JR and Tim discuss the upcoming NHL playoffs and Ovechkin's chances of breaking Gretzky's goal-scoring record. It's Friday afternoon, the boys are back from Vegas, meaning a fresh episode of Oilersnation Radio is set and ready to send you into the weekend. On today's show, we discussed Thursday's win over San Jose, the loss of Leon Draisaitl, playoff line combinations, and much more. The boys started the Friday episode of ONR with a delicious debate about some of the nonsensical plays that happened in the NHL this past week. Starting with Niko Mikkola's fine for shooting the puck at an opposing player, the guys wondered whether the fine was worthy of the action or if he should have been punished more heavily. We then discussed the ridiculous Jalen Chatfield takedown of Connor McMichael in a fight and how he did not face discipline for such a dangerous play.Changing gears, we looked at Viktor Arvidsson's recent success and how he now has goals in three straight games. Given how the expectations placed on him were sky-high, having him start to pop goals with under 10 games left is a welcomed sight among the fanbase. And since players like Arvy are starting to heat up, we discussed how the the line combinations may look as bodies get back in the lineup. Needless to say, the coaching staff will have some very difficult decisions to make. Finally, the guys wrapped up the Friday episode of the podcast with another round of betting talk and Hot and Cold Performers to recap the last week of our lives. Whether it was the Nation Vacation to Las Vegas, having players heat up at the right time, or the opportunity to keep winning games despite losing the team's two best players, there was plenty to discuss on the Friday episode of ONR. On Hour 3 of The FAN Morning Show, Ben and Brent are joined by ESPN's Greg Wyshynski to discuss the Maple Leafs' special teams production this season, the perception of the Leafs south of the border, the teams currently vying for a Wild Card berth in the Eastern Conference, and the NHL's decision not to suspend Jalen Chatfield for his takedown on Connor McMichael. Afterwards, Chris “Mad Dog” Russo (25:23) stops by to chat about Vladimir Guerrero Jr.'s potential suitors in free agency, why he doesn't believe the Mets will pursue Vlad, Aaron Judge's red-hot start to the season, and the current landscape in the AL East. To kick off today's edition of the DFO Rundown, Jason and Frank talked about last night's wild finish between the Washington Capitals and Carolina Hurricanes. There were over 140 penalty minutes in the game, but the moment that had everyone talking was Jalen Chatfield's takedown of Connor McMichael during their fight. Did Chatfield go too far and could he face supplemental discipline? The guys debated that. From there, they talked about whether or not this Hurricanes team is built well enough to go on a deep playoff run. They also talked about the Maple Leafs heading into the playoffs and the Boston Bruins free fall in the final month of the season. That led to some draft talk and Frank has some ideas on how the league can improve the draft process. With the changes coming to the way that the NCAA allows players in, Frank thinks that now is the perfect time for them to change how the draft works. He explained his thought process and the trickle down effect that it would have on other leagues while Gregor poked some holes in his ideas.Tyler then popped in for a new edition of Fill in the Blank, where he asked the guys about the Art Ross trophy, Mitch Marner's next contract, and the Cup Contender that they're least bullish on.To wrap, Gregor talked about Gavin McKenna's remarkable run in the WHL and where he could play next season. Here's our too-early San Jose Sharks' off-season plan!***Quick aside, Keegan's microphone is muffled a bit this episode. We're sorry, everyone! One day, we'll have pristine audio every single time. But not this day. This is kind of like those workplace accident signs where they knock off 100 days since the last accident and replace it with zero. Again. Sigh.***This week, Sheng and Keegan outline some potential off-season moves that could help make the 2024-2025 version of the Sharks be less embarrassing than this year's. (53:45)But before all that, we have a few quick-hitting topics this week (1:15). We start with Will Smith watch: Is he signing or not? (2:30)Sheng and Keegan preview the upcoming May 7th Draft Lottery odds and each run a simulation at Tankathon. Do the Sharks win? (6:10)We highlight what Sheng has heard about some potential candidates for Sharks head coach. (13:15)John McCarthy and the rest of the San Jose Barracuda coaching staff will be returning next season, despite some poor on-ice results. Why do Sheng and Keegan support their return? (29:30)The Sharks want goaltending coach Thomas Speer back, even after David Quinn was let go. (37:21)Finally, we revisit our pre-season bold predictions...how did Sheng and Keegan do? (42:20)Finally, our off-season plan! Which of their free agents should the Sharks keep or let go? Who should they target in the free agency market? Can they make a good trade? (53:45)How much cap and roster space could the San Jose Sharks have? (54:45)Which of the Sharks' UFAs and RFAs will they keep? Who should they allow to walk? (57:45)What's the order of positional need for San Jose this summer? (1:14:33)Let's talk to free agents first -- Sheng has a couple intriguing longshot UFA targets. (1:22:14)Keegan offers a longshot UFA signing at defense. (1:35:55)Then, Keegan shares his favorite lower-end UFA targets. (1:39:00)Sheng has a former Sharks defenseman in mind. (1:41:30)Finally, Keegan offers some forward UFAs with some upside. (1:46:10)That's free agency, how can the San Jose Sharks improve via trade? (1:58:24)Keegan proposes a Mikael Granlund trade. (1:58:44)Going back, Sheng discusses why the Mikey Eyssimont trade was such a mistake, and how the thinking behind the deal helped pave the way for a disastrous 2023-24. (2:03:30)What should Grier's trade philosophy be this summer? (2:16:25)Sheng is prioritizing distressed assets – who are a couple defenseman that the Sharks could target via trade? (2:17:55)How about a trio of center candidates? (2:20:51)Are the San Jose Sharks a better team with a couple of these realistic additions? (2:32:05) ★ Support this podcast ★
Seth Jarvis ran his goal streak to 5 straight games with an overtime game-winner to give the Canes a 3-2 win over Philadelphia. Jarvis has 6 goals in the streak and 4 of them were game-winners. Frederik Andersen has won all five of his starts since returning to the lineup. He's allowed just 7 goals in those starts, with 1 shutout and a .947 save percentage. Jordan Martinook and Jalen Chatfield also scored for the Hurricanes who have now won 5 straight games. Carolina's magic number to clinch a playoff spot is 9. Any combination of 9 points earned by the Hurricanes or not earned by Washington will clinch a postseason spot for the 6th straight year. Carolina plays in Washington Friday night.
Dmitry Orlov scored twice and assisted on two other goals as the Hurricanes bombed the Senators in Ottawa, 7-2. Orlov scored the game's first goal on a 1st-period breakaway, then added his 2nd goal of the game to blow open the game early in the 3rd to make it 5-2. Former Capitals teammate and BFF Evgeny Kuznetsov also scored, as did Seth Jarvis, Jalen Chatfield, Jake Guentzel, and Brendan Lemieux. Sebastian Aho had 3 assists. Freddie Andersen made 30 saves for his 4th straight win since returning to action.
Sebastian Aho, Andre Svechnikov and Teuvo Teravainen combined for 8 points in the Canes 7-2 win over the Calgary Flames. Aho set up Jordan Martinook for the first goal, scored the second after a Flames turnover and then set up Svechnikov to make it 4-0 early in the 2nd period. Jalen Chatfield and Seth Jarvis each had a goal and an assist. Frederik Andersen turned aside 17 shots for his second win since returning from the injured list. Brent Burns also scored for the Hurricanes, snapping an 8-game goal drought.
Five different players scored goals, the penalty kill went 4 for 4 and Pyotr Kochetkov made 30 saves as the Canes beat Arizona, 5-1. Jordan Martinook scored 16 seconds into the game and the Hurricanes never trailed. Jalen Chatfield, Seth Jarvis, Teuvo Teravainen and Michael Bunting scored in the win. Jack Drury and Martin Necas had two assists each and the Canes move within 6 points of the first place Rangers in the Metro.

The Hurricanes couldn't hold a 2-goal lead -- twice -- and lost to the Predators, 6-5, in the first of 3 straight games on home ice. Stefan Noesen and Tony DeAngelo scored 1st period power play goals as the Canes led 2-1 after 20 minutes. From there the game became wide open and Carolina's defending and goaltending let them down. Antti Raanta allowed 6 goals on 30 shots in the loss. Sebastian Aho, Jalen Chatfield and Martin Necas also scored, with Marty, and Noesen also adding assists. Michael Bunting also had 2 assists on the night.

The Carolina Hurricanes suffered an overtime loss to the New York Islanders in spite of out-shooting New York by nearly 3-to-1! Carolina put 43 shots on Isles' goalie Symeon Varlamov, and scored 4 times. But, New York got five past Pyotr Kochetkov on just 16 shots on goal. A week ago the Hurricanes saw the Lightning score 8 on just 14 shots. Jalen Chatfield, Jordan Staal, Jack Drury and Sebastian Aho all scored as the Hurricanes failed in their attempt to win their 3rd straight game.
The Carolina Hurricanes rallied from a 3-0 second period deficit to defeat the New York Islanders, 4-3, in overtime. Sebastian Aho's 2nd goal of the year sent them back to Raleigh with 4 of 6 points on a 3-game road trip. Jalen Chatfield's 1st goal of the season came just 32 seconds after the Islanders scored to make it 3-0 and started the comeback. Dimiti Orlov also scored his first of the year -- and first in a Carolina uniform -- followed by Jesperi Kotkaniemi's 5th as the Canes rallied to set up Aho's extra time heroics. Antti Raanta made 22 saves in the win.
Every team in that is looking to draft USC football QB Caleb Williams in the 2024 NFL Draft should also be looking hard at UNC football QB Drake Maye, and why some teams might prefer Maye out of North Carolina football. Also, the Carolina Hurricanes had a comeback win, 6-3, over the San Jose Sharks. Tim Donnelly & Dennis Cox discuss if Jalen Chatfield needs to be playing over Tony DeAngelo on defense, and what the injury prognosis is for Sebastian Aho & goalie Freddie Andersen.
The Carolina Hurricanes begin their preseason schedule against Tampa Bay Lightning tonight, and Tim Donnelly & Dennis Cox discuss the biggest storylines to start the season for the Canes, including if Tony DeAngelo or Jalen Chatfield will be the No. 6 defenseman this season. Plus, The NCAA approved the waiver request for Minnesota DB Craig McDonald despite McDonald being a two-time transfer. Tim Donnelly points out how the situation isn't very dissimilar to UNC WR Tez Walker, who had his waiver denied by the NCAA, and how the NCAA has no consistency when it comes to decisions.
Carolina Hurricanes defenseman Jalen Chatfield joined Tim Donnelly in studio to discuss his journey through the junior hockey in the OHL, minor league hockey in AHL, and into the NHL as a full-time player with the Canes, making the roster out of training camp, and his future with the Canes and the NHL. Also, Chatfield shared his thoughts on the trade rumors surrounding the team, competing for ice time, how much better the defense can be with the additions of Dmitry Orlov and Ton DeAngelo, if he's thought about a contract extension with the Hurricanes, and being loved by his teammates and the Raleigh community.
Do Vancouver Canucks fans have reason to be mad that they lost Jalen Chatfield for nothing? Cory Lavalette from The Athletic recently reported that the Carolina Hurricanes might be okay to Brett Pesce because they have former Canuck Jalen Chatfield who could step up into a top-four role. The Canucks let Jalen Chatfield walk away as an unrestricted free agent in 2021. He signed with the Carolina Hurricanes on the second day of free agency. Matthew Tkachuk's second straight overtime goal beat the Carolina Hurricanes, 2-1 on Saturday night giving the Florida Panthers a 2-0 series lead heading back to Sunrise for Game 3 on Monday. Tkachuk scored on the power play less than 2 minutes into overtime for the win. But, it was probably Carolina's power play that really did in the Hurricanes. The Canes had three chances wtih the man advantage and each started out fine, but fizzled amid a sea of poor passing. And, in the second period, about a minute after Aleksander Barkov came out of the penalty box, he was left alone in front of the Canes' net and he beat Antti Raanta to tie the score. Raanta made 24 saves in the loss, his second straight hard-luck loss in the playoffs. Raanta was also in net for Carolina's 3-2 loss to the Islanders in Game 5 in the opening round. Jalen Chatfield scored the Hurricanes only goal at 1:43 of the first period, redirecting a Sebastian Aho pass through Sergei Bobrovsky for a 1-0 lead. Bobrovsky has stopped 100 of 103 Hurricanes shots in the series for a .971 save percentage.
The Hurricanes played well, but were victim to a couple of costly mistakes in a 3-2 loss at PNC Arena in Game 5. The series now shifts back to Long Island for Game 6 on Friday night. Brent Burns and Jaccob Slavin combined on a 1st period miscue that ended up on Pierre Engvall's stick and he slid the puck underneath the left pad of Antti Raanta for a 1-0 lead. Then, New York got a fortunate bounce as an Engvall shot deflected off the face of Sebastian Aho and fell to Brock Neslon at the side of the goal. Nelson batted the puck in out of the air for a 2-0 lead. Paul Stastny brought a goal back on a deflection of a Jalen Chatfield point shot. But, the Isles restored the 2-goal margin late in the 2nd period after Martin Necas had the puck stolen from him at the blue line leading to a Matt Barzal goal. Sebastian Aho closed out the scoring midway through the 3rd on a beautiful pass from Seth Jarvis but Carolina couldn't find the equalizer.
Carolina scored three times in the 3rd period and beat the Rangers at Madison Square Garden, 3-2. The Canes twice rallied from a 1-goal deficit, the second time coming just 18 seconds after falling behind 2-1. Stefan Noesen's first goal in 16 games brought Carolina even at 2 and set the stage for Teuvo Teravainen's 11th of the season. Jalen Chatfield also scored for Carolina, his 6th of the year and his 2nd in as many games at MSG. The Canes lead the Metropolitan Division by 2 points after the Devils lost in overtime, 2-1, at home to the Wild. Carolina reaches 100 points for just third time in franchise history. And, they do so with 13 games still to play. They'll meet the Rangers on Thursday at PNC Arena.

The Carolina Hurricanes gave up the first goal but scored the next five in a 5-2 win over the Minnesota Wild. Frederik Andersen was stellar for the second straight start and Carolina once again got tons of offensive production from the blue line in the win. But, all excitement was lost when Max Pacioretty went down with a non-contact injury to his lower right leg, the same one that has his surgically repaired achilles. Pacioretty, the pure goal-scorer this team has craved has only played in 5 games for the Canes this year after being acquired from Vegas in the summer. The Hurricanes got goals from Brent Burns, Brady Skjei and Teuvo Teravainen in the 2nd period, and then Jalen Chatfield and Martin Necas in the 3rd. For Skjei, his power play goal gave him 10 on the season -- a career high. Teravainen's goal came shorthanded and snapped an 8-game goal drought. The Hurricanes will next be on the ice on Saturday on Long Island against the Islanders.

Freddie Andersen made 34 saves as the Carolina Hurricanes beat the Pittsburgh Penguins, 2-1, Saturday night at PNC Arena. In fact, Andersen was so good that only he could score into his net. Rickard Rakell's 3rd period power play goal was really more of an epic gaffe by Andersen. About 50 seconds into a 3rd period power play, Penguins star Sidney Crosby lofted a puck high into the air towards the Carolina net. Andersen gloved it but rather than accept a defensive zone face off he tried to flip it up in the air with his glove and bat the puck out of the zone. Alas, the puck was redirected by Rakell into the net for the goal -- the only one Pittsburgh would muster Saturday night. Brady Skjei and Jalen Chatfield each also scored for Carolina who will host Vancouver Sunday afternoon at 5:00
Frederik Andersen's first start in almost 10 weeks was the panacea the Hurricanes were looking for. Andersen returned from a lower body injury to make 21 saves and posted a start-to-finish solid game in net for the Canes as they ended the 4-game losing streak with a dominant, 6-2 win over the Blue Jackets. The first five goals came from the blue line as Brett Pesce scored twice, Brent Burns, Jaccob Slavin and Jalen Chatfield added goals -- with Chatfield's coming shorthanded -- and Seth Jarvis broke through after an 11-game goal drought to close out the scoring.
The Carolina Hurricanes' 11-game winning streak came to a halt at Madison Square Garden last night as the Rangers rallied with three 3rd period goals in a 5-3 win. Artemi Panarin, K'Andre Miller and Filip Chytl turned a 3-2 deficit into a 5-3 win as the Canes also saw their 17-game streak with at least a point come to an end. Brent Burns, Martin Necas and Jalen Chatfield all scored for Carolina which lost in regulation for the first time since the day before Thanksgiving. Pyotr Kochetkov made his first start in 2 weeks and suffered his first regulation loss since that November 23rd game at home against Arizona. The Hurricanes will get back on the bike Thursday at PNC Arena when they welcome in Nino Niederreiter and the Nashville Predators.
The Hurricanes stretched their point streak to 13 games with a 4-3 OT win over the Penguins in Pittsburgh. Jordan Staal's wrap around goal with less than five minutes left in regulation helped send the game into OT. And, once there, Jaccob Slavin finished off a great pass from Seth Jarvis for the win. On the play, Brent Burns recorded the 800th point in his career. In all, Carolina got two goals and four assists from the blue line including Jalen Chatfield's first. Chatfield was bumped up in the lineup due to the absence of Brady Skjei who missed the game for personal reasons. That also allowed Dylan Coghlan to jump back into the team and he posted a pair of assists. The Hurricanes will host the Flyers Friday night at PNC Arena.
Matt, Alex, and Brandon take a few minutes to talk about how good Sebastian Aho is, consider Jalen Chatfield's Hurricanes future, and discuss the Hurricanes' back to back ejections.
