POPULARITY
This month we've gone back further than ever before to 1967 a time when none of us existed yet and everything was psychedelic and groovy. There's proto prog, primeval punk, pop masterpieces, and whatever you'd categorise Zabadak as...We've each chosen our 10 favourite songs of the year and sent them over to Colin's wife Helen, who put the playlists together and distributed them so we were each given a playlist of the 20 songs from the other two hosts, along with our own 10. We then ranked the playlists in order of preference and sent them back to Helen, who totalled up the points and worked out the order. She also joined us on the episode to read out the countdown, which we found out as we recorded so all reactions are genuine. Now, admittedly, in parts we're a little bit brutal to some of the songs in the list as we're three separate people with differing music tastes, but please remember that to be in this episode at all the songs have to have been in one of our top 10's of that year.Bands featured in this episode include (In alphabetical order, no spoilers here!) - The Beach Boys, The Beatles, Tim Buckley, Calico Wall, Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band, Country Joe & The Fish, Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick & Tich, The Electric Prunes, Aretha Franklin, Jimi Hendrix, The Hollies, Jefferson Airplane, The LEft Banke, Love, The Lovin' Spoonful, Pink Floyd, Louis Prima & Phil Harris, Otis Redding & Carla Thomas, Kenny Rogers & The First Edition, Sam & Dave, The Seeds, Nina Simone, Stone Poneys, The Third Bardo, Vanilla Fudge, The Velvet Underground, Scott Walker, The Who, The West Coast Pop Art Experimental BandFind all songs in alphabetical order here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5AZHbpp2zaOQoCQwI2QjDN?si=9838e165b6d94229Find our We Dig Music Pollwinners Party playlist (featuring all of the winning songs up until now) here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/45zfDHo8zm6VqrvoEQSt3z?si=Ivt0oMj6SmitimvumYfFrQIf you want to listen to megalength playlists of all the songs we've individually picked since we started doing best of the year episodes (which need updating but I plan on doing them over the next few months or so), you can listen to Colin's here – https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5x3Vy5Jry2IxG9JNOtabRT?si=HhcVKRCtRhWCK1KucyrDdgIan's here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2H0hnxe6WX50QNQdlfRH5T?si=XmEjnRqISNqDwi30p1uLqAand Tracey's here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2p3K0n8dKhjHb2nKBSYnKi?si=7a-cyDvSSuugdV1m5md9NwThe playlist of 20 songs from the other two hosts was scored as usual, our favourite song got 20 points, counting down incrementally to our least favourite which got 1 point. The scoring of our own list of 10 is now slightly more complicated in order to give a truer level of points to our own favourites. So rather than them only being able to score as many points as our 10th favourite in the other list, the points in our own list were distributed as follows -1st place - 20 points2nd place - 18 points3rd place – 16 points4th place – 14 points5th place – 12 points6th place – 9 points7th place – 7 points8th place – 5 points9th place – 3 points10th place -1 pointHosts - Ian Clarke, Colin Jackson-Brown & Tracey BGuest starring Helen Jackson-Brown.Playlist compiling/distributing – Helen Jackson-BrownRecorded/Edited/Mixed/Original Music by Colin Jackson-Brown for We Dig PodcastsThanks to Peter Latimer for help with the scoring system.Part of the We Dig Podcasts network along with Free With This Months Issue & Pick A Disc.Bluesky - https://bsky.app/profile/wedigmusic.bsky.socialInstagram - https://www.instagram.com/wedigmusicpcast/Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/wedigpusicpcast/Find our other episodes & podcasts at www.wedigpodcasts.com
"Safe as Milk" is the debut album by Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band, released in 1967. The record is a wild blend of blues, psychedelic rock, and experimental music, showcasing the unique and often eccentric vision of frontman Don Van Vliet (aka Captain Beefheart). While rooted in traditional electric blues, Safe as Milk already hints at the avant-garde style that would define Beefheart's later work. The album features intricate guitar work, odd rhythms, and surreal, poetic lyrics. It's more accessible than Beefheart's later records like Trout Mask Replica, but still packed with creative risks and strange beauty. The album features a young Ry Cooder on guitar, whose contributions helped shape the sound and keep it grounded, even as Beefheart pushed boundaries.Though it wasn't a commercial hit at the time, Safe as Milk has since become a cult classic and an essential record for fans of psychedelic and experimental rock. It marks the beginning of one of the most iconoclastic careers in 20th-century music.Listen to the album on Apple Music Listen to the album on SpotifyWhat did you think of this album? Send us a text! Interview with Mark Bingham Guitarist-singer-songwriter-arranger and esteemed producer Mark Bingham (a 2021 recipient of Offbeat magazine's Lifetime Achievement in Music Business Award), has dedicated over 50 years to pursuing creativity regardless of category. From working with seminal punk and No Wave bands MX-80 Sound and Bush Tetras to Cajun groups Michot's Melody Makers and Lost Bayou Ramblers to Beat poets Ed Sanders and Allen Ginsberg to jazz artists John Scofield, Wycliffe Gordon and Nicholas Payton to celebrated pop stars like Marianne Faithfull, Dr. John, R.E.M., Roy Orbison and Jon Batiste, Bingham has always sought out projects that get his creative juices flowing. “There's been no linear path,” he said of his storied career. “It's been up and down and all around, and you just try to find good people to work with.” A true child of the ‘60s, Bingham is from an era when ‘Question Authority' was de rigueur. He ended up taking it to heart, both politically and musically. While attending Indiana University in the early ‘70s, at the peak of the anti-war movement on the campuses all across America, the Bloomington, Indiana native formed the Screaming Gypsy Bandits, a sprawling 10-piece theatrical psych rock group with an absurdist/prankster bent that shared the renegade stance of such bands of the day as Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention, Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band and the Hampton Grease Band (led by visionary frontman Col. Bruce Hampton). Mark's Info https://markbingham.bandcamp.com/music

Lewis Allan Reed (March 2, 1942 - October 27, 2013) was an American musician, singer, songwriter, and poet. He was the guitarist, singer, and principal songwriter for the rock band the Velvet Underground and had a solo career that spanned five decades. Although not commercially successful during its existence, the Velvet Underground became regarded as one of the most influential bands in the history of underground and alternative rock music. Reed's distinctive deadpan voice, poetic and transgressive lyrics, and experimental guitar playing were trademarks throughout his long career. In this episode a compilation of Reed's final two playlists curated by himself (for a popular online music streaming platform that shall remain unnamed), before he passed in 2013, revealing what he was listening to in his final days. Lineup: Nicki Minaj, Albert Ayler, Roy Orbison, Prince, Fucked Up, The King Khan & BBQ Show, Waylon Jennings, Georgia Anne Muldrow, Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band, of Montreal, Ricky Nelson, Tom Waits, Miles Davis, Deerhoof, Antony and the Johnsons, Howlin' Wolf, Lonnie Johnson, Otis Redding, Emily Haines & The Soft Skeleton, Perfume Genius, Ty Segall, Leonard Cohen, Dr. Dog, Napalm Death, Eddy Current Suppression Ring, Daughter, Robyn
An unprecedented fourth podcast appearance for our main guy and band mate Joe Willis this week, and what a couple of albums we have him on for! We threw the question out to all the good people of Instagram asking for the match-up they want to hear, and we chose Lewis Armstrong's absolute dud (maybe genius) match up between Corey Feldman 'Angelic 2 The Core' and Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band 'Trout Mask Replica'. What a week of listening. We implore you to go listen to these two, it's stunning. Frank Vincent Zappa (December 21, 1940 – December 4, 1993) was an American musician, singer, composer, songwriter and bandleader. His work is characterized by nonconformity, free-form improvisation, sound experiments, musical virtuosity and satire of American culture. In a career spanning more than 30 years, Zappa composed rock, pop, jazz, jazz fusion, orchestral and musique concrète works, and produced almost all of the 60-plus albums that he released with his band the Mothers of Invention and as a solo artist. Zappa also directed feature-length films and music videos, and designed album covers. He is considered one of the most innovative and stylistically diverse musicians of his generation. On a number of occasions Zappa appeared in radio show slots, airing and generally discussing his favored music, or occasionally guesting on a 'club turntable', describing himself as a 'Fraudulent DJ'. In this episode, part two of a series of two, all the tracks in chronological order as selected by Zappa (with exception of most of his own tracks) for all his DJ appearances that have been documented, and that took place between 1968 and 1984. Dean Smith's musical career took some interesting twists and turns. One of the most interesting began when he was asked to join Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band's US and European tour when Beefheart's band quit two weeks before the first tour date.

Polly Jean Harvey (born 9 October 1969) is an English singer, songwriter and musician. Primarily known as a vocalist and guitarist, she is also proficient with a wide range of instruments. Over the course of her career, Harvey established herself as one of the most individual and influential songwriters of her era, exploring themes of sex, religion, and political issues with unnerving honesty, dark humor, and a twisted theatricality. This episode is a compilation of the four playlists published by Harvey between August 2019 and August 2021. Lineup: Claude Debussy, Martin Jones, Colin Stetson, Amen Dunes, Empire of the Sun, Ólafur Arnalds, Nils Frahm, Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band, Connan Mockasin, Thom Yorke, Coby Sey, Bendik Giske, Tirzah, Sarah Neufeld, Big Thief, Hekla, Sibylle Baier, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Desert Sessions, Liela Moss, slowthai, Mura Masa, Eartheater, Hole, Radiohead, Nicholas Britell, Hanan Townshend, Here We Go Magic, Mark Lanegan, Bob Dylan, Anne Briggs, Stina Nordenstam, Jed Kurzel, SAULT, Michael Kiwanuka, Martin Phipps, Johnny Flynn, Robert Macfarlane, Low, Sleaford Mods, Superstate, Graham Coxon, Valentina Pappalardo, Shabazz Palaces
Thurston Joseph Moore (born July 25, 1958) is an American musician best known as a member of Sonic Youth. He has also participated in many solo and group collaborations outside Sonic Youth, as well as running the Ecstatic Peace! record label. Thurston Moore's work with Sonic Youth rearranged the parameters of indie rock to an almost incalculable degree, merging experimental art rock tendencies with unconventional guitar tunings for a sound that would influence generations to come. Moore's abstract poetic lyrics and perpetually mysterious aura were core ingredients of Sonic Youth's 30-plus-year run, but also bled into countless side projects and less-frequent solo albums like 1994's sprawling and loose Psychic Hearts. After the group's breakup in 2011, Moore continued with his ambitions, ranging from projects like his band Chelsea Light Moving to noisy collaborations with Merzbow and John Zorn to solo albums like 2020's By the Fire that continued exploring the kind of moody, twisting art rock he'd become an icon of with Sonic Youth. Moore was ranked 34th in Rolling Stone's 2004 edition of the '100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time.' In May 2012, Spin published a staff-selected list of the top 100 rock guitarists, and ranked Moore and his Sonic Youth bandmate Lee Ranaldo together at number 1. Lineup: Tapper Zukie, Patti Smith, Teenage Jesus & The Jerks, MARS, Public Image Ltd., The Slits, The Raincoats, Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band, Alice Cooper, T. With the news that “Trout Mask Replica” by Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band had finally arrived to streaming services, Greg decided it was time to take the dive. We'll cover that next week, but this week we dip our toes in the wildly creative and experimental masterpiece released in 1969 & produced by Frank Zappa. It's a superbly challenging listen the first few times, but so many interesting and respected artists and creators swear its a masterpiece. Songs:Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band - “Frownland”Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band - “Veteran's Day Poppy”Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band - “Dali's Car”Jay is pumped to bring us a long awaited second round of “8 Bit” & he's even got a theme!! This week we dive into a 2009 Kickstarter project called “Kind of Bloop” (kindofbloop.com), a track-by-track homage to Miles Davis' “Kind of Blue” orchestrated for the NES sound emulator. It's…well, you'll hear…it's a cool idea & we have nothing but respect for the artists that worked through that process out of respect for the original material. However, this isn't even the main story. It seems that the organizer, while managing to go through the proper channels and secure the rights to the music, neglected to run the pixel art version of the album's cover by the Photographer. A few years later & it's been settled out of court, with the project's creator paying the photographer $32,500 & agreeing to cease using the pixel art cover… there's a lot to discuss.Song: Joe Cocker - “You Can Leave Your Hat On”Last up, Nick brings us the news that Live Nation will be requiring all artists, staff & attendees be vaccinated or show proof of a negative Covid-19 test from within 72 hours of the show. While some consider it a controversial position for a company to take, we all agreed that this was entirely good news!Song: Pinegrove - “Darkness”
In September of 1967, an eccentric young musician named Don Van Vliet released his debut album under his stage moniker, Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band. That album was called Safe As Milk. Van Vliet was quite a character. He was a singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and visual artist. His music blended elements of blues, free jazz, rock, and avant-garde composition with idiosyncratic rhythms, absurdist wordplay, and his wide vocal range. Known for his enigmatic persona, Beefheart frequently constructed myths about his life and was known to exercise an almost dictatorial control over his supporting musicians. Although he achieved little commercial success, he sustained a cult following as a "highly significant" and "incalculable" influence on an array of new wave, punk, and experimental rock artists. The Residents, Tom Waits, Sonic Youth and many others site him as an influence. Safe As Milk is the first album from Beefheart, and although more approachable than some of his later work, is definitely unusual. A&M Records decided to drop the band after hearing the demos. If you're interested in Beefheart, this is a good place to start. So sit back, relax, and join us as we listen to Safe As Milk. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/esoterica-the-podcast/message

At last a major victory has been achieved! As the victor, Broomy challenged Mystic to listen to the incredibly abrasive and influential album "Trout Mask Replica" by Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band. And Mystic didn't just listen, he dives deep! Fun ep!

This one's a continuation of last week's show... might as well be the second hour of a two-hour multi-SubGenius-Show collision involving Hour of Slack, Puzzling Evidence (albeit with Dr. Hal and Dr. WDrummond but no Puzzling), Time for the Show, SubGenius Uberwomen of Austin and Cool Hand Chris collages, Lemur cut-ups, and the requisite Rudt Schwartz Project brand new masterpiece. And, a Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band classic! This episode's also strangely more laid-back, real-life and personal than usual. But don't worry, that won't continue.
