We deep dive into topics, veer madly off topic, and really just enjoy reading and researching about these books we love. We're here to talk our opinions; talk about other opinions; and just share our love of books!
comic book podcast, comic books, ladies, issues, hosts, fun, listening, girls talk comics.
Listeners of Girls Talk Comics that love the show mention:Master of Mediocrity enjoys a moment or two of blissful, serene, Yakuza energy slice-of-life comedy. Also, kudos to the Immortal Dragon's wife being such a boss that she can tame a Yakuza at the top of his game and have him thrive as a househusband
Your Master of Mediocrity is back to ruminate on team stories, protag energy and the well balanced - and heartbreaking - narrative of Assassination Classroom, a super popular manga AND anime!
Did you know the Butcher of Paris is a real serial killer? And that he did some hella f*cked up stuff during World War II, specifically during the Nazi occupation of Paris? Dude was definitely a monster who barely needed an excuse to engage in his messed up acts. The most riveting part of his psychosis was that he had convinced himself he was a “hero” fighting for liberation, when he was actually harming the most vulnerable Parisians of the time - Jewish Citizens. This graphic novel summary of his crimes provides pretty solid, non-speculative documentation of his dealings. Check it out!
The Master of Mediocrity and The Dame of Discourse are back to discuss Constantine being back in Si Spurrier's ‘John Constantine: Hellblazer.'
The Dame of Discourse Jamie and the Lt. of Literature Jess reunite in one classic - and horny - episode about one of the sexist sapphic comics out there: Sunstone. This erotic romantic comedy runs the gamut and, well, why shouldn't they? Take a listen!
Erin and Jamie sit down to chat The Girl from the Sea, by Molly Knox Ostertag
Erin, the Master of Mediocrity and Jamie, the Dame of Discourse reunite to talk Kim Reaper - an Oni Press comic featuring an overly eager Becka who accidentally follows her crush, Kim, to her part-time job: Grim Reaping. Kim and Becka get caught up in a wild ride of ghouls, cat-dads and a mech battle, all while trying to Kim happily employed through college. Check out what the Girls have to say today!
Master of Mediocrity and Elyse Russell chat The Dark Side of Purity, Band of Bards comic Kickstarter starting Jun 6. The Dark Side of Purity is an anthology combination of two books. A collection of prose and poetry in one book, with a second book for comics and graphic poetry. These works come from a stand out team of women and non-binary creators from all corners of literature. Inside these pages and panels you will find many different points of view on the traditional values of “purity," “chastity," and “womanliness." These stories and poems shine a light on how society has used Purity Culture as a means of control, and how these creators feel about it. You'll hear many different voices all lashing out against these tools of oppression and suppression.
The Dame of Discourse Jamie recently reviewed Galaxy: The Prettiest Star for For Everyone Media (Review – Galaxy: The Prettiest Star — foreveryonemedia) and with Girls Talk Comics prepping to kick off their Pride content, it seemed serendipitous to have Jamie and Erin meet up to talk Galaxy's story! The Girls chat the highs, the lows, and the “what if's” of Taelyr's journey from stereotypical basketball kid to Crowned Star Princess. Come along with us, Taelyr and Jadzia Axelrod as we Talk Comics!
Erin & Jamie talk Invisible Kingdom - G. Willow Wilson's sci-fi religious sandbox published by Dark Horse. Two women - Vess and Grix - encounter each other in a massive universe. Polar opposites, they have the same mission: revealing a universe destroying truth that shakes the foundations of all structures keeping the planets together. What could this secret be? Will the universes be rocked by the revelations? Or will the nihilistic apathy of the day allow for the continued suffering of the peoples across the planets? Come listen to the Master of Mediocrity and the Dame of Discourse discuss crises of faith; apathy; and why this book makes an appearance on our Reads for Pride 2022 Lists.
Erin and Jamie read Marian Ghost Centaur, a young adult book that provides a glimpse into a young woman's life as she wrestles with major changes happening to herself and the world around her. The world is falling out of love with Sasquatch and her hometown is feeling the squeeze. Does she have what it takes to stand up against the predatory online start up that has her home in its sights?
Jess declares Erin as her sworn mortal enemy! How DARE Erin make her feel!? Jess and Erin breakdown the impact of narratives and discuss how Daniel Warren Johnson strike a fine balance between a bizarre concept and reverent respect of serious topics. Thanks for listening!
The Girls meet to talk again about comics - no, wait, PROSE! Jess finally convinced Erin to read Iron Widow by Xiran Jay Zhao but for fun! She meant for it to just be a good read, but then Erin was all like "this shit is good, can we talk about it?" and Jess was like "YES PLEASE!" So we talk feminism, murder and how Iron Widow not only delivers us a power fantasy, but a compassionate look at all of those who are impacted by the institutional sexism of Huaxia. In a war-bound world, girls and boys are marched to the frontlines to serve their country using two brains to power mechas used to fight an invading alien force - but not all pilots survive. Why is it that women are sent to die and boys are sent for glory? What is it about the systems in place that justify this violence? Well, that's what we talk about. Give a listen!
The Master of Mediocrity and Lt of Literature discuss A Silent Voice from Yoshitoki Oima, with the English translation being originally released by Crunchyroll Manga and a film was adapted by Kyoto Animation. A Silent Voice is a coming-of-age, redemption, and psychological drama film that discusses bullying, disability, mental health, redemption, relationships, and recovery. Shoya Ishida, former bully, seeks forgiveness from Shoko Nishimiya, a young, deaf woman that he tormented when they briefly shared a classroom in elementary school. Shoya wants to redeem himself before he takes his life into his own hands, but ends up attempting to befirend Shoko instead. As they reconnect with prior classmates, secrets are revealed, forgiveness is sought, and characters attempt to take the final steps to take their lives. Episode was edited by Mitch.
