Brett Pesce waited 22 games before he scored his first of the year, helping the Canes to beat Calgary, 3-2, on Saturday. That was so much fun, he decided to do it again, converting an Andrei Svechnikov feed into the OT winner as Carolina won for the second straight game, 3-2. Martin Necas (11th) and Svechnikov (14th) each scored, Sebastian Aho dished off a pair of assists. And, Carolina overcame the downer of Jake Guentzel's game-tying goal in the final minute of regulation to win their second in a row. The Hurricanes will try to make this a winning streak in St. Louis on Thursday

The start of the 2022-23 NHL campaign and fantasy hockey season has been a busy one, especially on the injury side of things. With the return of Boston Bruins star forward Brad Marchand, there are some intriguing options the Bruins now have to work with already having a hot start to their new season. We also touch on the solid start from Edmonton Oilers so-called back-up goalie in Stuart Skinner. Will Jack Campbell hold the crease in Edmonton? We also dive into some of the best fantasy hockey line combinations to start this young season. Steele takes a look into the Philadelphia Flyers and the strong start from Kevin Hayes, Travis Konecny, and Joel Farabee. Flip throws honourable mention to a strong line out west with L.A. Kings and Anze Kopitar, Kevin Fiala, and Adrian Kempe. Speaking of hot lines and good starts, Steele pegs the Boston Bruins' combo of David Pastrnak, David Krejci, and Taylor Hall as the best fantasy hockey line so far this year but Flip is still rocking with the deadly combination the Tampa Bay Lightning employ with Nikita Kucherov, Brayden Point, and Steven Stamkos. That's one way to start the season! Hunter goes into the Penguins' 6-2 thrashing of the Arizona Coyotes and starts with the goal scorers to open this episode. Yes, he took the L with Sidney Crosby scoring the first goal and not Rickard Rakell. He breaks down just how great of a pass that was from Jake Guentzel and how those two seem to be in midseason form ALREADY. He then breaks down the Jason Zucker goal & goes into how much more confident he looked as the game went on. Is this a sign of things to come for him? Where was he firing the puck from on most of his shots? After that, he praises the power play for looking really crisp, especially with the passing and the zone entries. Did anything new stick out about the unit? Even though there were a lot of positives, he does have to touch on the negatives, though there were mainly 2: The play of the 4th line and some errors from POJ. He goes over how each can correct their mistakes moving forward and what he wants to see more of. Other topics discussed: Kasperi Kapanen's growing confidence, Evgeni Malkin's masterful performance, Tristan Jarry's sharp form, and of course, YOUR LISTENER TAKEAWAYS! The preseason is finally over! The Pittsburgh Penguins dismantled the Buffalo Sabres, 7-1 on Friday night to end the preseason as the regular season is only a few days away! Hunter goes into who stood out in this game and he has to start with Ty Smith. He marvels at how good he was with the puck and how he looked to be in rookie form in this one. He makes the argument that if the Penguins can get this level from Ty Smith during the season, they'll win the Marino trade. Oh yeah, if he's not in the top six to start the season, there's a BIG problem. He then looks at how well Jake Guentzel and Sidney Crosby played (water is wet) before addressing Danton Heinen's beautiful goal. He breaks it down and shows how flashy he is with the puck. Is he going to score 18-20 this season or will he be closer to 12-15? Hunter gives his prediction for that before going into POJ's performance. Was this his last gasp? Did he do enough to earn a spot on this year's team? Could both he and Mark Friedman get waived before the season starts? All that, plus MUCH more on this episode of Locked On Penguins! There is only 1 week until the season, yinz! We have just about made it. Hunter starts the show by going into a couple of roster moves that were made by the Penguins as the team is starting to come into shape. After that, he looks at how the Penguins were practicing a lot of OT & shootouts stuff during camp on Wednesday & how they NEED TO be better in those sessions. He goes over the issues that plagued them last season in those extra sessions (especially the shootouts) and why those extra points are so valuable when you get to the end of the season. What does he want to see more of in the shootout? What about not being dull in OT? After that, he previews the final game of the preseason against the Buffalo Sabres and gives a full prediction on what the lineup will likely look like. Will POJ get into this game? Is this his final chance to show the staff that he belongs on this team? What about Sam Poulin? Finally, to end the show, he wishes a couple of very happy birthdays to Mario Lemieux and Jake Guentzel and again argues that Mario is the greatest player in NHL history. Happy Friday. Yes, it's now mid-August but the content NEVER sleeps. (I also apologize for the meh audio today, the mic spazzed out for some reason). Hunter starts the show by discussing what a contract extension looks like for Jake Guentzel. Yes, he's still two years away from becoming a UFA but that will fly by. He looks at Filip Forsberg as a comp since they're right around the same age (though Forsberg came into the league a bit quicker than Guentzel did. He gives his rough estimate of what the Penguins would likely pay him, and he tries to give a number that the Penguins could refuse (it would be very hard for them to do that). He also does point out the risk in those sorts of deals before pivoting to Johan Larsson leaving for Sweden. Hunter touches on why a deal with the Penguins was likely nixed before looking up Larsson's numbers and being confused as to how no team wanted to give him anything. Finally, Hunter ends the show by catching up with a few Penguin players playing in "Da Beauty League" in Minnesota as it's a summer league for a great cause. It is official, people: Puck drop on the 2022-23 NHL Season is official 60 days away and counting. With the kick-off to a new year upcoming, the injury news dealt to the Carolina Hurricanes and Vegas Golden Knights is obviously going to be an issue for both clubs' overall success. Max Pacioretty's torn achilles will see him miss six months, a blow to the Hurricanes top-six, but the Robin Lehner injury is especially huge for the Knights with the loss of their number one goaltender. Speaking of huge, the boys dedicate most of Friday's show to a look at the best fantasy line combinations in the world of NHL hockey. Trios that will continue to shape the fantasy landscape. Without looking into the obvious offensive juggernaut-type lines owned by the Edmonton Oilers, Toronto Maple Leafs, and reigning Stanley Cup champion Colorado Avalanche, Flip and Steele discuss some of the other top fantasy trios. Such as with the Pittsburgh Penguins and a top line that features Sidney Crosby, Jake Guentzel, and likely Bryan Rust. Mike Vellucci is rumored to be taking head coaching interviews...what does this mean for the Penguins? Hunter starts the show off with that topic after it was reported that the Flyers decided to interview him this past week as they look to find their new head coach. Hunter looks at how it wouldn't be that big of a deal if the Penguins lost him, considering how the PK played in the playoffs during this series. After that, he goes into who he would look to replace him with if he got a head-coaching gig, plus how this would be one of the rare times that Mike Sullivan would actually get to hand-pick his staff (thanks Jim Rutherford!) After that, Hunter reviews Jake Guentzel's season and goes into just how special it was. He slams the people who gave up on him after he no-showed for a couple of years in the playoffs and looks at the stats that led to that happening. He then looks at what realistic expectations should be for Guentzel heading into another season where he's in his prime. Finally, Hunter ends the show by going over a couple of trade options for a top defender that a few fans sent in if Kris Letang walks. Hint: They're both from the Western Conference. Would the Penguins be able to make it work? Should they be interested if one is made available? What would they have to give up? All that, plus much more on this episode of Locked On Penguins. Well, it's now offseason time, Pens fans. Hunter starts the show off by going into how gutted he was for the core after the Penguins fell to the Rangers on Sunday. He also talks about what they've meant to him over the years and how they even inspired him to do many things with this sport (including this show). After that, he touches on everything about that Game 7 performance and where it all went wrong. He goes into the penalty that should've been with Alexis Lafreniere at the end of the third period, but also slams John Marino for making a terrible defensive play. What should Marino have done in that situation? He then praises Tristan Jarry for one heck of a performance, even though he was obviously playing hurt. The Pittsburgh Penguins got back into the win column on Thursday night as they took down the Boston Bruins, 4-0! Hunter starts out the show by diving into Jake Guentzel's historic night and how he continues to defy expectations year after year. He starts with his opening goal and how he sent Charlie Coyle to another dimension with the move that he pulled on him. It was a goal that showcased what Guentzel can do when he was the puck on his stick. He then touches on Casey DeSmith's performance and how this could be a big building block for him. Hunter looks at how the Penguins can win consistently in the playoffs if he can be this good (I know, it's A LOT to ask) but they do have the forward depth and the depth on defense to do it. Hunter also looks at the underlying numbers and argues that the Penguins still played fairly well, despite allowing 52 shots. Jason Zucker also found the scoresheet as he got his eighth goal of the season. If he keeps this up, can he also change the course of the Penguins heading into the playoffs? Hunter ponders that point before diving into the listener takeaways to end the show. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! The Pittsburgh Penguins and New York Islanders played ANOTHER chaotic game on Tuesday night as this was a back-and-forth affair. Hunter starts off the show by laying into the team (while laughing) about the shootout as it was the same old story for the Penguins. He again explains why the Penguins are maybe trying to get the league to abolish the shootout with these attempts were terrible. He also bashes the overtime power play and looks at what the Penguins need to do better in that kind of situation moving forward (if they get another PP in an OT game this year). After that, he compliments Casey DeSmith's play and why it was the right call to start him, plus how he really wasn't to blame for most of those goals tonight. He then goes into Kris Letang's performance and why the Penguins need more out of him. Yes, the bad games are few and far between, but when he's bad, it's REAL bad. Hunter then praises Jake Guentzel and Danton Heinen as they played tremendously, plus goes into why Crosby and Rakell need to stay on a line together.
