Gap in Expertise is a weekly podcast centering around a group of friends trading ideas in civil conversation, revisiting topics with viewer feedback, and seeing whether or not there is any hope for minds to change given proper evidence to - bridge the gap ;) - of our own expertise
Second part of the last part. Happy New Year!
Clearly GIE is on indefinite hiatus. Turns out people have jobs and families and can't always get online for two hours to argue about which LOTR film is best or whether Trump should be impeached. What we still have some time for is our continued DnD saga.Quick update, our heroes are trapped in a down called Riverview and the King has sent his best soldier, The First Sword, to deal with the town. Riverview is locked down with all exits barred by soldiers, we pick up with The Legion of the Lost as they try to find their way out. Also, there were a lot of internet issues and one member in the game did not record their segment, so apologies for the occasional dead air. If it helps, just imagine someone talking about their skin flute and turning into more raspberry bushes. I am, however, going to be relaunching the DnD episodes on a separate podcast in the future and will spend the next few months finding a new voice for Gap in Expertise.
As you can all probably tell, there's been a lack in content. I am working re-launching the podcast in the near future with something a bit more sustainable. We have one more "regular" podcast to release and until then, we still have a couple new episodes to the DnD saga. I'm primarily releasing them here at this point so we can remember what happened before we play again. If you've been enjoying them and following along, we will release what we have left here and will look to make a channel dedicated to our DnD. Or not, who knows, the world is a crazy place and I live next to a volcano sitting on a subduction plate ready to go. Anyways, this episode is all about arguing, realizing that Tahr'eah hasn't been paying attention at all to the plot, and trying to lure out a single Orc with an illusion of a moist, but sickly dear.
Hello and welcome back to Part 5! It is the first installment of our second live recording session, so you would expect we got our act together by now. Sadly no, but at least the sound quality is better! We join our four heroes shortly after their recovery at the farmhouse, where a new foe approaches and raspberries still somehow make their way on the battlefield...
Welcome back to Gap in Expertise and our first journey through Dungeons and Dragons! This episode takes place after the battle on the farmstead and is a bit of a prologue to the second part in our journey. We last left Kvelduf, Tahr'eah, Camlous, and North after a devastating battle with Captain Beltran against a horde of orcs. Like the ninja turtles regrouping in the country after Raphael was captured, our heroes need to recover, and rediscover who they are and why they chose to fight. New episodes of our journey will be released soon!
Hello and welcome to our Game of Thrones Deadpool Edition! Like many of you we are on the edge of our seats awaiting the first episode of the final season of Game of Thrones. And also like many of you, we have our own theories of who will end up sitting on the Iron Throne. So to celebrate that, we bullshitted about it for an hour. Who WILL sit on the Iron Throne? Who SHOULD sit on the Iron Throne? Who will prevail in Cleganebowl 2019? Will Brienne of Tarth take the eager and willing Tormund to bed? And many other questions will be debated. At the 53:40 mark we also go through a speed round of all remaining characters and give our opinions on whether they will live, die, or perhaps become something else. Thanks for listening and be sure to share with your friends! If you would like to join our Deadpool, message us on our social media as well! We're back again from an unscheduled break. Getting right to it, this week is about guns and the issues surrounding gun ownership in America. This week it's Egil, Cory, Keith, and newcomer Peter (not to be confused with Pete). Thanks for tuning in and please share this podcast with everyone you know! And if you don't like this podcast, share it with people you hate! Cheers! 7:08 - Keith has a lot of guns. The Aussie solution/bans. 16:30 - Responsible ownership problem? Gun registrations. 29:03 - A culture problem? 40:45 - Can registry or responsibility prevent gun violence? 56:39 - Egil fails at reading Wikipedia for 5 minutes. 104:14 - Judicial, social media, mental health, and evolution rabbit holes. 1:25:00 - Almost cancelling the podcast, wrap up, and vintage John Oliver.
Hello and welcome back to episode four, and the last of our first live session, of dungeons and dragons, here, on Gap in Expertise. We last left our heroes, Kvelduf, Tahr'eah, Camlous, and North, along with the dashing Captain Beltran, about to face off with a gaggle of orcs, closing in on the farmhouse. Although they are well rested from the previous battle, it did reveal some, gaps, in their fighting and teamwork. But perhaps with the valiant Beltran, our heroes will make waste of the orc scourge and resume their quest to Felshire. Or maybe we'll just get more raspberry bushes. Also stay tuned for the end for North's recap of our quest so far!
This weeks episode is all about fashion! Specifically the equity, or lack thereof, in the codifying and enforcement of formal wear in the workplace. Make it work! We get bogged down in a few case studies but as workplaces become more diverse and HR departments continue to bloat, you have to start the conversation somewhere. Is there a Netflix 5 second eye contact rule for clothes? Probably not, we sure as hell didn't find it. This week it's Kyle (sort of), Mike, Billy, and Egil! Thanks for listening! 3:12: The "perceived rules" of professional dress - two limited case studies. 8:29 - A shot of formal wear history. 14:02 - Kyle's corporate case study on male formal wear before his internet shat the bed. 18:08 - Unclear standards or unclear enforcement? 23:47 - What really is formal wear? 35:05 - Can we determine objective rules for workplace fashion? 46: 25 - We find solutions for Mike... and more misogyny clarification/apologetics! 52:28 - A polite request for feedback and other appropriate perspectives. If you think we got something wrong or missed something, let us know and sound off on our social media pages or email! Hello and welcome to our first "Bridging the Gap" episode! Along with our goal of podcasting "snapshots in civil conversation", we had another goal to get listeners of the podcast to contact us via the internets and participate in podcasts, revisiting topics they, the listener, thought we could do with some "bridging"...of our expertise. The goal of this was to hopefully show that given new evidence/perspectives/et ceteras, we on GIE would be able to demonstrate ego-less, flexibility in our own ideals. This week we have our first BTG with a frequent contributor (still counts) Jess. We revisited, and refocused, the conversation on abortion. Towards the end we also discussed my anxiety for adopting two cats in a small studio apartment. This is a first episode, an experiment, and hopefully with your participation we will get better at whatever this is. Tell your friends!!! Did we get something wrong? What are we missing? In Part 3 of this harrowing tail, we rejoin our heroes after they valiantly fought off a vicious, murderous pack of Wargs. While tending to their wounds, the survey the gruesome battle scene and further investigate the two abandoned wagons. With little ground covered since they left the in, they are no closer to uncovering the mysteries of the farmers errand. What surprises lay in wait for our fellowship? Will Kvelduf continue tolerating Camlous and his racists taunts? Will Tahr'eah get to flip back into the wagon? And will North finally upgrade his bedroll? All this and more on this weeks GIE!!!
By no demand whatsoever, GIE presents what probably no one was asking for: an in depth conversation about Roe V. Wade, Consciousness, personal responsibility, and religion as it applies to our country's current debate on abortion - without any female representation. What we're saying is, please spread the word on this podcast so we can not do this ever again. It was a pretty good debate though. Tell us what you think. 1:46 - Roe v. Wade v. Trump's Supreme Court. Abortion in the eyes of the law. 13:24 - When does life begin, Plan B, and personal responsibility. 23:47 - Kyle finally speaks! Also, fetus rights and more personal responsibility! 35:06 - The real reason we are talking about abortion today. 40:02 - Consciousness and policy 1:02:57 - Religion and policy. 1:09:52 - Wrap up, podcast update, Naruto, and send off. After a long holiday break, GIE is back with a podcast about war movies and television. We talk about the common (and sometimes overused) tropes in war films, the historical accuracy (and inaccuracy) of some films, but for some reason we couldn't stop debating about Tom Hanks. Oh well. With two history scholars and one film major, there's no way in hell we can get anything wrong on this one right? Well if we do, please let us know on our Facebook and Instagram page so we can start gapping - :) - our expertise. 4:50 - Tangent #1: Casting issues with Ben Affleck, Tom Hanks, and Ewan McGregor 13:15 - And Peter Dinklage in Destiny 14:55 - WWII Flicks 25:07 - Black Hawk Down 38:54 - Tropes Through Generations 55:07 - American Revolution Films (or lack thereof) 1:11:22 - Guilty Pleasures and Wrap Up Did we get something wrong? You'd be the baddest leader around, 'round, 'roundAnd they'd notice, they'd noticeYou would shut it... On the verge of a government shutdown over immigration reform, border control, and the big, beautiful wall, Gap in Expertise finally gets back to some debate following the hilarious/disastrous/sad meeting between Trump, Pelosi, and Schumer. In this episode Dave and Egil discuss the state of Trumps presidency currently, the legitimacy of the wall, and Trump's love of murderous tyrannical world leaders. As always... Last we left our intrepid heroes, they were heading west towards Felshire when they came across a grisly scene. While Camlous, Kveldulf, North, and Tahr'eah investigated the corpse ridden scene in the fading light, three monstrous Wargs emerged from the shadows. We begin this episode where we left off, as they meet the enemy head on...
This week, Cale and Egil talk about their favorite places to travel in the US and abroad, all while being distracted and playing Red Dead Redemption 2 the entire time! ...scheduling has been an issue but we are redoubling efforts and hard hitting, controversial, meaty debates will be back soon. This week, Gap in Expertise plays Dungeons and Dragons! I know right?! It's about time. This is a long one so we've divided them into 4 parts. Below is the intro to our journey through Ossetia. Enjoy! 4:32: Intro to Ossetia (yes I pronounced it wrong in the intro) 8:32: Cresthaven Tavern 20:11: An Offer For Adventure 34:20: To Falshire! 53:50: Circling the Wagon Welcome to Ossetia. This continent is divided both my dangerous terrain and political powers. The Arathi foothills bisect the continent in the south while the Kel’nia marsh lands divide it to the north. To the east lay the blasted lands of the infernal expanse overrun with all manner of beasts and terrors; to the northeast lies the unclaimed wilds of the Valenwood Forest. A haven for those who choose to live a more uncivilized lifestyle. Our story however begins in western Ossetia. It is the year 828 PC post calamity. This year marks the centennial of the final battle of the War of shadow. 100 long years ago War raged in the lands of the west. A great host of orc, gnoll and demon spawn flooded forth from the infernal expanse, covering the lands of the west in a sea of carnage and destruction. Under the direction of the great elven warrior Aldrith Othgard, the 5 nation states of the west forged an alliance to combat the unstoppable host. This was known as the Othgard accord Lead by Othgard and his Legion of the Sun, the 5 nations turned the tide of the war and eventually pushed the evil host eastward back through the Jordash passes and finally crushing them in one final blow on the plains of the infernal expanse itself. Ending the war and ensuring all that was good and holy remained in the west Following the end of the war, again at the direction of Othgard, a counsel of mages and wizards was formed. Elected by the citizenry of the nations this group of learned men became known as the Counsel of the Moon. Their first act ; to create the great floating city state of Skyhold the crown jewel of Western Ossetia Under the Accord the nations are generally left to their own devices. All are encouraged to live and govern as they did before the war. The Legion and Counsel take only a small tithe of what you produce and earn. In exchange, the counsel acts as mediators or judges, settling land disputes and trade agreements, as well as sentencing those who break the laws. The legion acts as the peacekeepers; Enforcing the laws, patrolling the borders and ensuring the roads are safe for travel and open trade. The Accord has lead to a time of relative freedom and prosperity over the last century. However, tensions now brew between the nations. Old rivalries and past bigotries forgotten during the war have taken root once again. Rumors of military clashes at the borders of Ill’irion and Gervior as well as caravan raids as far west as Ju’Desh have many folk on edge. Some say the Accord hangs by a thread and that civil war is inevitable. Our story however begins much smaller. Here in the central nation of Allendor beyond the entrance to the Gulgarg valley lies the village of Cresthaven. Nestled on the banks of a small branch of the Dellwine River, this small fishing village has enjoyed relative peace and freedom from the politics of Skyhold. To its east and south acres of rolling hills of farmland. To the North the spattering of trees and ferns marking the beginning of the Birchbloom forest. The moonrise road cuts the village in half, leading westward towards Morrowdale, Falshire and eventually Skyhold itself. It is late afternoon and the sun sits in the sky to the west . Fishermen and farmers bustle about the small market in the center of the village gathering their unsold wares and heading to their homes mostly dotted around the outskirts of Cresthaven. From the east you see two figures appear on the horizon. One towering over the other. They slowly stroll through town towards the largest building in the market square. Above the sturdy door of the building a small sign lazily swings in the wind. It’s a picture of a young man asleep on a riverbank, a fishing pole thrown haphazardly next to him. As the figures approach the wooden door of the establishment the sound of laugher and music can be heard from within.
We're back! First off a quick apology for the delay. I had a new work opportunity on the opposite coast and 2 weeks to get there, so my priorities shifted temporarily. But now that I have a bed and the internets, we are back! This totally original idea for a podcast, in no way stolen or diluted from any other, is all about challenging ourselves to a month of cessation from the Devil's Drink. We also include some dietary changes during the month, all for the goal of improving our health and testing our will. The first half of this weeks podcast we give our reasons, metrics, and strategies for the upcoming month, and the second half we share our results. Enjoy! Part One: 1:22 Part Two: 32:30
Tired of hearing about Stormy Daniels horseface? Elizabeth Warren's 23 and Me results? Rosanne being killed off in "The Conners" and being tricked into thinking that ABC was able to poignantly tell a story about a terrible epidemic sweeping the country only to forget to think that they exploited that very epidemic as a narrative arc in attempts to salvage what is left of their show to make as much profit as possible as will be evident in their lack of addressing a solution to the opiod epidemic, which is far less profitable and dramatic as the death of the main star of the show? ......... Well you're in luck cause we are arguing about the best animated series pre and post 2000!!! From Steam Boat Willy all the what to Mr. Poopybutthole, Gap in expertise covers nearly a century of animated history to give you the absolute, empirical truth to what is the greatest cartoons ever made.
Trigger Warning: The podcast you are about to listen may upset you if you are offended by arguements with limited research, devoid of cohesive structure, or lacking any sexual or racial diversity beyond the scope of three white guys. As SoCalled so brilliantly put into song, Work With What You Got. On this weeks episode, Gap in Expertise talks SJWs. Let's face it, this topic is a dead horse that keeps on kicking, but a few of us still feel the need to take a few swings. We address the role of protective parenting, affects of social and mainstream media, and higher education in the formation of this far-left group. Also, #rehiregunn. Did we get something wrong? Tesla, Waymo, Delphi, Cadillac, and dozens of other tech/car manufacturing companies are quickly developing the technology to take humans out of the driver's seat. The most publicly prominent of these companies, Tesla, already has thousands of drivers casually ignoring their hands-off warnings, letting their cars do the driving as they catch up on their Twitter feed. This technology is also soon to explode on the commercial trucking industry, potentially putting millions of truck drivers and hundreds of lot lizards out of a job. So how does this technology work and is it safe? What does the potential near future hold for personal and public transport? Will fully self-driving cars simply be the eventual means of mankind's destruction once we reach the technological singularity? This week Atmun, Kyle, and Egil discuss the tech, morality, and potential ramifications of this new era in horseless carriages.
Penalties every play, concussions, rule changes, 24 hour media coverage, non-stop commercial breaks, politics, Thursday Night Football, and on and on and on. The NFL is losing viewers and we at Gap aren't so sure thats a bad thing. As much as we all at GAP used to love watching football on Sundays, it is becoming nearly unwatchable. So we're here to ask why, and since no one in the NFL will listen to us, offer our alternative for the best spectator sports that you SHOULD be watching. This week Kyle, Cale, Billy and Egil "tackle" - insert sensible chuckle - these NFL issues head-on, not unlike how most NFL players "tackle" these days: with little thought, skill, and increased risk of coming out of it with brain damage. Recently, several public figures who have been accused of sexual misconduct have begun re-emerging from their public exiles, most notably comedians Louis C.K. and Aziz Ansari. Reactions have been decidedly mixed both publicly and amongst other professional comedians as to comeback strategies, or even if they should be allowed to return at all. So what are the moral metrics for a proper return? How does the court of public opinion carry out sentencing? Who should hold the moral hammer of justice? With your consent, in this episode, several master debators, Jess, Dave, Keith, and Egil, try their hands at this hard topic. Did we get something wrong? What are we missing? Just in time for football season, Gap in Expertise is here to give you some of this season's best recipes for Southern Fried Nike's. Rubber soles can be tough so we recommend low and slow overnight in a smoker (preferably applewood) prior to the fry. Most people seems to be cooking over direct flame these days so what do we know. This week Kyle, Mike, Jamie, Billy, and Egil discuss the latest chapter in the Colin Kaepernick Saga. Is the campaign just political theater for Nike to boost sales? When have sports and politics successfully intersected in the past? Is kneeling during the anthem disrespectful to our flag and country? Will Gap in Expertise finally release the secret "Sean Hannity proves his patriotism by sodomizing himself with the flag while Trump watches" tape? You'll have to listen to find out! Seriously...why? This weeks episode is a conversation about phyiscal therapy and why it is that no one, aside from physical therapists, seems to know what it is that physical therapists actually do. We address why this may be (despite the profession existing for over 100 years), why current/past/potential patients should know more about us, and what solutions - some more feasible than others - may exist for this problem. This is also a conversation with two PTs, Steven and Egil, so for once we at Gap kind of know a little about what we are talking about (clearly not grammar). Have you ever wanted to quit your job, pack up your life, move to an unknown place where you have no family or friends to support you, live happily ever after with no regrets or worries that you may have in fact made the worst decision of your life and you should have just stayed home? Us too! And some of us at Gap have done just that. This week is less of a debate and more of a discussion with Cory and Egil about some of the hard decisions we have made in our life and careers, and what strategies we have used to help navigate these decisions. Universal Basic Income (UBI). What is it? Who gets it? Where does this money come from? What purpose does it serve? All these questions and more are tackled haphazardly in this episode of Gap in Expertise! Above all, this episode is probably our best of example how we have discussions about topics where we have significant differences in opinions. Part of the reason we are doing this podcast is to show an audience that people of different opinions can have productive discussions on difficult topics without casting aspersions and ruining friendships. In the first of many discussions about the Star Wars Universe, we (Mike, Pete, Jess, and Jamie) tackle one of the oldest questions concerning the history of that galaxy far, far away - was the Empire really that bad? In discussing this topic we talk about fascism, radical religious ideologies, the paralleled history of WWII and the atomic bomb, as well as the inevitable comparisons to todays war on terror. We get deep. We try to stay within the cannon of the movies but we may stray a bit, so settle in, divert all power to rear deflector shields, and enjoy this surprisingly sober podcast of a fictional work of science fiction. In this episode GIE addresses the recent increase in conversation about the effects of video games on violence in America. This conversation became a mainstream fixture in the news after the events in Columbine in 1999 and has been stoked again in public conversation by leading political figures including Trump and Kentucky governor Matt Bevins. Many other polititians including Hillary Clinton, Joseph Lieberman, and even the head of the NRA Wayne LaPierre have also at times held firm pubic stances on the detrimental effects of video games on society. We at GIE have other thoughts. Oh and we couldn't help but fumble around with "gun control" for a bit. In our first full episode, we talk about the utility and dangers of social media. Edgy right?? Well, we have to start somewhere and this is where we started, the low hanging fruit. Some of us accepted our own hypocrisies, some realized just how far they've come in developing their relationship with social media, and some just drank scotch and made fun of the whole premise... Enjoy!
Simply put, here is a quick primer on what this podcast is about and what I hope it will accomplish. I suppose I could also write a description that is 7 minutes long and post that here, but you didn't come here to read did you? Reading is for suckers.
