In homage to BBC Radio 4’s ‘Desert Island Discs’, our guests identify their students’ lightbulb moment (when their students ‘were getting it’), a teaching prop or pedagogy to take to their Treasure Islands together with a luxury item off duty. This episode features: Ashwini Datt, University of Auckland, NZ Lightbulb moment: exposing staff (as students) with a really badly designed quiz with bad instructions and design. Staff also became really competitive wanting to hear the right answer – and so it really drives through how their students might experience this. Teaching prop or pedagogy: I have been known to take a dunking bird to explain inquiry-based learning to participants with a scientific background. It’s good we can match our methods to suit our audience. Luxury item: I went old school. I am passionate about plants, planting and gardening! I am going to take a coconut. In my free time, I like to be off technology. It reminds me of palm trees from my home. They are incredibly versatile – you can eat it, drink it or do crafts with it! Danielle Hinton, University of Birmingham, UK Lightbulb moment:  Staff being students and exploring cross-disciplinary teaching – exploring how staff feel when they are suddenly the students and how that in turn changes their outlook on teaching. Teaching prop or pedagogy: It has to be a big bag of Lego! It gives our participants permission to explore/play and think outside the box with Lego Serious Play. Luxury item: Am I allowed three items? The most expensive pillow that money can buy for relaxation. As an ex-librarian, books are important: the Bible to connect with my faith, and my father – who is really ill at the moment - his PhD so that I can connect with him through his work. Jenni Carr, London School of Economics, UK Lightbulb moment: the famous biscuit exercise: getting staff participants to write a set of assessment criteria as to how you would assess a plate of biscuits. Teaching prop or pedagogy: I’ll take Natasha’s flip charts and Danielle’s Lego and through in some more craft stuff from my craft cupboard: playdoh and glitter pens. Crayons stop people chasing the objectively ‘correct’ way of doing things. These creative methods can push people outside their comfort zone to learning and discovery. Luxury item: music is my everything, so if I am allowed, I would like to take my online music streaming service. Natasha Taylor, RMIT, Australia Lightbulb moment: we need to be confident in what we do, just invest and come out at the other end. Rebellion and battleground Teaching prop or pedagogy: this year I really struggled without flip charts, coloured pens as it is the best way to get students to huddle together in small groups, to discuss and their get ideas down. Much better than their digital equivalents. Luxury item: if I was stuck on an island, wouldn’t a drone with a camera be good to the island from up high and see how the landscape changes with the passing seasons?

In homage to BBC Radio 4’s ‘Desert Island Discs’, our four invited lecturers identify a teaching prop or pedagogy to take to their Treasure Islands, for the cherished face to face contact time with students on campus, together with a luxury item for a bit of downtime from teaching. This episode features: Marieke Riethof: Modern Languages and Cultures (Latin American Politics) Lightbulb moment: getting students to show understanding of their target culture by working in shared collaborative documents – which in the new online setting can work really well with students producing great shared documents or presentations in different formats. Teaching prop or pedagogy: assuming the role of guide, taking students on a journey of discovery on their own, helping them find treasures. Luxury item: my greatest discovery of the pandemic: listening to podcasts whilst walking or cooking. Chris Barlow: Accountancy Lightbulb moment: integrating skills development in modules on an ongoing basis to promote student engagement. Teaching prop or pedagogy: Kahoot quiz to keep students engaged. Luxury item: mobile phone to check football results, keeping up with the news and social media. Jennifer Klunder-Rosser: Nursing Lightbulb moment: one of the most fun I have had was planning a role play for students, creating a humanitarian warzone for a global healthcare context, with student groups representing different global healthcare organisations, having to research and prepare how they would act in specific scenarios, culminating in presenting their response to the press. This enjoyable teaching experience also helped me ease into my own preferred style of teaching (active learning). Teaching prop or pedagogy: can I please choose two: active learning and a skeleton (to help me point out trauma injuries). Luxury item: absolutely no tech! I like to go running in my shoes, leaving everything behind (though a possible tech I could use is a bit of Strava for motivation) Joel Haddley Lightbulb moment: discovering the value of designing high-stake, high-value assessments which help students assimilate and synthetise knowledge; moving away from high-stake, lower-value assessments. The former seems to promote deeper student engagement, whilst the latter attracts strategic engagement. Teaching prop or pedagogy: Mobius assessment platform – this is a specific platform for mathematics, which enables true randomisation of mathematical problems. It promotes student collaboration versus collusion. Students used to ask of each other: what result did you get? Now they ask: what method did you use to work it out? Luxury item: something that would benefit all those around me too: coffee equipment fresh coffee beans, grinder and my Aeropress. Any sparks? The discovery that the original Desert Island is in Chile (one of Marieke’s country of research), called Juan Fernandez island. We bartered teaching ideas: Mobius might work really well for accounting, and Jennifer’s role play approach is what Marieke uses with her students asking them to negotiate democratic transitions in Latin America. We discussed the challenges and opportunities of doing role-play, group discussions in an online Covid setting. As for luxuries: we all covet Joel’s coffee knowledge and Aeropress machine. Joel has offered to treat us to a round once ‘this’ is all over (putting it into writing so that he cannot go back on this offer).

In homage to BBC Radio 4’s ‘Desert Island Discs’, our three invited lecturers identify a teaching prop or pedagogy to take to their Treasure Islands, for the cherished face to face contact time with students on campus, together with a luxury item for a bit of downtime from teaching. This episode features: Katherine Whitehurst: Communication & Media Lightbulb moment: ‘clicking through group work’, showing cross-group ideas to promote student engagement Teaching prop or pedagogy: any online platforms that enable collaborative group work and projects to make the above lightbulb moment possible (e.g. MS Teams). Luxury item: if my husband is not an item, I would like to take ‘a kitchen’ to cook as this is how I relax. Matt Murphy: Mechanical, Materials & Aerospace Engineering Lightbulb moment: when it sinks in for students that they are undertaking a real, open-ended professional engineering project, and that staff trust them to take responsibility for their own success. Teaching prop or pedagogy: focusing on what the student will be doing (Thomas Shuell, 1986); design activities first and fit in lectures around the activities, not the other way round! Luxury item: Liverpool ‘urban cycling safaris’ modified to explore our treasure island. Mathew Flynn: Music Industry Lighbulb moment: focus on what students need to know at that point, rather than what I think I need to tell them! Teaching prop or pedagogy: all we need is a marker pen and provocation to engage students in worthwhile conversation. Luxury item: surprise, surprise, it’s music: my Spotify account. Any sparks? Post podcast, we talked lots about how we listen to music, how Spotify has changed the way we listen to music and the way in which vinyl is reclaiming the ritual of listening in our home. And a Canadian storyteller, Stuart McLean, humorous VinylCafe stories whose humour Katherine recommends.

In response to Covid 19, immediate action had to be taken to move the English Language Centre's courses online. We had less than 1 month to prepare for student induction. This involved redesigning the student experience, implementing widespread pedagogical changes, and, beyond the initial phase, reflecting on and improving our processes and product. In this case study podcast, Gary, Katie & Seán discuss and reflect on the development and implementation processes. They are joined by Michelle & Aldona who give further insight from the management and teacher perspectives. Gary Ellis & Seán Timon are teachers and technology enhanced learning specialists at the ELC. Katie Hudson is a Pre-sessional EAP teacher & course developer. Aldona Norkus is a Pre-sessional EAP teacher. Michelle Dwyer is the ELC Director.
