Send us a textThe cancellation of Stephen Colbert's show highlights a major shift in the media landscape as expensive TV production gives way to more cost-effective, audience-focused podcasting formats. When Stephen Colbert's show got axed, the immediate cultural response wasn't "start a YouTube channel" or "join TikTok". It was "launch a podcast." This reaction speaks volumes about where audience attention and creator opportunity now resides.Mentioned in this episode:Why Colbert Got Canceled by Nate Silver100 Best Podcasts of All TimeOur thoughts:The Late Show cost $100 million annually with 200 employees, making it financially unsustainableTraditional TV's aging audience (average 68 years old) doesn't appeal to advertisers seeking younger demographicsConan O'Brien's successful transition from TV (280,000 viewers) to podcasting (1.3 million listeners)Podcast production costs dramatically lower at $20,000 per episode for major networks, often under $100 for independentsCreative freedom in podcasting allows hosts to maintain their authentic voice without network interferenceMany former TV personalities finding success in podcasting: Trevor Noah, Bill O'Reilly, Rosie O'Donnell, and Keith Olbermann, for example. Even before the cancellation of 'The Late Show With Stephen Colbert,' the business of comedy was changing rapidly. Twenty years ago, comedians aspired to be late-night hosts, or to star in movies, or to have their own sitcoms. But in 2025, late-night shows are going extinct, adult comedies in Hollywood are a thing of the past, and popular sitcoms are so rare these days that Gen Z viewers are still watching 'The Office' and 'Friends.' Instead, many comedians rightly recognize that they can make more money as solo acts. In comedy, as in much of our culture, the age of institutions is giving way to an age of individuals talking to individuals. Lucas Shaw, a reporter for Bloomberg and frequent commentator on the Town podcast, joins the show to talk about the cancellation of 'The Late Show With Stephen Colbert' and what it says about the history and the future of comedy and media. We also talk about the death of adult comedies, the retreat of sitcoms on TV, why comedy as a field is becoming more of a solo business—and what that says about entertainment culture more broadly. CBS is canceling "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert." Parent company Paramount is in the middle of a multibillion-dollar merger with the studio Skydance. The deal needs approval from the Trump administration, and Colbert has been a harsh critic of the president. CNN's Brian Stelter joins us why CBS canceled the show. Then, historian Julian Zelizer says there was a time when voter unrest could move Congress. He recalls the Medicare Catastrophic Coverage Act of the 1980s, which passed with bipartisan support. But when voters revolted, Congress repealed the law. And, President Trump has signaled frustration with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as he pushes for a regional cease-fire. Michael Koplow, chief policy officer at the Israel Policy Forum, tells us more.Learn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy

Declassified Documents Reveal Obama-Era Plot Against Trump Newly unsealed intelligence from DNI Tulsi Gabbard shows that in 2016, Obama officials, led by CIA Director John Brennan and FBI Director James Comey, buried evidence that contradicted the Trump-Russia narrative. They proceeded with an Intelligence Community Assessment that falsely accused Trump of collusion. Gabbard calls it a treasonous conspiracy to subvert American democracy. Democrats Blame Trump for Colbert Show Cancellation CBS cancels “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” after suffering 40 to 50 million dollars in annual losses. Democrats, including Adam Schiff and Jake Tapper, accuse Trump of political interference, though no evidence supports the claim. Bryan explains how partisan hysteria is replacing reason. Chinese Engineers Removed from U.S. Defense and Agriculture Projects The Pentagon and USDA terminated dozens of Chinese nationals who had access to sensitive systems. Microsoft is criticized for allowing China-based engineers to maintain Department of Defense cloud systems.
