As one of the largest states in the country, California has a profound Native American heritage that spans the entire length of this 760 mile-long state. Home to over 100 tribes, California's tribal heritage runs deep and although tourism often overlooks indigenous experiences and activities, it's time that more travelers dedicated a portion of their trips to experience them.Whether you're drawn to immersive museums like the Autry Museum of the American West, which pays tribute to the contributions of Native American tribes, or you're eager to visit sacred sites and historical locations like Chumash Painted Cave State Historic Park, the state provides an abundance of opportunities for cultural enrichment.Satisfy your palate with indigenous cuisine at restaurants like Wahpepah's Kitchen or Café Ohlone, and savor indigenous-inspired libations at breweries such as Mad River Brewing or wineries like Camins 2 Dreams. For those seeking active and educational adventures, consider jet boat tours along the Klamath River or immerse yourself in the vibrant ambiance of a Pow Wow, where the traditions, music, and dances of Native American communities come to life.Furthermore, annual events like the California Indian Basketweavers' Association gathering and the Indigenous People's Day Sunrise Gathering on Alcatraz Island provide unique insights into the cultural significance of these traditions and the contemporary challenges faced by Native American communities. From Pow Wows to delicious, indigenous-owned restaurants, museums, and even breweries, here are some of the best cultural experiences to have in California.

California is home to 6,500 native plant species, including some that are truly iconic, like coast redwoods, giant sequoias, bristlecone pines, and California poppies. If you're like me, you have a lot of questions about this wide variety of plants, like: What is it that makes native plants so important? What's the difference between a native plant and an endemic one? Why are some plants more beneficial for wildlife than others? How many rare plants do we have in California? What's important to know about gardening with natives? How can we each help increase biodiversity in our own neighborhoods and beyond? In this episode, join me and botanist Naomi Fraga from the California Botanic Garden as we discuss native plants, Global Biodiversity Hotspots, why some parts of the Mojave Desert are so wet, how to survive fieldwork in Death Valley, the swampy past of Los Angeles, and what each of us can do to ensure that the botanical richness of our state continues for generations to come. Nan Sterman is a California native, garden expert, garden designer, author, botanist, and award-winning communicator. Nan has long been dedicated to the transformation of planted landscapes from overly thirsty and resource-intensive to climate appropriate and sustainable. In addition to designing gardens, Nan works hard to connect plants to people and the planet. Some examples of that work include: · Her award-winning public TV show, A Growing Passion which Nan hosts, produces, and writes. Forty-eight episodes air on KPBS TV in San Diego, on CREATE TV, and are available online at www.AGrowingPassion.com. · Nan's most recent book, Hot Color, Dry Garden, is a guide for creating color-filled, waterwise gardens. She's written hundreds of articles for newspapers and magazines, too. · In 2014, Nan founded the San Diego Gardener Facebook group, where more than 16,000 people discuss plants and gardening in Southern California. · At the beginning of the COVID quarantine, Nan co-founded Grab & Grow Gardens to support food-insecure communities during the COVID-19 crisis and beyond. To date, Grab & Grow Gardens has supplied more than 26,000 starter vegetable gardens for families and seniors in need across the region. · Nan leads tours to garden adventures around the world, including Europe, South Africa, Costa Rica, and the US. · In 2022, Nan kicked off the online Garden School, targeted at passionate home gardeners. In addition to a monthly garden membership, Nan teaches online and in-person seed-starting workshops every spring. Nan's approach to gardening dates back to the 1970s when she was involved in the first wave of the sustainability movement. She trained at the Integral Urban House in Berkeley, California, earned a botany degree from Duke University, a master's in biology from UC Santa Barbara, and a master's in instructional design from San Diego State University. Prior to delving into the gardening world, Nan created curricula, training programs, and educational materials for Fortune 500 companies, zoos, aquaria, and not-for-profit organizations. Her ability to take complex information and create effective educational programs is one of her greatest strengths, and a major source of her successes. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/plantatrilliontrees/support
“Whenever I take people in there, I say—and it's not a very large room—I say, ‘You're now in the presence of millions and millions and millions of living beings. Fortunately, most of them are very small, and most of them are very dormant.'” In the late 1920s, Susanna Bixby Bryant founded a garden devoted to preserving the diverse native plants of California. Well ahead of her time and against the advice of experts, she crafted a garden showcasing plants from across the state. Today, the California Botanic Garden, formerly known as the Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden[KK1] , is an 86-acre park in Claremont that highlights the climate zones and plant families of California. The garden is home to rare plants, a seed bank, and an herbarium (a research collection of plant specimens), which allow it to play a key role in preserving California native species as they face increased pressure due to climate change and habitat loss. In this episode, host Brian Houck walks through the California Botanic Garden with Lucinda McDade, its executive director. They discuss the garden's history, their favorite native plants, and some tips for growing them in your own garden. In this episode of Conservation Conversations we talk to Cris Sarabia, the President of the California Native Plant Society(www.CNPS.org) and an inspiring community leader in southern California. California is one of the world's 36 biodiversity hotspots. It has more native plant species than any other state in the U.S., and an entire web of life depends on those plants. It has something really special that is worth our protection and love. So, CNPS is dedicated to that. They do their work through conservation, education, gardening, plant science, and even a publishing arm. They have more than 10,000 members and 35 volunteer chapters across the state and Baja, so wherever you live, you can get involved locally in issues that truly matter globally. Native plant conservation is directly tied to and impacted by some of the biggest environmental issues of our time: the extinction crisis, climate change, wildfire... It's a really exciting way to make a difference. Enjoy our conversation with Cris! Special thanks to Liv O’keefe from CNPS Especially if you’re in CA, please look into CNPS’s programs if you’re looking to get involved in your natural community. www.CNPS.org This episode is brought to you in part by our sponsor Tidal Influence, a Californian ecological consulting firm who proudly supports environmental education and all of the diverse conservation efforts that Pelecanus works to highlight. April 17 through 24th 2021 is California Native Week, designated by the California State Legislature in 2010 as an annual celebration of the fantastic diversity of plants on whom this large expanse of unique and uniquely beautiful land and history rests in so many ways. The California Floristic Province is one of the Biodiversity Hot Spots on Earth and as the most populous state in the US, California also has an incredible diversity of humans making their lives here as well. In honor of these plants and their communities, Cultivating Place speaks this week with members of the California Native Plant Society community to chat about what CNPS is, and what it is striving to grow into more fully. It is a small, candid look into how the environmental conservation world generally is meeting this moment in time through the lens of one organization. In looking back over the course of this last year, and many years and decades prior, there is renewed clarity and urgency around the environmental world generally having quite a bit of acknowledging and resetting to do for itself and for the greater benefit of the human and greater than the human world around us. It is in that spirit that I am joined today by CNPS staff member Liv O’Keefe, Senior Director of Public Affairs; by Cris Sarabia, Conservation Director of the Palos Verdes Peninsula land Conservancy and the chair of the board of CNPS, a volunteer position; and finally, by John L. Sanders, Founder, and Director of the Delphinus School of Natural History, who is a CNPS community member and volunteer consultant for the society. Cultivating Place now has a donate button! We thank you so much for listening over the years and we hope you'll support Cultivating Place. We can't thank you enough for making it possible for this young program to grow even more of these types of conversations. The show is available as a podcast on SoundCloud, iTunes, Google Podcast, and Stitcher. To read more and for many more photos please visit www.cultivatingplace.com.

The “Native California Flash Cards: For Culture and Language Learning” come from the creative minds of artist Lyn Risling (Karuk/Yurok/Hupa) and writer and artist Analisa Tripp (Karuk). They are a tool that could inspire a deeper understanding of California Native culture through illustrations of people, plants, animals and designs. Each card has space for instructors to write the word for those illustrations in their own language.

For this episode we sit down with California Native chefs and educators Vincent Medina (Chochenyo Ohlone) and Louis Trevino (Rumsen Ohlone), to talk about their journey revitalizing Ohlone languages and foods in the heart of the San Francisco Bay Area community and across the globe. Tucked into the quiet corner of a busy Berkeley bookstore we joined Vince and Louis at the site of their new “permanent pop-up” restaurant, Café Ohlone. This unique Native California Indian food gathering place is the first of its kind as it focuses on the traditional Ohlone foods of the East Bay and creates a safe space for community to gather and share food and stories. From the delicious menu featuring seasonal foods like acorn bread and quail eggs to their recent work sharing these foods at the Terra Madre Salone del Gusto gathering in Turin, Italy, they talk about reconnecting with the values, respect and love their ancestors shared with the land, plants and foods of their traditional homelands.

This week on Cultivating Place, we’re joined by Genny Arnold, Seed Program Manager at the Theodore Payne Foundation who speaks with us about the care and long-term keeping of our native geophytes — those coolest of plants which have an underground storage organ, like a bulb or tuber or corm, which helps them to withstand some of the planet’s harshest conditions: cold, heat, drought and dark. Or a hot dry California summer. California is home to close to 300 species of native geophytes, many of which are now rare or endangered. This spring, after a winter of closer-to-normal rainfalls, many of our bulbs are treating us to a particularly spectacular year of bloom.
It is California Native Plant Week this week. Officially designated by the California Native Plant Society in 2010, this year the festivities and educational and awareness activities are scheduled all week April 15–23. In celebration of this and in honor of the many native landscapes I love, and native plants that bring beauty, life and a deep sense of place to my home garden, this week I am pleased to welcome Dennis Mudd to Cultivating Place. Dennis is a retired tech industry CEO and developer of such things as MusicMatch and Slacker Radio. He is also an avid native plant home gardener in Poway – near San Diego. In an effort to improve his own native plant home gardening efforts, five years ago now Dennis teamed up with the California Native Plant Society and The Jepson Herbarium to create the now extensive easy to use, online gardening resource known as Calscape. Episode 5 of “The Five Point Move Podcast” brings to you the one and only Robby Smith (NYAC), the popular bearded heavyweight who has enjoyed a dominant stay atop the pecking order at 130 kilograms in the US. Now a four-time US World Team member following his Olympic run in 2016, Smith dished on a variety of topics pertaining to his career while providing entertaining tidbits to serve as context. All of the major bulletpoints are hit including his move up to 120 kilos (now 130) from 96 after 2012, his coming-out party at the 2015 World Championships, training for Rio, and where he sees his career headed through the remainder of the current quad.It has been an especially interesting time in Smith’s career as of late. Following the Rio Games he required surgery on his wrist, a trying period that kept him off the mat. The forced respite also affected his psyche. Once he finally resumed training after the new year, an ankle sprain popped up and derailed his progress. But Smith persevered. In March, he returned to competition in Denmark at the Thor Masters Invitational where he endured a close first round loss but rebounded to win his next four, earning gold in the tournament’s Nordic System format. Next was the 2017 World Team Trials in April. Seeded second, Smith breezed to the best-of-three finals and defeated former training partner Toby Erickson (Army/WCAP) to secure his spot on the US World Team, his fourth time doing so.A week after the World Team Trials, Smith scored a bronze at the 2017 Pan Am Championships in Brazil. This past weekend at the Tbilisi Grand Prix, Smith dropped a tight 5-3 decision to Iosif Chugoshvili (BLR). So he’s been busy. He’ll be getting even busier. Currently, Smith is in Budapest, Hungary for a two-week training camp and upon his arrival back on US soil will begin the final phase of training for the 2017 World Championships. He’s taken fifth twice already — in 2013 and 2015. At age 30, he feels he is better than he’s ever been and gets that point across repeatedly in this episode. Getting on the podium at the Worlds is the goal, though he has other career objectives still in mind. Nothing is off the table when talking to Robby Smith as you’ll find out for yourself.A FEW HIGHLIGHTSSmith on his overall condition and recovery from training at this stage in his career“I’m not doing what I was doing when I was 19, going after it every day grinding and not recovering. You have to do way more for your body to stay going and not getting injured, that’s the recovery part of it. I still grind hard, I grind harder than everybody in the room, but it’s what I do after my practices — it’s the stretching, the cold plunges, the contrast, heat and cold, the icing, the recovery with my trainers — just keeping all of my stuff feeling fresh. If I had known that when I was younger, my body would definitely feel better now but when you’re 19 years old, 20 years old, you feel like a superhero, like nothing can harm you.”Smith on if moving up to heavyweight saved his career following years of draining weight-cutting“Oh, 100%. My body was taking a huge toll. I think I would have been just as dominant at 98 kilos, but that cut was huge. What it did was save me from being a ‘weight-cutter’ and actually becoming a wrestler. Every day my focus walking into the room, the coaches would say, ‘How’s your weight, Robby? How’s your weight, Robby?’ It wasn’t ‘How are you doing?’ or anything like that, it was ‘How’s your weight, Robby? Where’s your weight at, Robby?’ It’s like, Come on, man. You dread getting on a scale because you know you’re going to get bitched at and yelled at and all this stuff. When I made the move up I became a wrestler, and that’s why my wrestling is so exciting. Because I focused on just one thing, and that is beating people up.”Smith on the importance of the 2015 World Championships“There was no doubt after I got done qualifying that weight class that I was going to be an Olympian. That was my spot. Once I qualified it, I looked at (Mark) Halvorson and I was like, ‘We’re going to the Olympics, you know that, right?’ No one was going to stop me, no one was going to come close to me in the US. I did the hardest thing and that’s qualify. The Olympic Trials isn’t hard. The Olympic Trials is a crazy tournament, anything can happen and that’s when most of the stuff does happen. But if you wrestle how you should wrestle and compete to your highest level and compete as a professional, there should be no problems. To qualify your weight class, that’s a feat in itself.”
