Today we celebrate the legacy of Caliban with founding member Marc Görtz and newest member Kenneth Iain Duncan. This chat has a wide perspective from Marc creating this band over 25 years ago in high school to Iain who was a long time listener being able to join the band with some incredibly fresh elements. Also speaking of those new elements Caliban is on the verge of releasing their new album titled Back From Hell on April 25th! Marc lets us know he wasn't too happy with their previous release and how this one is kind their redemption album that signifies a hard reset of the band and direction for the future. We are one of the few who had the pleasure to listen to it early and are absolutely obsessed! In our opinion it doesn't have a bad track and around sharing this interview we genuinely look forward in hearing what long time Caliban fans think after they drop this atomic bomb of absolute BANGERS!
For over two decades, Caliban has stood as one of the defining forces in metalcore. With their upcoming album ‘Back from Hell' that is scheduled for a release 25th April 2025, the German band continues to evolve their sound while staying true to the intensity and emotion that have defined their career. Led by founding members Andreas Dörner (vocals) and Marc Görtz (guitar), the band's current lineup includes new vocalist and bassist Iain Duncan, whose clean vocals, songwriting skills and diverse perspective and experience bring a fresh dimension to their already powerful dynamic. Complemented by longtime drummer Patrick Grün and guitarist Denis Schmidt, Caliban's formidable lineup is poised to deliver a relentless and emotionally charged experience that reaffirms their status as metalcore pioneers. Back From Hell explores themes of inner struggle, resilience, and catharsis, blending their signature crushing riffs and guttural vocals with atmospheric melodies and modern production. We spoke to Marc and Iain about the new album, digging into the detail around it and how it came to be. We speak about the time, the effort, the energy, and everything else that went into it and how to move forward, they had to embrace aspects of their past. Caliban's future has never looked brighter. Also this week, Tom updates us on Burnley FC and James Trafford's deal with JJ Watt, plus he uncovers a rather unexpected service at a garden centre in Bagshot. The boys also catch up on their weeks, covering the latest in the Rugby Six Nations and NFL free agency. Callum's Teachings delivers another round of mind-expanding thoughts, including an unusual question about underwear. Tom's Journal is packed with the funniest internet finds of the week, and in our ‘Single of the Week' segment, we spotlight an exciting new track you need to hear. Rebekah and Klaus are held captive in a sanatorium as another resurrected witch, Genevieve, gets her turn to tell her story. And, uh …. It's kinda fair that she's pissed! Meanwhile, Elijah enlists Hayley and Marcel to solve a tattoo based riddle, which causes Marcel to come clean about 1919. We (along with Klaus) see Rebekah's memories of 1919, where she worked as a nurse during the influenza epidemic, culminating in her betrayal. Celeste reveals her revenge plan which relies on a number of assumptions about the Mikalesons, but it remains to be seen how much of her fantasy will come true … Remember to rate, review, and share, brothers! On the final day of 2021 we wrap up the Alamo Bowl and a wild ride to the end of the season. Carey, Eddie and Josh are here as Josh recaps his visit to Orlando for the Under Armour All-American practices while Carey and Eddie breakdown the Alamo Bowl win over Oregon and hand out plenty of praise for Cale Gundy and Bob Stoops. Call this an exit interview, therapy, celebration, man crushing on Stoops, whatever you want it. It's probably more therapeutic for the guys just to talk about the madness of the last month. The good part was that it ended better than you could have scripted it, with Bob Stoops reminding us all what was special about Oklahoma. The hardest part about being an Entrepreneur is dealing with the constant battle between the work life and the home life balancing act. How do you put on a happy face for your clients when your health is in decline, or your heart is broken or there's some other family crisis? How do ensure client confidence when your head is in dark place? For me, the husband has to open up the office with a smile and the entrepreneur has to come home and leave the stress of the day at the office; the transitions can be tough, especially when home or health is in flux. We dive in.

This week on The Free Cheese, we become human. Celebrating its 20th anniversary in North America next week, we discuss our list of favorite 20 N64 games and some of the games that made the cut. Marc tells us about the time he tricked a child. We find out if Joe was right about the NX after last week's prediction, and why Marc and Kyle struggle to find enjoyment in thatgamecompany's Journey. We discuss the uniqueness of Journey and how it holds up after almost five years. Dragon Quest VII is out and so far we've delivered one sandwich. Shovel Knight is still a great game and Plague of Shadows is still a perfect expansion to the original title. Finally, Slain: Back from Hell is released on PS4 and we find out if it feels as great as it looks. Witness the return of Lightning Round as it leads us into our topic of the week, all about the ethics of VR development and what the future holds for our X-Files episode called "Life."
It's our one year anniversary! Woo. To make this episode extra special to us, we decided to watch the 1997 movie The Necro Files. Why is that special you ask? Our movie tonight was directed by Matt Jaissle, also the director of the first movie we covered Back From Hell (if you decide to listen be warned, it's rough)! We were lucky enough to interview Matt Jaissle about his work and you can find that episode here. Tom purchased this movie and waited for the right time to watch it and I think we found it.secondclasscinema.com@2ndClassPodcast
I know it's Kid's Movie Month and all here on Second Class Cinema but this opportunity was too good to pass up. We had Matt Jaissle, the director of Back From Hell, reach out to us wanting to talk about his movie! He had listened to our review of Back From Hell which was also our first episode (if you'd like to listen to it, enter at your own risk because it's a bit rough around the edges). Anyway, we had him give us a call and we chatted about his movie and his upcoming screening at The Alamo Drafthouse in Austin, TX (drafthouse.com/movies/back-from-hell/austin).We partnered with Tom's other podcast The Studio Cellar (www.thestudiocellar.com) to bring you this interview and discussion with Matt.ALSO you can finally find the Boston 48 Hour Film Project that Tom directed here: www.fatfootfilms.com/best-man-boston-48-hour-film-project
Forgive the sloppiness that is Episode 1 of Second Class Cinema! In this episode we review the 1993 gem Back From Hell.
