Your Kitchen Countertop Could Be Making Workers Sick

Engineered stone, or quartz, is a man-made material made with high concentrations of silica that is commonly used to make kitchen countertops in the U.S. And it's making the workers who cut this material sick. And even though California has safety rules in place to reduce the risk to workers, some say it's time to ban the use of engineered stone altogether. This episode first aired on Dec. 15, 2025. Surprise: the star of KBIS wasn't a futuristic gadget but the return of character. We dive into a wave of “what's old is new again,” where doors get beaded and chamfered profiles, mullions and mesh come back with purpose, and stained glass quietly flexes in kitchens and baths. After years of flat fronts and white shaker, this shift doesn't feel fussy—it feels intentional, with cleaner proportions, smarter materials, and a warmer, crafted vibe.We break down the material story driving that warmth: rift-cut white oak, walnut, and even revived cherry, paired with natural stone that's reclaiming space from quartz. Countertops move beyond the square edge to ogee, double ogee, and bullnose, while thin 1–2 cm slabs unlock thermoformed curves and softer geometry. We tackle the practical side too—how to maintain ergonomic heights with thinner tops and how new textured finishes manage cleanup. The room expands beyond cabinets as arches, wide crowns, paneled walls, and bold trim treatments turn kitchens into cohesive architectural statements. Color's still surging, but now in matte appliance finishes—hot pink, mauve, navy, and leafy greens that sit comfortably next to honest wood and stone. There's a fresh frontier as well: luxe closets. We're seeing full-on kitchen-level detailing in wardrobe spaces, from fluted panels and glass doors to island-grade surfaces and lighting. Tile tech adds drama with oversize “wallpaper” porcelains and custom-printed trims that match pattern and tone. And for anyone heading to a massive trade show, we share our battle-tested plan to see more, stress less, and actually capture what matters—when to walk which hall, how to avoid the mobbed booths, and how to mine your photos for early trend signals. The industry mood is upbeat, even as hiring remains tough and AI enters the chat; the real opportunity lies in pairing human craft with better tools and a sharper eye for detail. If this kind of design intel fuels your work, follow along, share the episode with a colleague, and leave a quick review so others can find it. Concrete is a craft best learned shoulder to shoulder. In this episode of The Concrete Podcast, Brandon Gore and Jon Schuler announce the upcoming Concrete Heroes Quest workshop in Napa, California, a three day hands on training for makers working with concrete countertops, GFRC, and decorative concrete. The goal is simple: bring the concrete community together, because we get better faster when we learn together. From there, the conversation moves into real questions coming from the decorative concrete world. They break down the difference between true patina and sealer failure, why white concrete countertop samples can look completely different depending on exposure, and why professional grade mixes outperform DIY bagged materials. Brandon also explains his method for casting seamless waterfall concrete countertops using SCC GFRC and why proper mix design is critical for success. The episode also includes an update to Kodiak Pro Maker Mix. After refining one of the raw materials with the manufacturer, the mix now delivers improved flowability and consistency, along with updated guidance for water and TBP plasticizer. If you work with concrete countertops, concrete sinks, or decorative concrete furniture, this episode offers practical insights to help you avoid costly mistakes and produce better results. If you have ever mixed a batch late at night, chased a finish that mattered, or stood behind your work when it would have been easier to walk away, this episode is for you. Join us as we chat about these home improvement topics and questions from callers like you: - Clear Advice on Buying New Windows: We simplify the confusing process of buying new windows by explaining the labels from the National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC). Understanding these ratings will help you compare energy performance and save money. - Granite Countertops in a Weekend: If you're noticing areas that need help in the kitchen, we share an easy DIY solution to give your countertops a fresh, sleek look with a smooth granite finish in just one weekend. - Holiday Lighting Safety: We offered safe and sound tips for holiday decorating, such as checking all your lights for the UL seal of approval for safety. We also discussed easy ways to replace frayed lighting strands from last year. Q & A: - Sally reported that her two large, double-pane picture windows are fogged up with moisture trapped between the panes. Unfortunately, this moisture indicates a failed Thermopane seal, which cannot be restored or repaired, so replacement is the only viable remedy. - Tim in Michigan is dealing with wrinkles in his sheet vinyl linoleum floor and mentioned that the subfloor beneath the kitchen addition is uneven. We recommend he first use a floor leveling compound to smooth out the subfloor, and then install a new, affordable product instead of chasing the issues with the old sheet product. - Maya in Iowa needs to remove old, glued-on outdoor carpet that is deteriorating on her concrete steps. She should use a chemical adhesive remover to soften the glue for easier scraping, and then consider covering the steps with an outside-rated ceramic tile or thin pavers. - Greg in Louisiana has a toilet shut-off valve handle that broke off, and he needs to replace the valve with limited working space between the pipe and the wall. We recommend using PEX fittings, which are inexpensive and easy to install without soldering. - Beverly wants to paint her cedar patio posts white to match her home's trim, but her builder warned that painting would trap moisture and cause the posts to rot. We advise her to disregard the builder's warning, prime the posts with an oil-based primer, and then apply a solid color stain to protect the wood.   ASK A QUESTION: Need help with your own home improvement or décor question? Key topics include acquiring utensils from non-Jews: new metal items require Tevilah (immersion in a mikvah) but not Kashering if unused, while repaired vessels over 3–5 ounces need re-Tevilah only if significantly renewed. Countertops like granite are easily Kashered with boiling water, but manufactured stones (e.g., quartz/quartzite) may pose absorption issues—consult a rabbi before purchase. Porcelain sinks can't be Kashered, favoring stainless steel; Formica Kashers via hot water pour-over or steaming iron. Grills reaching 600°F self-Kasher through Libun Gamur (full incineration), and oven self-clean cycles achieve the same.Callers explore nuances like rust (clean for health, not halacha), small vessels (exempt from re-Tevilah if repaired minimally), and non-kosher materials (wood, plastic, silicone can't be Kashered—dedicate new ones to meat/dairy/parve). Mikvahs are pristine via advanced filtration, with separate pools for women, men, and utensils to maintain sanctity. Rabbi Wolbe shares anecdotes, like koshering a friend's grill covertly or his grandmother's accidental dairy-after-meat dessert, stressing mistakes are growth opportunities—inform hosts of your kitchen status to avoid issues. On broader themes, Rabbi Wolbe advises against expecting moral perfection from politicians; Jewish voting prioritizes safety for Jews here and in Israel, reevaluating per election without herd mentality. Torah leaders (e.g., Rebbe Aaron Leib Steinman) exemplify angelic character alongside wisdom. The episode promotes mikvah tours, supporting Jewish products when possible, and embracing ones personal spiritual journey without shame. Please submit your questions at askaway@torchweb.org_____________The Everyday Judaism Podcast is dedicated to learning, understanding and appreciating the greatness of Jewish heritage and the Torah through the simplified, concise study of Halacha, Jewish Law, thereby enhancing our understanding of how Hashem wants us to live our daily lives in a Jewish way._____________This Podcast Series is Generously Underwritten by Marshall & Doreen LernerDownload & Print the Everyday Judaism Halacha Notes:https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1RL-PideM42B_LFn6pbrk8MMU5-zqlLG5This episode (Ep. #73) of the Everyday Judaism Podcast by Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe of TORCH is dedicated to my dearest friends, Marshall & Doreen Lerner! They unpack why DIY-grade concrete often leads to cracking, discoloration, and sealer failure, and why pro mixes actually save money in the long run. It's an honest look at dollars, cents, and craftsmanship - because when you're building something meant to last, the hardware store option usually costs you the most. Most makers carry a quiet frustration - they want their work to be lighter, stronger, and more refined, but the materials and methods they've been handed keep them stuck in the old way of doing things. This week we pull back the curtain on GFRC, a material that changes the game for concrete countertops, sinks, and furniture. You'll hear how GFRC stands apart from traditional mixes, why it matters for strength and beauty, and how it frees you from the weight and limitations of standard pours. We'll talk mixing, spraying, fiber, and the myths that keep many craftspeople from unlocking its full potential. At the heart of it, this isn't just about concrete - it's about your story as a maker. When you learn to harness the right materials, you save time, reduce stress, and create pieces that set you apart. That's what every artisan wants: the freedom to create without compromise. And here's the thing - tools like Kodiak Pro products exist to put that freedom in your hands. They're engineered by makers, for makers. The result? Less time fixing problems, more time building the kind of work that carries your name forward.

Whether you're a DIY warrior or just looking to freshen up your space, this episode is packed with tips, tricks, and maybe even a few dad jokes—because who says home improvement can't be fun? So, grab your toolbox and let's get this countertop party started! When it comes to countertops, who better to guide us than Eric G? In this jam-packed hour, he shares his extensive knowledge gained over 35 years as a kitchen and bath designer, and let me tell you, it's a treasure trove of wisdom. We kick things off with Eric urging us to consider the entire project plan before diving into countertop selection. It's all about the big picture, folks! Why waste time and money installing a countertop only to realize you need to replace the cabinets underneath it? Eric's advice is clear: do it all at once to save yourself from a world of pain later on.Throughout the show, Eric unpacks the various materials that can grace our countertops. He's got the scoop on everything from the classic beauty of marble to the modern durability of quartz. But wait—there's more! He introduces us to the wonders of sintered stone and paper stone, which are shaking up the countertop game. With a sprinkle of humor and a dash of personal stories, Eric paints a picture of how to choose the right material based on your lifestyle, budget, and the look you're going for. He shares tales of his own home projects, giving us a glimpse into his design process and how he tackles challenges along the way.As the hour flies by, Eric starts breaking down the countertop choices room by room. Whether it's for a sleek bathroom or a bustling kitchen, he offers practical advice that's easy to digest. And let's not forget his witty commentary on common pitfalls—seriously, you don't want to get caught with a countertop that doesn't play nice with the moisture of a bathroom or the heat of a kitchen! By the end of this episode, listeners will not only have a clearer understanding of what countertop materials to choose but also feel empowered to embark on their own home improvement adventures. So, whether you're a seasoned DIYer or a newbie, grab your tools and let's get to work!Takeaways: When choosing countertops, think about the overall project plan to avoid costly mistakes later on. Marble looks stunning but may not be practical for families with kids due to stains and maintenance. Consider man-made materials like quartz for their durability and stain resistance, especially in busy kitchens. Sintered stone is becoming popular for outdoor kitchens due to its durability against extreme weather conditions. If you're going for a DIY project, materials like paper stone offer a unique aesthetic and are surprisingly manageable. Don't forget to think about the backsplash materials simultaneously when designing your kitchen or bathroom surfaces. We'll also cover crucial indoor home improvement topics, because inside or outside, we're on your side! We're sharing the top five most crucial filters in your home that you need to be checking and cleaning. You might be surprised you have so many! - Summer Design Trends of 2025: Summer is the perfect time for home design projects, from small updates to major overhauls. We'll dive into the top eight summer design trends for 2025, including "color drenching," metallic accents, beverage stations, fun zones, "wood drenching," French country decor, and water conservation in landscaping.   OUR CALLERS: - Carol in Texas wanted to know if she could pressure wash and re-stain weathered treated lumber on her porches with a transparent stain, much like her new porch. - Brian in Massachusetts called in about painting his honey oak kitchen cabinets white and asked about the necessary preparation, especially for filling in the deep grain. - Bonnie faced a dilemma with sealing concrete after flood damage, seeking a less toxic alternative to a strong-smelling basement sealer. - Byron successfully removed his popcorn ceiling and wanted to know the proper next steps for prepping and painting the now-flat surface. - Steve in Arizona inquired about the necessity and benefits of having his air ducts cleaned. - Jonas in Washington was looking to add a fascia-mounted railing to his balcony for more space, but was concerned about a gutter that was currently in the way. - Alex in Florida reached out because his four-year-old central air conditioning system works well, except for one front room that's consistently about five degrees hotter than the rest of the house.   ASK A QUESTION: Need help with your own home improvement or décor question?
