Will Smith's agent, Sean Coffey, joins the San Jose Hockey Now Podcast!Coffey takes us behind the scenes of Smith signing with the San Jose Sharks this past week. But before we get to Coffey (44:15), we talk about what Smith's arrival means for the Sharks. We'll talk more to Coffey about this -- he wasn't one of Sheng's sources!! -- but Sheng got wind of Smith signing last Friday. (1:50)What was our initial reaction to the news? (4:20)Would it make sense for the San Jose Sharks to send Smith to the AHL? Would the Sharks try to “slide” his contract? How does Smith compare to William Eklund at about the same age? (15:05)Comparing Macklin Celebrini-Smith to Sidney Crosby-Evgeni Malkin and Jonathan Toews-Patrick Kane? Why start the clock on Celebrini and Smith's contracts at the same time? (24:00)Where does Smith slot positionally, center or wing, in his rookie year? It is more common than Sheng thought to go through a season with two rookie centers in the line-up. (27:20)Sheng shares a conversation that he had with a league source about the lumps that Smith will likely face in his rookie year, his struggles at the World Championships, and what Smith has to learn about winning NHL hockey. (36:35)Sheng and Keegan predict how many points that Smith will put up next year. (40:23)And now, Sean Coffey! (44:15)How did Coffey become a player agent? When did the San Jose Sharks start signaling to Coffey that they thought Smith was ready to come out? (49:28)When did Smith actually decide to sign with the Sharks? How many meetings did Smith have with Mike Grier or Todd Marchant or the Sharks throughout the season? (51:55)Did Ryan Leonard announcing early that he was going back to Boston College impact Smith in any way? (55:20)Sean shares why he ghosted Sheng via text for a few weeks. (57:25)Coffey reveals when exactly Smith made his decision to come out. (58:10)Between Boston College and the San Jose Sharks, how close of a decision was it for Smith? (1:00:10)For Coffey, from a development standpoint, why did it make sense for Smith to go pro?Coffey confirms that the San Jose Sharks winning the Draft Lottery and getting presumptive No. 1 pick Macklin Celebrini had nothing to do with Smith's decision -- but regardless, it's great for fellow teenagers Celebrini and Smith to start out together. (1:02:40)Coffey talks about the potential (or lack thereof) of Smith going to the AHL or the Sharks trying to “slide” his contract. (1:05:15)Did the Cutter Gauthier situation change the paradigm of how NHL teams treat their top NCAA prospects? (1:09:00)Coffey explains, even though Smith decided in early May, why Smith held off on the announcement that he was coming out until this past week. (1:13:00)Was it a challenge to keep Smith's decision a secret? Sean also talks about keeping Sheng's texts on “Read” when Sheng was looking for confirmation.Sheng shares his process from getting wind of the Smith signing on Friday to publishing a story on it on Sunday, two days before it was officially announced. (1:17:40)Why was Tuesday the day that the Sharks announced Smith's signing? (1:19:45)Coffey shares some of the details about the bonuses in Smith's entry-level contract. (1:21:55)https://twitter.com/PuckPedia/status/1795509414990090339 Who is Coffey representing in the 2024 Draft? (1:28:00)Also, Coffey subscribes to San Jose Hockey Now! Sean Hill, Former Carolina Hurricane #22, on the sensational win last night for the Canes at PNC Arena. Could Sean feel the momentum shift for the Canes last night after the first goal? Who does Sean say has been giving a 110% every day, even if he’s not at his peak just yet? Who would Sean consider an ultimate teammate on this team? Would Sean agree with Adam’s 3 stars, even with all of the candidates? How does Sean feel about Jordan Staal as their captain?
Pyotr Kochetkov stopped all 26 shots in the Canes' 3-0 win in Montreal as Carolina went over the 100-point mark for the 3rd straight season. Their 101 points trail only the Rangers' 104 in the Eastern Conference. Jordan Staal snapped a scoreless tie in the 2nd period with a shorthanded goal, Carolina's 10th on the season. Staal's 9th goal of the season snapped a 15-game goal drought. Sebastian Aho scored a power play goal to make it 2-0, it was his 33rd goal of the season. Aho added an assist on a Seth Jarvis empty net goal, meaning that Sebastian now has a career high 85 points on the season with 7 games left to play. The goal was Jarvis' 29th. Jake Guentzel had 2 assists and has 16 points (2g, 14a) in 11 games with the Hurricanes.
Stefan Noesen's 3rd period goal gave the Hurricanes a 3-2 win over the Wild in Minnesota. Pyotr Kochetkov made 28 saves and the Canes rallied from a 2-1 deficit late in the 2nd period to pick up the win. Jordan Staal and Andrei Svechnikov each scored as well, with Andrei's coming with about 30 seconds left in the 2nd period. That goal got the Canes even and they played a much better period in the end.
On today's edition of the Locked On FLORIDA Panthers Podcast, Armando Velez(@Mandoman12) brings in Nich Fairbanks(@prudentia0) for another edition of Fairbanks Friday. The two discuss Florida coming out on the losing end despite tilting the ice after Matthew Tkachuk and Gustav Forsling left the game in the first period due to injury. Florida had a big chance on a 4-minute power play when Jordan Staal was sent to the box for high sticking Nick Cousins, but could not connect on the man advantage. Panthers were asked to do a lot with having an odd number of players on both forward and defense, with a multitude of guys double shifting. It was a goalie battle between Sergei Bobrovsky and Pyotr Kochetkov on Thursday night as Kochetkov came out on the winning end with 44 saves. The guys discuss when they thought this game was lost, their three stars, and provide an injury update to both Tkachuk and Forsling. Carolina played well, but fell short in a 4-2 loss to the Stars in Dallas. Jordan Staal scored once and added an assist. And, Pyotr Kochetkov played very well for the second straight game in making 18 saves. Unfortunately, defensive coverage mistakes cost the Hurricanes on all three goals. Jesper Fast had his 6th goal of the season as well. Staal's goal, his 7th of the season, was his 11th career marker against the Stars in 31 games.
Antti Raanta made 23 saves, and fellow Fins Sebastion Aho and Teuvo Teravainen each had a goal and an assist as Carolina won for the second time in 27 hours in a 3-2 win over the Devils. Carolina beat Boston, 3-2, on the road on Wednesday and are now just 2 points behind the Rangers in the Metro. Jordan Staal's deflection goal came 25 seconds after Teravainen's 2nd period power play tally and snapped a 14 game goal-scoring drought for the captain.
The Carolina Hurricanes put up 6 the hard way in a 6-3 win over the Vegas Golden Knights. The Hurricanes doubled down and then some on the power play, scoring three times with the man advantage. Andrei Svechnikov had a seat at the table for the first time in two weeks and cashed in the game's first goal and also delivered the game's biggest hits. Jordan Staal, Jesperi Kotkaniemi, Michael Bunting, Seth Jarvis and Brady Skjei also scored. And, Pyotr Kotchetkov made 30 saves and was outstanding for the 4th straight game.

Ville Husso had the best game of his season, except for the moment where he didn't. Husso made 37 saves in 2-1 loss, but a huge misplay behind the net allowed Jordan Staal to score the game winner. The Hurricanes also dominated the Red Wings throughout the game at 5v5, really exposing the teams desperate need for Larkin and Compher. It was a conflicting game. The Canes played one of their best defensive games of the season in a 2-1 win over the Red Wings. Carolina allowed 26 shots, but very few were great looks and Pyotr Kotchetkov enjoyed his second consecutive 1-goal outing. Jack Drury extended his points streak to 4 with a 1st period goal and Jordan Staal poked home the game-winner after Red Wings goalie Ville Husso misplayed the puck right in front of his net.

The Hurricanes wrap up an extended road trip with a win against the Red Wings. Correspondent Denny Kapp reports.
The Carolina Hurricanes suffered an overtime loss to the New York Islanders in spite of out-shooting New York by nearly 3-to-1! Carolina put 43 shots on Isles' goalie Symeon Varlamov, and scored 4 times. But, New York got five past Pyotr Kochetkov on just 16 shots on goal. A week ago the Hurricanes saw the Lightning score 8 on just 14 shots. Jalen Chatfield, Jordan Staal, Jack Drury and Sebastian Aho all scored as the Hurricanes failed in their attempt to win their 3rd straight game.
The Carolina Hurricanes lost the Philadelphia Flyers, 3-1, and there are concerns about the Canes being 9-7 through 16 games. Tim Donnelly points out how leaders on the team like Jordan Staal and Jordan Martinook, along with head coach Rod Brind-Amour, have question the consistency and 'buy-in' of the team. Also, will Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper be patient enough to properly build a sustainable, winning team?

Jordan Staal scored once and assisted on the game-winning goal as the Canes beat Ottawa, 5-3, in front of a capacity, opening night crowd at PNC Arena. Staal's goal came about 20 seconds into the 3rd period, giving Carolina a 3-1 lead. But, the Sens scored twice in a 35 second span to even the score at 3. 2:02 later, Jordan Martinook stole the puck in the offensive zone, then Staal and Jesper Fast set up Brady Skjei's one-timer that gave the Canes a 4-3 lead they would not give up. Jaccob Slavin finished the scoring with a short-handed goal. Teuvo Teravainen and Michael Bunting each had goals for the Hurricanes as they scored twice in the second period after trailing 1-0 after the first. Carolina heads west for the five games of a 6 game road trip starting Saturday night in Los Angeles.
The Carolina Hurricanes dominated the 1st and 3rd periods in a 4-1 win over the Nashville Predators as each team closed out the preseason at PNC Arena. The Canes got a first period goal from Teuvo Teravainen to open the scoring. Then goals from Seth Jarvis, Martin Necas and Michael Bunting added to the total. Frederik Andersen stopped 22 of 23 shots in the win. Though, to be fair, the only goal was a fluke, as Yakov Trenin's centering feed caromed off the skate of Jordan Staal and underneath Andersen to tie the game at 1 late in the 2nd. Carolina will open the regular season on Wednesday night at PNC against the Ottawa Senators.
Adam Gold sits down with Jordan Staal to find out who his favorite player is, who it was, what it feels like to be the favorite and what he thinks of his brother Eric as a player.
During The Drive with Tim Donnelly live in Charlotte for day two of the 2023 ACC Football Kickoff, Tim and producer Dennis Cox discuss what ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips' had to say when he spoke to Adam Gold earlier in the day. Phillips mentioned the magnificent seven, the revenue standpoint now, and moving forward, congressional support, and more. Also, speaking of Adam Gold, he joined Tim to share his thoughts on Carolina Hurricanes forward Sebastian Aho's 8-year, $78 million contract extension. Gold believes that was a much-needed move that the Hurricanes needed to make and how it can set up for Aho to take over as a captain of the team, once Jordan Staal's career comes to an end with the team. Gold also shares other roster moves that are to come shortly.

In our second summer(ish) chat, I riff on the 4-year contract for Jordan Staal, the potential for the Canes to bring Tony DeAngelo back to Raleigh, and elimination of special warm up jerseys as a remedy for protecting players who refuse to support "Pride" night.
Jordan Staal has re-signed with the Carolina Hurricanes, locking up the team’s captain for four more seasons. The deal is $11.6 million, with a $2.9 million annual salary cap. Staal, 34, has been with the Hurricanes since 2012 and has helped the team reach the playoffs in each of the past five seasons. Chris Lea & Dennis Cox discuss the impact of re-signing on the Hurricanes. Also, the Carolina Hurricanes could also be expecting the return of a former defenseman, Tony DeAngelo. The Philadelphia Flyers acquired DeAngelo last year for three draft picks. Former Flyers general manager Chuck Fletcher signed the 27-year-old defenseman to a two-year $10 million contract. New GM Danny Briere is looking to clean house a trade is expected to happen for DeAngelo by the Hurricanes.

We discuss if they'll be better, worse, or the same.

With the second pick in the 2023 NBA Draft, the Charlotte Hornets selected Brandon Miller, a forward from Alabama. Chris Lea & Paul Ihander discuss the Hornets' decision to draft Miller and speculate how he'll fit into the team's long-term plans. The Brotherhood continues to grow in the NBA as Dariq Whitehead and Dereck Lively II from Duke were also picked in the first round. Also, Carolina Hurricanes captain Jordan Staal expressed during exit interviews that he wanted to remain with the Carolina Hurricanes and wanted to finish his career in Raleigh. TSN Hockey insider Darren Dreger reported that contract conversations have hit a standstill. Staal is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1st. Could we have seen Staal play his last season in Carolina this past year?

Sam Bennett is an absolute MENACE to play against, and if you need evidence of that, look no further than THE HIT on Jaccob Slavin in Game 4 of the Eastern Conference Final. Bennett spoke to Dregs on the monumental opportunity of advancing to the final round of the playoffs, the confidence a HOT Sergei Bobrovsky gives the Panthers, and Matthew Tkachuk's 'clutch' gene. Plus, his legendary playoff beard, and pro-golfer Brooks Koepka's 'P's' fandom. In Headlines, the guys discuss the Florida Panthers clinching a Stanley Cup finals berth, and Matthew Tkachuk's MVP calibre performance in the 3rd round. Game 4 of Panthers vs. Canes was not without controversy as a late Jordan Staal penalty resulted in the Tkachuk game-winner with 4.3 seconds left. Ray voices his displeasure in the call after a high-stick wasn't called against the Panthers prior to the tripping penalty. Jamie Benn may have just exited the Western Conference Finals as the Stars captain will sit for a 2-game suspension. The guys discuss Benn's cross-check on Mark Stone, the decision by Benn to skip media scrums until the next day, and his strange comments on the obvious cross-check. Ray gives his ice-level-view of a disastrous Game 3 for the Stars (and their fans), and how Dallas can stave off elimination in Game 4. The guys wrap headlines with news from around the NHL, including the Pittsburgh Penguins' interest in Kyle Dubas, if Brendan Shanahan is overstepping with his assurances to the ‘core-4' in Toronto, and Craig Conroy's first big decision as Flames GM. Kris Abbott takes the episode off for a ‘working vacation' and the guys chat Betano's Stanley Cup odds. Ray has a front-row seat to the Vegas Golden Knights and thinks another sweep is in order. He also makes his pick for the winner in a prospective Panthers/Golden Knights final. Follow us here! Another day, another podcast from a hotel-room for Ray as he gets set for ESPN duties. However, a surly hotel neighbour was less than thrilled, making a guest appearance in supremely petty fashion, you don't want to miss it! In Headlines, the guys delve into the latest from around the NHL. Connor Bedard's landing-spot is now clear as the Chicago Blackhawks won the Draft Lottery. The hype surrounding the lottery, twitterverse conspiracy theories, and pulling an ‘Eric Lindros' are discussed. A huge bounce-back win for the Vegas Golden Knights swings the momentum back in their favour, however, an injury to Laurent Brossoit leaves more question-marks in the Golden Knights' crease. Ahead of Canes/Devils, the guys discuss what's been an unpredictable series thus far as New Jersey came out guns blazing in Game 3. Ray focuses in on Jordan Staal and what the Canes centre will have to do to quell the (now toothless) smile of Jack Hughes. Plus, the depth players on the Toronto Maple Leafs being the best players on the team is a concern as the guys discuss a surprise Panthers team on the verge of sweeping the Leafs. Ray expresses his concern at Toronto's stars, and the play of Mitch Marner needing to be better. Kris Abbott speak on the NHL's Draft Lottery, and select bettors who cashed in on the Chicago Blackhawks. Ray chimes in on the Bedard sweepstakes and takes aim at the people suggesting a ‘fix'. Plus, the Florida Panthers emerging as cup-favourites in betting markets, and the constantly changing probabilities in the NHL playoffs. In Ask Ray & Dregs Anything, the guys answer your questions every week! The guys are asked about officiating complaints, which former Jack Adams nominee will be the first to land a coaching new gig, and the guys get some.. background music as they discuss their best and worst golf-shots of the year. It was an awful start and a feisty finish as the Hurricanes lost, 8-4, to the Devils in Game 3 of their best of seven series. New Jersey scored 3 times in the first period, including a shorthanded goal that made it 3-0. Then opened the second period with a 4th marker in the first minute. So, everything that happened after that might be taken with a grain of salt. But, Carolina scored three times while shorthanded, including a Jordan Martinook penalty shot, and got goals from Sebastian Aho, Jordan Staal and Seth Jarvis in the loss. Frederik Andersen allowed the first four goals and was lifted for Pyotr Kochetkov. Game 4 is Tuesday night in New Jersey.
Frederik Andersen stopped 28 shots, Jesperi Kotkaniemi scored twice and the Carolina Hurricanes dusted the New Jersey Devils, 6-1 to grab a 2-0 series lead. Game 3 in on Sunday afternoon at the Prudential Center in Newark. After a scoreless first period, the Hurricanes scored 4 times in the 2nd period with Kotkaniemi getting an early brace. His power play goal at 1:35 gave the Canes a 1-0 lead and then scored roughly 2 minutes later to double the score. Jordan Staal and Martin Necas would score in the final 3 minutes of the period to make it 4-0. Carolina got 3rd period goals from Jordan Martinook and Stefan Noesen to close out the scoring. In his 3 playoff starts, Andersen has a 3-0 record with a 0.97 goals against average and a .963 save percentage.
The Carolina Hurricanes 5th penalty was the breaking point as Kyle Palmeiri's deflection from outside of the goal got past Antti Raanta to give the Islanders a 2-1 late 3rd period lead en route to a 5-1 win on Long Island. Carolina still leads the series 2 games to 1 with Game 4 Sunday afternoon. The Canes lone goal came from Jesper Fast who scored shorthanded on a feed from Jordan Staal to even the score at 1-1 late in the 2nd period. New York was 1 for 5 on the power play while the Hurricanes were 0 for 3.
More than anything, the Hurricanes have needed a game in which their goaltender stole a win. For as many times as it's seemed to happen to them, the Canes haven't had too many nights where they got the game take to them only to have the goelie stand on his head and win the night. At PNC Arena, against the Toronto Maple Leafs, Pyotr Kochetkov did just that. 41 saves for his 12th win of the season and one of his best performances in the NHL was enough to get the Canes to the finish line with 2 points in hand. Speaking of the "Finnish" line, Sebastian Aho's goal with less than 3 minutes to play proved to be the game-winne. And, it turned a night in which his line was largely ineffective against Toronto. Brent Burns, Jordan Staal, Stefan Noese and Teuvo Teravainen also scored in the win as the Canes raised their point total to 102 on the year. That's two more than the New Jersey Devils who were home winners over the Senators on Saturday. Carolina will host Boston at 5:00 pm on Sunday.
