Punk rock educatrix, Tina Horn joins us to talk all things kink - cash fetishes, financial domination, spanking, bimbofication, cannibalism, feet, domming, oh my! Tina applies her signature curiosity, flirtatious wit, hyper intelligence and dirty mind, which you may be familiar with from her hit podcast Why Are People Into That?, to her new book and to our conversation. Why are People Into That: A Cultural Investigation of Kink (Tina's new book) breaks down kink practices and the most niche fetishes through a cultural lens, revealing the ways that BDSM is baked into and simultaneously gawked at in our culture. The book also explores Tina's own hard-earned experience in the kink community, a shared lineage she and Robin revel over in this week's episode. A common theme in many people's sexual fantasies is being “forced” to have sex. In the world of kink, this is widely known as consensual non-consent (CNC). So why is this such a popular sexual interest? In today's show, we're going to explore the psychology behind it. We're also going to delve into some of the political aspects of CNC fantasies and discuss how the growing emphasis on affirmative and enthusiastic consent might paradoxically be making these fantasies more popular than ever. I am joined once again by Tina Horn, author of the new book Why Are People Into That?: A Cultural Investigation of Kink. This book is based on her long-running podcast of the same name. Tina is also a comic book writer and host of the Wondery phone sex podcast titled Operator. Some of the specific questions we answer in this episode include: What does a CNC fantasy look like? What are some reasons people might be into CNC? What is the role of fear in sexual arousal? Why do people often struggle with feelings of shame around CNC fantasies, and how can they come to terms with it? You can visit Tina’s website to learn more about her work. Got a sex question? People have the potential to develop fetishes for virtually anything. If you can think of it, somebody probably has a fetish for it! However, fetishes remain among the most misunderstood and stigmatized sexual interests. So in today's show, we're going to dive into the world of fetishes and dispel some common misconceptions about them. We’ll also discuss a new way of thinking about fetishes, as well as tips for how to communicate about fetish interests with a partner. My guest is Tina Horn, author of the new book Why Are People Into That?: A Cultural Investigation of Kink. This book is based on her long-running podcast of the same name. Tina is also a comic book writer and host of the Wondery phone sex podcast titled Operator. Some of the topics we cover in this episode include: What is the advantage of thinking about fetishes as “something I have a taste for?” Where do fetishes come from? How important is it to know where fetishes come from? Does their origin really matter? Does having a fetish necessarily involve an exclusive attraction to a specific object? How can people incorporate fetishes into their sex lives in a healthy way? You can visit Tina’s website to learn more about her work. Got a sex question? Welcome to Episode 205! April is National Poetry Month and we are here for it. Emily is currently reading YOU ARE HERE: Poetry in the Natural World, a new anthology edited by Ada Limón, and Chris is reading BOATS FOR WOMEN by Sandra Yannone. Since our last episode, Chris finished listening to WAKE UP WITH PURPOSE! What I've Learned in my First Hundred Years by Sister Jean Dolores Schmidt. She also enjoyed the first issue of DEPROG by Tina Horn, Gab Contreras, Dani Strips, and Lisa Sterle, and dipped into RIVER EAST, RIVER WEST by Aube Rey Lescure (long listed for the Women's Prize). Emily read two suspense thrillers: INTIMACIES by Katie Kitamura and WHEN THE CICADAS CRY by Caroline Cleveland, and then went to a happier place with A BAKER'S YEAR: Twelve Months of Baking and Living the Simple Life at the Smoke Signals Bakery by Tara Jensen. As always we talk about what we're reading, what we want to read, and Biblio Adventures we've been on, like seeing Rachel Slade discuss her new book MAKING IT IN AMERICA: The Almost Impossible Quest to Manufacture in the U.S.A. and How It Got That Way, at R.J. Julia Booksellers in Madison, CT. Happy Listening & Happy Reading!

“2. Porn overemphasizes visual stimuli Researchers have gone back and forth on whether cisgender men's and women's brains differ in their responses to sexual imagery. The latest research appears to show that there's no difference. Either way, I know that the way I like to have sex has been shaped by watching porn, rather than, say, reading or listening to it. Along with showing a variety of penetrative sex positions, the typical porn scene features an assortment of camera angles. These often focus on women's butts, boobs, and vaginas, while minimizing shots of the men's bodies other than their penis. Male pornstars have talked about this: “You need to get yourself in uncomfortable positions, because it disconnects you from the scene. And it allows the audience to put themselves in.” This has definitely distorted how I show up in the bedroom. It's hard to imagine feeling pleasure if I closed my eyes or was wearing a blindfold. Just like with the emphasis on penetration, focusing on vision is a narrow way to experience sex. There are sensations, sounds, words, tastes, smells, and who knows what else floating around the room. In fact, a new study found that people who place more value on their sense of smell in romantic encounters consistently had a stronger sexual desire for their partners. Fortunately, there are now a number of sites the feature audio porn. “Audio really stimulates someone's inner life, their imagination, which is fertile ground for sexual fantasy,” writer and host of the “Why Are People Into That?!” podcast Tina Horn told Men's Health. There's also erotica, or written word porn.” -https://jeremymohler.medium.com/5-ways-porn-conditions-men-to-have-worse-sex-cc3bf4f6c777 --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/antonio-myers4/support

It's Valentine's Day, and the pod is serving up a hot 'n spicy episode with educatrix, writer, and former AVN-nominated director, Tina Horn! Regarding her sexuality, Tina says "as soon as I knew that I had a crush on Fox Mulder, I knew I had a crush on Dana Scully." Unfortunately, she was growing up in a small, homophobic town in Northern California, and so the majority of her early sexual partners were restricted to cis men. Tina categorizes those early experiences as "all right," but even as an adolescent, she was already aware of a fundamental truth: "I knew that I really liked sex, and I wanted to do it all the time, and I wanted more variety and, like, different kinds of sex." Tina discusses becoming a sex worker at a time when the Bay Area had a thriving queer and feminist porn scene, and explains why it is so important for her to be out as such, even though her time in the sex industry has "waxed and waned over the years." We also talk about Tina's comic series, "Deprog" (which features a hardboiled leatherdyke detective and a genderqueer femme fatale!), and her upcoming book of fetish cultural criticism, "Why Are People Into That?" based on her long-running podcast of the same name. All this, plus Lauren gives a special Queer Root Shout-Out (TM) to the most sapphic music video of ALL TIME!Go to tinahorn.net to find out where you can pre-order both "Deprog" and "Why Are People Into That?: A Cultural Investigation of Kink" (and while you're there, sign up for Tina's newsletter as well!). Accomplished writer, podcaster (Why Are People Into That?!?), educator, and kink connoisseur, Tina Horn joins Sarah and Robin to unpack consensual non-consent. Tina brings her signature wit and intellect to this nuanced discussion about total power exchange. The conversation covers why non-consensual dynamics can be enticing to explore in play and the metaphorical nature of fantasy play. We dive into how complicated it is to clearly define consent and dismantle rape culture, the appeal of monster sex, BDSM as storytelling, and we learn about the 90s heartthrobs that left an impression on Tina. The conversation wraps up with a glimpse into Tina's process of developing her riveting, sex-positive, sci fi dystopian comic book series SfSx.CW: this episode touches on forced sex, and rape fantasies. This collection of narrative essays by sex workers presents a crystal-clear rejoinder: there's never been a better time to fight for justice. Responding to the resurgence of the #MeToo movement in 2017, sex workers from across the industry--hookers and prostitutes, strippers and dancers, porn stars, cam models, Dommes and subs alike--complicate narratives of sexual harassment and violence, and expand conversations often limited to normative workplaces. Writing across topics such as homelessness, motherhood, and toxic masculinity, We Too: Essays on Sex Work and Survival (Feminist Press, 2021) gives voice to the fight for agency and accountability across sex industries. With contributions by leading voices in the movement such as Melissa Gira Grant, Ceyenne Doroshow, Audacia Ray, femi babylon, April Flores, and Yin Q, this anthology explores sex work as work, and sex workers as laboring subjects in need of respect--not rescue. A portion of this book's net proceeds will be donated to SWOP Behind Bars (SBB). Rachel Stuart is a sex work researcher whose primary interest is the lived experiences of sex workers. For more on racism in porn, there are a few things I recommend: For a short article that I feel covers a lot, at least briefly, read Tracy Clark-Flory's, "Porn's Race Problem". For an in-depth, highly researched study, read Mireille Miller-Young's A Taste of Brown Sugar. For a podcast that features Mickey Mod, turn to my perennial favorite, Why Are People Into That?!, hosted by Tina Horn, in the episode titled: Interrobang: Mickey Mod on Porn Stigma & Love. In this passionate interview with sexuality activist, writer and educator Tina Horn, we dive into the issues of sexual exploration. Discussing the history and vision behind her podcast “Why Are People Into That?!,” we explore the notion of sexual shame and privilege from a personal and political framework. From there the notion of the whorearchy (the hierarchy of sex work) is explored, alongside the recent sex worker resource shut-downs and why it should matter to everyone. Come learn from this amazing being who once sold a dildo to Beyonce. Really.
