From NAACP Secretary to Bond Girl: The Groundbreaking Story of Gloria Hendry" On the latest episode of Trey's Table I'm unpacking the incredible journey of Gloria Hendry a woman who went from typing legal briefs for the NAACP during the Civil Rights Movement to making history as the first Black Bond girl in Live and Let Die (1973). Why You Need to Know Her Story - Started her career as a legal secretary for the NAACP working on landmark civil rights cases - Became a Playboy model and blaxploitation icon in films like *Black Caesar* - Shattered glass ceilings as James Bond's first Black love interest a massive deal in 1973 The Censorship No One Talks About Her role was revolutionary, but not everyone was ready for it. When Live and Let Die screened in apartheid South Africa all her romantic scenes with Roger Moore were cut completely because the regime couldn't handle a Black woman and white man in love. ###

How not to bÚkl under the strain, musical insights with an up and coming Irish artist to watch

We chatted with Cork musician and artist bÚkl about the challenges of making music and getting it heard in 2025, as well as the joys of being based in the People's Republic Cork. See more about them here bukl.bandcamp.com Who are we talking to, is it a logical journey to what you do now? bÚkl is my artist name. Pronounced like 'buachaill'. I love Irish but we've always been in a bit of a twilight zone with it, and that's ok. I grew up in Myrtleville, Cork, by the sea. Music was always exciting to me ever since my Dad played me 'Live and Let Die' by wings on our turntable when I was around 5. I think it is a logical journey, even if I went about it arseways. I've been playing guitar, singing and writing songs and poetry since my early teens, and I have a degree in Music. In college I learned how to produce music with a DAW and MIDI. But I struggled for a few years mentally after leaving college. I stopped playing music and was afraid to leave my house. So music was shelved for a while, but thankfully I was able to revive myself and get back into it. Working in a record store with a very supportive boss was a huge help. I never stopped listening though. At the same time, mental health issues like anxiety and depression don't mix well with social media, so that part is tricky if I want to try to promote my stuff. bÚkl - Eclipsed (Official Music Video) bÚkl coming through from Cork What music did you love as a kid? It varies quite a bit. I liked the boy and girl bands in the late 90s, Boy zone and Spice Girls, when I was about 5-8, also the charting dance stuff like ATB and Dario G a bit after that. Then my parents got Sky and I discovered Kerrang TV at about 12. I was mesmerized by rock and metal, it was the best thing I had ever heard. I think the first song I loved on Kerrang was 'Links 1234' by Rammstein. The video with the ants vs the termites is still vivid in my head. Then I bought my first CD with my own money from Ray in MusicZone in 2001 after he opened that year in Carrigaline. I wasn't allowed to get Limp Bizkit because of all the language so I got The Offspring, 'Conspiracy of One's instead, which has less language! What are you working on musically now? At the moment, I'm rehearsing with my friend and colleague, Young Adam, to put the bÚkl music together in a live setting. We work with backing tracks and a loop pedal. Two guitars. I haven't played live in nearly 10 years so my confidence isn't great, but we're enjoying our jam sessions, so fingers crossed. I'm also going through my old recording devices and transferring riffs and song ideas to my laptop so I can flesh them out and record them in future. Do you feel it is easier or harder to create music now? I suppose it's easier for people to create music now because of how technology has progressed and that we have so many devices with recording capabilities. But I think if you have the passion you'll always find a way. I remember saving up for a camcorder when I was around 10 so I could make home movies. When I was about 14 I used a karaoke machine that we had to record songs simply at home on cassette. I got a Zoom H4 recorder in college. And in recent years I've used the DAW Reaper which is very reasonably priced compared to other options. And how about to create awareness and a buzz about what you have made? I have mixed feelings on this because there is more indie music out there now than ever and nearly everyone is on social media, where you can reach a lot of people. But it can be difficult to break through the fog. Also I find social media tough mentally, you never know what odd responses you'll receive from people, or if you'll receive any response at all! A lot of the time people are kind but the rare digs can stick in your head. But I think if you work at building a good following on your platform of choice it can be rewarding in the long run. What are the pros and cons of being based in Cork for a musician? There are plenty of music heads here who ap...

Paul McCartney certainly knows how to stay busy! 2 weeks ago Paul "Rocked The Bowery Ballroom" and closed out the 50th Anniversary of SNL!  Today, 26th February 2025 he announced the forthcoming release of his OWN book titled: "Wings: The Story of a Band On The Run."   The press release: As the Sixties came to a close, Paul was faced with the daunting prospect of being a solo artist for the first time. Wings' ascension to the top of the charts with classic albums including Band on the Run, Venus and Mars and At the Speed of Sound, along with the band's stadium-filling live shows would prove to critics and fans that not all great acts are impossible to follow. Wings:The Story of a Band on the Run is a rousing, stereophonic celebration of the songs, collaborations and performances that would shape the soundtrack of the late 20th century. Drawn from over 500,000 words, based on dozens of hours of interviews with Paul and numerous key players in the band's orbit, Wings: The Story of a Band on the Run weaves together the improbable trajectory of Paul McCartney and his newly formed band (featuring co-founding members Linda McCartney and Denny Laine) across the technicolor 1970s until their dissolution in 1981.  Edited by the prize-winning historian Ted Widmer and organized around nine Wings albums, the oral history sheds new light on the immediate aftermath of the seismic global impact of The Beatles' break-up, as the musical landscape and tastes began to splinter and diverge along with societal views. The narrative follows the various incarnations of the band as they survive a mugging in Nigeria, appear unannounced at UK university halls, tour in a sheared-off school bus with their children, while producing some of the most indelible and acclaimed music of the decade, including: “Mull of Kintyre,” “Live and Let Die,” “Band on the Run,” “My Love,” “Jet,” “With a Little Luck,” “Silly Love Songs,” “Let ‘Em In,” “Junior's Farm” and more.  With more than 100 black-and-white and color photographs, many never seen before, Wings: The Story of a Band on the Run is part of a larger reexamination and appreciation of the group and their catalog, including the 2024 theatrical release of the rare Wings live-in-studio performance film One Hand Clapping and its accompanying album; 50th anniversary editions of the Wings albums Band on the Run (released February 2024) and Venus and Mars (releasing March 2025); and a forthcoming documentary on Paul McCartney's solo and Wings-related musical work of the 1970s from Academy Award-winning filmmaker, Morgan Neville. 2025 is shaping up to be a FANTASTIC year for all of us Macca-diehards!

The episode's title is a quote from Quantum of Solace, specifically the scene where Mathis attempts to get to the bottom of Bond's sleep problems. In the Bond films we don't see our hero getting healthy, natural sleep all that often. Perhaps because, as Hitchcock famously asserted, ‘drama is life with the dull bits cut out', we're supposed to assume Bond sleeps like a normal human being when we're not looking. On the occasions where we do see Bond waking up, it's usually because he's been drugged or knocked unconscious. But this is a different story in the books. David has gone back through Fleming's 14 Bond books and found there are more than 400 direct references to sleep - that's more than 30 per book! Might this suggest that Fleming himself had an interesting relationship with sleep that he transposed into his character? There are definite patterns across the books, which David guides us through here, highlighting particularly intriguing examples from Casino Royale, Live and Let Die, Moonraker, From Russia, With Love and Thunderball. Is there anything from the Bond films and the Fleming books we can use to help us address our own sleep problems? Both Alex and David have wrestled with sleep issues their entire lives, including experiencing prolonged periods of insomnia. But there are differences… Alex is a night owl, an evening person, someone who has no issue being wide awake really late at night. David is the opposite, a lark, who is mentally and physically most alert early in the morning. Although neither Alex nor David are sleep scientists (and sleep science as an academic discipline is still very new!), both have put in a lot of effort to resolving their sleep issues, including reading some of the same books - sometimes with different results! Here, both talk through the approaches they've tried and tested over the years and reveal how they have reframed their relationships with sleep. Sleep hygiene is key for both of them. How does alcohol, caffeine and what we do in the hour before bed make a difference? Alex and David also tackle: Why is it important to know your chronotype (night owl/morning lark, etc)? How does insomnia relate to anxiety? What happens if we never sleep? (Like Gustav Graves in Die Another Day) Should we be concerned if we don't dream? If we experience night terrors (like Bond does in the books) how can we deal with these? What are the ups and downs of sleeping pills? (There are a lot of them in Fleming!) How do sleep rhythms differ internationally? Why is jet lag so evil? What's the sun got to do with sleep? Why is it sometimes more difficult to sleep in hotels than home? How does Fleming's Bond always wake up on time without an alarm clock? And what is his standard wake up time? What chronotype does that make him?

YOU ONLY LIVE ONCE | Live and Let Die is an awesome song from Paul McCartney that reminds us of this common lie to live your life now. Carpe Diem, the Latin sentiment for “Seize the day,” while inspirational, can lead us to live in such a way that does not display the hope we have of eternal life. If all we are is crude matter, then sure, why not do whatever is going to be best for you in this life? But God calls us to live for a higher purpose to display His power and love to the world. This is why He originally chose the children of Israel so that all people on Earth might be directed to God, but they rebelled and lived life how they wanted to, just as we do today.

We return to Hammer Productions with Frankenstein and the Monster From Hell, filmed at Elstree Studios in 1972. It marked the final chapter in the Hammer Frankenstein saga and director Terence Fisher's last film. The Film Features: Peter Cushing in his sixth and final portrayal of Baron Victor Frankenstein, a part he originated in 1957's The Curse of Frankenstein. Despite being 59 and apparently in poor health when he made this film, Cushing still insisted on performing a stunt requiring him to leap from a tabletop onto the hulking creature's back, spinning wildly in circles to subdue the monster gone amok with a sedative. Shane Briant as Dr. Simon Helder, best known for his four Hammer appearances, including this film and Demons of the Mind, Straight on Till Morning, and Captain Kronos - Vampire Hunter (coming soon from General Witchfinders). He reprised the role of Simon Helder years later in the film Sherlock Holmes vs. Frankenstein. Madeline Smith as Sarah "Angel" Klauss. Also seen in Hammer's The Vampire Lovers, Taste the Blood of Dracula, Tam-Lin, and Theatre of Blood, she went on to become the first Bond girl of the Roger Moore era, Miss Caruso, in the post-opening titles sequence of Live and Let Die (infamous for the scene where Bond unzips her dress with a magnetic wristwatch). After taking a break from acting to raise her daughter, she is still working now at the age of 74, recently appearing in Mark Gatiss's The Amazing Mr. Blunden. And of course, the main event... the feature creature... we have Dave ("Dave Prowse IS Darth Vader") Prowse as the Creature / Herr Schneider. Actor, bodybuilder, and strongman Dave Prowse carved a unique path in film history. He's best known for portraying Darth Vader (voiced by American actor James Earl Jones) in the original Star Wars trilogy. However, his career stretched far beyond that iconic role. He was a familiar face in the UK as the Green Cross Man, promoting road safety for children. However, in a recurring snub to the beautiful West Country accent, the first two adverts in the series had Prowse's voice dubbed by another actor. Thankfully, he appeared using his own voice in the third advert. Dave won the British heavyweight weightlifting championship for three consecutive years (1962-1964). Leading him to compete for England in the 1962 Commonwealth Games. During his bodybuilding training, he befriended future action stars Arnold Schwarzenegger and Lou Ferrigno. His role as the manservant in Stanley Kubrick's 1971 film, "A Clockwork Orange," caught the eye of Star Wars director George Lucas, which led him to the defining role of Darth Vader. Throughout his film and TV career, Prowse was often typecast with parts such as the circus strongman in Vampire Circus, a Minotaur in (Doctor Who Klaxon)'The Time Monster,' and an android named Coppin in The Tomorrow People.  He supposedly came close to iconic roles, claiming to have nearly landed the part of Jaws in James Bond and being considered for Conan the Barbarian before those parts went to other actors. We are told that Prowse lobbied for the role of Superman in Richard Donner's 1978 film. In a television interview, he recounted his response to being told "we've found our Superman" with a simple "Thank you very much," only to then learn Christopher Reeve had been chosen and Prowse would be his trainer. Finally, it's worth noting that David Prowse made his second appearance as a Frankenstein laboratory creation in this film, his first being in The Horror of Frankenstein (uncredited cameo in 1967's Casino Royale aside). He holds the distinction of being the only actor to play a Hammer Frankenstein's monster more than once. Get bonus content on PatreonSupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/general-witchfinders.
