The Canes fell to the Islanders in double overtime as Matt Barzal's second goal of the game pushed the series to a Game 5 in Raleigh. Barzal's deflection of a Robert Bortuzzo shot from the blueline 84 seconds into the second overtime kept the series going. Seth Jarvis and Stefan Noesen bookended power play goals around Barzal's first goal of the series and a Jean-Gabriel Pageau power play goal as the teams were even at 2 after regulation. Frederik Andersen and Semyon Varlamov combined for 77 saves as both goaltenders were excellent. Game 5 is Tuesday at PNC Arena
Frederik Andersen's 29 saves highlighted the Hurricanes 3-2 win on Long Island. Andrei Svechnikov had two primary assists as the Hurricanes built an early lead and held on for the win. Carolina has a 3-0 lead in the best-of-seven series with Game 4 coming Saturday afternoon in New York. Brent Burns opened the scoring with his first goal in the last 20 games. His shot from the blue line deflected off the stick of NY defenseman Mike Reilly and got past Ilya Sorokin for a 1-0 lead in the first. About 6 minutes later, Svechnikov's pass found Dmitry Orlov who beat Sorokin for a 2-0 lead. Andrei would also set up Sebastian Aho's second goal of the series as the Canes made the score 3-1 in the middle of the second. But the story was Andersen who is now 3-0 in the postseason having allowed 6 goals on 77 shots (.922 SV%). Andrei's 4 points (4 assists) lead Carolina in scoring this postseason.
Tim Donnelly & Dennis Cox discuss the Carolina Hurricanes winning Game 3 over the New York Islanders, 3-2, to take a 3-0 series lead in the opening round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Tim says the Carolina Hurricanes shouldn't be content with how they've played so far in the series. Also, goalie Frederik Andersen has played like the No. 1 goalie the Carolina Hurricanes have wanted him to be.

Tim Donnelly & Dennis Cox were joined by Jamie Hersh of the NHL Network to discuss the Carolina Hurricanes leading the New York Islanders 2-0 in their opening round series of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, including the depth of the Hurricanes, the addition of Jake Guentzel, and if the Hurricanes should stick with their rotation in goal with Frederik Andersen & Pyotr Kochetkov.
During Cop or Drop, Dennis Cox poses questions to Tim Donnelly about the Carolina Hurricanes vs the New York Islanders, including the injury to Brett Pesce, and if Pyotr Kochetkov should start in net over Frederik Andersen in Game 3 of the series. Also, questions about JJ Redick interviewing for the Charlotte Hornets head coaching job, and the 2024 NFL Draft.
Frederik Andersen's 33 saves carried the Carolina Hurricanes to a 3-1 win as they grabbed the opening game of their best-of-7 Eastern Conference quarterfinal series with the New York Islanders. Evgeny Kuznetsov scored the opening goal within the first two minutes to give Carolina the 1-0 lead. His power play goal snapped a 14-game goal drought. He would add an assist on Stefan Noesen's 3rd period goal that put the Canes in front to stay. Noesen, too, ended a long goal drought having not scored in the last 20 games of the regular season. As it turns out, the last time Noesen scored was against Montreal on the night that Andersen made his return to the lineup on March 7. Coincidentally, that goal was also the eventual game-winner. Martin Necas added an empty net goal to close out the scoring. Game 2 is Monday night at PNC Arena
Tim Donnelly & Dennis Cox discuss if the Carolina Hurricanes continue their goalie rotation of Frederik Andersen & Pyotr Kochetkov during the Stanley Cup Playoffs to keep their rhythm & routine of the regular season.
The great philosopher Yogi Berra once said about something he felt had happened before…”it was deja vu all over again” -No one goes there anymore, it’s too crowded. -When you come to the fork in the road, take it. -It gets late early out there. -Half of baseball is 90% mental… Well, embrace your inner Yogi because the Carolina Hurricanes will be squaring off with the New York Islanders in the opening round of the playoffs for the second consecutive year. -The Isles won at New Jersey last night and the Rangers shut out Ottawa so…the fishermen clinched 3rd and the blue shirts won the presidents trophy… -Carolina went 2-1-1 against the Islanders. -Each team won both games on road ice. -Canes scored 16 goals, Islanders 14… -Frederik Andersen has not faced NYI this year. -Tonight the season finale in Columbus with it appears a skeleton crew for the Hurricanes… -Protect your top players from freak injury or let them roll out there because you’re looking at at least 3 off days, maybe as many as 5 before the playoffs begin… -Then again….the regret IF something were to happen….but who? We are 9 days away from the NFL draft…. -ESPN and others have produced more mock drafts over the last few days and there is a common theme… -Panthers TRADING the 1st pick of Day 2… -Can you get enough value? -What is the area you HAVE to address first? -ESPN has a mock draft simulator…. Duke basketball still waiting on a Jeremy Roach decision… -I have a source who says he’s coming back…but I also have a source who says he’s going to play his final season somewhere else (probably for less money than he could at Duke) -Brendan Marks has a great write up on the Duke roster and thinks either could happen but he expects JR3 to portal out of Durham. Proctor and Foster returning and a scholarship crunch with at least a couple of vets transferring in.
Andrei Svechnikov only missed one game, but the Hurricanes had been wihtout the real Andrei for the last several weeks. 17 seconds into their game with Columbus, Andrei scored past Malcom Subban and the Hurricanes were off and running in a 3-0 win. Sebastian Aho and Teuvo Teravainen also scored and Frederik Andersen made 23 saves for his 3rd shutout since returning to the lineup at the beginning of March.
Tim Donnelly & Dennis Cox discuss the Carolina Hurricanes as the Stanley Cup Playoffs approach, and how Frederik Andersen has established himself as the No. 1 goalie for head coach Rod Brind'Amour, but the Pyotr Kochetkov is just as capable of helping the Canes make run in the NHL Playoffs. Also, Tim & Dennis discuss how head coach Rod Brind'Amour needs to figure out when it comes to line combinations & power play units before the team heads to the playoffs.
The Carolina Hurricanes beat the Detroit Red Wings, 4-0, in what was a dominant game for Carolina with Frederik Andersen getting another shutout, and the line of Jake Guentzel, Sebastian Aho, and Seth Jarvis continuing to dominate as a line, accounting for another two goals. Also, Chris Lea, WRAL Sports joins Tim Donnelly from Dallas to preview NC State vs. Marquette, and Duke vs. Houston in the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA Tournament tonight.
Frederik Andersen's 31 saves led the Hurricanes to a 2-1 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs as the Canes swept the season series (3-0-0) from Toronto for the first time since 2014-2015. Brady Skjei scored 1:05 into the game and Sebastian Aho added his 31st goal of the season -- on the power play -- later in the first period and Andersen made it stand up. Carolina is within 1 point of the Rangers for the Metro lead with 10 games left in the season. Carolina will next play Tuesday night in Detroit.
Carolina Panthers head coach Dave Canales will speak at the NFL meetings on Tuesday. Tim Donnelly is hoping for authenticity from Canales, which is key for a first time head coach. Also, Carolina Hurricanes goalie Frederik Andersen is back and playing lights out in net for the Hurricanes, incling a 32-save effort in a 2-1 win on Sunday over the Toronto Maple Leafs.
The Hurricanes win a close game against a fellow playoff shoo-in. AP correspondent Dave Ferry reports.
Seth Jarvis ran his goal streak to 5 straight games with an overtime game-winner to give the Canes a 3-2 win over Philadelphia. Jarvis has 6 goals in the streak and 4 of them were game-winners. Frederik Andersen has won all five of his starts since returning to the lineup. He's allowed just 7 goals in those starts, with 1 shutout and a .947 save percentage. Jordan Martinook and Jalen Chatfield also scored for the Hurricanes who have now won 5 straight games. Carolina's magic number to clinch a playoff spot is 9. Any combination of 9 points earned by the Hurricanes or not earned by Washington will clinch a postseason spot for the 6th straight year. Carolina plays in Washington Friday night.
Evgeny Kuznetsov scored his first goal with the Canes and added an assist as Carolina thumped the Panthers, 4-0. It was the second time in three weeks that the Hurricanes shut out the Panthers in Raleigh. Seth Jarvis scored with 49 seconds left in the 1st period to give Carolina the lead. Martin Necas and Andrei Svechnikov added goals as well. Frederik Andersen made 10 of his 21 saves in the 1st period as he held the Canes in the game until they could get to their game. Once they did, it was a pretty dominant, controlling performance.
Sebastian Aho, Andre Svechnikov and Teuvo Teravainen combined for 8 points in the Canes 7-2 win over the Calgary Flames. Aho set up Jordan Martinook for the first goal, scored the second after a Flames turnover and then set up Svechnikov to make it 4-0 early in the 2nd period. Jalen Chatfield and Seth Jarvis each had a goal and an assist. Frederik Andersen turned aside 17 shots for his second win since returning from the injured list. Brent Burns also scored for the Hurricanes, snapping an 8-game goal drought.
Tim Donnelly & Dennis Cox share their thoughts on the Carolina Hurricanes also trading for center Evgeny Kuznetsov from the Washington Capitals at the 2024 NHL Trade Deadline, but also the return of Frederik Andersen in net for the Hurricanes after missing four months due to a blood-clotting issue.

Tim Donnelly says Pyotr Kochetkov played phenomenal for the Carolina Hurricanes in a 1-0 shutout win over the New Jersey Devils, but with the injuries to Antti Raanta & health concerns of Frederik Andersen, and Kochetkov's inconsistent play, the Hurricanes need to look hard for a goaltender at the 2024 NHL Trade Deadline.
Former NFL executive Michael Lombardi, author of "Football Done Right," joined Tim Donnelly to discuss the Carolina Panthers, including questioning the culture set by owner David Tepper, questioning the hiring of Dan Morgan, where the Panthers can improve their roster for head coach Dave Canales and Bryce Young, and why the Carolina Panthers should hold on to Brian Burns & Derrick Brown. Also, Carolina Hurricanes goalie Frederik Andersen has been cleared to resume on-ice activities as he looks to come back from his blood clotting issue.

Jeff and Elliotte discuss why, despite the New Jersey Devils' struggles, it wouldn't make sense for them to make a coaching change right now. They dive into a penalty filled affair between Vegas and Tampa on Thursday night and they throw out some of their favourite Hart Trophy candidates (27:25). Elliotte expands on some questions about the future of Frederik Andersen in Carolina (37:55) and also talks about Nolan Patrick's future in hockey (40:57). The guys discuss John Gruden (the hockey one) possibly becoming the Head Coach of the Ottawa Senators (45:55) and touch on Devon Toews going after his own players through the media (48:21). Jeff and Elliotte wrap the podcast by vouching for Jaromir Jagr to be eligible for the Hockey Hall of Fame now, rather than in another three years after he suited up for Kladno again (1:19:47).The guys answer your questions in the Montana's Thought Line (56:31).Email the podcast at 32thoughts@sportsnet.ca or call the Montana's Thought Line at 1-833-311-3232 and leave us a voicemail. This podcast was produced and mixed by Dominic Sramaty and hosted by Jeff Marek and Elliotte Friedman. The views and opinions expressed in this podcast are those of the hosts and guests and do not necessarily reflect the position of Rogers Sports & Media or any affiliates.
The Carolina Hurricanes lost to the Washington Capitals, 2-1, in a shootout Sunday night. It was the third time in the last four games at PNC Arena that Carolina lost after regulation. The Hurricanes are now 5-3 after regulation on the season, 1-1 in the shootout. Sebastian Aho scored Carolina's only goal and Pyotr Kochetkov made 20 saves and is 2-0-1 with a .960 save percentage in his last three starts. And, because the team waived veteran goalie Antti Raanta this weekend and sent him to the minor leagues, they're going to rely heavily on Kochetkov until Frederik Andersen can return to action. He's missed the last 6 weeks dealing with a blood clotting issue, but has been cleared to resume workouts and could be back on the ice in the next week. However, it's still unlikely that we see him before the start of February.
Why have the Canes been so good in overtime? What is it that makes Sebastian Aho and Martin Necas so dynamic during three-on-three play? The guys answer those, plus look at the goaltending situation with Frederik Andersen out of the picture.
Pete, Nick and Anna identify the best fantasy waiver wire pickups around the NHL for Week 5, including replacements for injured Jack Hughes of the Devils and Adam Fox of the Rangers. Options include in-house plays like Dawson Mercer, Erik Gustafsson, K'Andre Miller and outside skaters like Ryan O'Reilly, Tommy Novak, Pavel Mintyukov, Casey Mittelstadt, Quinton Byfield and more. Other players and topics discussed were Frederik Andersen's injury concern and what it means for Pyotr Kochetkov and Jaroslav Halak (signed PTO contract with Hurricanes), the Ducks' recent comeback wins and return of John Gibson and Alex Killorn from injuries, Calder Trophy candidates, the struggles of the Oilers and Sharks and more.
