DJ LOLLIPOP (American DJ & Producer):"Wow!!! I can't believe how many years have gone by since this landmark medley was created.  This was the second vinyl bootleg that I released.  It was released in January 1983.At the time, I was spinning in Chicago at three different clubs… a straight hipster club, an elite gay club and an urban downtown club.  I loved it!  Each club had it’s own format/hits and very few tunes crossed over.  I loved playing down-tempo funk and R&B at a huge straight/urban club on Michigan Ave, pop and disco at an intimate straight/white club on Division Street and high energy and new wave at a chic, trendy gay club on Oak Street. Back in the early 80's, the nightclubs in Chicago did not cater to mixed groups of clientele yet… but the music did start to bring diverse groups of people together.  Some tunes would cross-over from one crowd to another like The Message by Grandmaster Flash which I played for months in the black club before it crossed over to white clubs, or Native Love by Divine which was a smash at the gay club before it crossed over to the straight clubs. In hindsight, the black clubs and gay clubs helped make songs pop crossovers.  I kept this in mind when arranging the song order.I tried something new in this production – I used every dance hit that came out in 1982 –every single one of them. Black, white, straight, gay – any tune that made a crowd dance – regardless of it’s makeup, was included.  This led to some very eclectic (and surprisingly fun) song transitions.  Like the 1981 & 1987 medleys, this was all done with a pair of Technics 1200’s, a TEAC two track recorder, a razor blade and miles and miles of magnetic recording tape. When originally released on vinyl, the medley was broken up into two sections for a twelve inch record “A” and “B” side.  Here they have been edited together for your non- stop enjoyment.  Many of the songs in this production still pack a dance floor today – while others have faded almost into oblivion.  It's a good thing they are represented here and their place in dance music history accounted for. I know you will love listening to this and I hope it bring back some great memories! If you know these artists, press play on Lollipop's Post-Disco Funk Explosion and fall in love with these favorite classic rare funk gems all over again.Post-Disco is the significant period in popular music history that followed the "death" of commercial disco during late 1970s. The anti-disco sentiment that proliferated at the time was partially due to the over-saturation and the big-business mainstreaming of disco. As a result of the "Disco Sucks" movement and the July 12th 1979 “Disco Demolition Night”, disco records & artists were rejected from airplay and their promotions dropped literally overnight. The face of pop radio changed following this backlash which social critics have described as “a bigoted, macho, attack on non-white and non-heterosexual cultures”. Top 40 radio stations avoided playing music by black artists in an effort to prevent their stations from being labeled with the dreaded "disco" tag.It was the dawn of a new decade and a sonically edited, more stripped-down sound was emerging as a reaction against what was seen as the over-indulgence of disco. Thanks in part to advances in technology, the over produced, melodically complicated "disco sound" was passé, and a simplified sound driven by synthesizers accompanied by rhythm guitar moved dance music toward ever splintering genres. This drift from the original disco sound has been labeled “Post-Disco”. In this music scene are the roots of dance music sub-genres that evolved into Italo-Disco, Boogie, Hi-NRG, Electro, New Wave and early Alternative.Funk music is sometimes overlooked and usually lumped with disco music. However, Funk has its own style, culture and was here before disco's birth. It was born in the mid-'60s by the legendary James Brown. Funk de-emphasizes melody and harmony and brings a strong rhythmic groove of electric bass and drums to the foreground. It usually is heavily syncopated with polyrhythmic rhythms, horn and percussive sections featuring rhythm guitar. Brown had the most outspoken voice in soul music and a groove that would prove to be the future of Funk music.Many of James Brown’s band members such as Bootsy Collins would go on to funk with many other bands like Parliament and Funkadelic which were both created and lead by George Clinton. Parliament had emphasis on horns while Funkadelic had emphasis on psychedelic guitars. Both had a deep, rhythm filled groove that had elements of several genres of music all rolled into one. Clinton had successfully fused together these types of music to create what he called “P-Funk”. The success of Parliament’s "Flashlight" would greatly influence not only funk music, but also New Wave and Hip-Hop.Lollipop’s Post-Disco Funk Explosion celebrates this exact time in musical history when horn sections were replaced by synthesizers and the horns that remained were given simplified arrangements. The classic keyboards of funk, like the Hammond B3 organ and Fender Rhodes piano began to be replaced by new analog synthesizers like the MiniMoog and Yamaha DX7.Join Lollipop and the legions of counterculture groove disciples in enjoying this sonic slice of historic funk cake. In the Post–Disco era between 1979 and 1981, bands that began during the P-Funk era incorporated technological developments to continue to craft funk hits. The magical formula of classic funk guitar and rhythmic horn hits combined with thumping synthesized bass lines became a club phenomenon. Groups such as Cameo, Zapp, Lakeside, The Gap Band, the Bar-Kays, all found their biggest hits during this period, but as styles evolved, funk had lost its commercial impact by the latter half of the 1980’s. When the temperature drops - you'll be able to warm yourself with the blazing beats and sizzling hot vocals of my latest mix - Lollipop's Winter Solstice: Equinoctial Dance Mix 2.009. This continuous dance mix honors the winter solstice which occurs at the instant when the Sun's position in the sky is at its greatest angular distance on the other side of the equatorial plane from the observer.  Worldwide, interpretation of the event has varied from culture to culture, but most cultures hold recognition of rebirth, involving holidays, festivals, gatherings, rituals or other celebrations.  Celebrating the winter solstice is an ancient idea older than written history.  The harvest was in yet it was not yet time to plant again.  People were stuck indoors with each other between two seasons of heavy work - the timing seemed perfect for a festival!  Early Egyptian and Persian traditions merged in ancient Rome into a festival for the god of seed-time, Saturn.  The people gave themselves up to wild joy - feasting, giving gifts and decorating their homes with greenery (sound familiar?)  As the old year died, rules of ordinary living were relaxed. During the winter solstice festivals the usual order of the year was suspended: businesses, courts and schools were closed; grudges/quarrels forgotten; and even wars were interrupted or postponed while cross-dressing, masquerades and merriment of all kinds prevailed.  As Roman culture became more licentious, so did the celebrations. It is in this joyous spirit that I created this mix which has all the hottest tunes that will be packing dance floors this winter.  Included are the season's essential remixers turning out some new pop flavors with absolutely ALL the dancefloor divas in attendance, seamlessly mixed into a frothy concoction to take you on a mystical musical journey. As a very, very special treat - I'm proud to be able to debut and share this new classic in Chill compilations, Andrew Sonic's Global Grooves.   I have to confess, this is one of Andrew Sonic's most comprehensive mixes I've heard to date.  He scoured the globe to gather the planet's finest down-tempo music (I didn't even know Greece produced such tracks). Part of the enjoyment of my blog is to be able to share things about myself and my career in music.  Here is something you probably did not know about me… I am a sound/color synesthete.  In the psychological phenomenon known as synesthesia, individuals' sensory systems are a bit more intertwined than usual.  Some people, for example, report seeing colors when musical notes are played.  Like most synesthetes, I consider it a gift - an additional "hidden" sense. Without being fully aware of it, I apply this gift when enjoying music and creating mixes.  Besides using a songs’ tempo, key and energy level, I sequence and mix individual music tracks together based on color harmony.  This “visualization” of sound is why I might prefer a particular remix of a song over another for the context of what I’m trying to create.  "We are each gifted in a unique and important way. The legend continues...It has been two decades since I produced my last "Top Tune Medley". My previous medleys have traveled the world and are even featured in a full color, printed, historical reference book "The Bootleg Guide to Disco Acetates , Funk, Rap & Disco Medleys".It is sure an honor to have my work immortalized in the American Library of Congress!  Many things have changed in the club/music scene.  It is my opinion that the iconic medley is gone forever.  Back in the day, there was usually only one club version of a song released.  When you were in a club and heard a few familiar notes of your favorite jam - you became euphoric!  All it took was a few recognizable notes and you knew you were about to enjoy a favorite club anthem.  Nowadays crowds aren't really sure what they are dancing to until the vocals start.  At last count, Britney Spears' "Gimme More" had no less than 38+ remixes!  The iconic version of a song is dead. RIP. With the fracturing of the dance music market into so many sub-genres, it was a challenge to select what I felt was either the most recognizable dance mix of a song or the version that was able to retain the same vibe as the one I usually spin.The other big challenge for this production was the current use of extended no-beat breakdowns. My husband Allan and I traveled to New York where we were invited to PETER MAX's office for a private reception.  There we enjoyed seeing the inner sanctum of one of America's cultural legends.  I was absolutely thrilled to see so many large pieces of his work.  His collection of eclectic souvenirs included President Clinton's saxaphone, a full-sized fiberglass cow, a 6' tall soda pop bottle and the signed piano from 'Ringo Starr' all glowing in psychedelic colors painted by the man himself. The best part of this experience was being invited into PETER MAX's personal painting studio by Peter himself.  He was warm and genuine as he welcomed me by shaking my hand and showing me where he creates his art.  He showed me his painting easels, brushes, paints and the DJ booth he has set up in the corner of the room.  TURNTABLES!  lol - apparently he likes to paint accompanied by a musical muse and has someone come in and keep the tunes going for him while other members of the entourage jam on bongos and other percussion instruments. 'The local teenage haunt in Norridge Village, Illinois was the Hub Axle. Known by most as the BEST ROLLERSKATING RINK EVER!  To this day, I've never seen a rink that could compare to it's size.  It was twice as big as it's closest competitor (Chicago's Rainbow Roller Rink on Clark Street) and it is missed and mourned by everyone who was a regular. This mix reflects the most magical time in my life. This was when the seeds of the realization that I could mix records for a crowd were planted.  Weekdays existed to only fill the void between my next visit to the rink for a speedy whip around it's glorious wood floor.  We waited in long lines in 3 feet of snow to get into the Hub's disco roller skating on Friday nights and Saturday nights.  What a thrill!  The energy and heat that radiated from that place literally steamed up all the windows.  The fantastic lighting - awesome sound system.  Brilliant!! I recently rented a DAT machine (very 80's) and transferred some old DAT's that had studio production on them from when I also did production.  I found a glorious medley I thought you would enjoy.  This one is all 1987 club hits that I was spinning at the time.  I now do digital editing and it's funny to think that I originally put this together on a Tascam 4 track by just overlaying vinyl records and using a razor blade and tape to physically cut and edit it together!  Oh my did it take a lot of time!!!!!  It's so much easier now.  I hope you enjoy it! The 1981 Top Tune Medley is the first of my productions to be released as a vinyl record.It is a collection of all the big dancefloor filling hits from my first nightclub in Chicago called "POETS" on 9 West Division Street.  When I produced this first medley, I was still learning all the tricks of editing. Also, all the songs used were hits during 1981. Some were released at the end of 1980, but my production was a sonic snapshot of what was packing dance floors in Chicago that year.  I was 17 years old at the time and working with a fake ID that said I was 22 - I still can't believe I got away with it. lol.  What fun. I was so naive.  I just wanted to spin records for a packed dancefloor.  I hope this brings back lots of great memories for you. I bet it will!
