The English title of this book is To Your Eternity, but in Japanese it's called 不滅のあなたへ (Fumetsu no Anata e). Whatever you like to call it, Yoshitoki Oima's second hit series isn't quite like anything else, in any medium. The elevator pitch is impossible. Child meets immortal thing in the forest. Alien thing becomes all different stuff, including a wolf, and meets a boy. Is this a story about people trying to go ice fishing, who then get lost? In some ways, it is that. In many ways, it isn't.Even just the first chapter of volume one is a heart-breaking, self-contained story. From there, typical shonen storytelling tropes are subverted because the extraterrestrial shapeshifting protagonist is constantly in the process of learning, in real time, how to become a convincing facsimile of a person. Meanwhile, a human sacrifice must be made to a gigantic bear god, in the forest. Look, there's a lot going on here. It's a heck of a way to start a series, is what we're saying.Get in touch with us!Email: mangaroospodcast@gmail.comEverywhere else: @mangaroos
The Master of Mediocrity and Lt of Literature discuss A Silent Voice from Yoshitoki Oima, with the English translation being originally released by Crunchyroll Manga and a film was adapted by Kyoto Animation. A Silent Voice is a coming-of-age, redemption, and psychological drama film that discusses bullying, disability, mental health, redemption, relationships, and recovery. Shoya Ishida, former bully, seeks forgiveness from Shoko Nishimiya, a young, deaf woman that he tormented when they briefly shared a classroom in elementary school. Shoya wants to redeem himself before he takes his life into his own hands, but ends up attempting to befirend Shoko instead. As they reconnect with prior classmates, secrets are revealed, forgiveness is sought, and characters attempt to take the final steps to take their lives. Episode was edited by Mitch.
We can't stay silent any longer! We're screaming out our love for A Silent Voice all the way to the moon! Special guests and big friends Vix, Marco Oliveros, and Kory Cerjack join us for a special retrospective of Yoshitoki Oima's heart-wrenching and heartfelt coming of age story! Vix and Marco share their perspectives as teachers based in Japan to discuss how accurately the series depicts bullying culture in Japanese classrooms and the systemic issues that perpetuate it. Vix and Kory also share insights into the challenges faced by students with disabilities, and how ill-equipped a lot of teachers and public schools are to accommodate them. Plus, Kory and Colton reflect on revisiting the series after previously podcasting about it five years ago, and how their thoughts on it have changed or matured since then. We also dig into the series' themes of growth and change, how well it depicts depression and disabilities, and our complicated thoughts on these complicated characters! There's a lot to explore, so take our metaphorical hand as we guide you through this door, rediscovering what this series has to offer and so much more! 001: A Silent Voice vol. 1 A suicidal schoolboy seeks forgiveness from the deaf girl he bullied. Skip synopsis to the mash and potatos @ 10.24 Theme Music: 'Electro Hype' by Liam Bradbury Podcast created by Jim Fitton and Steven Gorton Published by Kodansha. The poignant ‘A Silent Voice’ has been adapted into an animated movie in 2016 and is currently available on Netflix as of 2019. Its author, Yoshitoki Oima has been nominated for awards, including the 2016 Eisner Award and the 19th Tezuka Award. https://natalie.mu/comic/news/139236 The movie itself has received critical success; it has achieved a 94% fresh approval on the Rotten Tomatoes website. You can watch Chris Stuckmann’s review of it on Youtube. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xnm3Q-b6Xyw It’s one of few manga that includes a deaf/hard of hearing character with characters using sign language. Because of this we hope, once funding is adequate, to get our podcasts transcribed in the future. So please subscribe and support the podcast if you wish to make that a reality. The Manga is available on Comixology. https://www.comixology.com/A-Silent-Voice-Vol-1/digital-comic/271628 The story is about a young schoolboy, Shoya, who experiences guilt after he torments a deaf schoolgirl, Shoko Nishimiya. His first taste of becoming a lonely pariah causes him to stress about the future and now he seeks forgiveness from the same girl he tormented. Thematically, the manga tackles the subjects of alienation, miscommunication and bullying. Why do people bully? And more importantly what are the consequences of being bullied? James believes it’s a repulsion to a desperation, an overwhelming need to seek companionship and approval that we tend to admonish. Other times it a hierarchy, an exercise of dominance. Steven believes it can stem from fear. We tend to bully those who we do not understand, and we fear what we don’t understand. James also talks about what it means to be both a twin and to also be bullied. We’ll be continuing to read and talk about all 7 of the volumes in the following weeks. For those who don’t understand the “Hoichi the earless” reference. (The nickname given to Shoko Nishimiya) Here’s a video that better explains it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MDX6urz-h08 Also, hair loss has been linked to stress, don’t be like Shoya, take it easy and unwind, at least once a day. **Not By The Hair On My CG Lip** Andrew and Mick trade back their new model Rob for the older, more comfortable version this week. The news is cause for some head-scratching as DC's decide to do a JLA/Doom Patrol crossover with the rather odd title of Milk Wars. Meanwhile, Jude Law may take on the role of Marvel's original Captain Marvel (i.e. the Kree warrior Mar-Vell), Marvel wonder where Wolverine is, and the cast of the Justice league cartoon want to do a reunion movie - which neatly leads us on to a good old natter about the new live-action film from Warner Bros. Our featured comics and manga are Frau Faust volume 2 by Kore Yamazaki, I Love This Part by Tillie Walden, Helvetica Standard: Bold by Keiichi Arawi, Serenity: Better Days, Star Wars: The Screaming Citadel, and To Your Eternity (Fumetsu no Anata e) volume 1 by Yoshitoki Oima. Oh my god, they've killed Colton! Those b@st@rds! Wait...WhatwhatWHAT? Relax, guy. I'm not being seriously. He's fine. He dies in every episode! Inside. Because editing so many podcasts makes him want to suck Chef's chocolate salty balls. Last week he went insane and said "screw you guys, I'm going home." Last I heard he went off to hunt for ManBearPig with Al Gore in a quiet pissant mountain town. Don't know where he is now, but he's probably fighting the frizzies, at eleven. They mostly come out at night. Mostly. Me? I'm super! Thanks for asking. But with Colton MIA I had to get someone to sub for him. So I some calls and got Rod Stewart to play a gig at New Year's in Las Vegas...but it turns out he doesn't read manga, so he wouldn't come on the podcast. So, I just got my brother Varun aka VlordGTZ to come on instead! And if you don't like it, well...you go to hell! You go to hell and you die! Or blame Canada. Their cartoons destroyed Colton's fragile little mind Plus, they bombed the Baldwins. Those uncle farting savages. Well, you gotta do what you gotta do. As long as what you're doing is cool and popular with everyone. This week we go over a couple of lists that highlight some anime adaptions and Shonen Jump heroines that are about as popular as Scott Malcomson. Plus we run down some other hella kewl news including Spice & Wolf author Isuna Hasekura coming to New York Comic Con, Active Gaming Media's Tezuka-inspired digital card game, and the upcoming Manga Translation Battle Contest! This month Shea and Derek look at two tonally different works of manga. They begin with Yoshitoki Oima's series, A Silent Voice, the final (seventh) volume of which was released from Kodansha Comics at the end of May. It's the story of an elementary school bully, Shoya Ishida, and his attempts to atone for his past behavior after he enters high school. The object of his ridicule was Shoko Nishimiya, a deaf transfer student who was pulled out of her elementary school because of Shoya's insensitive mocking. Now teenagers, Shoyo and Shoko establish a relationship that is spottily therapeutic for both, and with the help of their former elementary school classmates with whom they reestablish contact. While the guys both enjoy this title, there are times when the narrative is worn a little thin. Derek feels that there is excessive emotional wallowing in places, and Shea is not thrilled with the series' quick ending. A completely different kind of manga is Rokudenashiko's What Is Obscenity?: The Story of a Good for Nothing Artist and Her Pussy (Koyama Press). And the book's subtitle says it all. Rokudenashiko -- a pen name for Megumi Igarashi, and which translates into "good-for-nothing woman" -- tells the story of her evolution as an artist, her work in manko (vagina) art (or "deco-man," as she calls it), and her two 2014 arrests for violating various obscenity laws in Japan. The core of the text is its manga, three separate stories that were originally serialized in the leftist political magazine, Weekly Friday. But about a third of the book is composed of photographs and text-only supplemental material, making this more of a hybrid chronicle of Rokudenashiko's art and legal ordeals. Both Shea and Derek love this book, filled with humor and keen observations on Japan's archaic, paternalistically mandated obscenity laws. In fact, they each want to get a little Manko-chan figurine for themselves!
