Growing evidence links heavy social‑media use to rising anxiety, bullying, and sextortion among kids, and state lawmakers are racing to respond. In this interview, Harvard Law School's Leah Plunkett—reporter for the Uniform Law Commission's child‑influencer act—and University of Virginia family‑law scholar Naomi Cahn examine how new statutes seek to verify age, require parental consent, and redesign feeds to curb addictive features.Plunkett and Cahn compare Florida's and Utah's sweeping under‑14 account bans with New York's pending “SAFE for Kids Act,” explore design mandates such as late‑night notification curfews, and explain why long‑standing COPPA rules leave teens largely unprotected. They unpack First Amendment and privacy challenges already moving through the courts, highlight emerging “digital Coogan” laws that safeguard child‑creator earnings, and note international moves—from Australia's proposed under‑16 ban to the U.K.'s Age‑Appropriate Design Code.(Credits: General 1.5 hrs | MCLE available to TalksOnLaw “Premium” or “Podcast” members. Welcome back to Pizza Quest! NYC is a treacherous place to open a new pizzeria.  The competition is fierce and public is vocal and not always diplomatic. But the lure of reaching for holy grail of pizza is hard to resist, and now Chef Ian Coogan, formerly of Eleven Madison Park and the Jean George lineage of great chefs (among other top-tier mentors), and currently the culinary director at the popular Motel Morris in Chelsea, has taken the plunge a few blocks away with the opening of KID.  To assure success, Ian brought in Roberta's and Tartine alumnus, Max Blachman-Gentile to nail down the dough and the fermentation game plan. In this episode we are graced by having them both here to share with us the rest of the story, including their creative process that resulted in a highly inventive yet relatable menu and whimsical ambience. They also share the how-to of training their team to deliver the KID experience on the highest level on a daily basis. It's all here on this week's episode of Pizza Quest!

April 18, 2025. NEW YORK - Peter Walsh passed away today at 1pm Eastern time. He was a saloon keeper, a musician, a poet, an entrepreneur, an employer, a father, a husband and a friend. But mostly, he was joy wrapped up in a human-shaped package. He was known to us as a track fan and one of the owners of Coogan's Bar just up the street from The Armory. Here, we post the interview we did with him in 2020 just after Coogan's closed for good, an unfortunate victim of the COVID pandemic. Today we bid Peter a fond and tearful farewell and say we'll look forward to meeting him again on the other side of the track. ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★

Earlier this week I shared a conversation with New Balance Boston Coach Mark Coogan. He is truly one of distance running's great sages. His team includes current lions of our sport like Elle St. Pierre, Heather MacLean, and recent addition Parker Valby. Mark shares tales from New England's rich running tradition and his own elite career on the track, grass, and roads. We also unpack specific workouts that have yielded his athletes Olympic appearances and World Championships medals. But more importantly, we hear about his overarching training principles, which, I believe, can help guide all of us to greater success and joy in our running.

Sometimes we accidentally stumble into a theme at Spoilerpiece, and this week's theme is movies that make us dissolve into choking sobs. First, Megan and Dave weigh in on THE PENGUIN LESSONS, a movie that should be slight; a high school English teacher in politically fraught 1972 Argentina (Steve Coogan) rescues a pengiun and then everyone learns something. Megan and Dave agree: This movie should not work. It should be treacly and stupid...but it made us weep. Legit tears, not tears cheaply jerked from us. Kudos to Coogan for navigating the screenplay's potential pitfalls - he is excellent - and director Peter Cattaneo for laying off the sentiment. Next, Evan joins Megan and Dave to dicuss BOB TREVINO LIKES IT, featuring superb turns by Barbie Ferreira and John Leguizmo as two lonely people who strike up an unlikely and deep friendship that helps shepherd them through emotional trauma. This movie made us sob real tears. (Again, not jerked, but earned.) And then over on Patreon our Women's History Month poll winner is the disaster that is ANGIE, directed by Martha Coolidge and starring Geena Davis; this movie is head-scratchingly bad.

note from the archivist: Jimmy did not write episode notes for the remaining episodes. However, an explanation is required. umgelenkt. Jimmy wrote these episodes, recorded them, and then began writing a book on WerBell. He wrote expanded the podcast manuscript into a book (and fixed some errors) but was required to stop writing for personal reasons. Jimmy did not stop due to what he found. incredibly hard artwork by Robert Voyvodic (@rvoy__) Additional note: Jimmy was able to confirm that Mitchell Livingstone WerBell III was not Russian or Scottish but in fact Jewish on both paternal and maternal sides. This was confirmed in the 1920 census which listed their mother tongue as Hebrew and his parents coming from Poland/Romania/Russia. The 1930 census listed his parents' origins as Odessa, Russia. Further, WerBell's grandparents were listed as speaking "Russian Yiddish" in the 1910 census, and were buried in Har Nebo Jewish cemetery in Philadelphia. There is no doubt that Mitch WerBell III was Jewish. The implications are truly staggering. WerBell portrayed himself as Russian and Scottish, never Jewish, and in fact his family pretended to be Russian nobility. The whole white Russian thing. Kevin Coogan's books on Goleniewski, Yockey, and National Bolshevism are the keys to understanding this bizarre milieu of crypto-Jewish fascists. It also borders into the exact same territory as the fictional chivalric orders of the SoSJ and SoM that Coogan and Steven Snider have been studying. There was never any clear indication whether WerBell (or his sons) even knew he was Jewish, although it is unlikely that he was completely ignorant given his connections to Rich's Department store, advertising, his time in China, and the Israelis generally. Jimmy never found any indication that WerBell was antisemitic although he was constantly interacting with extreme far-right actors who were. It raises new questions about some of his interactions with Israeli military officials (episode 11), as well as the nature of his interactions with these extreme far-right groups. The fact that WerBell was Jewish raises many more questions than answers, and the question was never fully resolved before Jimmy discontinued his project. This was only one of several bizarre revelations between Jimmy writing the podcast and writing the book. Songs: Little Lord Fauntleroy by Upper Crust

The Top 100 Project

Charlie Chaplin's The Kid represents the 3rd-oldest movie we've ever reviewed, but it continues to be an accessible story 104 years later. Chaplin adopts Jackie Coogan and they live a life of squalor---and also chicanery---but they ARE happy together. There's genuine affection between these two actors. Coogan's performance was a landmark for child actors while Chaplin was, as always, a comic virtuoso. He's responsible for 6 jobs in one movie, which was typical for him. The biggest bugaboo is that Chaplin's film is more touching than it is funny. Just look at that kid plead for his "dad"! So ran the Radio Times listing that week for the show we are discussing, which has nothing whatsoever to do with the International Christmas Pudding but has everything to do with selling snow to Sudan. An important verb in Gal. 5:2 could be either passive voice or middle voice. It is translated, “if you accept circumcision” (ESV) or “if ye be circumcised” (KJV) or “if you have yourselves circumcised” (NAB). Verse 4 is sometimes translated, “You are severed from Christ” (ESV) or “You . . . have been alienated from Christ” (NIV). Consideration of the Greek wording is critical for our understanding. Comment la loi Coogan protège-t-elle les enfants stars ?

Choses à Savoir

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 25, 2024 2:11

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 24, 2024 2:00

The film focuses on details of the comedy duo's personal relationship while relating how they embarked on a gruelling music hall tour of the United Kingdom and Ireland during 1953 and struggled to get another film made. The film premiered on 21 October 2018 at the closing night gala of the BFI London Film Festival. The trio then delves into a critical topic for child actors: Coogan accounts. These accounts are designed to protect the earnings of young performers from misuse by their parents. Tamara shares her belief in karma, encapsulating her philosophy with the phrase, “what goes around comes around.” This segues into a lighter segment with inquiries about Tamara's thoughts on Courtney Stodden allegedly flushing a 5-carat diamond ring down the toilet.  The conversation takes an intriguing turn as Tamara reflects on being compared to Miley Cyrus. She recounts how some people believe she resembles Miley and discusses the possibility of playing Miley's mother in a film. This opens a broader discussion about the intricacies of working in Hollywood, the pressures of public scrutiny, and the emotional toll of personal relationships in the limelight. The episode then transitions into the “Runway Rundown” segment, where Patrik and Pol' critique various red carpet looks. They provide insightful and entertaining commentary on celebrity fashion, including Tamara's own red-carpet appearances. Their playful banter and expert opinions offer a blend of humor and industry knowledge, making for a captivating time. Tamara shares an intimate part of her life by discussing her past relationship with performer Weird Al Yankovic. She reveals her appreciation for humor and funny people, adding her personal touch to the episode. The conversation shifts as Patrik and Tamara discuss her Emmy nomination and the intricacies of choosing the perfect dress for the red carpet. Pol' offers valuable fashion advice, emphasizing the importance of confidence and how trends in red carpet attire have evolved. The episode reaches an emotional climax with a poignant coffee reading by Pol'. He provides deep insights into Tamara's past and present, encouraging her to release old burdens and embrace new beginnings. The development of Christian scriptures did not terminate once, for example, following Irenaeus and other influential patristic figures, the four gospels that would later be located at the front of the church's New Testament were accepted by most churches and transmitted together in the same codex. Instead, erudite Christian readers employed new and innovative technologies to transform reading practices, calling attention to both narrative and other thematic similarities present across the gospels, and enabling cross-referential access from one gospel's narrative sequence to another without amending the individual texts themselves. Such practices were facilitated by the sections and canon tables of Eusebius (ca. 260–339 CE), bishop of Caesarea Maritima in Roman Palestine. In Eusebius the Evangelist: Rewriting the Fourfold Gospel in Late Antiquity (Oxford University Press, 2023), Jeremiah Coogan discusses the editorial intervention of Eusebius within gospel manuscripts, including paratextual sectioning, tables of contents, and other prefatory material, at both a technical and conceptual level, locating the overall apparatus of this “evangelist” alongside broader late ancient transformations in reading and knowledge. Dr. Coogan joined the New Books Network to discuss examples of gospel reading that Eusebius permitted via his novel contributions to the gospels, related book technologies in his contemporary readerly environment, and the overall success of Eusebius's sections and canons during the millennium that followed him—starting with Greek and Latin gospel manuscripts of late antiquity but also appearing alongside most biblical translations into the late Middle Ages, when modern chapter divisions and versification began to assume the dominant roles for sectioning texts that they have maintained into the present day. Jeremiah Coogan (Ph.D., University of Notre Dame, 2020) is Assistant Professor of New Testament at Santa Clara University's Jesuit School of Theology in Berkeley. His research and teaching interests span the New Testament, early Christianity, and ancient Judaism, with a particular focus on Gospels and on the social history of early Christianity. His scholarship has been published in Early Christianity, the Journal of Early Christian Studies, the Journal of Late Antiquity, the Journal of Theological Studies, and in several other journals and edited volumes, and he is currently working on a new project that investigates how early Christians deployed literary and bibliographic categories to understand similarities and differences between Gospel texts. “Occasionally we do a really hard workout, but most of the time we just try to stay even-keeled. Two months of consistent training is better than three weeks with two hard workouts but then you're taking a week off because you're dinged up or sore… We really thought, let's run the 5K pretty hard, I don't necessarily know if [Elle St. Pierre] ran all-out when she ran 14:32, but we wanted to see what it felt like to run a hard 1500 a week later, because [Prefontaine Classic] was going to be hard.” Team New Balance Boston coach Mark Coogan joins the show after a strong first day of competition for his team. Mark shares about what training has looked like for the team heading into the Trials and what we can expect from his stars in the coming days. The Theater Project Thinks About...

Mary Iannelli sits down with Emma Green, Head of Emma Green Casting, to discuss the role of a casting director and what up and coming actors should know about the casting process.Credits:Audio Engineer Gary GlorOne Heartbeat Away is provided to The Theater Project by Gail Lou and Damian DeSandiesReferences:Emma Green Bio:  Emma Green is a seasoned Casting Director and Development Producer. Originally from Australia, Emma forged her way into the world of Casting and Producing from humble beginnings as an eager intern with companies such as Maura Fay/Tom McSweeney (AUST) and Cast Iron Productions (USA). She has a keen eye for talent and a relentless willingness to find the right person for every role no matter how big or small. This has helped her climb the ranks from Associate to Coordinator to Producer and Director in a relatively short amount of time. She worked for several years with Fremantle Media USA- focusing on development casting needs as well as several seasons on the hit NBC show- America's Got Talent. From there Emma branched out as a Development & Casting Producer for TV and was appointed Manager for US Factual Development at Temple Street Productions, the company best known for Orphan Black, Killjoys & Million Dollar Critic. Now she is at the helm of Emma Green Casting; a boutique company that provides casting services for US and International Productions, with a specialization in foreign castings and talent for TV, Film, Commercial and New Media projects. If your audition leads to a role, depending on the type of role/production, you could be on set literally the next day, and production will expect you to have the paperwork in order. No Coogan Account, no work. This applies not only to film and TV, but also to commercials, modeling, voiceover work, etc. New York, Louisiana, and New Mexico have similar laws. The intention of the Coogan law is that a minimum of 15% of each dollar a young actor makes goes into an account that is untouchable until they turn 18. It is named after Jackie Coogan, the child star from the 1930s whose fortune was squandered by his parents

"When Elle races in a championship, I always say, ‘You want to be in the race with 400m to go for a shot at making the team or winning. Just give yourself a shot.' Because you can't control what other people are doing and you don't know how the chips are going to fall. I was really confident she was going to be there with 400m to go. I was just watching her closely. I watched her chop her steps a couple of times and was thinking, ‘Gosh. She's just chomping at the bit.' I didn't know she was going to beat (Gudaf) Tsegay because she's run 14:00. But, (Elle's) an animal." This is an episode of Office Hours with Kyle Merber and Mac Fleet kicking back and chatting with coach Mark Coogan of Team New Balance Boston. We had a chance to just catch up with him at The TRACK at New Balance on our recent visit to Boston for New Balance Nationals and the NCAA Indoor Championships. At this year's World Indoor Championships, he was trackside to watch Elle St. Pierre win gold in the 3000m and Emily Mackay take bronze in the 1500m. He takes pride in the fact that he's been able to help develop their talent coming out of the America East conference. He discusses what he looks for in athletes, how he carefully approaches their training intensity and how his philosophy has changed or not really with all of these modern advances.
