He has published in a variety of academic and popular journals, including Compact, First Things, Perspectives on Political Science, and The Claremont Review of Books. His book project, Actually Existing Postliberalism, examines the transformation of the West since 1989. It is under contract with Basic Books. Amy Wax, professor of law at the University of Pennsylvania, talks to Timon about her cancellation, the state of academia, and western civilization.    Amy Wax is a tenured professor at the University of Pennsylvania Law School, where she has taught since 2001, holding the Robert Mundheim Professor of Law chair since 2007. A native of Troy, New York, she earned a B.S. summa cum laude in molecular biophysics and biochemistry from Yale in 1975, a Marshall Scholarship to Oxford, and an M.D. from Harvard Medical School in 1981, where she trained as a neurologist. She completed her J.D. from Columbia Law School in 1987, serving as an editor of the Columbia Law Review. Wax clerked for Judge Abner J. Mikva and argued 15 cases before the U.S. Supreme Court while working in the Office of the Solicitor General. She taught at the University of Virginia School of Law from 1994 to 2001. Her academic work focuses on social welfare law, family policy, and labor markets. Alcibiades leads his troops past Timon's hideout in the wilderness, prompting a barrage of insults and mockery from the malcontent. But when Timon learns Alcibiades is planning to take over Athens, he gives him gold to support the campaign. Alcibiades is followed by the Poet and Painter, who Timon turns away with another barrage of insults. When thieves come to rob him, Timon cheers them on, baffling their efforts and sending them to the city to sow chaos in the streets. The Senators are the last to arrive. Flavia heads them off in an effort to win Timon over to their side before they meet. Hunter Baker, provost and professor at North Greenville University, joins Timon and Josh to talk about his new book, Postliberal Protestants: Baptists Between Obergefell and Christian Nationalism.    Hunter Baker, J.D., Ph.D. serves as provost and dean of the faculty of North Greenville University. He is the author of three books (The End of Secularism, Political Thought: A Student's Guide, and The System Has a Soul), has contributed chapters and forewords to 21 others, and has published over 40 articles and essays. His work has been translated into Italian, Polish, and in the near future, Chinese. He is the winner of the 2011 Michael Novak Award conferred by the Acton Institute and has lectured widely on matters of religion and liberty. In addition to his work at North Greenville, Baker also serves as a contributing editor for Touchstone: A Journal of Mere Christianity and as an associate editor of the Journal of Markets and Morality. He is a fellow of the Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission, the Center for Religion, Culture, and Democracy, and the Land Center for Cultural Engagement. Timon leaves Athens with his curses, strips himself bare and goes into the wilderness. As hunger sets in, he digs for a root to eat and discovers a pile of gold hidden underground. Apemantus finds Timon lamenting his fate and scolds him for being an undeserving misanthrope, telling him to come back to Athens. Timon refuses, setting off an argument between them. Apemantus finally leaves Timon and returns to Athens, where the citizens are growing increasingly unruly over the high taxes and prices they're paying as Alcibiades launches his offensive against the city. When Apemantus announces that he's found Timon with a trove of coins, the Artist, the Painter and the Senators head for the hills to get some of Timon's gold. Joshua Mitchell, professor at Georgetown University, joins Timon and Josh for a wide ranging discussion about America, identity politics, and Protestantism.    Joshua Mitchell, PhD. is currently professor of political theory at Georgetown University. He has been Chairman of the Government Department and also Associate Dean of Faculty Affairs at SFS-Q. During the 2008-10 academic years, Dr. Mitchell was took Leave from Georgetown, and was the Acting Chancellor of The American University of Iraq - Sulaimani. His research interest lies in the relationship between political thought and theology in the West. He has published articles in The Review of Politics, The Journal of Politics, The Journal of Religion, APSR, and Political Theory. In 1993 his book, NOT BY REASON ALONE: RELIGION, HISTORY, AND IDENTITY IN EARLY MODERN THOUGHT, was published by the University of Chicago Press. A second book, THE FRAGILITY OF FREEDOM: TOCQUEVILLE ON RELIGION, DEMOCRACY, AND THE AMERICAN FUTURE, was published in 1995, also by the University of Chicago Press. In 2006, PLATO'S FABLE: ON THE MORTAL CONDITION IN SHADOWY TIMES, was published by Princeton University Press. His most recent book, TOCQUEVILLE IN ARABIA: DILEMMAS IN A DEMOCRATIC AGE, was published by the University of Chicago Press in 2013. More recently, he finished a book entitled, AMERICAN AWAKENING: IDENTITY POLITICS AND OTHER AFFLICTIONS OF OUR TIME, to be published shortly by Encounter Books (2020). These seven were presented to the apostles, who prayed for them as they laid their hands on them. So God's message continued to spread. The number of believers greatly increased in Jerusalem, and many of the Jewish priests were converted, too. Acts 6:5-7 NLT#1 Pain and Persecution become Passion and Compassion when given to God.Acts 6:8-11 ESV The choice to disregard the obvious leads to deception and destruction. Acts 7:51-60 NLTPain and persecution fuel Godly passion and compassion when our lives and journeys are surrendered to Him.Acts 8:4-6 NLT#2 Godly purity is key to accessing Godly power A man named Simon had previously practiced sorcery in that city and amazed the Samaritan people, while claiming to be somebody great. They all paid attention to him, from the least of them to the greatest, and they said, “This man is called the Great Power of God.” They were attentive to him because he had amazed them with his sorceries for a long time. But when they believed Philip, as he proclaimed the good news about the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, both men and women were baptized. Even Simon himself believed. And after he was baptized. Acts 8:9-13 NLTThis worlds superficial provisions pale in comparison to the supernatural power found in the purposes and plans of God.When Simon saw that the Spirit was given when the apostles laid their hands on people, he offered them money to buy this power. “Let me have this power, too,” he exclaimed, “so that when I lay my hands on people, they will receive the Holy Spirit!” But Peter replied, “May your money be destroyed with you for thinking God's gift can be bought! You can have no part in this, for your heart is not right with God. Repent of your wickedness and pray to the Lord. Perhaps he will forgive your evil thoughts, for I can see that you are full of bitter jealousy and are held captive by sin.” “Pray to the Lord for me,” Simon exclaimed, “that these terrible things you've said won't happen to me!” Acts 8:18-24 NLTThe pure in heart have access to a power the prideful will never see, no matter how great their gifts or glory. As for Philip, an angel of the Lord said to him, “Go south down the desert road that runs from Jerusalem to Gaza.” Acts 8:26 NLT#3 The Prophetic empowers ImpactSo he started out, and he met the treasurer of Ethiopia, a eunuch of great authority under Candace, the queen of Ethiopia. The eunuch had gone to Jerusalem to worship, and he was now returning. Seated in his carriage, he was reading aloud from the book of the prophet Isaiah. - The Holy Spirit said to Philip, “Go over and walk along beside the carriage.” Philip ran over and heard the man reading from the prophet Isaiah. Philip asked, “Do you understand what you are reading?” The man replied, “How can I, unless someone instructs me?” And he urged Philip to come up into the carriage and sit with him. The passage of Scripture he had been reading was this: “He was led like a sheep to the slaughter. And as a lamb is silent before the shearers, he did not open his mouth. He was humiliated and received no justice. Who can speak of his descendants? For his life was taken from the earth.” The eunuch asked Philip, “Tell me, was the prophet talking about himself or someone else?” Acts 8:27-34 NLT Prophetic impact requires eyes that are open and a heart that is His.So beginning with this same Scripture, Philip told him the Good News about Jesus. As they rode along, they came to some water, and the eunuch said, “Look! There's some water! Why can't I be baptized?” He ordered the carriage to stop, and they went down into the water, and Philip baptized him. When they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord snatched Philip away. The eunuch never saw him again but went on his way rejoicing. Meanwhile, Philip found himself farther north at the town of Azotus. He preached the Good News there and in every town along the way until he came to Caesarea. Everyone who's anyone in Athens shows up to Timon's banquet, reveling in the excesses of his generosity and vying for favor in his esteem. The only unwelcome guest is Apemantus, a blunt and cynical philosopher who sees through all the false flattery and pretense of the crowd. Acts 6 In those days when the number of disciples was increasing, the Hellenistic Jews among them complained against the Hebraic Jews because their widows were being overlooked in the daily distribution of food.  When growth brings pressure, don't lose sight of God's priorities. 2 So the Twelve gathered all the disciples together and said, “It would not be right for us to neglect the ministry of the word of God in order to wait on tables.    3 Brothers and sisters, choose seven men from among you who are known to be full of the Spirit and wisdom. We will turn this responsibility over to them 4 and will give our attention to prayer and the ministry of the word.”   5 This proposal pleased the whole group. They chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit; also Philip, Procorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicolas from Antioch, a convert to Judaism.    6 They presented these men to the apostles, who prayed and laid their hands on them.   7 So the word of God spread. The number of disciples in Jerusalem increased rapidly, and a large number of priests became obedient to the faith. 8 Now Stephen, a man full of God's grace and power, performed great wonders and signs among the people.    9 Opposition arose, however, from members of the Synagogue of the Freedmen (as it was called)—Jews of Cyrene and Alexandria as well as the provinces of Cilicia and Asia—who began to argue with Stephen.  When resistance brings pressure, don't shrink back from God's purpose. 10 But they could not stand up against the wisdom the Spirit gave him as he spoke.   11 Then they secretly persuaded some men to say, “We have heard Stephen speak blasphemous words against Moses and against God.”   12 So they stirred up the people and the elders and the teachers of the law. They seized Stephen and brought him before the Sanhedrin.    13 They produced false witnesses, who testified, “This fellow never stops speaking against this holy place and against the law.    14 For we have heard him say that this Jesus of Nazareth will destroy this place and change the customs Moses handed down to us.”   15 All who were sitting in the Sanhedrin looked intently at Stephen, and they saw that his face was like the face of an angel. Acts 7:48-60 48 “However, the Most High does not live in houses made by human hands.    As the prophet says: 49 “‘Heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool. What kind of house will you build for me? says the Lord. Or where will my resting place be? 50 Has not my hand made all these things?'   51 “You stiff-necked people! Your hearts and ears are still uncircumcised. You are just like your ancestors: You always resist the Holy Spirit!    52 Was there ever a prophet your ancestors did not persecute? They even killed those who predicted the coming of the Righteous One. And now you have betrayed and murdered him— 53 you who have received the law that was given through angels but have not obeyed it.” 54 When the members of the Sanhedrin heard this, they were furious and gnashed their teeth at him.    55 But Stephen, full of the Holy Spirit, looked up to heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God.    56 “Look,” he said, “I see heaven open and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God.”   57 At this they covered their ears and, yelling at the top of their voices, they all rushed at him, 58 dragged him out of the city and began to stone him.    Meanwhile, the witnesses laid their coats at the feet of a young man named Saul. 59 While they were stoning him, Stephen prayed, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.”    60 Then he fell on his knees and cried out, “Lord, do not hold this sin against them.” When he had said this, he fell asleep. When death brings pressure, don't forget God's promise.   Romans 14:8 If we live, we live for the Lord; and if we die, we die for the Lord. So, whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord.   Don't let the pressure push you down, let it push you deeper.
