Boomer, Pinder and Rhett discuss one of the more fascinating goalie situations heading into the offseason as Frederik Andersen prepares to hit free agency after helping lead the Carolina Hurricanes to the Stanley Cup Final. Andersen was outstanding throughout Carolina's playoff run, posting incredible numbers and playing a massive role in getting the Hurricanes within reach of a championship. But when the Final was on the line, Carolina turned to Brandon Bussi, who seized the opportunity and backstopped the Hurricanes to three straight wins. With Bussi under contract and Andersen now set to test the market, the guys debate what kind of contract the veteran goalie could command, whether Carolina should try to bring him back, and if a team like the Edmonton Oilers could make sense as a destination. They also discuss how NHL teams should evaluate Andersen's incredible playoff run compared to the way his season ended and whether he remains one of the best goaltending options available this summer. On hour one of Flames Talk, Pat Steinberg and Logan Gordon are joined by NHL.com Deputy Managing Editor Adam Kimelman to get you set for draft week, which is now just days away. The conversation dives into the biggest intrigue points heading into Buffalo, how the top of the draft could shake out, and why San Jose going Chase Reid at number two makes sense. Kimelman also weighs in on Vancouver's potential decision between Caleb Malhotra and Ivar Stenberg, the narrowing gap at the top of the class, and why Carson Carels is a strong fit for the Flames at sixth overall, along with a few other intriguing names to watch. (29:17) Pat and Logan react to the Carolina Hurricanes capturing the Stanley Cup with a series win over Vegas. The guys share their takeaways from the Final, discuss Freddie Andersen's incredible run, debate the Conn Smythe choice, and look at what Carolina's championship says about roster construction — including the value of smaller centres — before wrapping with a few offseason predictions. In this episode, we talk all about different things we've seen from the goalies in the Finals, particularly Freddie Andersen and Brandon Bussi. We discuss good things we've seen from them, as well as some ways we think they could be better. We talk about how sliding out of the net led to the unfortunate overtime goal in Game #3, and why sliding out of the net is rarely a good idea. Then, we give a small preview about why watching hockey is important for goalie development, and discuss one of our favorite goalies to watch that you may not yet know about. In this Summer Coolers edition of NHL Wraparound, hosts Neil Smith and Vic Morren break down the Carolina Hurricanes' offseason, their consistent regular season success, and the lingering concerns that have prevented them from reaching the Stanley Cup Final—despite three Conference Final appearances in the last seven years. The Canes finished second in the Metro Division with 99 points in 2024–25 and made quick work of New Jersey and Washington before falling to Florida in five games in the Eastern Conference Final—again.Neil and Vic analyze the team's latest acquisitions, including the high-profile signing of Nikolaj Ehlers from Winnipeg, and the trade for K'Andre Miller from the Rangers. They also examine what's lost with the departures of Brent Burns, Dmitry Orlov, and Scott Morrow, and how the defense corps now leans heavily on Jacob Slavin, Alexander Nikishin, and Jalen Chatfield. The episode also features a fascinating side story: Rod Brind'Amour's son Skyler Brind'Amour and Keith Primeau's son Caden Primeau are now teammates—23 years after their fathers were traded for each other.IN THIS EPISODE:[00:00] Summer Coolers intro: Carolina Hurricanes outlook[00:36] 2024–25 season recap: Regular season strong, playoffs stalled[01:10] Forwards set: Ehlers, Aho, Jarvis, Svechnikov, Blake, Martinook[02:00] Defense changes: Miller in, Burns, Orlov, and Morrow out[03:00] K'Andre Miller's fit and the high cost of acquisition[03:43] Goaltending concerns: Freddie Andersen, Pyotr Kochetkov, Caden Primeau[05:00] Re-signings and RFA updates: Suzuki, Skyler Brind'Amour, Stan Coven[06:00] The Brind'Amour–Primeau trade connection, 23 years later[06:50] Jacob Slavin's leadership and Shane Gostisbehere's PP role[08:00] Are the Hurricanes truly better than last year?[09:00] Why Carolina dominates the regular season but stalls in May[10:30] The need for playoff-style hockey to break through[11:00] Final verdict: Metro favorite—but Cup contender?KEY TAKEAWAYS:Carolina remains one of the NHL's most consistent regular-season teams, but hasn't been able to convert that into a Stanley Cup Final appearance.Nikolaj Ehlers' signing adds another skilled forward, but may not be enough to change the team's playoff identity. The defense is in transition, with Burns and Orlov gone and K'Andre Miller's growth now a key variable.Goaltending remains a concern, and a major question mark heading into 2025–26.Carolina must learn to play playoff-style hockey earlier—and more consistently—if they hope to get over the hump.RESOURCE LINKS:YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCgBj1LV0-DMfBhcRPSJZLjAX: https://twitter.com/NHLWraparoundNeil Smith: https://twitter.com/NYCNeilVic Morren: https://www.linkedin.com/in/vic-morren-7038737/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/nhlwraparound/TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@nhlwraparoundFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61555451139787#NHL #Hockey #Podcast #K'AndreMiller #NikolajEhlers #SebastianAho #AndreiSvechnikov #SethJarvis #JacksonBlake #TaylorHall #JordanMartinook #LoganStankoven #JordanStaal #K'AndreMiller #ScottMorrow #MikeReilly #CaydenPrimeau #SkylerBrind'Amour #FrederikAndersen #EricRobinson #RyanSuzuki #RodBrind'Amour #KeithPrimeau #BrentBurns #DmitryOrlov #PyotrKochetkov #AlexanderNikishin #JaccobSlavin #JalenChatfield #ShayneGostisbehere #SeanWalker #EricTulsky

Locked On Blue Jackets - Daily Podcast On The Columbus Blue Jackets
The Blue Jackets looked lifeless against the Hurricanes last night, but it's to be expected. Malcolm Subban was surprisingly good, and the youth did their best but couldn't solve Freddie Andersen. Plus, it's a mailbag day, so we're talking the biggest offseason question for the Jackets, would I trade Elvis and Provorov for a first round pick if we had to retain salary, which RFAs would I re-sign this offseason, and who the Blue Jackets should draft at 4th overall!Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!Factor MealsGet started on your resolutions with Factor, so you're ready for the new year. Sebastian Aho and Seth Jarvis each had a goal and 2 assists as the Canes beat the Red Wings to clinch their 6th consecutive postseason bid. The Hurricanes scored all 4 of the their goals in the 2nd period. Aho got the first one. Then he fed Seth Jarvis for a power play goal 57 seconds later. Martin Necas and Brady Skjei also scored in the win. Freddie Andersen's second shutout of the season ran his streak to 7 wins with just 8 goals allowed since returning to the lineup.
Dmitry Orlov scored twice and assisted on two other goals as the Hurricanes bombed the Senators in Ottawa, 7-2. Orlov scored the game's first goal on a 1st-period breakaway, then added his 2nd goal of the game to blow open the game early in the 3rd to make it 5-2. Former Capitals teammate and BFF Evgeny Kuznetsov also scored, as did Seth Jarvis, Jalen Chatfield, Jake Guentzel, and Brendan Lemieux. Sebastian Aho had 3 assists. Freddie Andersen made 30 saves for his 4th straight win since returning to action.

North Carolina, like a lot of us on a cold, winter night, went to sleep a little early…. -They were in the process of blowing out Louisville, twice, but did enough to allow the Cardinals to hang around frittering away big leads. -In the end, it was a comfortable, 17 point win. -Make no mistake, the Cards are bad and the Heels are a FF caliber squad, so if you want to read into all of that, I think it’s a mistake. -But, it’s a lesson at the least. -Davis, 21-6-6 4/7 3s -Bacot 19-7-5 -Jaylen Withers, 15-10 in 24 minutes -Carolina shot 10/22 from deep and 48% overall with 19/29 assisted fgs….so? -Cards shot it well, and if they didn’t commit some careless turnovers maybe we have a different story. Bacot had three blocks. He passed Warren Martin for fourth most by a Tar Heel with 191. • Bacot passed Virginia’s Ralph Sampson for fourth all-time in ACC history in rebounds. Bacot has 1,5 Bill Belichick is heading into his second interview with the Atlanta Falcons… -Can’t decide if it’s more odd that he’s going in for a second interview or the state reasons why Atlanta is looked at as maybe the second best situation behind the Chargers. -It’s an easier division to win. -Excuse me? As expected, the Dallas Cowboys are staying the course and keeping Mike McCarthy as head coach. -On one hand, they’ve won 12 games in each of the last 3 years and twice won the NFC East. -On the other hand, they’ve not advanced past the divisional round and are 1-3 in the playoffs under McCarthy. -But, Jerry Jones’ history has been patience when it comes to the head coaching spot. Jason Garrett got 8 full seasons. I don’t know what the Eagles will do. I think there’s enough good from Nick Siriani to keep him, though the assistant coach drain might have been an issue this year. -Decision-making was suboptimal Monday night -But, coming out of their locker room now are comments about the switch of DCs mid-stream and how difficult it was to deal with. Like having two marriages. -That second one, especially since it made them worse, is the fireable offense. Hurricanes back on the practice ice today….everyone but Pyotr Kochetkov (and Freddie Andersen, of course) -Two more home games…
Tim Donnelly says that the Carolina Hurricanes still need to address their goalie situation because there are too many unknowns with Freddie Andersen dealing with blood clotting issues, and with Pyotr Kochetkov in NHL concussion protocol. Donnelly says that the Hurricanes are one bad injury away with Antti Raanta to having to turn to Yaniv Perets, who just made his NHL debut against the LA Kings in relief for Raanta.
Griff and AB are back for Session 21 to try to make sense of the past week where the team went 2-0-2, earning points in 4 straight games. Every team in that is looking to draft USC football QB Caleb Williams in the 2024 NFL Draft should also be looking hard at UNC football QB Drake Maye, and why some teams might prefer Maye out of North Carolina football. Also, the Carolina Hurricanes had a comeback win, 6-3, over the San Jose Sharks. Tim Donnelly & Dennis Cox discuss if Jalen Chatfield needs to be playing over Tony DeAngelo on defense, and what the injury prognosis is for Sebastian Aho & goalie Freddie Andersen.
In honor of the holiday weekend, Chris Lea & Dennis Cox during a four-of-a-kind discuss what you need for a holiday weekend. They also run through the latest sports headlines with Hit It & Quit It including the ESPN layoffs, NHL free agency, peek viewership for the 2023 NHL Draft, top NBA free agents, including Harrison Barnes agreeing to a three-year extension with the Kings, and more. Also, NHL free agency begins at midnight, and we expect to see a flurry of activity over the weekend. We haven't seen much from the Carolina Hurricanes ahead of free agency regarding goaltenders Freddie Andersen and Antti Raanta being re-signed. Should there be a cause for concern?

The Carolina Hurricanes did everything Monday night except score a goal and as a result their 1-0 loss to the Florida Panthers pushed them to the brink of elimination. Florida leads the series 3 games to none with Game 4 on Wednesday night at FLA Live Arena. Sam Reinhart's second period power play goal was the only marker on the night and Sergei Bobrovsky's 32 saves were all the Panthers needed to move within one game of their second ever Stanley Cup Finals appearance. Bobrovsky has now stopped 132 of 135 shots on goal in the series, a save percentage of .978. Freddie Andersen stopped 16 of 17 Florida shots in the loss.
Was Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Final between the Florida Panthers and Carolina Hurricanes ever going to end? Both Sergei Bobrovsky and Freddie Andersen put on amazing performances in front of their respective nets. Throughout the extra periods of play, the Hurricanes had their chances, but just couldn't finish them. Dennis Cox & Brian Murphy discuss if they'll be any carryover from this game into the rest of the series. Also, Dennis & Brain get a "vibe check" from Hurricanes fans on how they handled the game last night.

-Canes Game 2 - -Akira Schmid back in net for the Hurricanes; Timo Meier will be a game-time decision (missed Game 1) … Freddie Andersen to start in net tonight -Centennial Authority Meeting … extended deal with negotiator
It was the proverbial mixed bag for the Hurricanes in their 4-3 shootout loss to the Bruins at PNC Arena. Freddie Andersen made a boatload of excellent saves in the game, including back to back robberies of Tyler Bertuzzi and David Krejci late in the3 3rd period. However, all three goals he allowed could be put in the "soft" file. But, the Canes got a point anyway thanks to early 3rd period goals from Brady Skjei (16th) and Sebastian Aho (33rd). What it means is that the Hurricanes have a 3-point lead in the Metropolitan Divisioin over the New Jersey Devils with a game in hand. Jersey plays at the Islanders tomorrow night and the Hurricanes will next skate here in Raleigh against Tampa Bay on Tuesday
Teuvo Teravainen's second career hat trick was one of many highlights in the Canes' 6-0 pasting of the Lightning. Jesperi Kotkaniemi had the first 5-point game of his NHL career, notching a goal and four assists, Martin Necas had three helpers, and the Hurricanes went 4 for 5 on the power play in winning their second straight game. Carolina is now 7 for 9 with the man advantage the last two nights with the addition of defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere, who tallied a power play goal for the second straight night and tossed in a couple of assists as well. Freddie Andersen didn't have to do much, but a shut out is a shut out -- his first of the year, and Carolina's 7th as a team. The Canes lead the Metro by 2 points over the Devils with a game in hand.
The Carolina Hurricanes won their 4th straight, a 4-1 win over the Blues, as Andrei Svechnikov busted out of a 19-game goal drought with a pair of 1st period goals. Andrei's 20th and 21st goals of the season staked the Canes to a lead they would never relinquish. Sebastian Aho and Seth Jarvis would add goals in the 2nd and 3rd period's, respectively as that trio accounted for all four goals and 8 total points on the night. Freddie Andersen's 3rd straight win continued his strong run of play. In his last three games he's sporting a save percentage of .959 and he is now 14-4-0 on the season. Carolina leads New Jersey by 5 points in the Metropolitan Division with a game in hand over the Devils. The Hurricanes are off for two days before hosting the Senators and Ducks in back-to-back games on Friday and Saturday.
The Hurricanes kept it simple in their 3-2 win in Washington. They got to the front of the net to create traffic in front of the Capitals' goal. They got pucks through from the blue line and the Canes scored two of their three goals on net front deflections. Throw in 34 Freddie Andersen save and you have the recipe for a 3-2 win. Brent Burns, Paul Stastny and Stefan Noesen scored and Noesen added an assist hitting for 2 points for the 4th time this year. Carolina is off Wednesday before coming back to PNC Arena on Thursday to induct Cam Ward into the Hurricanes Hall of Fame
Sebastian Aho's 22nd goal of the year capped a 4-goal comeback as the Carolina Hurricanes won for the 6th straight time. The Canes entered the 3rd period trailing 4-1 after an utterly disastrous 2nd period. Carolina was a puck management and decision-making catastrophe in the middle frame and the mistakes cost them on 3 of the four goals -- at least. But, similarly to Friday's win over the Sharks, this team doesn't understand that sometimes it's just not your night. And, when Paul Stastny potted a rebound of a Derek Stepan shot 3 1/2 minutes into the 3rd period, you could sense the difference. Jordan Staal scored 6 minutes later to draw within 1. Then Teuvo Teravainen's power play goal leveled the score. Freddie Andersen won his 6th straight decision since returning from injury. Canes are in Buffalo Wednesday night as they close out the pre All Star Game portion of the schedule.
Freddie Andersen made 34 saves as the Carolina Hurricanes beat the Pittsburgh Penguins, 2-1, Saturday night at PNC Arena. In fact, Andersen was so good that only he could score into his net. Rickard Rakell's 3rd period power play goal was really more of an epic gaffe by Andersen. About 50 seconds into a 3rd period power play, Penguins star Sidney Crosby lofted a puck high into the air towards the Carolina net. Andersen gloved it but rather than accept a defensive zone face off he tried to flip it up in the air with his glove and bat the puck out of the zone. Alas, the puck was redirected by Rakell into the net for the goal -- the only one Pittsburgh would muster Saturday night. Brady Skjei and Jalen Chatfield each also scored for Carolina who will host Vancouver Sunday afternoon at 5:00
Does Carolina have a goaltending problem? Freddie Andersen lets in a late 3rd period bad goal as the Canes lose, 3-1, at home to the Maple Leafs. The Canes had plenty of chances to make that a moot point early in the game, but they were unable to get the puck behind Toronto's Erik Kallgren after taking a 1-0 lead in the opening period. Stefan Noesen scored the only Hurricanes goal, on a first period power play, as Carolina's record falls to 8-3-1 on the season.
The Carolina Hurricanes needed extra time for the second straight game. But, they came away with a 3-2 shootout win over the Washington Capitals to move back in front in the Metropolitan Division. Stefan Noesen and Andrei Svechnikov each scored, Martin Necas continued his torrid start with a pair of assists, and Freddie Andersen stopped Alex Ovechkin and Dylan Strome in the shootout to seal the win. Canes are off until Thursday night when they play the Lightning in Tampa.
The Hurricanes were uncharacteristically sloppy and it cost them in Edmonton. Freddie Andersen gave the puck away for one goal, then the Canes allowed a shorthanded tally for the go-ahead goal in the 2nd period and the Oilers never looked back. It all wasted Andrei Svechnikov's first regular season hat trick. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Andrei Svechnikov and Sebastian Aho each had 3 points as the Canes beat the Kraken, 5-1 in Seattle. Carolina notched their first two power play goals and ran their record to 3-0-0.
