We're Listen Like Fans podcast is back with Season 2, whoohoooo.... And in this week's episode, we're delighted to have on the Listen Like Fans podcast the extremely versatile and talented 'MiG' Ayesa - or to give him his full name, Miguel Alfonso Ramon Legarda Ayesa. As many INXS fans will remember, MiG was a contestant on RockStar INXS. Mig was one of the final three contestants and became a frontrunner with versions of "Live and Let Die" and "Baby, I Love Your Way".  MiG joins Bee from a cruise ship in a wide-ranging career interview to discuss all things performing on TV, studio and stage - including singing in multiple languages such as Japanese! In the twenty years since RockStar INXS ended, Mig has enjoyed a successful music career, releasing solo albums, working in theatre and appearing in television and film.  On the podcast today, MiG talks about his break into theatre in London's West End and meeting the surviving members of rock band Queen for his lead stint in We Will Rock You. All this would change, however, when Mig decided to try his luck auditioning for a new reality TV programme... Auditioning at the Shepherd's Bush Empire in London to the INXS classic 'I Send a Message', a certain Mr Pengilly would be in the audience watching. This led to a second audition and then making the final 50 cut to perform in Los Angeles.  MiG recounts the laborious process of filming for each round of the RockStar INXS audition and eventually making it into the last 15. During his time with RockStar INXS, 'Baby, I Love Your Way', the Peter Frampton classic, became one of the standout performances of the entire series. MiG takes us behind the scenes and explains how the songs were chosen and how he came up with the arrangement to make the song his own.  In something of a fortuitous twist of fate, this would lead to Peter Frampton playing acoustic guitar on MiG's debut album. Talking about his debut solo album, MiG gives the inside on how Mötley Crüe's Tommy Lee was responsible for MiG's debut album being shelved by the record label for two years!  Finally, MiG talks reuniting with the original RockStar INXS house band and many of the contestants for the upcoming anniversary shows at the Avalon in Hollywood. With more than 25 years in the industry, MiG has had a varied and interesting career, and the signs are that there are plenty more twists and turns to come. He toured the album's first iteration in the United Kingdom last year and will continue expanding the project this year.His album, Hudson Ragtime Piano Suite, written during the pandemic, showcased Tony Kieraldo's original compositions and the history of Hudson, New York's five main streets.  He regularly collaborates with tap dance sensation Demi Remick, releasing arrangements that range from Taylor Swift to The Wizard of Oz.  In 2017, Tony conducted the critically acclaimed opera The Mother of Us All, which received reviews in both The New Yorker and The New York Times. He also performed on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and twice at the Obama White House. Earlier this week, the IMF singled out the UK as one of the countries set to suffer a “large negative effect” from the energy crisis caused by the war in the Middle East.

University of Chicago Assistant Professor in the Department of Cinema and Media Studies, AE Stevenson and Rutgers University–New Brunswick, Assistant Professor of Journalism and Media Studies Brooklyne Gipson join us to talk about digital Black feminism online. We start our discussion with America's relations with the platform TikTok, and how it is a large social media site for Black creators. We then explore how to define community and culture, especially for Black people online, in a world resistant to progress. Building from this, AE and Brooklyne discuss how certain communicative practices in the Black community focus on storytelling as a vehicle for critical thought rather than a lack of media literacy education. This leads to the larger topic of online discourse around the films Sinners and One Battle After Another. We end with dissecting how the recognition of, or lack thereof, Black culture affects people's views of these films. Although they both feature Black actors, they interact with culture very differently. Ultimately, we push for an awareness of the multilayered discussions of media seen as progressive or discursive. PRP 007 Mini-Broadcast: Episode 9– Live and Let Die (With Robbie Sims) Since the beginning of the show, Brian has done his best to strong-arm discussion of Agent 007 into as many podcasts as he could. Finally he convinced Sarah to embark on a new mission: the Permanent Record Podcast 007 Mini-Broadcast! This occasional series from your friends Brian & Sarah started with "Dr. No" and will work its way up to the most recent Bond adventure, and on the way, it will discuss and critique all of the 007 theme songs and other relevant recordings. It's a dream come true for one of the hosts - and for Bond fans everywhere! Speaking of Bond fans everywhere, they will no doubt be delighted to learn that Robbie Sims, author of the delightful book Quantum of Silliness: The Peculiar World of Bond, James Bond, can once again be found co-hosting this installment with Brian and Sarah. Episode 9 in the series brings us up to the 1973 film Live and Let Die. It's Roger Moore's first appearance as the MI6 agent, and it's also the first Bond movie to feature a rock song for the theme. The song was written by Paul and Linda McCartney, performed by Paul and his band Wings, and produced by George Martin. George Martin also ended up providing the score for the film. Our three hosts discuss how Paul McCartney and George Martin became a part of the 007 universe as well as what led erstwhile Bond composer John Barry to be uninvolved with the franchise's eighth film. The trio talk about the chart success of the theme song as well as the other awards and accolades it received. George Martin's score is discussed, with some speculation over how John Barry would have done with the score for this film that covers some different thematic territory than other Bond movies. While discussing the movie, Robbie, Brian, and Sarah also talk about the fact that the theme song is performed in the film, and Brian has an impromptu trivia session with Robbie and Sarah about Bond theme songs being heard during other Bond movies. And of course, each host reveals where "Live and Let Dies" falls in their personal ranking of Bond themes. There's talk about the current state of affairs in the Bond universe, and Robbie is put to the test again with a series of Bond trivia questions. This week our Black History Month series continues with a look at the 1974 blaxploitation martial arts mashup, Black Belt Jones, starring Jim Kelly and Gloria Hendry. Kelly was coming in hot off of his run in the legendary Bruce Lee movie, Enter The Dragon and with Bruce dead and a public appetite ravenous for more martial arts movies it just made sense to spin off one of its stars to their own martial arts movie. Hendry was coming in off her turn as a Bond girl in Live and Let Die and a string of excellent blaxploitation movies like Black Caesar and Hell Up In Harlem. In this absolute cartoon of a martial arts movie, the mafia has bought into a valuable city project to build a new civic center in South Central Los Angeles but the only thing holding up the development is one holdout, a karate school that refuses to sell out. The mafia calls up a local loan shark to put the pressure on the school and when they accidentally kill the school's owner it's up to Black Belt Jones and the owner's daughter to team up, rip off the gangsters and get justice. Things get a little blurry between the beginning and the end but in spite of it flying by the seat of its pants and barely making any sense, the movie is a hell of a good time. The boys head to prison on Devil's Island to discuss 1973's “Papillon”! One of the highest-grossing movies of the year, this true-story account of Steve McQueen's character befriending Dustin Hoffman's character to help keep each other alive and prepare their escape from the no-chance-of-return prison, a world away from their native France. Made by the team behind Oscar-winner “Patton” from 1971, shot very much on location, some call this McQueen's best performance. Before we get into it, John gives us a mini-review of “Hamnet”, the romantic drama film by Chloé Zhao starring Paul Mescal and Jessie Buckley, based on the book based on the play. Why You Need to Know Her Story - Started her career as a legal secretary for the NAACP working on landmark civil rights cases - Became a Playboy model and blaxploitation icon in films like *Black Caesar* - Shattered glass ceilings as James Bond's first Black love interest a massive deal in 1973 The Censorship No One Talks About Her role was revolutionary, but not everyone was ready for it. When Live and Let Die screened in apartheid South Africa all her romantic scenes with Roger Moore were cut completely because the regime couldn't handle a Black woman and white man in love. ###
