the suggestion that Toronto should think beyond short-term fixes and consider talented but inexperienced candidates from the AHL and NHL assistant ranks.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The Florida Panthers are headed to their third straight Stanley Cup Final after rallying past Carolina in Game 5, continuing the state of Florida's Eastern Conference dominance. Carter Verhaeghe scored the winner, showcasing the value of patience and great scouting. An awkward handshake moment between coaches Paul Maurice and Rod Brind’Amour sparked debate about who belongs in the post-series tradition. In the West, the Oilers prepare for Game 5 against Dallas with Mattias Ekholm expected to return from injury but Zach Hyman is likely out for the remainder of the playoffs. Evander Kane and Corey Perry could see increased icetime to try and offset the loss of Hyman as they have both impressed so far in these playoffs. On this episode the boys are joined for the second time by perhaps the greatest passer our sport has ever seen, Adam Oates. With over 1,400 points, 1000+ being assists, it's no surprise to see Oatsey use his incredible mind as a skills coach after his NHL career. He talks to us about what Connor Bedard should work on, passing up scoring chances (how many goals he could've had), what makes Kucherov great, Nylander going at Marner, plus so much more. Before the interview, the boys get into the Oilers going down 2-1 to Vancouver, what Rod Brind'Amour's future in Carolina is, some questionable hits, and much more. We'll get into some Stanley Cup Playoffs stuff as well, including Rod Brind'Amour's future in Carolina. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
