Located in southern Siberia and covered in thick ice for almost half of the year, the colossal Lake Baikal reaches depths of 1600m making it the oldest, and deepest lake in the world. With hydrothermal vents, methane seeps and vast swathes of endemic species, this ancient lake was too tempting not to talk about. We speak with Professor Marianne Moore, a Limnologist who has been working on the lake for over 2 decades. She guides us through its incredible ecosystems and species such as the world's only freshwater seal, deep water insects and foot-long flatworms! Plus, we hear about the myths and mysteries of the lake: from scientifically testing whether the mafia can use amphipods to effectively dispose of bodies, to whether there really is 1600 tonnes of gold hiding at the bottom of the lake. The Professor is back on land after a succession of crazy adventures which includes writing a paper on backwards swimming in deep sea fish, finding the worlds deepest nudibranch (possibly) plus discovering his friends live in the most metal place ever. There's no Coffee with Andrew segment this month as he is taking a well deserved break (and is possibly touring the country looking for the strangest milks he can find), but we do hear from Kakani Kajita about the recent release of FathomVerse - the mobile game helping to contribute to deep sea citizen science. Kakani tells us about how it's doing in its first month of release, and how it's already making an impact in training deep sea AI models. Staal's 9th goal of the season snapped a 15-game goal drought. Sebastian Aho scored a power play goal to make it 2-0, it was his 33rd goal of the season. Aho added an assist on a Seth Jarvis empty net goal, meaning that Sebastian now has a career high 85 points on the season with 7 games left to play. The goal was Jarvis' 29th. Jake Guentzel had 2 assists and has 16 points (2g, 14a) in 11 games with the Hurricanes.

Pyotr Kotchetkov made a season-high 44 saves for his 3rd shutout of the season as the Canes ended the Panthers 6 game winning streak. It was the 2nd 1-0 shutout in his last 4 starts, having shut out the Devils two weeks ago on 34 shots in an overtime win. Sebastian Aho's 21st goal of the season was the only scoring of the game and came with 19 seconds left.
On today's edition of the Locked On FLORIDA Panthers Podcast, Armando Velez(@Mandoman12) brings in Nich Fairbanks(@prudentia0) for another edition of Fairbanks Friday. The two discuss Florida coming out on the losing end despite tilting the ice after Matthew Tkachuk and Gustav Forsling left the game in the first period due to injury. Florida had a big chance on a 4-minute power play when Jordan Staal was sent to the box for high sticking Nick Cousins, but could not connect on the man advantage. Panthers were asked to do a lot with having an odd number of players on both forward and defense, with a multitude of guys double shifting. It was a goalie battle between Sergei Bobrovsky and Pyotr Kochetkov on Thursday night as Kochetkov came out on the winning end with 44 saves. The guys discuss when they thought this game was lost, their three stars, and provide an injury update to both Tkachuk and Forsling. Tim Donnelly says the Carolina Hurricanes earned a massive 1-0 win over the Florida Panthers with Pyotr Kochetkov and Sebastian Aho leading the way, and that Kochetkov seems to be the No. 1 goalie headed into the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Also, a look ahead to the Hurricanes vs. the Dallas Stars and Buffalo Sabres.
Tim Donnelly says Pyotr Kochetkov played phenomenal for the Carolina Hurricanes in a 1-0 shutout win over the New Jersey Devils, but with the injuries to Antti Raanta & health concerns of Frederik Andersen, and Kochetkov's inconsistent play, the Hurricanes need to look hard for a goaltender at the 2024 NHL Trade Deadline.

The Canes out-Rangered the Rangers in a 6-1 win at Madison Square Garden. Carolina scored 2 1st period power play goals and got 28 saves from Pyotr Kochetkov as they won for the 4th consecutive time. It is the Canes longest winning streak of the season. Carolina is 10 for their last 21 on the power play and have scored at least 2 power play goals in 7 of their last 11 games. Kochetkov has a 6-1-2 record in his last 9 starts and has allowed 2 or fewer goals in 7 of those 9. Andrei Svechnikov (2 goals) and Sebastian Aho (1 assist) each extended their point streaks to 5 games.
Tim Donnelly discusses the Carolina Hurricanes and their 6-1 win over the New York Rangers, and wonders if the Canes can keep up their high level offensive production, led by Sebastian Aho & Andrei Svechnikov. Donnelly also says the high-level play of Pyotr Kochetkov in goal has eased the burden for the Carolina Hurricanes to immediately look for a goalie via trade.
UNC Football - disappointing end to the season Everything about yesterday looked bad -first play - 75yd TD, INT in the endzone, short punt goes off players leg recovered by WVU, WVU punt return TD -75-80% of people in attendance were WVU fans -they didn’t want to be there Carolina lost 5 of their last 7 games … only wins were in triple-OT against Duke who was playing with their third string QB in true freshman Grayson Loftus, and Campbell, who’s an FCS school NFL Hall of Fame Finalists announced - Torry Holt & Julius Peppers announced, no Steve Smith Sr. Canes get a big win - Aho was awesome; Kochetkov was solid; Svech looked like good Svech -PowerPlay was 3 of 6, Aho with his 500th career point, and 501, and 502, AND 503 … stars had to step up, and they did Aho, 1g 3a, Burns with 1 & 1, Svech with 1 & 1, Jarvis with 1 & 1, Bunting was effective on the PP, Kochetkov made 35 saves, including 15 in the 2nd period Nashville controlled a lot of play, especially early, and even in the 2nd period, especially at 5-on-5, but Carolina locked it down in the third and stayed out of the box NC State competes in the Pop Tarts Bowl in Orlando A contrast of seasons between NC State & UNC … While UNC felt checked out, it feels like NC State is all in … yes, players missing due to portal, NFL, etc., but every team deals with it Chance for a 10-win season, first under Doeren, keep the positive vibes going, Brennan Armstrong
The Carolina Hurricanes lost to the Washington Capitals, 2-1, in a shootout Sunday night. It was the third time in the last four games at PNC Arena that Carolina lost after regulation. The Hurricanes are now 5-3 after regulation on the season, 1-1 in the shootout. Sebastian Aho scored Carolina's only goal and Pyotr Kochetkov made 20 saves and is 2-0-1 with a .960 save percentage in his last three starts. And, because the team waived veteran goalie Antti Raanta this weekend and sent him to the minor leagues, they're going to rely heavily on Kochetkov until Frederik Andersen can return to action. He's missed the last 6 weeks dealing with a blood clotting issue, but has been cleared to resume workouts and could be back on the ice in the next week. However, it's still unlikely that we see him before the start of February.

Pyotr Kotchetkov stopped 31 shots -- including a 3rd period penalty shot -- helping the Hurricanes to a 4-1 win in Ottawa. Sebastian Aho scored twice in a 3 point night and Carolina's special teams were fantastic. The penalty kill went 4 for 4, the power play converted twice and it all added up to a win that snapped the team's 4-game losing streak.

In this episode, recorded October 9th, 2023, Alex goes over the flurry of transactions that happened within the Tampa Bay Lightning organization in advance of their roster being due to the NHL at 5 PM. She discusses Gabriel Fortier, Zach Bogosian, Alex Barre-Boulet, and Pyotr Kochetkov from the Carolina organization. She focuses a bit of time on the Kochetkov transaction in particular, discussing the goalie's temporary place in a new organization. She then takes some time peaking back at Syracuse's 1-1 preseason before previewing the team's upcoming few weeks, including their 30th Anniversary opening night festivities.
Carolina lost 5-1 in Nashville. But, on the bright side, Antti Raanta and Pyotr Kochetkov each played well. Raanta made 21 saves and was very good in spite of allowing 5 goals in 2 periods. Kochetkov was spectacular in comfortably handling 13, 3rd period shots to keep his sheet clean. Ryan Suzuki had Carolina's lone goal and 18-year old Felix Unger-Sorum had that primary assist, but each left the game with an injury and did not return. Hopefully neither is a serious matter. The Hurricanes will close out the preseason Friday night at PNC Arena against the Predators. The Canes are scheduled to ice a lineup that is far more representative of the opening night group.

More than anything, the Hurricanes have needed a game in which their goaltender stole a win. For as many times as it's seemed to happen to them, the Canes haven't had too many nights where they got the game take to them only to have the goelie stand on his head and win the night. At PNC Arena, against the Toronto Maple Leafs, Pyotr Kochetkov did just that. 41 saves for his 12th win of the season and one of his best performances in the NHL was enough to get the Canes to the finish line with 2 points in hand. Speaking of the "Finnish" line, Sebastian Aho's goal with less than 3 minutes to play proved to be the game-winne. And, it turned a night in which his line was largely ineffective against Toronto. Brent Burns, Jordan Staal, Stefan Noese and Teuvo Teravainen also scored in the win as the Canes raised their point total to 102 on the year. That's two more than the New Jersey Devils who were home winners over the Senators on Saturday. Carolina will host Boston at 5:00 pm on Sunday.

Wes AKA JarvyDrury joins us! Long time Caniac since he was a kid. Talks 2002,2006, 2009 Dad was a Whalers fan Inspired by John Forsland to become a sports broadcaster Eric Staal & Seth Jarvis Defense is scoring, but offense is not PP is 0/9 in last 3 games, PK has scored in 3/9 during same 3 games What's up with Coghlan? What changed since pre-season Chatfield tearing it up, solidified 5th guy, great wheels Trade maybe, or bring up Lajoie? Defensive scoring should open up offense Burns scores because Bluejackets don't move after faceoff Andersen is back and looks good, are Raanta and Kochetkov less than 100%? Remember Kochetkov is a kid, maybe too much pressure too early Patches minor injury - We know he's a glass cannon I asked Walt Ruff about RBA's 200th win, but it's Colin's fault Congrats to RBA for 200th win, 3rd fastest all time, and complete culture change for the Hurricanes RBA is surplanting Ron Francis as "THE" Hurricanes player
1. Philadelphia 76ers -9.5 vs. Detroit Pistons -105 For 1.5 Units* No Cade, Bagley, Bogdanovic, and potentially no Livers either for Detroit* Tucker and Embiid are GTD, so we are banking on them going.* Perhaps wait until closer to tip-off cause if they don't I would still back them, just at a better number.2. Carolina Hurricanes ML vs. New Jersey Devils -150 For 1 Unit* Hurricanes winning 6 of their last 7 at home is always a good thing with Kochetkov going* Vanecek for New Jersey has been good in his last 3 but lost the 4 prior to that so I anticipate his winning streak comes to an end for the streaky tendy.3. Pittsburgh Penguins in Regulation vs. Vancouver Canucks -123 For 2 Units* Pittsburgh has not been great recently, but in their own barn they on the season have played well at 10-4-4.* Looking like 15-5-4 Tristan Jarry is going as well, so I am anticipating Pittsburgh to win in 60 minutes and move on4. Vanderbilt Commodores vs. Tennessee Volunteers Under 132.5 -110 For 2 Units* Vanderbilt is +17.5 but scoring 71 per game going up against a 52 PPG defense in Tennessee* I believe that Tennessee can hit 70+ points due to Vanderbilt's average defense, but I question whether Vandy crosses 55 points* A defense like that vs a team that is 232nd in fg% and 219th in 3fg% tells me they will struggle.5. Michigan State Spartans ML vs. Wisconsin Badgers -121 For 1.5 Units* Winning four out of five conference games in your opponent's building historically is a stat I love.* It shows that regardless of talent, cause they have traded who is better, the Spartans just know how to win there.* This is a pick em and Wisconsin covering just 2 of 7 home games makes me back the Spartans tonight.Potential Betting Leans For TodayNBAPortland Trail Blazers -6.5 vs. Orlando Magic -110CBBNorth Carolina Tar Heels vs. #11 Virginia Cavaliers Over 136 -110NHLFlorida Panthers vs. Colorado Avalanche Under 6.5 -110Drop A 5-Star Review & Follow Us On All Our Social Media PlatformsTwitter Facebook YoutubeAlso, Go & Check Out Our Phenomenal Sponsors Down Below!Sign Up For Bet99 HereCheck Out Last Mountain Distillery HereThanks for reading Competitive Hedge Show Plays! Pyotr Kochetkov makes 37 saves, Jordan Staal scored his 9th of the season -- and the 5th time in the last 9 games -- and the Carolina Hurricanes reclaimed the top spot in the Metropolitan Division with a 4-1 win over the New Jersey Devils. Jesperi Kotkaniemi opened the scoring just 20 seconds into the opening period winning a couple of net-front battles en route to his 4th goal of the year. Staal and Teuvo Teravainen would score twice in a 2:04 span of the 2nd period, the latter coming while shorthanded, as Carolina led 3-0 after 40 minutes. Stefan Noesen's 6th of the season, late in the 3rd period closed out the scoring. Canes will next play on Thursday in Pittsburgh.
Both Hosts start talking about some canes news regarding the board of governors meeting the NIL had along with injury updates (0:45). Then they start talking about the action-packed week for the canes starting the Kochetkov's second shutout against Detroit (11:08). Then they discuss the first home game in quiet some time against Seattle (17:01). Then they talk about the thrilling OT win against Dallas (32:10) and end with the Pittsburgh game (48:48). Also, artificial intelligence bots are now able to generate full conversations. Joe Ovies & Joe Giglio discuss the AI generated programming.
Pyotr Kochetkov made 27 saves, Brady Skjei scored the lone goal of the game and the Canes beat the Red Wings, 1-0 in Detroit. Carolina closes out their longest road trip of the season 5-0-1 and have now extracted at least one point from 10 consecutive road games (6-0-4). The win, coupled with the Devils loss to the Stars (Saturday's opponent at PNC Arena) narrows New Jersey's lead in the Metro to 6 points over the Hurricanes and Penguins. Carolina is 6-0-2 in their last 8 and will host Seattle on Thursday as they open a 4-game home stand.
Pyotr Kochetkov got his second straight shutout, this time blanking the Detroit Red Wings, 1-0. Joe Ovies states that Kochetkov needs to be the No. 1 goalie now, and don't send him back to the AHL when Freddie Andersen returns from injury. Plus, Joe Giglio points out that Rod Brind'Amour has been able to manage goalie tandems and trios perfectly throughout his coaching career. Also, Spencer Hall of the SEC Network joined to discuss the passing of Mississippi State head coach, Mike Leach.

Even though we officially have no games on the NHL schedule for Thursday, there is still a lot to talk about when it comes to the world of fantasy hockey and fantasy hockey news. Like the injury timetable to Winnipeg Jets star forward Nikolaj Ehlers who won't be out as long as expected. Good news for a Jets team in need of some offense. At the other end of the ice, the Carolina Hurricanes went a long way to solidifying their future goaltending prospects with the 4-year deal awarded to up-and-coming young goalie Pyotr Kochetkov. Keep your eye on this player with both Frederik Andersen and Antti Raanta's contracts set to expire this upcoming offseason. We wrap the show by looking into some of the top fantasy hockey underachievers on the season so far, players that could be good targets for buy-low sell-high situations. Guys such as Pittsburgh Penguins forward Bryan Rust or even goalie Tristan Jarry. Or even Calgary Flames superstar forward Jonathan Huberdeau or Andrew Mangiapane or even Detroit Red Wings prized rookie defenseman Moritz Seider. Even if you are in a keeper or dynasty fantasy league, these are some decent options to consider.Options such as Florida Panthers sneaky-good goalie Spencer Knight, who continues to get more chances in South Florida, or even someone more under-the-radar like Arizona Coyotes netminder in Karel Vejmelka. The Washington Commanders turned methodical drives into scores and took advantage of turnover-prone Philadelphia to stun the Eagles 32-21 on Monday night and send them to their first loss in nine games this season. Behind Jalen Hurts, the Eagles were 8-0 for the first time in franchise history and the last team in the NFL that could make a run at Miami’s 17-0 mark in 1972 and the lone perfect season. The 2007 New England Patriots came close, going 18-0 before a Super Bowl loss. The Commanders also spoiled Pittsburgh’s 11-0 start in 2020. Hurts threw for just 174 yards. NCAAFB – Suspect caught in fatal shooting of 3 UVA FB players Authorities said a University of Virginia student and former member of the school’s football team fatally shot three current players as they returned from a field trip. The shooting set off panic and a 12-hour lockdown of the campus until the suspect was captured Monday. Students who were told to shelter in place beginning late Sunday described terrifying hours in hiding. While police searched for the gunman through the night, students sought safety in closets, dorm rooms, libraries and apartments. They listened to police scanners and tried to remember everything they were taught as children during active-shooter drills. The suspect was identified as 22-year-old Christopher Darnell Jones Jr. NCAAFB – Coach: Slain Virginia football players ‘were all good kids’ Three University of Virginia football players killed in an on-campus shooting are being remembered by head football coach Tony Elliott as “incredible young men with huge aspirations and extremely bright futures.” Devin Chandler, Lavel Davis Jr., and D’Sean Perry were returning from a class trip Sunday night when authorities say they were killed by a fellow student. The young men were athletes who’d been journeying through varying periods of transition in their college football careers. One was bouncing back from a season-ending injury. The Australian Broadcasting Corp. says it has confirmed newspaper reports that the immigration minister has overturned Djokovic’s potential three-year exclusion period from Australia. The Australian Border Force has previously said an exclusion period could be waived under certain circumstances. Immigration Minister Andrew Giles has declined comment on privacy grounds. That means any announcement on Djokovic’s visa status for Australia would have to come from the 35-year-old Serbian tennis star. FIFA – World Cup – US Soccer uses rainbow crest in Qatar The U.S. Soccer Federation is using a rainbow version of its crest at the Americans’ World Cup training facility in Doha, Qatar. Another had changed positions on the team. And yet another had recently transferred in from the University of Wisconsin. MLB – Cubs release 5-time Gold Glove outfielder Heyward The Chicago Cubs have released Jason Heyward, cutting ties with a five-time Gold Glove outfielder who never produced at the plate the way they hoped. The 33-year-old Heyward had one season left on the $184 million, eight-year contract he signed prior to the 2016 season. He hit .245 with 62 home runs over seven years with the Cubs. Olympics – Winter 2026 – Russian skater Valieva could miss 2026 Olympics over doping The Court of Arbitration for Sport says 16-year-old Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva faces a potential four-year doping ban which would rule her out of the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan-Cortina d’Ampezzo. CAS has registered an appeal from the World Anti-Doping Agency and says WADA is seeking a four-year ban to start on the date CAS makes its ruling. That would cover the next Olympics in Italy. WADA also wants Valieva to be disqualified from events including her gold-medal win in the Olympic team event in Beijing in February. Our guest this week is Igor Viktorovich Kochetkov. Igor Viktorovich - one of the founders and current director of the Russian LGBT Network, an organisation founded in 2006 whose main office is located in St. Petersburg. The Russian LGBT Network is an interregional organisation created to provide public support for the elimination of all forms of discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. It is the first and only interregional LGBT organisation in Russia. The Russian LGBT Network is a member of the International Lesbian and Gay Association.Topics discussed in the podcast include: the history of the Russian LGBT Network, its goals and objectives; why it was founded in St. Petersburg; the impact on the Russian LGBT Network of the law on foreign agents; the adoption and consequences of the 2013 law against "Promotion among Minors of Non-traditional Sexual Relations”; the situation in Russia in general and in Chechnya in particular for LGBT people; amendments to the Constitution; and what needs to be done to further promote LGBT rights.Sergei Nikitin writes: The breaking up of the Queer Culture Festival in 2006 was the formal impetus to create an organisation now known as the Russian LGBT Network. On Sunday Simon Cosgrove and I talked to one of its founders, Igor Kochetkov. It was a very interesting conversation in which Igor told us the story of how LGBT people's rights have come to be perceived as an important component of human rights. This has happened in a relatively short time. I remember at the very beginning of my work for Amnesty International in Russia, some Amnesty activists expressed their disagreement with our position on LGBT rights. Now, this area of work for human rights defenders attracts many new people to Amnesty and is welcomed by very many. Paradoxically, it would seem, it was the shameful law of 2013 against 'Propaganda Among Minors of Non-Traditional Sexual Relations' that has led to this turnaround. A great deal has been done by the Russian LGBT Network, and you can find out more about the organisation and its work from their website: https://www.lgbtnet.org . In the meantime, listen to our podcast with the wonderful Igor Kochetkov. This podcast is in Russian.
