Today, Jason Gregor and Frank Seravalli continued their division preview series with a fresh episode of The DFO Rundown. Today's episode focused on the Central Division, which saw a handful of teams that made some major offseason changes. Before they got into that, they welcomed a new partner into the show: Fountain Tire. That led to some questions that Frank had about how winter tires work up in Canada. They also talked about the news of James Van Riemsdyk signing in Columbus. Frank says it's the first of a few expected moves by the Blue Jackets. They kicked off the division preview by talking about the Chicago Blackhawks. What are expectations for Connor Bedard? How many rookies will be in the lineup? Did GM Kyle Davidson handle the offseason correctly? They answer all of those questions. They then jumped into the NHL's newest franchise: the Utah Hockey Club. GM Bill Armstrong had a pretty busy offseason as he basically revamped their entire blueline. Will that along with a collection of young forwards be enough to push them into the playoffs? Also, could their new home give the players a boost? They also hit on the St. Louis Blues and Minnesota Wild, who were both on the outside of the playoff picture last year. Neither made massive waves over the summer and are banking on internal improvement. The guys broke down whether or not that was the right play.Tyler then jumped in for a new edition of Fill in the Blank, where he asked the guys about Mikko Rantanen's next deal, Utah's look heading into year one, and the chances of their being four 100-point teams in the division. To wrap it up, they went through the four playoff teams from last year, starting with the Nashville Predators, who spent big in free agency and brought in Steven Stamkos, Jonathan Marchessault, and Brady Skjei. Winning the offseason doesnt always translate to winning in the regular season, could that be the case in Nashville? They then moved on to the Winnipeg Jets, who are running it back once again with the same core group of players. Then there's the Dallas Stars and Colorado Avalanche, who are both once again looking like the class of the division.4:20 - News of the week (JVR in CBJ)6:40 - Chicago Blackhawks15:55 - Utah Hockey Club23:23 - Minnesota Wild32:15 - St. Louis Blues39:30 - More offer sheets coming?42:30 - Fill in the Blank49:00 - Nashville Predators56:30 - Colorado Avalanche1:01:00 - Winnipeg Jets1:07:25 - Dallas StarsWant to hear more from Frank, Jason and the entire DFO team? Dan and Shawn discuss a potpourri of offseason moves and start by talking about the splash made by the Nashville Predators, who signed Steven Stamkos, Jonathan Marchessault and Brady Skjei on July 1. Does this make the Predators the best team in the Central Division and a real Stanley Cup threat? They wonder why the Lightning did not re-sign Stamkos, instead opting to sign Jake Guentzel. They hit on the Maple Leafs and their main moves, including signing Chris Tanev and Oliver Ekman-Larsson to bolster their defense. Does it make the Maple Leafs better? If so, how much better? They discuss the Boston Bruins signing Elias Lindholm and Nikita Zadorov, and why both are perfect fits. They also talk about the Carolina Hurricanes and the hit they took on July 1. They banter about Jake DeBrusk's seven-year contract with the Vancouver Canucks and the Seattle Kraken hiring Jessica Campbell to be the first female assistant coach on the bench.
Riley and Derek start the hockey talk by congratulating the Florida Panthers on winning the Stanley Cup over the Edmonton Oilers. They jump to the Flyers offseason with Matvei Michkov getting out of his KHL deal and signing with the Flyers, who he may play with, and how many points he could put up. Outside of Matvei they discuss Philly re-signing Garnet Hathaway and Erik Johnson, buying out Cam Atkinson, and not retaining Carter Hart's signing rights. Jumping across the league they start off with the Steven Stamkos saga, the Lightning adding Jake Guentzel, extending Victor Hedman, trading Mikhail Sergachev, and the Nashville Predators being aggressive bringing in Jonathan Marchessault and Brady Skjei. Heading over to Carolina they talk about a couple former Flyers Shayne Gostisbehere and Sean Walker joining the Hurricanes, Patrick Kane staying in Detroit, Jakob Chychrun questionable trade to the Capitals, Shane Pinto re-signing in Ottawa, and Sean Monahan going to the Blue Jackets. Moving along they discuss the Blackhawks busy offseason and Patrick Maroon (35:06), Kevin Hayes being traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins, and Anthony Stolarz signing with the Toronto Maple Leafs. Finishing up the news segment, Riley and Derek go over what the Oilers and Panthers have done so far this offseason. They recap the Stanley Cup Final, the Oilers being able to force Game 7, the Panthers almost having the worst choke in NHL history, Bobrovsky coming up clutch, and more. After that they discuss a couple noticeable picks from the 1st round of the 2024 NHL entry draft. After the draft they're looking towards a couple of Michkov props for next season, brought to you by bet365. Finishing off the show they answer fan submitted questions presented by Klyr Rum. Sebastian Aho and Seth Jarvis each had a goal and 2 assists as the Canes beat the Red Wings to clinch their 6th consecutive postseason bid. The Hurricanes scored all 4 of the their goals in the 2nd period. Aho got the first one. Then he fed Seth Jarvis for a power play goal 57 seconds later. Martin Necas and Brady Skjei also scored in the win. Freddie Andersen's second shutout of the season ran his streak to 7 wins with just 8 goals allowed since returning to the lineup.
Frederik Andersen's 31 saves led the Hurricanes to a 2-1 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs as the Canes swept the season series (3-0-0) from Toronto for the first time since 2014-2015. Brady Skjei scored 1:05 into the game and Sebastian Aho added his 31st goal of the season -- on the power play -- later in the first period and Andersen made it stand up. Carolina is within 1 point of the Rangers for the Metro lead with 10 games left in the season. Carolina will next play Tuesday night in Detroit.
Sebastian Aho's 8th career hat trick couldn't get a win in Washington as the Caps survive in shootout, 7-6. Aho's third of the game, with Carolina's net empty, sent the game into overtime. Seth Jarvis scored his 27th of the season on the power play. It was the sixth straight game with a goal for Jarvis. Jaccob Slavin and Brady Skjei each scored as well. Skjei doing so in his 600th career NHL game. Carolina's normally reliable penalty kill allowed three Washington power play goals.
Seth Jarvis scored the game's first two goals, Jake Guentzel had a goal and two assists, and Pyotr Kochetkov stopped 29 shots as the Canes beat the Islanders 4-1. The win pulls Carolina within 2 points of the Rangers in the Metro. Brady Skjei had 2 assists. Martin Necas scored a power play goal with 1.1 seconds left in the first period that probably ended the competitive portion of the game. It was Necas 13th goal in 26 games since returning from injury.
Frederick Andersen's first game in more than 4 months was a 4-1 win over Montreal. He made 24 saves, played almost 2 minutes without a stick and was named the game's 1st star after missing the last 50 games due to a blood clotting condition that could have ended his career. Brady Skjei helped his teammate celebrate with a pair of gorgeous goals and Carolina gained two points on the idle NY Rangers who were off Thursday night. Before the game, the team opted to hold Michael Bunting out of the lineup due to the fact that he was part of the trade that sent Jake Guentzel to Carolina. That trade is official.
Brady Skjei scored a goal and assisted on another, Spencer Martin remained unbeaten in goal, and the top lines started doing top line things as the Canes beat Columbus, 4-2. Teuvo Teravainen and Sebastion Aho staked the Hurricanes to a 2-0 lead in the first half of the second period. Then, just after coming out of the penalty box, Brady Skjei scored a one-handed breakaway goal for Carolina's third goal of the second period. Seth Jarvis scored into an empty net late in the 3rd for the final marker.
