Tigers Win: Sian Hudson, LSU Soccer Head Coach

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 16, 2021 67:04

Hey, Hey Fightin' Podcast listeners. Bringing your attention to another LSU Sports podcast, Tigers Win, which launches Season 2 today with LSU Soccer head coach Sian Hudson. Tigers Win is where we talk to LSU's athletes, former athletes, coaches, staffers, and others about winning, excellence, and championship habits, and you can subscribe on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or anywhere you find podcasts. Back Sunday with a Hurry Up. Our first guest on season 2 of Tigers Win is LSU Soccer head coach Sian Hudson. In just her second season, Coach Hudson has led the Tigers to a 7-0 start, a No. 6 national ranking, and a school record 10 consecutive victories dating back to the spring. The key to success? Belief. Belief brought her to LSU. Belief carried the team through a eight-game winless streak to start her time in Baton Rouge. Belief kept them bought into a new system of fluid possession when things didn't click at first. And belief has them playing better soccer than just about anybody in the country. We spoke on Tuesday, September 14 ahead of a Friday, September 17 matchup with Mississippi State to start SEC play. After that conversation, you'll hear the outro music, followed by our conversation from September of 2020, when the Tigers were set to start a COVID-delayed SEC-only fall schedule. I added it as a bonus segment because we referenced it so often in this episode, and because it gives great perspective on how Coach Hudson's vision has turned into reality. Show Notes: Show Notes: (0:00) - Intro (3:32) - Welcome (5:04) - Selling the Vision (6:27) - Building a Website (11:27) - Goal Setting (13:12) - Belief and Chemistry (16:13) - Turning Point (19:34) - Springboard (22:39) - Training Sessions (24:42) - Goal Scoring (26:24) - Identity (28:29) - Preparation (31:21) - Tactics (33:25) - Standards (35:10) - Aesthetics (37:31) - Revenge About Tigers Win: Tigers Win is a podcast about excellence. Each episode, we'll pick the brains of LSU coaches, student athletes, staff members, or alumni about the routines, habits, tools, mindsets, and attributes they've utilized to excel in their crafts. Hundreds of champions walk the stately oaks and broad magnolias of the Ole War Skule every year. This is your chance to get inside the mind of world class performers, learn what makes them elite, and how you can apply their lessons to your life and develop your own winning mentality. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/heyfightinpodcast/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/heyfightinpodcast/support

Overall, we rate the Tigers' trip to Hollywood a box office disappointment. Two thumbs down, would not recommend. There's some attempt to set aside emotion and look for logical explanations, but much like the Tigers in the Rose Bowl, we weren't always successful. Still, we look at what went wrong – struggles in the running game, issues against Cover 0, and defensive breakdowns and miscues – and look for ways the ship can be righted in the weeks ahead. Another two-parter, with the fastest man in the #NFLSU Draft class...and Zach Von Rosenberg. Kary Vincent Jr. was born a sprinter. Speed is his trademark, whether he's on the football field or the track. But during his journey from LSU to the NFL, KJV has proved he's a fighter, too. On today's Hey Fightin' Podcast, Vincent Jr. talks the heights -- winning the 2019 national championship -- as well as the depths -- losing his father just before the 2019 Fiesta Bowl -- of his time in Baton Rouge. He also discusses the difficulty of stepping away from football for a year, what he learned through the opt-out process, and how hungry he is to get back on the field. Watch Kary's interview here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wH8opUpQD5M Zach Von Rosenberg knows the road to the pros better than anyone else in this year's #NFLSU draft class. That's because he's traveled it before. The former MLB Draft pick is now going through the process again, this time for the NFL. He reflects on the similarities, the differences, his favorite moments as a Tiger, and how long he can kick at the next level. A special two-interview episode. To watch on YouTube, click here. Part 1: Jabril Cox has nothing left to prove. In three seasons at the FCS level with North Dakota State, he was a three-time national champion, a First-Team All-American, and an unstoppable force on defense. In his lone season at LSU, his talent spoke for itself, whether he was stuffing running backs, covering tight ends, or picking off quarterbacks. Cox joined Hey Fightin' Podcast to talk about his journey from frigid Fargo to balmy Baton Rouge and on to the NFL. Part 2: Tyler Shelvin anchored LSU's defensive line in its run to the 2019 national championship. After opting out of the 2020 season due to COVID-19, Shelvin is captivating the imaginations of NFL Draft scouts with his size, power, and production. Shelvin talks about his path to the Draft on this episode of Hey Fightin' Podcast. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/heyfightinpodcast/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/heyfightinpodcast/support

We kick off Season 3 of Hey Fightin' Podcast with the legendary No. 3 himself. Kevin Faulk parlayed an All-American, record-setting career at LSU into a 13-year NFL career with the New England Patriots, where he played in five Super Bowls and won three. We sat down with Faulk ahead of a Super Bowl which will feature six former Tigers and a quarterback Faulk knows better than most. After that conversation, we revisit a 2019 chat with Justin Jefferson, who is up for Rookie of the Year honors this weekend. It's a refreshing look back to a time when Jefferson was on the verge of a breakout few have ever matched -- from a two-star who some thought was a walk-on to a national champion and record-setting NFL rookie. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/heyfightinpodcast/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/heyfightinpodcast/support

A different flavor this week for The Hurry Up. I hopped on Zoom right after the game and took questions to break down LSU's 37-34 win over Florida. The result was a less analytical approach to the game and a more emotional, raw conversation about joy and fandom and grit and culture. But we did talk Cade York's 57-yard game-winner, Max Johnson's moxie, the freshmen playing like vets, and, yes, The Shoe. With guest appearances from the Away Game Press Box, Andrew Lopez of ESPN.com, Van Lathan of The Ringer, and, best of all, some loyal listeners. This is an emotional episode. It's a funny episode. It's timely -- the two just combined for 223 yards and two scores against South Carolina. It's evergreen, too -- they go deep on their stories, their families, their bond. I walked away from this conversation amazed by their resilience, grateful for their vulnerability, and inspired by their friendship. I hope you feel the same way by the time it's done. The veterans rising to the occasion. This team has a lot of work to do and bigger games ahead, but that -- that was just good times. This is one of my favorite Hurry Ups, and not just because the game was so interesting and gave us so much to talk about. First, Hester joins for a break down.
