This Pride month, we chose to cover three biographical projects that focus on Black queer experiences. First, we talk about two different approaches to presenting the life of Marsha P. Johnson, an important activist involved in the 1969 uprising at the Stonewall Inn. With the Drunk History episode "Marsha P. Johnson Sparks the Stonewall Riots," and the short film "Happy Birthday, Marsha!" we see two paths to sharing Johnson's story & her connection to Pride. We also talk about the gaps in the documentary "The Gospel According To André" -  a recent study of the icon Andre Leon Talley. Join us for this look at the man called "the Kofi Annan of what you've got on" and the woman who insisted: "no pride for some of us, without liberation for all of us!" To do that, we must understand where and what has up divided and work to bridge those gaps AND sometimes have very tough conversations. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thghtswpeachez/message

Section 28 was an amendment to the Local Government Act of 1988, which prohibited local authorities from intentionally 'promoting homosexuality', or promoting the 'acceptibility of homosexuality as a pretended family relationship'. This legislation came into place in 1988, and planted fear into our educational spaces. For years, Section 28 created a culture of silence around LGBT+ identities in our schools, and for many LGBT+ people, this silence became shame. Section 28 was in place for 15 years, and had an immeasurable impact on generations of LGBT+ young people, as well as limiting the education around LGBT+ identities for all young people. November 18th 2023 marks 20 years since Section 28 was fully repealed. This Pride & Progress special event explores what Section 28 looked like in our past, its legacy in our present, and how we can learn from it to create a more inclusive future. Our incredible speakers: · Professor Emeritus Sue Sanders, Chair of Schools Out UK, and co-founder of LGBT+ History Month UK (X @suesanders03). · Professor Paul Baker, author of 'OUTRAGEOUS!: The Story of Section 28 and Britian's Battle for LGBT Education' (X @_paulbaker_). · Professor Catherine Lee, author of 'Pretended: Schools and Section 28' (including her story, which helped inform the film 'Blue Jean') (X @DrCatherineLee).

Lez Hang Out | A Lesbian Podcast

It's fine-ally time to talk about the Target fiasco. This week Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) hang out to wrap up Pride month and Season 6 with a look at what it really takes to be a good queer ally in 2023. As anti-LGBTQ+ hate increases across the country, it is no longer enough for allies to just be okay with queer people existing. Corporations that were previously known for performatively turning their logo into a rainbow each June and selling Pride themed merchandise are now pulling back and removing what little support they had been showing in favor of appeasing the loud, fanatical homophobic and transphobic bigots. With our right to simply exist as we are under attack, it is so important for allies to show up and stand up for the queer community and to do so in ways that do not cause further harm.  We are done accepting the bare minimum from so-called ‘allies'. Just going to Pride and posting pics of yourself day drinking in your Love Is Love t-shirt are not going to cut it anymore. The stakes are rising incredibly fast and true allies need to recognize the very real fear that queer people are currently experiencing. Depending on where you live, it may have never felt safe to be gay. However, now even the spaces typically known for being welcoming, safe environments for queer people are under attack. The safe havens that gays have been fleeing to from their small towns for decades are beginning to look a lot less safe. This Pride month has been a heavy one and has served as a stark and much needed reminder for many that Pride has always been and will always be a riot, a protest, and much more than rainbow capitalism wants it to be.  It's entirely possible to not be homophobic, but still not be a particularly good ally. Take Target for example. Historically, Target has not been homophobic and has long been viewed as ‘gay Walmart'. But this month, Target showed that when push comes to shove, they are not here for the community and are in fact a bad ally. If you think you are an ally but then balk at the first sign of backlash or resistance, you are not actually a good ally. Instead, a good ally is someone who is willing to be a little uncomfortable, willing to embrace change, and willing to show support even when that support is unpopular.  Follow along on Twitter: Lez Hang Out (@lezhangoutpod) and answer our Q & Gay at the end of every episode. Okay, fair warning, this is a big one. Because Rainbow Capitalism is bad and also complex, and we need to talk about why that is. And yeah, we're gonna talk about Target, and Dylan Mulvaney and Bud Light, and the Los Angeles Dodgers. If corporations want our sweet queer dollars, they need to start supporting us in tangible ways that matter. Writer and activist Felix Mack returns to discuss how doubts are normal and how to take up space as a man in a cautious way. Also you might not have known this, but trans people melt in the rain! On this Independence Day 2022, everything is different now. It's a very dark moment in American history. And Friday, June 24, 2022 was a very dark day. So this July 4th, after the overturning of Roe vs Wade, hundreds of millions of Americans aren't feeling like they have much independence right now.  In this episode, we're gonna talk about Roe from an angle you won't get anywhere else. How will the Roe decision impact the military and veterans? How will it impact our national security, military recruiting, and the lives of troops stationed in all 50 states and around the world? This Independence Day, everything is different now. And we'll dig into Roe, the blockbuster latest January 6th hearings, John Wood launching an independent Senate bid in Missouri, a big decision from the Supreme Court you probably didn't hear about, how Sean Penn is fighting for fighter jets for Ukraine, and why this might be the most dangerous Pride month ever.  This Independence Day, everything is different now. But leaders continue to rise to the moment. Leaders like our inspiring guest, Lindsay Church. Lindsay is an American badass. A fighter. An organizer. A patriot. Soon to be a parent. And an expert on the impact of Roe on the military, veterans, LGBTQ people and more.  Lindsay Church (they/them) is the Executive Director and Co-Founder of Minority Veterans of America, a non-partisan, nonprofit organization dedicated to creating an equitable and just world for the minority veteran community – veterans of color, women, LGBTQ, and (non)religious minorities. Lindsay has nearly a decade of experience rooted in veteran's advocacy and grassroots organizing. They have facilitated agency-wide cultural competency trainings, provided Congressional testimonies, and speaks on myriad issues related to the equity and inclusion for minority and underrepresented communities. They'll break down the unique threats facing women, LGBTQ people and their families. And why some queer familes like Lindsay's are rushing to get a lawyer and updated their passports. Lindsay is a leader for the people. ALL people. Their people. Your people. Our people. ALL PEOPLE. We've come far in the last decade, but have so much further to go. But brave LGBTQ military and veteran leaders have been on the front lines, made unimaginable sacrifices, paved the way, and made our country stronger. And Lindsay is one of those leaders. They represent the best of what our country is—and what it can be. This Pride month, we at Righteous Media and Independent Americans again celebrate these leaders. But we'll also honor them by continuing the fight. Which is more urgent now than ever. And we'll dig deep into all of it in an urgent, timely and extremely informative new pod.  Every episode of Independent Americans hosted by Paul Rieckhoff (@PaulRieckhoff) breaks down the most important news stories–and offers light to contrast the heat of other politics and news shows. It's independent content for independent Americans. Always with a unique focus on national security, foreign affairs and military and veterans issues. In these trying times especially, Independent Americans is your trusted place for independent news, politics, inspiration and hope. "Pride, in this context, is a stunning, glorious refusal to believe the lies the world tells about you. Pride is the claiming of your belonging in this world as you are, not as I tell you you should be. This Pride, this celebration of who God made you to be, is a rejection of shame, and an embracing of joy; a rejection of hatred and an embracing of love. This Pride is an act of grace. This Pride month, the world is (almost) back! It's Pride weekend in my just-reopened hometown of Los Angeles, and the children... are... living! It’s an amazing feeling for most of the world to be able to dance, rejoice, and celebrate together again. Of course, it’s still not this way for everyone - and this past year has been filled with tremendous pain and loss - and yet, there have been so many silver linings and lessons learned from this pandemic year, along with the realization that tomorrow is not promised to any of us. As many of you know (and probably just as many of you don’t!) outside of my DJ/producer work, I work full-time at one of the largest LGBTQ social justice organizations in the U.S. Pride season is a busy time for us, and for me, it’s not all dance parties and celebrations. Pride was - and must always continue to be - a protest. The roots of our joy are interconnected with the long struggle of the fight for equality - something that so many in the LGBTQ community still have yet to fully achieve. Music is my creative outlet, and this year it’s my joy to share with you Stephen Jusko and I’s new remix of “Stronger” by Sam Feldt feat. Kesha, a track that we're sure will become a pride anthem for us for years to come. Plus, this podcast contains amazing new standout production work from Brett Oosterhaus, Enrico Meloni, Leanh, Thiago Antony, Toy Armada & Jace M, Junior Senna & Rafael Dutra, and updated house classics from Sam Divine and The Cube Guys & Bob Sinclar. If you’re new to my podcast, each episode of my #PugLife series is a journey in progressive house and high-energy dance music. Each set starts out with a house warm up before kicking into the peak hour zone. About 3/4ths of the way through, I go into a short darker zone, before switching gears and launching into uplifting tracks and classics at the end! I hope you enjoy the music… and if you do enjoy it, please tip! Find me on Venmo: @DJBlacklow Happy Pride month, y’all! Charlotte Clymer (@CMClymer) is a fighter. [1:23:12] An Army veteran and one of the most influential trans activists in the world, she’s gone from from a trailer park in Texas, to Army Infantry Basic Training at Fort Benning, to advocating for transgender people worldwide. Charlotte fights for herself and for others. Tough, patriotic and sharp, she burst onto the political scene in 2018 after being denied access to a Washington, DC restaurant bathroom. A dynamic powerhouse on Twitter, the former Press Secretary at the largest and most powerful LGBTQ organization in the country (HRC--Human Rights Campaign), Charlotte has written for Glamour, Vice, NBC and been a commentator on CBS News Sunday Morning. As a soldier, Charlotte carried the caskets of Americans killed in action. As an activist, she’s carried the stories of countless unheard voices. This Pride month, and in the wake of the historic Supreme Court decision protecting LGBTQ employees from discrimination based on sex, Charlotte takes us inside the life of a front-line fighter deep in the most critical fights of our time. She breaks down Trump’s politicization of the military, the Pentagon’s transban, why Mayor Pete Buttigieg’s campaign was historic, her favorite drink, if she’ll go back in the Army and whether she’ll run against Senator Ted Cruz back home in Texas.  Following our most popular episode ever with actor and activist Ron Perlman, Angry Americans host Paul Rieckhoff (@PaulRieckhoff) leads a powerful conversation with another important, inspiring and iconic American changing the face of America’s past, present and future. And, he blazes through the news you need to know about--as always with a special focus on national security, veterans and first-responder issues. From the explosion of coronavirus cases inside the Department of Veterans Affairs, to chaos inside the Pentagon, to the protests and pandemic spreading nationwide, Rieckhoff breaks it down with fire, wit and independence.  It’s an important and inspiring Pride month special episode of THE podcast for independent American politics, news and culture. Author's Note: Welcome back to The Fic List! As you may know from listening to our previous episodes, we record pretty far in advance - usually several weeks to a couple of months before they go live. As such, there are times when something we've recorded doesn't sit quite right for the moment when it hits the airwaves. This is one of those times. We recorded this episode via Skype on April 25th. While we were in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic by then, we did not anticipate everything that has happened since. This episode is silly and a little flippant because, at the time, that's how we were coping with the situation at hand - but we recognize that nothing about the last few weeks has been silly or flippant. We want to state unequivocally and without any hesitation that Black Lives Matter and that we support the movement for racial equity and justice for Black and Indigenous people of color. This Pride month, we particularly want to recognize and pay respect to our BIPOC queer and trans elders and siblings, who are the pillars of the queer community and without whom Pride would not exist. Here are some organizations/funds that you can support: The Loveland Foundation (Committed to showing up for communities of color in unique and powerful ways, with a particular focus on Black women and girls.) : https://lovelandfoundation.org Self Evident Truths Project (Queer COVID-Relief fund for low-income queer folx) : https://queercovidrelief.com Black LGBTQIA+ Migrant Project (BLMP is providing cash assistance to Black LGBTQ+ migrants and first generation people dealing with the impact of COVID-19.) : https://transgenderlawcenter.org/programs/blmp Third Wave Fund (Third Wave Fund is the only activist fund led by and for women of color, intersex, queer, and trans folks under 35 years old in the US.) : thirdwavefund.org For Other Ways You Can Help: https://blacklivesmatters.carrd.co/ Summary: We're here! We're queer! And at long last, we're bringing you season two of The Fic List!!! For our first episode of season two, we're changing things up and hopefully making our episodes a little easier to digest - cutting down to one tag or AU per episode, alternating between the two every other episode. We're also recording separately to maintain proper social distancing, and maybe (?), hopefully (???) posting on a regular schedule (???) for the first time in our lives??? So join us on this journey as we make a whole new season of this silly lil' podcast we love so much. And also review some truly delightful Pride smut, because, frankly, we've earned it. Today's guest hosts are Edwith Theogene and Charlotte Hancock, Organizing Director and Communications Director for Generation Progress. During today's episode, they discuss Pride Month, which takes place this and every June. Pride Month is a time to celebrate the LGBTQ community and reflect on what has been done, and what still must be done, to achieve full equality. Pride also commemorates the Stonewall Riots of June 1969, which were led by trans women of color in response to police violence towards LGBTQ+ patrons at the Stonewall Inn. This Pride month in particular feels extremely significant for a few reasons. One reason is that the Supreme Court ruled earlier this week that Tile VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 protects LGBTQ+ workers from workplace discrimination, which means it is illegal to discriminate against or fire employees for their sexual orientation or gender identity. The case will also give LGBTQ+ people and advocates stronger legal standing when it comes to addressing discrimination in other institutions or services. The other reason is because massive numbers of Americans across the country have taken to the streets in recent weeks to demand an end to systemic racism and state-sanctioned violence against Black Americans. Black members of the LGBTQ+ community—particularly Black trans women—have been especially vulnerable to violence, and their murders and disappearances are too often forgotten or glossed over by local and national media. Consequently, we have seen a push during this Pride month especially to recall the history of Pride, which began with riots against police violence led by trans women of color, in order to emphatically state that Black trans lives matter. To talk with Edwith and Charlotte more about Pride month, the Black Lives Matter movement, and more, they’re joined by Nadine Smith, the Executive Director of Equality Florida, and Dr. Lourdes Ashley Hunter, the Executive Director of the Trans Women of Color Collective. Here are the Twitter handles for today's guests and their respective organizations: Nadine Smith - @1NadineSmith, Equality Florida - @equalityfl, Dr. Lourdes Ashley Hunter - @HunterLourdes, Trans Women of Color Collective - @twoccnyc. I thought for a long time about delaying this episode or simply not releasing it at all, but for all the darkness in the world, we still need art. We need voices of hope. It is Pride month, where we celebrate who we are and how far we’ve come, and where we honor and remember those who came before us. Stonewall was a riot against police brutality, started by Marsha P. Johnson, a Black, trans woman. We would not have Pride without queer, Black activists. This Pride in Place episode was inspired in part by the folx at Buddies in Bad Times Theater in Toronto, a space dedicated to the promotion of queer theatrical expression.   The contributors who wished to be named for this episode are: K.
