Safe as Milk by Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band - Ep. 93

"Safe as Milk" is the debut album by Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band, released in 1967. The record is a wild blend of blues, psychedelic rock, and experimental music, showcasing the unique and often eccentric vision of frontman Don Van Vliet (aka Captain Beefheart). While rooted in traditional electric blues, Safe as Milk already hints at the avant-garde style that would define Beefheart's later work. The album features intricate guitar work, odd rhythms, and surreal, poetic lyrics. It's more accessible than Beefheart's later records like Trout Mask Replica, but still packed with creative risks and strange beauty. The album features a young Ry Cooder on guitar, whose contributions helped shape the sound and keep it grounded, even as Beefheart pushed boundaries.Though it wasn't a commercial hit at the time, Safe as Milk has since become a cult classic and an essential record for fans of psychedelic and experimental rock. It marks the beginning of one of the most iconoclastic careers in 20th-century music.Listen to the album on Apple Music Listen to the album on SpotifyWhat did you think of this album? Send us a text! We tackle the title track this week with the help of old friend Lalo Fierro, who, even as a seasoned gigging bassist, maintains an uneven relationship with Claypool's bass playing, mostly due to its unpredictable nature, which is emblematic of today's track. We also consider the eternal question: Do you humor the crusty old guy's stories, or do you not engage? Plus, commentary on the recently completed drum search series (more to come?!) and killer live cuts. Buy me a theremin.Get involvedInstagramFacebookEmailBurn your money

In this episode we welcome acclaimed novelist Michel Faber to RBP's Hammersmith HQ and ask him about his new book ... as well as about a 1979 interview he did with the young Nick Cave. Barney gets the ball rolling by asking the author of Under the Skin and The Crimson Petal and the White what he set out to do with Listen: On Music, Sound and Us. Viewing music through a variety of prisms — from nostalgia and snobbery to racial bias and auditory biology — was the book at least partly an exercise in demystification? A stimulating conversation unfolds as Michel answers questions about "MOJO-fication", vinyl fetishisation, and live performance. A tangent on tinnitus takes us to his memories of seeing (and hearing) one of the Birthday Party's last shows... and waking up temporarily deaf the next morning. Which in turn leads to discussion of the interview our guest did as a student at Melbourne University with the pre-Birthday Party Boys Next Door, and then to clips from a 1995 audio interview in which Nick Cave answers Andy Gill's questions about Murder Ballads and Kylie Minogue. Finally the "panel" considers the week's featured artist (and a key influence on the early Birthday Party): the archetypal "MOJO-fied" cult hero who traded musically under the moniker Captain Beefheart — and whose exceptional paintings as Don Van Vliet feature in a new exhibition at Mayfair's Michael Werner Gallery. After Mark quotes from recently-added library pieces on Little Walter, Sylvester, Ornette Coleman and Björk, Jasper wraps up the episode with his thoughts on articles about the aforementioned Kylie Minogue, Goodie Mob and The Face. Many thanks to special guest Michel Faber. Artist, musician, academic, and member of legacy American experimental band ONO Conor Tomaka joins the show once more, but with a specific purpose this time around. John Frusciante is already a God-level figure in the oeuvre of Safety Propaganda, but this time we are going back to the virtuoso guitarist of the Chili Peppers and experimental solo artist's infamous and masterful first two albums: Niandra Lades and Usually just a T-Shirt and Smile from the Streets you Hold. Both of these albums were recorded on a 4-track tape recorded in the early '90s when Frusciante was closing in on death due to intensely high and daily usages of heroin and crack cocaine. Video documents of the artist at his home show the once handsome and vivacious punk rock LA kid as a death shadow of his former self: cheeks sank all the way into his jaw, teeth falling out, ghastly white and pallid, anything resembling muscle tone vanished. He was disintegrated, and these albums are gorgeous-avant pop ballads disintegrating into the abyss. Niandra was partly recorded in Frusciante's bedroom at the mansion where he and the Chi-Peps recoded Blood Sugar Sex Magick at night time, and the second more ambient and abstract side was recorded after he'd left the band and plunged into addiction. Smile was recorded during similar sessions, he says, and includes vocals by the ghost of the late movie star and brother to the current greatest American actor Joaquin – River Phoenix. While both albums are masterpieces in differing ways, channeling Frusciante's enthusiasm for Beefheart, Zappa, Syd Barrett, and other weirdo troubadours, it is only Niandra that is still reissued and available for purchase. Frusciante has let Smile fall into obscurity – perhaps it is just too painful for him to listen to. Hail Frusciante. After the Rising Sons disbanded, Cooder quickly became a sought-after session musician. His bottleneck sounds were new and unique at the time. Saluton, estas mi Tyson Saner and you are listening to Succotash. If this is your first time here, welcome. I hope you will find something to enjoy in the soundcast you are about to listen to. If you have listened to Succotash before, welcome back! Thank you for choosing to spend your time with us AGAIN. If the time you listened before was last week's episode, show 324 called “Debate, Argument, Brits & Smut” hosted by show creator and executive producer Marc Hershon, then you know why you are not hearing him in this episode. Incidentally, in that episode you heard the clips from the soundcasts If I Were You, The Legal Geeks, Off Menu, and Pornomedy…and you can still find that episode in the archive at www.succotashshow.com if you would like to hear it again. We've been alternating the hosting duties pretty consistently for the last 2 1/2 years of our 11+ years of this show…so that is why this week's episode, #325, is hosted by me…Tyson Saner.…and in this episode I've got clips from the soundcasts Word In Your Ear, Going Deep from "Earwolf Presents", and Bubble. I've got another classic advertisement from our 100% FAKE SPONSOR "Henderson's Pants" and their legendary Flying Jodphurs for you later in the program. CLIPS Word In Your EarFrom the show description for Word In Your Ear, we learn that Mark Ellen and David Hepworth have been talking about and writing about music together and individually for a collective eighty years in magazines like Smash Hits, Mojo and The Word and on radio and TV programmes like "Rock On", "Whistle Test" and VH-1. Over 13 years ago, when working on the late magazine The Word, they began producing podcasts. Some listeners have been kind enough to say these have been very special to them. When the magazine folded in 2012 they kept the spirit of those podcasts alive in regular Word In Your Ear evenings in which they spoke to musicians and authors in front of an audience. Our clip comes from the episode that dropped just a couple of weeks ago, on September 27, 2022, entitled "Hilary Mantel, Zappa track or ad slogan and the day Beefheart sold Aldous Huxley a vacuum-cleaner". The snippet we have is from a bit of fun near the beginning of the program followed by a bit of seriousness and some thoughts on how commentary and narrative are intertwined…is how I interpret what I am hearing. Going DeepFrom the description: Welcome to the office of America's "most acclaimed couples therapist," Diana Deep (Lily Sullivan). Listen and learn as she counsels couples using her infamous “hands-on” approach to help husbands, wives, lovers, thruples, first-daters, booty calls, and on-again off-again sexters. This improv comedy podcast parodies couples therapy in ways that will make you laugh, cry, and go "Deep" into your own relationships. The clip was harvested from the episode entitled "Culture Shock Catharsis with Nick Wiger & Heather Anne Campbell", in which Dr. Deep speaks with Helga (Heather Anne Campbell) and Guy (Nick Wiger) about their disagreement over Helga's fifth oven purchase. Dr. Deep leads this session down the proverbial "trail of breadcrumbs" to reveal the lies at the core of their marriage. (This episode and other episodes are in the "Earwolf Presents" listings at this time but are originally in the "Stitcher Exclusive" category, but if you want access to what I presume is all of the show's episodes then you will need access to Stitcher Premium.) Bubble The show's description goes a little something like this: Welcome to Fairhaven, a literal Bubble of corporate utopia set amid the wild, goblin-infested Brush. The first scripted comedy series from Maximum Fun, Bubble was created by Jordan Morris (Jordan and Jesse Go), and tells the tale of a small band of monster killers struggling to make ends meet and find love in a nightmarish version of the gig economy. Starring: Alison Becker (Parks and Recreation), Keith Powell (30 Rock), Cristela Alonzo (Cristela), Eliza Skinner (The Late Late Show) and Mike Mitchell (Love), with appearances by Judy Greer, John Hodgman, Martin Starr, Paul F. Tompkins, and many, many more. I clipped this snip from back in the before time - June of 2018 - their very first installment entitled "Huntrs". Morgan, who is good at killing monsters, gets a new gig and a new partner. And that's all I have for you in this episode. I do hope you find something that you enjoy or at least to be interesting enough to experience again. I've already got ideas for what I will clip for the next episode I bring you, but that isn't for a couple weeks in my timeframe so why even bring it up? Maybe it is the holiday season that is rapidly approaching, encroaching…whatever you prefer. I think about time a LOT lately. That is to say, I consider how it can pass without notice sometimes, and every now and then something notable occurs which makes me stop and consider how fast life really seems to be happening. My parents just celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with my brother and I and our spouses, and that too was over in an eyeblink. Now I am here writing about it, and in a moment I will be done writing about it…and soon I will read these words into a microphone, edit all the audio together, and create a presentation that you will experience in more-or-less a half an hour of your life. So thank you for spending that time listening to us. I recently added a few new links to my content over at www.tysonsaner.com including my TikTok and my new Redbubble store. I might as well mention that because you are already here and listening so I'd be a fool to not make the best of that opportunity. Thank you for listening, be decent to each other, check this feed next week for show #326 hosted by Marc Hershon, and if you think we are good enough to share with other people then we would be forever grateful to you if you were to pass the Succotash. — Tyson Saner

In powerful pursuit of amusement and distraction we aim the piercing supertrouper of scrutiny this week in the direction of … … why Ry Cooder MUST write a memoir. … records that sounded like nothing you'd ever heard before, eg the Message by Grandmaster Flash and Donna Summer's I Feel Love.   ... nighttime footage of the State Funeral rehearsal. … why ‘Delhi Crime' on TV makes the Wire's Baltimore look like Stoke Poges. … dinner with the “fantastically indiscreet” Tony King. … why Hilary Mantel was such a phenomenal writer – and an extract that demonstrates it. … the return of the Stackwaddy game: James Brown/Frank Zappa track or advertising slogan? … Beefheart selling Aldous Huxley a vacuum cleaner. Plus … birthday patron Ed Newman beams in from his shift at the Glasgow Royal Infirmary with thoughts about Ravel's Bolero, Dylan and Beatles podcasts and an inspired music book idea with a medical twist that someone must – MUST! – publish!Grab your EXCLUSIVE NordVPN Deal by going to https://nordvpn.com/yourear to get up a Huge Discount off your NordVPN Plan + 4 months for free! This month we're heading back to 1978 to listen to the first radio broadcast of The Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy, tow fake icebergs to Sydney Harbour, & search for Charlie Chaplin's coffin. We'll also be talking about unexpected Burmese protest anthems, Tracey's assassination attempts on late 80s Stourbridge based indie bands, and lots and lots of Disco. We've each chosen our 10 favourite songs of the year and sent them over to Ian's wife Lydia, who put the playlists together and distributed them so we were each given a playlist of the 20 songs from the other two hosts, along with our own 10. We then ranked the playlists in order of preference and sent them to Colin's wife Helen, who totalled up the points and worked out the order. Helen also joined us on the episode to read out the countdown, which we found out as we recorded so all reactions are genuine. Now, admittedly, in parts we're a little bit brutal to some of the songs in the list as we're three separate people with differing music tastes, but please remember that to be in this episode at all the songs have to have been in one of our top 10's of that year. Bands featured in this episode include (In alphabetical order, no spoilers here!) - Dr. Alimantado, Captain Beefheart & The Magic Band, Boney M., Kate Bush, Buzzcocks, The Cars, Chic, The Clash, Clout, Elvis Costello & The Attractions, Dean Friedman, Andrew Gold, Japan, Kansas, Kraftwerk, Magazine, The Only Ones, Pere Ubu, Public Image Ltd., Gerry Rafferty, Chris Rea, Santa Esmerelda, Steel Pulse, Television, Throbbing Gristle, Johnny Thunders, Van Halen, Jeff Wayne, Wire, & Warren Zevon. Today's guest is Jacob Campbell, the son of Legendary Surfcraft designer Malcom Campbell. Malcom and his brother Duncan, together created the "BONZER" surfboard in the 70's. It was a revolutionary surf design that first used the use of side fins adding to the single fin thus creating the first 3 fin system. This unique design was the first of its kind progressing the sport forward in more ways than one. The speed that the Campbell Brothers were experiencing on the BONZER could not be denied. This design changed surfing forever! Malcom had a son named Jacob. Jacob grew up in a very creative household. Lots of music played in the house, and it sunk into Jacobs brain. Jacob grew up absorbing all types of groovy vibes and eventually started searching out rare hard to find obscure cuts. He would go on to make mixes for friends and family. These music mixes were good with deep cuts. If you are a fan of new music, than Jacob is a lovely fellow to know. With the help of the Internet, Jacob was able find and share music like never before. He took advantage of that and theres a deep love there, and the love continues to grow, and he shares the love and he shares the stoke. His passion for music turned into a Podcast and then a regular radio gig on terrestrial radio Central Coast Radio "97./107.9" " The Rock" (Morro Bay) Jacob Campbell now lives in Oahu, Hawaii. He lived and worked in and around Haleiwa and worked at his uncles Famous surf shack "Cafe Haleiwa" It is there where Jacob met his wife and started a little family on the hill. He now shapes under the family name and is the representative for "Campbell Brothers Hawaii". He broadcasts live from his home studio for his radio show in California. He continues to share music, live the stoke and love the BEEFHEART! Jacob has been my number one way I find amazing new music and has been 90% of the cuts I use for this Podcast. I love the instrumentals, the weird stuff and the groovy spaced out and beyond. Its all there. It was a absolute treat to talk with one of my biggest inspirations. please enjoy my conversation with the great MR. JACOB CAMPBELL   Cheers!

From Rod Hamdallah: Honored to have sat down and talked about one of my favorite albums on Three on the Ones and Twos. My choice is Captain Beefheart and his Magic Band's 1967 release, “Safe as Milk”. This album struck me the first time I heard it and influenced my music quite a bit. I love how Bluesy/Psychedelic and obscure the songs are, while Beefheart's “Howlin' Wolf-style” singing layers it perfectly. This album is still one of my top favorites and always will be.

During his 18-year career as a musician, Don Van Vliet, better known by the moniker of Captain Beefheart, never experienced major levels of commercial success. Despite the cult following that he commanded, and an eventual long and storied legacy of innovation and influence upon future art and progressive rock acts, he and his famed Magic Band backing group were always struggling to get by financially. Their records were critical marvels, but were slim on sales. As the 70s progressed, Beefheart made multiple attempts to allay this lack of commercial success by gradually tempering his signature sound back. This meant less abrasive, frenzied, and surreal arrangements and lyrics, and more relaxed tempos, standard rhythms and simple love songs. These attempts would not bring Beefheart the mainstream clout he desired, but would turn off his cult following, and alienate the Magic Band themselves. In 1974, a particular nadir was reached with the release of the record Unconditionally Guaranteed, which traded the experimentation of beloved albums like Trout Mask Replica and Safe As Milk for generic, un-challenging, over-simplified 70s blues rock. Critics shunned it, fans detested it, and the Magic Band would quit shortly after the album's release in a huff. Even Beefheart himself would disavow the record, encouraging fans to get a refund if they bought it.Will we feel the same way? That's what we aim to find out on a new Jukebox Zeroes, in which Lilz and Patrick welcome return guest Tim Howd of The Only Humans. Join them as they go track-by-track, trying to find the signature weirdness and scrappy charm missing from Unconditionally Guaranteed.Local Music Feature: Fiddlehead - Heart to Heart
