It's time to witness what you were previously denied as a reader. Jadzia Axelrod returns to the podcast, talking full spoilers about her new weekly DC Pride event series, Justice League: Dream Girls. Done in collaboration with co-writer Nicole Maines, illustrators Nicola Scott, J. Bone, Ted Brandt, Ro Stein, and a mess load of others, this series reunites superheroes Galaxy and Dreamer immediately after the harrowing events of Justice League Intergalactic. They awaken as princess and champion of the Amazons, rescuing someone who sure looks a lot like Steve Trevor before being propelled into a dramatically different, animated Gotham landscape. Reality and unreality blend together. This week's episode offers a perfect opportunity for reflection: Jadzia Axelrod contemplating the non-linear path that her precious character has taken from Galaxy: The Pretties Star to Hawkgirl to Galaxy: As the World Falls Down to Justice League: Dream Girls. We discuss why her Galaxy pairs so beautifully with Nicole Maines' Dreamer, the tricky oppositions these two characters faced after Justice League Intergalactic, and how their trip through iconic DC storylines in Dream Girls reveals the brilliance and joy readers were previously denied in their comics. Justice League: Dream Girls #1 is out now from DC Comics, with each issue in the four-issue event hitting every Wednesday in June. It's written by Jadzia Axelrod and Nicole Mains, illustrated by Nicola Scott, J. Bone, Ted Brandt, and Ro Stein, colored by Marissa Louise and Dearbhla Kelly, and lettered by Jodie Troutman and Frank Cvetkovic. To continue this conversation with Jadzia Axelrod, make sure you're following her Website and BlueSky. This Week's Sponsors This June, Top Shelf Productions is bringing you unforgettable stories from the deeply personal to the absolutely colossal. On June 2nd, discover We Are Pan, the powerful historical graphic novel from writer Andre Frattino and illustrator Yasmin Flores Montanez. Inspired by the true story of Operación Pedro Pan, the secret mission that evacuated over 14,000 Cuban children to the United States during Fidel Castro's rise to power. Then, on June 23rd, buckle up for Minnie Pouches in the MicroRealm! From Caleb Goellner and Eric Lide comes a wildly imaginative all-ages adventure about a super-anxious super-strong girl battling pizza dinosaurs, laser robots, and floating nightmares across bizarre dimensions to rescue her pets and save her family. The Future is Calling! 2000 AD is the Galaxy's Greatest Comic, with new issues published every single week! Phil Jiminez makes the artistic statement of his career to date with a visually arresting first issue that explores how and why the Greek goddesses (with the notable exception of Hera, Queen of the Olympians) come to create the Amazons, a race of women sworn to find and rescue women enslaved and mistreated by men. Will Zeus redress the wrongs done to women by men throughout history? (Don't hold your breath.) Will Hippolyta escape a band of brutish brigands determined to cut out her tongue? Note: This episode was recorded before the death of Gerry Conway, who wrote two of the stories we talk about. The Punisher is gearing up for a busy summer on the big and small screens (with Spider-Man: Brand New Day and The Punisher: One Last Kill, respectively). So what better time to dive into some key early stories charting the evolution of everyone's favorite gun-toting vigilante? We start with a look at the Punisher's pop-culture inspirations, including the Executioner and Dirty Harry, before discussing his first appearance in 1974's Amazing Spider-Man #129, where he joins forces with (wait, this can't be right, can it?) the Jackal to take down your friendly neighborhood wall-crawler! Then it's on to Marvel Preview #2 from that same year, in which we learn the tragic backstory behind his one-man war on crime! Finally, we jump ahead a few years to Daredevil #183-184 and a gritty, street-level take on the character that's closer to the version we're all familiar with. Is our (anti)hero just a poor judge of character? What type of story suits him best? And can our surly sentinel of the streets survive a frontal assault from that Whack Attack known as … The Comics Canon? In This Episode: What happened to Curt on our April 1 episode? In this candid second half of our talk, Greg Rucka opens up about why he walked away from DC Comics during earlier eras, and how those frustrations with co-writers and editors caused him to have serious personal issues and leave in digust to focus on creator owned projects. But it's not all doom and gloom — Greg is genuinely excited about his latest DC work, the upcoming Cheetah and Cheshire Rob the Justice League, with his usual collaborator Nicola Scott. Greg makes it clear how much better the current editorial regime feels, compared to the past.We also dive into Greg's prose side, where he's just finished a brand-new Atticus Kodiak novel ready to hit publishers, and he teases the possibility of new Queen & Country stories on the horizon. He addresses the current state of the book market. On top of that,Greg shares fresh updates on Lazarus, his long-running Image Comics series with Michael Lark, and reflects on how that world continues to devolve. It's a mix of hard truths, exciting projects, and the kind of thoughtful perspective you only get from a creator like Greg Rucka and a show like Word Balloon

I think Organ Meats is my favorite, but you really can't go wrong. Also, she has a very informative website where you can follow her work. K-Ming has brought us Wonder Woman Historia, a conversation foreshadowed in her previous appearance on the show discussing Fruits Basket in Episode 4. I love this comic! It's written by Kelly Sue DeConnick with lettering by Clayton Cowles, and art by Phil Jimenez, Gene Ha, and Nicola Scott, and colors by Hi-Fi, Arif Prianto, Romulo Fajardo Jr., Wesley Wong, and Annette Kwok. This podcast is recorded in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. It is edited by Sara Century. The theme music is provided by Earth Control Pill, whose work is on Bandcamp. Here's the run down – MultiVersus: Collision Detected #3 – “Rated by Dash” – 4/5. This issue is just crazy but it is good and I love the pictures. Jenny Sparks #3 – 4/10 – Evil Captain Atom kills the enti8re Justice League team. But also didn't. Or maybe he did? And Jenny smokes. Such. Great. Writing. All points given for the art. Batman: Full Moon #1 – 7.5/10 – An interesting story. Batman's no stranger to horror stories, but this one feels written a little different. I enjoy it, and Subic's art. However, Subic… stop signing interior pages. You look incredibly full of yourself when you do that. It's in the credits. That's the only place it needs to be. Dark Knights of Steel: Allwinter #4 – 8/10 – I really hope that DKOS continues after this, like a White Knight kind of universe. Please. So fun to read, such great stories. Such good art. Batman and Robin: Year One #1 – 8.25/10 – This is a great year one story without it being an origin story. It's not campy or with cheesy dialog. I's written well; the art works awesome. It's a great time. The Strange Case of Harleen and Harley – 9/10 – This was awesome. Really. Like an origin story for the development of the Harley Quinn side of Harleen Quinzel. And Poison Ivy. It was done really well and the art works great for it too. It's not a kid's book, unless kids should read the F bomb, which does show up once along with some other profanity later in the book. So… if this was a movie, it would be rated PG 13. This Is Our Land – A Blue Beetle Story – 9.5/10 – A VERY rare 9.5 from me because of how absolutely amazing this book is. There's really not another way to describe it. It's relevant, has real meaning, is impactful and it gives a cool bit of an origin story. And it's written so damn well that I couldn't peel my eyes off of it, and may even go back and read it again. Unbelievably good. I couldn't recommend it more. Harley Quinn in Paradise #1 – 7.75/10 - It's a silly webcomic about Harley shortly after breaking up with the Joker. She's pissed off a lot of criminals and Poison Ivy warns her to hide… so her idea to make everyone love her while staying safe is … get cast on a reality show looking for true love. Ooohhhh boy. This should be something. The art is good, and I like Harley's new look at the end of the issue. Nothing Butt Nightwing #1 – 7/10 – A webcomic about Nightwing going undercover as a model while dealing with… being dumped by Babs. For a webcomic, this was actually not too bad. I've seen far worse. It was enjoyable for what it was… but… if an issue is centered around Dick Grayson's butt, only Nicola Scott should be asked to draw it. Art wasn't bad though. #ActionComics #WorldsFinest #Catwoman #GreenLantern #WonderWoman #Titans #Nightwing #DCAllIn #AllIn #Absolute #ComicsAreForEveryone #ComicsAreGreat #MakeComicsGreatAgain #AbsolutePower #DCComics #comics #comicbooks #TheGeekMatrix #TGM #TheGeekMatrixPod --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thegeekmatrixcomics/support

When it comes to origins in comics it can be difficult to break new ground. However, Kelly Sue DeConnick found a way to bring a new vision to life for the world of Wonder Women. Wonder Women Historia explains how the Amazons were created, how Hippolyta: Diana's mother rose to power and the founding of island of Themyscira. DeConnick also teams up with 3 artists that bring her unique vision to each issue of this graphic novel featuring Phil Jimenez, Gene Ha, and Nicola Scott. This was also published from DC Comics: Black Label line. From the robust mythology of the Greek Gods to Hippolyta fighting of behalf of herself and her tribe of Amazons this epic story stands up shares the struggles of how they fought for their survival and justice for their people. We recommend this story for fans of Wonder Women, Greek Mythology and imaginative art styles that shows this larger than life world.
