The Video Monsters are heading to Sweden for the next stop on our tour of International Horror films. This time we will discuss the chilly, isolating vampire film LET THE RIGHT ONE IN (2008), from director Tomas Alfredson. On the way, we'll make a brief pit stop in New Mexico to talk about Matt Reeves's American remake LET ME IN (2010), and compare both adaptations to John Ajvide Lindqvist's original novel to see which version of this haunting love story we find most affecting. So grab your Rubik's cube, take off your shoes, come in through the window, and make yourself at home as we invite you to our in-depth discussion of LET THE RIGHT ONE IN! This time on the Rocky Mountain Writer podcast, a chat with the co-editors of the next Rocky Mountain Fiction Writers short story anthology, to be published in 2024. Those co-editors are Linda Ditchkus and Paul Martz.   Linda (L.V.) Ditchkus has written her whole life. But until eight years ago, her writing was either technical, scholarly, or in travel magazines. In 2015, she jumped into novel writing with both feet. After drafting her first chapter, which only amounted to a few hundred words, she realized she had plenty to learn. So she found a network of writing friends—many through RMFW—who gave her writing tips and pointed her toward writing resources like how-to books and classes. She's grateful for her fantastic writing pals. Being a judge for the 2022 Self Published Science Fiction Competition and a 2023 youth writing competition has deepened her understanding of what makes books and stories stand out. Since her Sasquatch Series won First Place in the Colorado Authors League 2021 Book Awards for Sci-Fi and her short story was included in last year's RMFW's anthology (Bizarre Bazaar), Linda plans to stop calling herself a debut author. In addition to marketing the Sasquatch Series, she's working on a new series about two time-traveling women from the distant future working desperately to repopulate the world with men. Both are determined to succeed. But various groups, including terrorist factions and their government, build barriers against their success. When Linda's not writing, she leads adventure travel trips for the Colorado Mountain Club and travels with her husband. She's been to more than 100 countries and hiked or climbed in many of those. Linda and her husband live selfish lives (without plants or pets) above 7,000 feet in the Colorado Rockies. ++ Paul Martz has been writing science fiction short stories for five years, though his love for sci fi began decades earlier. When he was six, he saw 2001: A Space Odyssey on the big screen, which lead him to a collection of Arthur C. Clarke's short stories--and a lifelong insatiable appetite for mind-bending sci fi.  But his hobbies and interests extend far beyond the science fiction galaxy. He has authored books on programming and holds a data encryption patent. Like all true nerds, he runs his own web server. He recently learned to read braille and can solve a tactile Rubik's Cube. He has traveled the world to view multiple total solar eclipses. He has a life-long interest in music. He has ripped his entire vinyl collection to MP3, recorded his own original digital compositions, and played drums since childhood. Currently, he's teaching himself to play piano. Paul lives in Erie Colorado with his wife and loyal cat. In a little over two years, they doubled the 20-year-old church to nearly forty members and raised up a full-time local couple to lead the church.  Listen as they share:     Their “One Person a Day” motto     The importance of finishing like you start     Three proverbs that have guided them to raise three kids to follow Christ     The secret of doing ministry after working secular jobs Please register for the Climb Conference!  Go to RobSkinner.Com and register today!

In this episode, we talk about keeping things real. Sometimes things are not pretty, and we must take it at face value. There is no need to twist reality like a Rubik's cube to complete a color and find a positive angle to everything that happens to you while meditating on the mantra that "Everything happens for a reason." Does it, really? Or are you fooling yourself into thinking a downright negative situation is meant to happen to you? You can take it as it is, but you don't need to wallow in it. You can still react in a way that results in something positive for you. You can still be positive about the big picture without losing touch with day-to-day reality. Here's the list of episodes related to today's discussion, and we highly recommend listening to them as well:#134 | Your Imagination is More Powerful Than You Think… - http://bit.ly/3XiO8KS #106 | The Difference in a Fixed vs. Growth Mindset Culture - https://apple.co/3ZEnuhg _________________Connect with Emilia, Bianca & the EVOLVE VENTURES Community:Website: www.evolveventurestech.com@EvolveVentures on Instagram@EvolveVenturesTech on Facebook (Public Page)Evolve Ventures Society (Private Facebook Group)@EvolvewithEmilia on Instagram / @Evolvewith Emilia on TikTok@EvolvewithBianca on InstagramConnect with Emilia & Bianca from Evolve Ventures for FREEShow notes:[3:02] Everything in life DOESN'T happen for a reason.[6:22] It is not about giving something a positive twist[9:36] "Life's a sh!t sandwich. An open place to admit no one really knows what they're doing. This week Christina P is joined by comedian and mom dad, Chad Daniels. These parents talk about the chaos of raising boys and their kids' obsession with their own wieners. Marriage is hard when they realize the vast inequities when raising kids. On top of that, they talk about the challenge of balancing parenting and continuing to have dreams and individuality. There is no blueprint for parenting, but there are some hard no's like X-rated rubiks cubes. Main Mommy introduces Dad Chaniels to follow-up topics like wienie shrinkers and funny trauma. PSA: No one wants to hear about genitals and sex from their parents. Christina P. wants to hear from you since she is seriously lacking in cool mom friends. From the archive: Why do we dream?

Many Minds

We're off this week but are excited to share a thought-provoking conversation from our archives, about the long-standing puzzle of why we (and other creatures) dream. Happy holidays from the Many Minds team! --- You may not remember much about it, but chances are last night you went on a journey. As you slept, your brain concocted a story—maybe a sprawl of interconnected stories. It took you to some unreal places, gave you superpowers, unearthed old acquaintances, and twisted your perceptions. Meanwhile, billions of brains all around you, up and down the tree of life, were probably doing something very similar—dreaming, that is. But why do we do this? What could possibly be the function of these nightly ramblings? My guest today is Dr. Erik Hoel. He is a writer and a neuroscientist at Tufts University. In a paper published earlier this year, Erik presented a new theory of why we (and other creatures) dream. It's called the “over-fitted brain hypothesis”; the basic idea is that dreaming helps us stay cognitively limber, adaptable—less tied to the particulars of our previous experiences. Erik and I discuss how he came to this new theory. We talk about how his account develops an analogy between the "overfitting" problem in machine learning and the "overfitting" problem that biological brains face as well. We discuss how his hypothesis can account for the bizarre nature of dream experience. And we consider Erik's provocative suggestion that dreams are really just one type of fiction—biological fictions, if you like—and that other types of fiction may serve similar purposes. Erik is a fascinating, wide-ranging thinker (there aren't a lot of neuroscientists who also write novels). And this is a conversation I'll be chewing on for some time. It takes on one of those timeless questions about human experience—why we dream—from an angle that feels fresh and energizing. Alright friends, on to my conversation with Dr. Erik Hoel. Hope you enjoy it!   The paper we discuss is available here. A transcript of this episode is available here.   Notes and links 4:00 – Dreams have been in the news recently, with reports of an uptick in strange dreams during the pandemic. 9:30 – An early study on “dream deprivation.” 11:00 – An article on the idea that dreams serve memory consolidation. 23:00 – A study showing that we don't dream about reading or writing. 27:30 – An attempt to solve a Rubik's cube with a robot hand. 32:00 – An influential paper articulating the synaptic homeostasis hypothesis. 38:30 – A recent paper on the question of whether animals like octopuses dream. 42:00 – We've discussed Pinker's “music is like cheesecake” analogy in previous episodes, most recently in our discussion of the evolution of music. 46:00 – For more on these ideas, see Dr. Hoel's essay ‘Enter the Supersensorium'—and be sure to check out his new novel The Revelations! Técnica microcoches: Raros, originales, ingeniosos

Valoro mucho en los coches la originalidad. ¿Y cuál es el tipo de coche más original? ¿Los de competición? No, porque hay un reglamento que respetar. ¿Los deportivos? Pues… no siempre. 1. Iso Isetta (1953). Puerta delantera. 2. Biscuter (1953). ¡Sin marcha atrás! 3. Scan Inter 175A Berline (1953). Soluciones náuticas. 4. Alba Regia (1955). El cubo de Ernö Rubik. 5. Heinkel Kabine (1956). Una cabina de avión. 6. Goggomobil (1957). Aspirante coche. 7. ACMA Vespa 400 (1958). Más de 100 km/h. 8. Messerschmitt FMR Tg500 (1958). Biplaza en tándem. 9. Peel P50 (1962). ¡Un coche de 1,3 m2! 10. Vipo (1980). ¡Moderno! Y, por cierto, nunca he conducido ninguno… ¡a lo mejor por eso me atrae! This week, hosts Brent Butterworth and Dennis Burger visit the Audio Science Review forums to shine a spotlight on an overlooked comment by Dr. Sean Olive. The topic? Who should and shouldn't be included in listening panels and whether a university janitor's opinions about good sound are as valid as those of your average AES member (4:28 to 21:25).  Next up (22:25 to 39:08), they opine about something of a unicorn: an article about audiophilia in a completely mainstream publication. In this case, it's a piece by Sasha Frere-Jones in the latest issue of Harper's titled "Corner Club Cathedral Cocoon.” In this week's final segment (39:52 to 57:34), Brent and Dennis watch a new episode of SoundStage! Real Hi-Fi, in which founder Doug Schneider discusses what skateboarding and hi-fi have in common, and why the resurgence of popularity of the former is good for the latter.  Sources: "Headphones and the Harman target curve" on Audio Science Review: https://www.audiosciencereview.com/forum/index.php?threads/headphones-and-the-harman-target-curve.17914/page-18&mibextid=Zxz2cZ#post-1381960 "Where Are We At With The Harman Curve?" by Brent Butterworth: https://www.soundstagesolo.com/index.php/features/217-where-are-we-at-with-the-harman-curve "The Relationship between Perception and Measurement of Headphone Sound Quality" by Sean Olive: https://seanolive.blogspot.com/2013/04/the-relationship-between-perception-and.html "Corner Club Cathedral Cocoon” by Sasha Frere-Jones: https://harpers.org/archive/2022/12/corner-club-cathedral-cocoon-audiophilia-and-its-discontents/ “View of the World from 9th Avenue: by Saul Steinberg: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/View_of_the_World_from_9th_Avenue “Hi-Fi Will Never Die, Because Skateboarding Didn't - SoundStage! Let's get into the nitty gritty of our holiday traditions—real tree or a fake tree? Love egg nog or hate it? Decorating to the hilt or like to keep it minimalist? In this kickoff episode of our Untraditional Traditions series, we're doing a deep dive into some of the traditions many of us may observe at the holidays, and a few we might want to try!  Like, how many of you put up your Christmas tree at Halloween and take it down on Valentine's Day? Well, our guest this week does and he just gave us all permission to do that same (you're welcome). Because that's the fun thing about traditions—we can take the ones that mean the most to us and build off them to create something that really reflects who we are. And if our old traditions leave us feeling flat, there are always new things to explore. Brian Earl, the host of the “Christmas Past” podcast is the perfect guide as we begin this series. Brian dedicates hours of research to uncovering the roots behind many of our beloved (and maybe to some, annoying) holiday traditions. Ever wonder why we put up a Christmas tree in the first place? He lays it out for us, along with many other interesting facts around traditions. Also, he and Jen reminisce about being kids in the 70's, 80's and 90's and the nostalgia around gifts we received and the Christmas commercials that used to barrage us on TV. (Rubik's Cube, anyone? How about Teddy Ruxpin)? As they wind through the nostalgia of traditions past, Jen and Brian also talk about creating new traditions, and how valuable those are and will become to us and our people. Brian's years of research have resulted in a book about all the fascinating, sometimes really surprising stories behind our holiday traditions, why we should care about them, and what they mean. And all of that worked its way into Christmas.” - Brian Earl “Christmas for your great-great-grandparents was very different from what we celebrate. They would take a look at our celebration and sort of recognize it as Christmas, but not really.” - Brian Earl “During the Christmas season, anything in my community that's going on, any Christmas thing, we're always running around to it, and [my wife] gets a little tired, because she loves Christmas too, but very few people love it as much as I do.” - Brian Earl “Every year we write the next chapter in the story of Christmas. And I mean that on a small scale–you write the next chapter in your family's Christmas. But then collectively, with changing our behaviors, and just what kinds of things we want as a culture for Christmas, we write the next chapter collectively as the larger Christmas-celebrating community.” - Brian Earl   Guest's Links Brian's Website Brian's Instagram Brian's Facebook The Christmas Past Podcast   Resources Mentioned in This Episode For the Love Podcast episode with “Deck the Hallmark” Christmas Past: The Fascinating Stories Behind Our Favorite Holiday's Traditions by Brian Earl   Connect with Jen!Jen's website Jen's Instagram Jen's Twitter Jen's Facebook Jen's YouTube
