Episode #227: The Prettiest Picture  (Song starts at 5:14) I wrote this song for my mother (Mum), back in 1987 {!). I remember like it was yesterday. It was Mother's Day, in the morning and I'd remembered. I like to give some sort of an original gift, so I thought I'll paint mum a picture. Yes, I thought I would come up with something suitable in a couple of hours, rock around to Mum's house in the afternoon and deliver it. Unfortunately the painting just didn't come together. It wasn't up to scratch at all. So, plan b: I sat down, pen in hand and wrote some lyrics. Here's a song for mum Just written to say how much you mean to me. So it sounds like a letter, initially. What came out eventually was: this song was the prettiest picture I could paint, which became the ‘punchline' of the lyrics. Then I sat at the piano, wrote the music, recorded a demo and delivered the tape a couple of hours later. This was song #23. Looking back, 1987 was a formative year for me, as a composer. I found I could really do it. And as an artist, too, I also realised I could sing well enough to be more confident about my vocals. Recording myself was a good idea.. It's also a great idea to write lyrics down. Put them together, in some sort of tangible form. I recommend an A4 book. Lyrics, chords and hints of melody (in lower case above each syllable), plus some rhythmical notes, too. I find I just need to start all of these old songs, and the whole arrangements come back to me in a flash. In fact, when I wrote it, I imagined straight away it would go equally well on the guitar. As usual, this episode became a bit of an observation on life. My mum passed away last year, so I guess I was quite reflective as I winged proceedings (as I do, on this podcast - there are no notes to follow, no script). One of the things that came to light is: sometimes ‘creatives' are viewed as almost a different species. Yes, we have specialised skills that can be honed, but I think to be human is to create. Everyone creates. We have choice as to how to feel, how we react (act). I figure we may as well do good things in this life. That's why I've put a mountain of art and music, writing and spoken word online, these last 200 odd weeks. I've archived my work and I hope it's entertaining and helping people. Feedback, to date, would indicate this has the case, which is great. Speaking of archiving, I think I better do some more backing up. The digital domain isn't exactly stable at times. My music computer might have done it's last bit of recording with this episode. Some very bizarre noises were happening. The upshot is: this recording is in mono. I got there, just. Finishing it took some thinking outside the square. So I'm going to take a break for a few weeks. I'll be back rejuvenated, with a recording system that's operating in the NY. See you then. In the mean time, if you'd like to hear more like this, There's another 226 episodes you can listen to retrospectively. Producing this podcast has been so rewarding, often surprising, in so many ways. Thanks for reading this and I hope you enjoy hearing how the words and music came together for   'The Prettiest Picture I could Paint', ( this one's for you, Margaret, delivery #2.). Enjoy,

Bernie writes "Wes, I'm seventy three years old now and live in the beautiful Texas hill country southwest of Austin. This is what happened fourteen years ago. It was my last night at work and I was closing up my department in Salmon Creek, at the north end of Vancouver, Washington. My best friend called and asked if I was flying out soon. She wanted me to come by, and said she had a twelve pack of Blue Moon. "Prettiest lady I know" I affirmed as I headed toward Battleground. We hung out for a couple hours. Her boyfriend had cheated on her and I listened to her broken heart with sympathy, and I tried to give her hope for the future. We said our hasta la vistas. I got back on I-5 north and got off at Woodland and headed up Lewis River Road. I had been living there for six weeks in a spare bedroom I was renting. It was a ways to my boss's property, on up past the fish hatchery, almost to Ariel where D.B. Cooper supposedly bailed out of that airliner, west of Mt. St. Helens. The moon was nearly full on that night of August 22, 2010, as I parked in my spot 30 feet from the forest, just off to my left. My window was down and I was listening to the radio. The Foo Fighters were playing "Times Like These." The tree frogs loudly approved and I popped open my last Blue Moon that Darcy sent home with me. I lit a cigarette, reflecting on our good times, how much I was going to miss her, and hoping our paths would meet again. Speaking of missing, I was seriously missing my two teenaged daughters that currently lived in Texas for the past six weeks. Tomorrow was Monday, my son's 39th birthday, and I'd be in Raleigh with him Wednesday night. I had a lot on my mind. I looked to my right scanning for life. Tina's doublewide sat on 4 acres, and was dark and silent, the front door 80 feet from me at my 3 o'clock. No signs of her sister and brother-in-law, who were notorious for wandering in the moonlight, but it was only one o'clock in the morning right now. I had another smoke and nursed my beer as it had been a very long day at work. I couldn't believe my ears when suddenly out of nowhere, what sounded like a million birds started screaming in the forest just to my left. Every hair on my body stood out as I reached to kill the radio. This surreal cacophony went on for maybe a whole minute when I heard something that would have knocked me over had I not been sitting in my car. I have since listened to vocalizations on YouTube and the nearest thing to what I heard was "The Ohio Sound," except that was far away and I was probably less than 100 feet away from the source here. Also there was no descending vocalization once it reached it's deafening crescendo. The force behind that howl/scream was somewhere between a really hungry lion, and a very pissed off T-Rex. Think up-close Jurassic Park. I was sitting in my old Ford Contour and my bones and organs were vibrating. I have since learned that was the result of the infrasound it produced. I was terrified and felt disoriented, also effects of infrasound. Things have never really scared me. Hell, I'm an old guy from Texas. I'd seen lots of crazy shit, but I jus0couldn't move. I just sat there thinking someone like me might get eaten. When the roar finally peaked, the birds and frogs were totally silent; not a single peep or croak was heard, and I was still vibrating. The silence was broken by a few seconds of the sound of something moving away in the woods. There was a creek in a ravine out there about 50 yards straight ahead and I started hearing what sounded like large rocks smashing against others. I happened to look at the front porch as Tina turned the light on and stuck her head out, looked my way, dipped back and closed the door. I figured since the beast was in the ravine, I had a chance to make a run for the house. I was shaking when I entered, and she said I was pale and asked what was wrong. I told her I thought she had a Sasquatch in her back yard. She just laughed and laughed and laughed. I told her I was serious, but she snickered and I went to bed. It took a long time to fall asleep that night. The next day I avoided the backyard and drove into Vancouver to get my cat. I pretty much stayed in my room when we got back. The next day I sold my car to Tina's mother and stayed in my room. Wednesday, Tina drove me to Portland to fly to Raleigh. I told my son about it after I had been there a couple days. He was intrigued, and then I put it all in a box for several years. I knew people would laugh. I wish assholes were as hard to find as Sasquatches. I never mentioned it again. A couple months ago I started listening to podcasts, especially yours, and it's really been all consuming, but in a very beneficial way: the realization of the existence of an ancient, feral species that has no concept or need of money to survive. They are truly free. I feel we are the newcomers here, living our lives in chains."

“There's so many celebrations in the city of San Miguel and parades and holidays. I literally never know what I'm going to come across when I turn a corner. And that is really inspiring and invigorating for me. Especially because I lived in the States for so many years and things became too predictable. I would without hesitation say that there's not a lot of predictability here for good and for bad. It is always changing, it is challenging and it is really wonderful and keeps you on your feet.” We're in great company with Amanda Keidan, Owner, Curator and Designer of Casa Delphine, an eco-conscious and design-focused, small luxury boutique hotel located in the heart of San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. Shortly after opening, Casa Delphine was recognized by Condé Nast Traveler as one of the best in Mexico, “a petite hotel in the heart of the old city that signals the next wave of creatives coming through and moving in.”  Amanda is a testament to that creativity, having spent her career building Keidan Jewelry, creating one-of-a-kind heirloom jewelry and handmade collections, before falling in love with the sense of place and the people that make up San Miguel de Allende, wanting to add her signature touch to this vibrant community.  In this episode, Amanda invites travelers to come to relax, stay to be inspired, and leave satiated by the sights, sounds, scents and flavors of Mexico's most charming and festive city. Top Takeaways [2:00] Amanda lived much of her life coast to coast, from NYC to LA - traveling much of the world before she first came across San Miguel de Allende back in 2017 and decided like many who visit, that she did not want to leave.  [5:10] After finding a 5-bedroom house for sale in the heart of the city, dreaming of the ways she could redesign and recreate the space, it was the encouragement of friends who saw the creative spark in Amanda, telling her to “go for it.”  [13:40] Life in San Miguel is full of village charm - seeing familiar faces on the cobblestone streets, saying hello to strangers sitting next to you in the café, stumbling across the most talented artisans still making things by hand.  [16:10] Expect to experience the most jaw-dropping, delicious places when staying at Casa Delphine as Amanda and her team take great pride in curating the best and the brightest recommendations around town. [18:50] Amanda brings out a feminine personality, with French and Moroccan elements to accompany the grand architecture of the home - full of cacti-filled open courtyards, geometric windows letting in lots of natural sunlight and curved brick ceilings of dramatic heights.  [27:40] Dine In Good Company at Casa Delphine in a setting you've never experienced before - joining in one of their famed “Tarot Dinners” where strangers gather together around a communal table, share a multi-course dinner prepared by a locally acclaimed chef, and participate in a tarot reading which invites the most sincere conversations.  [32:34] There's so much to see, sip and savor in and around San Miguel de Allende, including a specialty secret drink found on a local ranch called “Parajete” or “Cowboy Coffee.”  [42:40] “Dia De Los Muertos” or the “Day Of The Dead” is one of the most iconic holidays to experience the culture of San Miguel as the entire city comes out in costume to celebrate this festival of life.  Notable Mentions Pedro Friedeberg Arts La Santísima Trinidad Rancho Sol Dorado Casa Dragones Tequila Tour & Tasting Disney Pixar's Coco  Visit For Yourself Casa Delphine Website @casadelphine Keidan Jewelry Website @keidanjewelry Stay In Good Company Website

Buonconvento, is it Tuscany's prettiest village? - Ep. 160

What's Up Tuscany English

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 1, 2023 26:35

After spending almost three years talking about my wonderful homeland, some of you might wonder how a one man band seems always able to find reasonably interesting topics. The process is a lot messier than I'd like but sometimes it borders sheer madness. This week, for example, I had scheduled a completely different episode but decided against it. I tossed the notes I had already taken and started staring at the map, looking for inspiration. A name immediately attracted my attention, a weird but auspicious name of a little town near Siena. I had been there years ago and found it very pretty but I had no idea it was hiding so many interesting things. This is why this week What's Up Tuscany will bring you to Buonconvento, what many consider one of Italy's prettiest villages and tell you everything there is to know about this small but very quirky hamlet. If you listen to the full episode you will learn how, for a hot minute, this town had all the eyes of Europe on it due to the mysterious death of an emperor and how, centuries ago, the famous writer Boccaccio immortalized forever the crazy tale of a cheeky and very unfaithful servant. Then I will walk you downtown to discover the secrets of the town hall, the funny clock tower that looks like a smaller replica of Siena's Torre del Mangia and why this Mediaeval town is so full of Liberty-style buildings, Italy's answer to Art Nouveau architecture. In the following chapter I will tell you about the outstanding museum that hosts some of Italy's greatest sacred art masterpieces and a smaller barn conversion that is dedicated to the life of regular farmers of the past. If you're into the spooky side of life, I will guide you to a beautiful villa on a nearby hill that, according to many locals, is haunted by the ghost of its owner. In the final chapters I'll tell you about a small pastry shop nearby that, since 1959, has become a must stop for sweets lovers everywhere. As Queen Elizabeth II was a great fan of their cookies, they have built quite a following overseas but some of their unique creations are so good that it's worth travelling there so that you can taste them out of the oven. Last but not least, I'll let you know about a very interesting day trip through the Orcia and Arbia Valleys with historic locomotives, an incredible hotel that was built from restoring an abandoned village and, at least as far as I'm concerned, one of the best restaurants around. While its name is odd, "The Crazy Count", the food they serve is out of this world, especially the local cheese. The Val d'Arbia is nowhere near as popular as some other parts of Tuscany but it has so much to offer. Think about going there next time you plan your next visit.Email: podcast@larno.itFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/larno.itTwitter: @arno_it / @WhatsupTuscanyLINKS TO SOURCES (ITALIAN ONLY)https://www.tuscanypeople.com/buonconvento-di-nome-e-di-fatto/https://www.finestresullarte.info/viaggi/buonconvento-luogo-felice-crete-senesihttps://www.tuscanysweetlife.com/province/provincia-siena/buonconvento/https://siviaggia.it/borghi/borgo-buonconvento-toscana/217877/https://www.ledolcezzedinanni.com/https://www.pieveasalti.it/https://www.trenonatura.terresiena.itinfo@visionedelmondo.it / +39 0577 48003BACKGROUND MUSICPipe Choir - Bom Bom Breakthrough (Instrumental)Incompetech - Leopard Print ElevatorWayne John Bradley - Pick You UpMike Chino - Calm and HarmonyWUFO - Hyde ParkPipe Choir - Gemini (Instrumental)Wayne John Bradley - Blues Rock Original InstrumentalAll released under Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International Licensehttps://soundcloud.com/pipe-choir-2/pipe-choir-bom-bom-breakthrough-creative-commons-instrumentalhttps://incompetech.com/music/royalty-free/index.html?isrc=USUAN1500077https://soundcloud.com/ayneohnradley/pick-you-up-slow-poprock-style-instrumental-creative-commonshttps://soundcloud.com/argofox/mike-chino-calm-and-harmonyhttps://soundcloud.com/argofox/wufo-hyde-parkhttps://freemusicarchive.org/music/Pipe_Choir/SGONS_Instrumentals/Pipe_Gemini_Instrumentalhttps://soundcloud.com/ayneohnradley/blues-rock-original-instrumentalcreative-commonshttp://www.pipechoir.com/

Both parents disappeared from his early life and his life journey was about to become a roller-coaster with no guarantees. Corey is never one to sugar coat his experiences. He had to sell himself to totally unsuitable foster parent candidates in the hope they would take him in. Once in a family he was subjected to cruelty, dysfunction and in once case sexual abuse. “We live in an age of ugly beauty. Reverence for beauty is just an escape from reality, it is the perpetual adolescent in us refusing to accept a flawed world” ~ author, Nancy Etcoff (Survival of the Prettiest). Research shows that society has long impacted our standards of beauty, playing a role in affecting beauty trends, body image, and self-esteem, and increasingly this is exacerbated by social media. In this episode of the Advancing Women Podcast, I talk with actress, singer, and songwriter Schonte Hamilton. Schonte is passionate about promoting body positivity and acceptance. She is the CEO of F.A.W.O.C. (For All Women of Color), a company that empowers women of all colors, in the world of entertainment. We explore deeply entrenched beauty standards and consequences including digitized dysmorphia and the dangerous, even life-threatening lengths women go to in attaining unrealistic beauty standards. We talk about money, power, capitalism, and patriarchy  in a multi-billion-dollar industry that creates images of beauty and then “peddles them as opium for the female masses.” Don't miss this important and timely conversation.
